LIFE
WHAT MEN THINK THEY KNOW, BUT DON’T!! BY RANDY MOORE
Women are mysterious. We men will more than likely never completely figure them out, and that is okay. Some things are better left alone -- the unknown is sexier. Here are some common misconceptions and realities to help shed some light on their vague quirks and patterns.
Women like bad boys. Are you a “nice” guy? How many times have you been passed over for someone who treats women like garbage? Never fear. When women are ready to settle down, chances are they’ll pick a nice guy who can provide stability and a pleasant environment. The bad boys have a shelf life. Don’t you feel better already?
Women are easily won over with gifts. It is true that women like and relish most gifts that men give them. Typically, women
love roses, chocolates, and the large popcorn at the movies. But come on, guys. She may give you every indication that you have won her over by your charm, wit, and gifts. Rest assured, no amount of presents will offset bad manners, a wandering eye, or mismatches in chemistry. Also, not all women are materialistic.
Women appreciat your persistence. It’s true that women like a man who knows what he wants and has the confidence to go after it. Often this carries over into the Asking Her Out category. Know when to stop asking her out. If you ask her out three times and she says no, move on. If you are convinced she’s your dream date, she’s not or else she would not have turned you down so many times.
Breaking up is hard to do. When the time comes to break off the relationship,
be honest. Men often choose to lie their way out of a relationship (yes, out of guilt) or worst of all, they choose an escape route of avoidance. Women need closure. Be as honest as possible while taking her feelings into consideration. Withholding information is better than outright lying. Chances are that if you live in the same town, she’ll catch on to your lies. This can cause nasty confrontations. Never choose a public place to break up with a woman. This is just a bad idea. They need time to gather themselves and they need privacy in case their emotions are unleashed. If you are worried about her becoming irrational -- and it’s possible that she may become totally unreasonable -- at least you can feel comfortable knowing that you’re in a private area and you have come clean by telling her the truth.

LIFE
THE LIGHT SWITCH RELATIONSHIP BY RANDY MOORE
Does this relationship sound familiar? You’re together, but it’s rocky. You split, but it’s never quite over. You stay friends, but wind up back together. You try to work it out, but before you know it, the cycle starts all over again. It sounds bad, but not all on-again/off-again relationships are unhealthy. According to researchers who study them, sometimes they can even strengthen a relationship. Here’s some advice that works whether you’re currently “on” or “off.” Ground Rules Can Be Good Many couples who split up try to stay friends but don’t always know how to define their new relationship. If you’re splitting up - but leaving the door open to getting back together -- try to figure out together how much you’ll continue to see each other, whether you’ll be seeing other people, what will and won’t change about your relationship. Don’t Make It a Habit Researchers report that the more breakups and renewals within a union, the less satisfaction, more conflict and more uncertainty
whereUparty | 11
those couples report. They also - predictably - get less support from friends and family. The more times you’re “off,” the less likely you’ll stay “on.” Make It Work For You But the on/off couples who are happy have a secret: they used the breakup and reconciliation to work on themselves or the relationship’s problems. Consider new rules or ways of doing things. Discuss the issues that have led to conflicts in the past and how you can resolve them. You can’t just sit around hoping things will be better next time around. End It for Good If you’ve tried to make it work, but it never seems to improve, getting on a positive, stable “on” may be impossible. When you’re ready to stay “off” for good, you’ll need to go cold turkey. End things firmly, without implying the possibility of working things out later. Try to stop (or at least really limit) contact and make an effort to move on. The researchers say renewals are less likely when partners start dating other people.

Miss December 2017 Say Hello to Janie Bocanegra! Janie is Miss December in our 2017 Emeralds Of The City Calendar. Janie was born in Chesapeake, Virginia. She is currently a Senior at East Carolina University and will be Graduating this Spring with a Bachelors of Arts in Theatre and a Minor in History and hopes to become a High School Theatre teacher after graduation. Janie loves learning new skills and spending her free time traveling, having adventures and making memories with her friends and family.
Measurements: 32 - 24 - 36
MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE AS AN EMERALD:
This was my second year as an Emerald and I think that my most memorable experience was the 2016 calendar photoshoot. We got to go on an Amazing cruise to the Bahamas and shoot on the beaches there. The morning we arrived in the Bahamas we shot on the beach and almost died from the heat, after going back to the boat to cool off, eat lunch and get freshened up to shoot more that afternoon a storm rolled in, it was raining too hard to finish the photoshoot! but lucky for us our amazing boss found a solution and got permission to finish the photoshoot on the ship, we got to explore the entire ship and take beautiful photographs in places unconventional to a Bikini Calendar, my personal favorite was the Casino!
BEST QUALITY ABOUT MYSELF:
Being a good friend. I only consider a few people as friends to me but for those few I would do anything for, if they need something I will drop whatever I’m doing to be there for them. I’m the friend that you can’t call to bail you out of Jail because I’m sitting next to you especially for Jenna or Larissa. ❤
DREAM JOB:
My dream job is to be a College Professor, I’d like to teach Theatre History, Dramaturgy and Stage Combat.
WHERE YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS:
FAVORITE PLACE TO VISIT?
In 5 years, I will be 27 years old, hopefully I will have a Masters degree in Theatre Pedagogy, pursuing Stage Combat Teacher Certification and working as a High School Theatre Teacher in Eastern North Carolina.
My favorite place to visit... I want to say New Orleans, but I’ve only been there once. Back when I was in High School I went to New Orleans with the Marching Band Color Guard. So, even though I had a lot of fun, I’d love to go again now that I’m older. Mardi Gras trip anyone?
WHICH CELEBRITY WOULD YOU INVITE TO DINNER AND WHY?
ONE WORD TO DESCRIBE ME:
If I could invite any celebrity to dinner I would Invite Sam Heughan because he’s hot, single and I’ve been recently obsessed with a show that he is in called Outlander, hopefully soon I’ll have time to read the book series it’s based on. Oh, and I could listen to that accent all evening.
PERFECT DAY WOULD BE?
A perfect day would be spending quality time with my favorite people, maybe relaxing in a park or on the beach with a few drinks and lots of sun!

