The acceptable amount of space varies wildly across cultures.

While in some countries it is considered commonplace and polite to stand close to one’s interlocutor, the same practice can be seen as intrusive by others.

In some countries like the US, a silence is generally regarded as uncomfortable. Alternatively, other countries like Germany usually have a less negative view of silence, tending to regard it as a normal and even productive moment of reflection.

In some places, a conservative business dress code is preferred, while in other countries –like in certain Scandinavian countries-, business attire is more casual.

So the next time you’re looking to strike a deal, keep these pointers in mind - your business will thank you.

BEHIND THE SCENES IN MANCHESTER Manchester is one of Britain’s most vibrant destinations. Packed with cultural heritage and innovative student population; the city blends tradition with a lively, modern way of life. To find out what makes the city so special, we spoke to Hannah Teece, School Director of EF Manchester and expert on all things the northern city has to offer.

Manchester is famous for being a cultural hub that’s produced the likes of Oasis and The Smiths. Where are the best spots to connect with the city’s artistic past and present?

Manchester has a diverse cultural scene with amazing gig venues, galleries, libraries and museums. There are lots of different areas to explore and so many venues to mention! The Northern Quarter is famous for its great bars, boutique shops and street art. For live music head to Night and Day Cafe, Matt and Phreds Jazz Club or Band on the Wall where many famous bands and musicians have played over the years.

The Northern Quarter is also home to Piccadilly Records – a vinyl store that is a Mancunian institution. The recently opened HOME, an art-house cinema, theatre and exhibition space, is also an incredible venue and cultural hub for the city as is the Bridgewater Hall and the Lowry

at Salford Quays.

And of course, we can’t talk about Manchester without mentioning football...

City or United, blue or red: what do students think of the city’s sporting pedigree?

Manchester is definitely a city that is passionate about football. We run weekly tours of the United and City stadiums and visits to the National Football Museum, which is in the city centre. Plus, we also offer tickets to Premiership and Champions League matches!

It’s not just about football though – the city is also home to Old Trafford international cricket ground and the Manchester Aquatics Centre.

We’ve previously hosted the Commonwealth Games and most recently the Rugby World Cup. The Peak District National Park is also on our doorstep – it is the perfect location for any students who enjoy walking, cycling, rock climbing, kayaking

and other outdoor pursuits.

One last thing, can you tell us something people don’t usually know about you?

I spent my third year of university on an Erasmus exchange program so know first hand what it’s like to study a language as an international student. I spent half of the year in Berlin and the second half in Perpignan and had an absolutely amazing, lifechanging experience!

THE CASE FOR LEARNING A NEW LANGUAGE Learning a new language carries loads of benefits, from boosting CVs to delaying Alzheimer’s. Here we have a look at the top three advantages.

From a professional standpoint, learning a new tongue is life-changing. It increases job prospects in a snap: whereas you used to be able to work in just one country, now a whole new continent (or two!) opened up.

Naturally, speaking at least two languages will jump-start your career at home, too.

Being a global citizen who is able to communicate with people from all over the world is crucial to our globalized world.

What’s more, learning a new language has cognitive benefits, too. It has been found to improve memory and concentration, and lower the risks of Alzheimer’s.

And that’s not all! Speaking more than one language has other intangible perks, too. A new language helps you to understand other people and see the world through their eyes.

and adapting to your surroundings enhances tolerance and openness, and promotes diversity.

THE BEST ENGLISH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD Did you know that Swedes are the best non-native English speakers in the world, while Argentines are number one in Latin America?

A new report from EF sheds light on English proficiency levels across the globe.

The fifth edition of the EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI), published on November 3rd 2015, ranks 70 countries and territories based on data from more than 910,000 adults.

The study not only evaluates English levels across countries, but also across regions, gender, and age groups.

Not surprisingly, Sweden grabbed the first spot in the ranking, followed by the Netherlands and Denmark.

What’s startling, though, is that the gap between the highest ranking country and the last one widened this past year.

More importantly, the report shows that there are strong correlations between English ability and income, Internet connectivity and scientific research. Concretely, this means that the higher a country’s English level is, the more money its people make, the more connected it becomes and the more it innovates.

What’s more, it was found that women have stronger English skills than men – worldwide.

While the gender gap is minimal in Northern Europe, it is widest in the MENA region and Eastern Europe.
