“Studying with EF gave me the opportunity to live in a completely different country, improve my English and, most importantly, get accepted to my dream university, Cornell. The development of my English, alongside being accepted to an Ivy League college, has been my most important achievement. As well as the academic benefits, I really enjoyed being part of EF Boston’s large and friendly community of staff and students from all over the world. We shared so many special moments: We became like a big family. I'm sure these strong bonds with EF students from different cultures will help me make positive social changes as I pursue a career in public policy." Diana Malik from Kazakhstan EF University Foundation Program at EF Boston Enrolled at Cornell University

"My time at EF Oxford equipped me with the required language skills for admission to one of the UK’s leading universities, the University of Exeter, where I now study medical sciences. The program covered essential university topics that I had not learned during my time at secondary school: It taught me how to reference correctly as well as how to write papers such as essays and personal statements for university, which is crucial to the application process. The staff and students at EF were so friendly and always willing to help me with my studies and excursions around this beautiful city. Oxford has a fantastic academic reputation and is a great place to get to know British culture. I was able to try new food, visit historic places and go shopping with new friends from all over the world." School system of the USA A degree from an American university will give you a lifetime of rewards. We’ll help you select the best university, gearing you towards success in today’s global marketplace.

The USA’s Top Universities*

Why study in the USA? US universities are a regular fixture in global university rankings. In fact, 26 of the world’s top 50 universities are located in the country. With EF, you’ll have the opportunity to apply to these institutions while placement is guaranteed at any of our esteemed partner universities. Education in the USA Schooling is mandatory for all children aged six to 16. Elementary school typically runs from Grade 1 to Grade 6 (ages 6 to 12) and Grades 7 to 8 (ages 13-14) are spent at a junior high or middle school. Grades 9-12 (ages 15 to 18) are attended at a high school. Community colleges Community colleges provide a two-year associate’s degree program, often used as a springboard to a four-year bachelor’s degree at university. Community colleges have fewer admissions requirements than four-year institutions. Liberal arts colleges A liberal arts college is an institution that places emphasis primarily on undergraduate study in the liberal arts and sciences. Some also offer grad programs primarily in business administration, law, nursing and medicine. Liberal arts colleges can be private or public. Public universities Public universities, commonly referred to as state universities, are founded and operated by state government entities, receiving most of their funding from the state and/or federal government. Generally, these universities have statewide admission requirements and in general cost less than private universities. Private universities Private universities receive no governmental financial support. They are funded through faculty research grants, tuition fees and alumni donations. The major reasons why students choose a private university are often due to its small class size, technological resources and research facilities.

Germany

School system of Germany The German school system prepares students for entrance to higher education at the country’s top universities.

Why study in Germany? German universities combine centuries of academic heritage with stateof-the-art facilities to ensure students graduate with a prestigious degree. As well as German universities, the language and academic skills gained with EF will allow you to attend university in Austria and Switzerland. Education in Germany From the age of six or seven (depending on the state), children attend an elementary school called Grundschule. They then progress to either a Hauptschule, which prepares students for a vocational education, or a Realschule, which has a broader range of emphases for intermediate pupils. From grades 11 or 12 to 13, students attend Gymnasium. There, students study up to 10 subjects before taking the Abitur, which is the academic qualification required to enter German universities.

EF Munich

University Undergraduate students in Germany typically pursue a bachelor’s degree which specializes in one subject for three years. Entrance requirements for international students include a German proficiency test (TestDaF) and – if the student’s high school diploma is not considered equivalent to the Abitur – an additional year of secondary school in Germany, known as Studienkolleg, which is the equivalent to grade 13 at Gymnasium. Universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen) focus on a practical scientific approach. The range of subjects is generally not as extensive and is focused on certain subject areas, such as technology, industry, social affairs or media. The integrated practical phases are comprised of internships spanning several weeks, extended project phases or entire practical semesters. Master’s, MBA or PhD degrees: Ages 21+ A master’s or MBA degree typically lasts one year and requires both exams and a thesis to graduate. Some specialized careers require the completion of a doctoral program or PhD, which includes four to five years of advanced study and research. For most of these programs, international students are required to have a recognized undergraduate degree and a German level of at least C1. MBA programs normally require at least two years of work experience.

School breaks and public holidays In the event of a public holiday, EF International Language Centers will be closed and lessons on those dates will not be made up at a later date. School breaks vary from one International Language Center to another. For programs beginning in January or April there will normally be two breaks of one to two weeks. In general, for programs beginning in June, there will be a one-week fall break and a three-week Christmas vacation. For programs starting in September, there will normally be a three-week Christmas vacation and a one-week spring break. The student’s accommodation is available during vacation periods. Program levels Before the start of the course students must take a level placement test in EF’s My EF iLab to assess their language proficiency. The results will be used to place students in the correct program level. When an EF International Language Center has a General language level of five students or fewer, EF reserves the right to combine students of different levels in the same classes. Academic Materials All EF University Preparation Abroad students are required to purchase the needed program materials. This fee will be included in your total invoice. Prices may vary by destination and by the length of your program. EF Language Preparation/ACDP Semester / Year All locations $195/145 EF University Foundation Program Semester / Year All locations $400/300 EF Diploma in Business & Management Semester / Year All locations $ 230/345 EF Pre-Master’s & EF Pre-MBA Semester / Year All locations $500/400 For EF University Transition Program or Hult academic resource fees please contact us. Parent/s or legal guardian-/s of students under the age of majority traveling with EF give their consent for the student to use the My EF web service. All students enrolled in an EF General and Intensive English program will have access to online iLab lessons upon enrollment, throughout the program and for 3 to 6 months after their program ends. Students enrolled in non- English program will have access to iLab during their program. Exceptions to this are EF International Language Centers in Tokyo and Beijing, where iLab lessons are replaced by teacher-led lessons. Online One-to-One Package EF’s online One-to-One package is available in combination with any Academic Year Intensive English or Academic Year General English course for an additional supplement fee of $270. The package includes six 40-minute private lessons, with one teacher per student. The lessons are conducted online during the course, or after the student has returned home. Arrival and airport transfers The fee for an optional transfer between the airport of arrival and the destination is listed on the EF International Language Center pages. This covers the cost of administration, communication, greeting services and transportation. The transfer service is offered between 7:00 and 21:00 hours local time on Sundays. If students arrive at any other time, EF can arrange a special transfer at an additional cost. If several students are picked up at the same time certain waiting periods can occur. EF at its own discretion may cancel the transfer service if fewer than three students have booked transfer services to the same destination at the same time. In such cases the student will be informed three days before the start of the course at a minimum and EF will reimburse any moneys paid for such cancelled transfer service. EF cannot be held responsible for delays caused by traffic, road construction or accidents. Rebooking Any student requests to change destination, program type, start date or type of accommodation after initial enrollment will result in a rebooking fee of $100, which is payable immediately. EF retains the right to make changes to destination, program type, start date or type of accommodation up to 21 days before the program start date. Program Dates EF accommodation is available from the Sunday prior to your start date until the Saturday after your program ends. The student needs to arrange travel to arrive/depart on these days, as arriving earlier or later to accommodation may require additional fees. Start Date