INTERESTING FACT ABOUT MYSELF:
I’m the only blonde haired, green eyed person in my family, other than my daughter who looks like a copy of me except with blue eyes, my two sisters both take after my dad’s Hispanic side of the family with dark hair and brown eyes. I look completely out of place in our family photos and no, I’m not adopted.

TAYLOR SWIFT SCORES SECOND WEEK AT US NO.1 WITH ‘REPUTATION’
Taylor Swift has held onto her position at the top of the US album charts after reputation added another 256,000 album sales in its second week on the Billboard 200. Swift’s sixth album reputation went platinum in its opening week, selling 1.2 million copies and becoming 2017’s best-selling album. After being held off streaming services such as Spotify and Tidal, it went onto sell a further 232,000 traditional copies to hold onto the top spot. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the US based on a combination of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums, and streaming equivalent albums. Swift is the first female artist since Adele to spend two consecutive weeks at No.1, according to Billboard. It is also the first album to spend multiple weeks at No.1 in four months, since Jay Z Source: www.independent.co.uk

BTS’ ‘FIRE’ WILL FIRE YOU UP WITH ENCOURAGING LINES: SEE THE TRANSLATED LYRICS
South Korean boy band BTS, also known as Bangtan Boys or Beyond The Scene, pose for photographers during a showcase for its new mini album ‘Love Yourself’ at a hotel in Seoul, South Korea on Sept. 18, 2017. Now that BTS is attracting a wider audience of English speakers, Billboard wants to help new fans understand the meaning behind the lyrics. As the lead single from The Most Beautiful Moment In Life: Young Forever album, “Fire” evoked the notched-up intensity of earlier singles like “Dope” and “No More Dream.” The explosive electro-pop banger is responsible for some of BTS’s most painstaking choreography. The anthemic chorus built around the repetition of the word “fire” is easy enough to grasp. But the pumped-up track is also full of uplifting lines, co-written by RM and Suga, encouraging the “scared” and “miserable” to lift up their fists and “go crazy.” Source: www.billboard.com

INSTRUCTIONS
APPLE CRISP STUFFED APPLES. Ingredients
- 8 apples (I used Fuji apples) - 4 tablespoons butter - cup brown sugar - ½ teaspoon cinnamon - Crumble topping - ½ cup flour - ¼ cup oats - cup brown sugar - ¼ cup sugar - ¼ teaspoon salt - ½ teaspoon cinnamon - 4 tablespoons butter, chilled and cut into cubes
Instructions
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. First, prepare the crumble topping. In a medium bowl whisk together flour, oats, brown sugar, sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Cut in the butter with a pastry knife or two forks or with your hands until mixture is crumbly. Set aside. whereUparty | 23
Peel and chop 4 of the apples. Add chopped apples, butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon to a medium sauce pan and sauté over medium heat for 8-10 minutes or until apples are tender. Remove from heat. Chop the tops off of the remaining 4 apples and use a spoon to scoop out the flesh. Discard the flesh. You don’t need to get every little bit out, just enough to make a “bowl” for the filling. Fill scooped-out apples with apple filling from the sauce pan. Top with a generous amount of crumble topping. Place stuffed apples on a baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes until crumble topping is crispy. Serve warm and top with ice cream and caramel sauce if desired. Enjoy!

10 HOLIDAY PARTY GAME IDEAS Whether you are having a Christmas party with family and friends or an office party with co-workers, here’s a list of games that will add some fun to your celebration. 1. Fill the Christmas stocking. Divide into teams and have the participants race to fill their team’s hanging stocking with a spoonful of wrapped candy. 2. Christmas gift wrap relay. Set up assembly lines of gifts, boxes, scissors, wrapping paper, ribbon, and tape for each team. Either have each player wrap one gift or make an assembly line of workers. Then race to wrap! 3. Word Find. Using Christmas words—Christmas, Poinsettia, Candy cane, etc.—have each person make as many smaller words from it as possible before the timer runs out. 4. Christmas Carol Charades. Get dramatic! You can’t beat this crowd pleaser, as it is sure to bring the laughs. 5. Photo booth. Provide silly props and backdrops for guests to use
to get silly in front of a photographer (keep in mind it doesn’t have to be a professional). 6. Two truths and a lie. This is a great ice breaker! Each person tells two stories about themselves, two of which are true and one that is not. A great Christmas twist is to name their three worst Christmas gifts; two would be true and one would be false. 7. Snowman building contest. Judge on speed or originality. 8. Snowman wrapping contest. Wrap a person as a snowman in toilet paper and decorate. First or best one wins. 9. Snowball throwing contest. Make a large bulls-eye in the snow with food coloring from spray bottles. Indicate points for each circle of the target, like in darts or shuffleboard. Everyone makes the same amount of snowballs and throws for points. 10. Decorate a person as a Christmas tree. Using green crepe paper, ornaments, tinsel—whatever you can find—decorate your “tree”. First or best one wins.$
