Some accounts, particularly businesses on Twitter, have enabled a setting to receive Direct Messages from anyone. You can send a Direct Message to these users even if they don’t follow you, however, as a default, you can only Direct Message those who follow you. You will not see a reply box if you are not able to send a Direct Message to the other participant. This might happen if the other participant has unfollowed you, blocked you or has flagged the conversation with you.

In many cases, you can omit punctuation that is not integral to the reader’s understanding of the tweet. For example: In real life you might say to someone. “Thanks so much for sending this article Mary Swanson, I found it interesting that many women are prevented from gaining board seats because they don’t leverage the power of their networks as effectively as their male contemporaries” As a public tweet, this might become: Failing to leverage networks leads to huge gender gap in #women #board seats HT@MarySW As a Direct Message you might say Thanks so much for sending the Women & Boards article @MarySW, Would love to grab lunch and talk more about it.
