Winter Break

GVM GVM

LIFE

Survival BY RANDY MOORE

Here we go. We’re now in the final stretch of the 2014 fall semester. Are all you little freshmen out there getting excited about your first extended break from school? Yeah, I bet you are.

Well, before you start your packing for the winter break and dreaming of sugar plums or whatever, I’m here to tell you that a college student’s first Christmas break will likely not be the homemade heaven that you are imagining. In all likelihood, it will probably suck – aside from all the Christmas loot, of course. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “I’m sorry Mr. Scrooge, but I have to disagree. I went home for Thanksgiving and didn’t have any friction at all. It was amazing.” And to you, I say: “Shut up, listen and learn.” Yeah, maybe you went home for Thanksgiving and it WAS probably amazing. Do you want to know why? It’s because the three or four days that you spent with your family was not long enough for them to get sick of the newfound independence you have developed after a semester of fending for yourself at school. But this is Christmas break. We’re talking about FOUR WEEKS for you and your family to annoy the crap

out of one another while you count down the minutes until you get to return to ECU and all the friends you’ve made here during your first semester. But don’t worry kiddies – it’s not all bad news. I’m here to give you a rough timeline of your break and what you have to look forward to between the fall and spring semesters.

Week One – “All Quiet On The Western Front”

The first week of the break will generally progress pretty smoothly. You are happy to be home, have a home-cooked meal, relax from all the responsibility that has probably overwhelmed you for the past few weeks, and maybe even catch up with some of your “friends from back home.” As for your family, your parents will be jumping with joy to have their “baby” back, and your siblings (if you have any) might even be happy to

see you because it means that your parents’ scrutiny will not be focused entirely on them while you’re at home. You may even be happy to get back to work so you can make some extra money to purchase Christmas presents.

Week Two – “’Tis The Season”

Christmas usually occurs at the end of week one or at the beginning of week two, which means that any tension that may or may not have already been building will now be replaced with Christmas cheer. The glee of getting free stuff will keep everyone at ease for a little while longer. And so, all is well throughout week two.

LIFE

Week Three – “Something Wicked This Way Comes”

In week three, tensions will begin to rise yet again as your parents begin to get annoyed by your new nocturnal sleep cycle. They will also likely become perturbed by your unwillingness to perform everyday chores that you used to before college, because they don’t understand that you have been performing those routines all semester and don’t think you should have to do them now because you are, after all, on winter BREAK. Also, by this point, you have probably realized that you have now completely outgrown your hometown friends – or vice versa – and have no desire to be around them. In addition to this, you have now worked at your job throughout the better part of your winter holiday and you are now convinced that, if one more person asks you where the “electronics” department is at Best Buy, you may just black out for several hours, during which you will violently quit your job and go on a customer killing spree that would make Jack the Ripper blush.

Week Four – “The Final Countdown”

OK, so you have one week left of your winter break – final stretch. It’s at this point that I recommend you get a nice pair of around-the-ear headphones and start blasting speed metal into your brain during all hours of the day. This will hopefully drown out your parents’ desperate pleas for you to just clean the moldy, used plates off of your bed, which is starting to give you that weird rash. Now is the time in which you will be thankful that you are able to start the process of moving back to school.

Being able to pack will help keep your mind off the recurring dream you’ve been having for the last week in which your family is killed in a mugging, you get a fat inheritance and start fighting crime as a real-life Batman. Despite how you may be feeling about your break thus far, in the final moments before you leave, it is still inevitable that there will be a tearful goodbye. However, as people who have been in this situation know, these are bittersweet tears. You and your parents are a little sad that you have to go back to school, but you are both ready to get away from each other. Remember how I said that it wasn’t all bad news? I lied. - Happy Holidays!!

SOUND

BY CAMMERON MAXWELL

Despite what you may think this band is, you’re wrong. This Band rips through stereotypes like a chainsaw. They are a mosaic of different styles brought together to create an unmistakable sound that permeates your very soul. Jon Mackey’s Guitar is as flawless as it is versatile, and Vocalist Kate Carter’s vocals are hypnotic, and brimming with raw emotion. Bassist Adam Brier, and Drummer Amanda Penley round out the rhythm section with enough thump, and energy, to sink an Aircraft Carrier. Covers like Imagine Dragons “Radioactive” and Evanescence’s “Go-

ing Under” highlight Carter’s hauntingly beautiful voice, and rival the original versions. Flyleaf’s “All Around Me” is a Band favorite that showcases the full range of talent onboard. From Nine Inch Nails to Paramore, this Band’s got it covered. Amanda Penley told us “When we do a Cover, we do it our way, we own it”. Veterans of Greenville hot spots like Peasant’s, and Christy’s, the Band is currently working on new material in the Studio. In the meantime you can check them out on YouTube, and on their Facebook page.

LIFE

for You.

BY BRIAN GOINGS

Last month I was one of many people who got a chance to hear and see Orange is The New Black actress, Lavern Cox. The title of her speech was “’Ain’t I a Woman’ My Journey to Womanhood.” I didn’t know what to expect because I knew she was one of the newer faces for Transgendered Women. She is also a rising star in the acting world and as a fellow thespian; I know how hard it is trying to get a role in anything. However, I did know that whatever she would talk about, she would bring lots of wisdom.

Ms. Cox not only showed how eloquent and beautiful she is, she shared how educated in historical matters she is as well. She spoke on the history of her home state of Alabama. Ms. Cox also spoke on not only being a woman, but also a black woman in America. She talked about Harriett Tubman and how she had to prove her womaness and how as a transgendered woman there is the notion

GVM | 13

that because she is transgendered that she is not a woman. But she sparks the question what exactly defines what a woman is; even bringing up author Simone de Beauvoir. She spoke on true feminism and the things that women of all kinds faced and face every day. Personally I felt she did not linger on being transgendered. Yes she did speak on issues that transgendered people face even giving personal stories of being assaulted. She did not speak too much on issues that the GLBTQ….community face. However, the meat of what she spoke about was acceptance. Ms. Cox talked about how people should accept each other no matter who they are and how they identify themselves. This should not be too much of a shocker but nine times out of ten, people are ridiculed or assaulted because they are “different.” But Ms. Cox suggests that we create safe

spaces for everyone so that they can be themselves without having to hide their true selves. It is when people can be themselves that they can be truly free. Ever tried to please someone by being something you are not? Try living that daily and if you have, you know that living like that can be very stressful and time consuming. For this next year let’s start creating safe spaces for each other. Let’s be a catalyst for each other’s freedom. Greenville’s mission statement states “The city of Greenville’s mission is to provide all citizens with highquality services in an open, inclusive, professional manner, ensuring a community of excellence now and in the future” (Greenvillenc.gov). In order to be an Inclusive Community now and in the future, we need to break the barriers that separate us.

Apple Crisp Stuffed Apples.

GVM GVM

TASTE

BY TAYLOR WHITE

Chilly weather has arrived but no need to fret, we’ve got just the right recipe to warm you up! I’m talking about the delicious and always satisfying Apple Crisp Stuffed apples. That’s right I said it, stuffed apples. This recipe is sure to delight at any get together or a perfect snack for snuggling up in front of the fireplace! We hope you enjoy!

Ingredients - 8 apples (I used Fuji apples) - 4 tablespoons butter - cup brown sugar - ½ teaspoon cinnamon - Crumble topping - ½ cup flour - ¼ cup oats - cup brown sugar - ¼ cup sugar - ¼ teaspoon salt - ½ teaspoon cinnamon - 4 tablespoons butter, chilled and cut into cubes

Instructions Preheat oven to 400 degrees. First, prepare the crumble topping. In a medium bowl whisk together flour, oats, brown sugar, sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Cut in the butter with a pastry knife or two forks or with your hands until mixture is crumbly. Set aside. Peel and chop 4 of the apples. Add chopped apples, butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon to a medium sauce pan and sauté over medium heat for 8-10 minutes or until apples are tender. Remove from heat. Chop the tops off of the remaining 4 apples and use a spoon to scoop out the flesh. Discard the flesh. You don’t need to get every little bit out, just enough to make a “bowl” for the filling. Fill scooped-out apples with apple filling from the sauce pan. Top with a generous amount of crumble topping. Place stuffed apples on a baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes until crumble topping is crispy. Serve warm and top with ice cream and caramel sauce if desired. Enjoy!

‘TAUK’ GVM

SOUND

BY BAREFOOT WADE

I knew Thursday night was going to be a fun night, though apparently I underestimated how awesome it would be. I was happily informed that a band named “Tauk” was coming to play Peasant’s Pub. I was aware of them only by reputation.

They’ve been playing to large festival audiences all summer long including Lockn and Bear Creek Music festival. Generally speaking, this band usually plays to an audience of several thousand so I jumped at the opportunity to see them in a small club setting. Afterall, Tauk is phasing out of the club scene and moving on up to permanent amphitheather status making this a rare opportunity. I was impressed not only by there musicianship but by the way they interact

musically with one another. Their music was full of solid grooves, hypnotic melodies and it made all 77 people in attendence dance for a solid 3 hours in which the band (nor the audience) did not break. Every one in Peasant’s Pub was feeling the full euphoric intensity of the night and that just perpectuated itself and kept everything groovin. No good night on the town is complete with out a proper after party so that was our next logical step. It didn’t take long to round up a crowd and an afterparty in which we raged on till 4:30 in the morning. Come about 5am I am finding myself home and trying to write this article when all I can think about is how much I really want pancakes.
