My career in education: Angela Adamu EF teacher Angela Adamu shares her colorful professional background and a pursuit of educational development that has taken her across the globe.

Angela Adamu has worked with EF since 2014.

“Before joining EF in 2014, I worked in five different countries, in various capacities that included: teaching, management, teacher development, educational consultancy, and partnering with financial agencies in Nigeria to provide access to professional development opportunities. I also consulted for, and set up, three large schools operating successfully in the Nigerian capital of Abuja.

My journey at EF has been just as exciting. I’ve taught a variety of courses, led programs, created technologybased interactive activities, and trained Vietnamese teachers. Additionally, I designed experiences to enable students to interact academically and socially with New Yorkers, collaborated on research and development, and, most recently, led the EF Youth Leadership Forum in New York.

journey; I was blown away by the intelligence and passion of the participants. It was extremely encouraging to work with future leaders, especially those who have been awakened at an early age to the knowledge of social justice and the need to address inequalities in the both local and global contexts.”

Working with the Youth Forum was definitely one of the highlights of my EF

Seido Iga and the EF Challenge

EF Challenge winners learn about global issues on their visit to our EF campus in New York.

The EF Challenge gives aspiring young orators the opportunity to engage with global issues, and collaborate with their teachers. Winners are invited on the ultimate education travel trip to our EF campus in New York for the Youth Leadership Forum. We spoke to Seido Iga, an English teacher from Japan whose student Toshiaki was one of 2017's talented winners.

3. In what ways do you think his trip to New York has helped him? He’s more confident, and uses his own initiative. When he returned to Japan, he remade his speech for the EF Challenge in the form of a power-point, which he presented to hundreds of people at our school culture festival. I think his project helped others to engage with global issues in a positive way.

1. Why did you encourage your students to participate in the EF Challenge? Trying something challenging is great motivation for learning. The EF Challenge presents students with a profound question to answer, for example: “What does it mean to be a global citizen?”. Students have to do research, reflect on their personal experiences, and discover new perspectives. This process also enriches their English vocabulary.

4. What differences did he notice between Japan and America? We just had a casual conversation about New York. He met people from many different countries, shared opinions, and formed friendships. He reflected on how people from different cultures can find better ways to live together.

2. Did the EF Challenge help you to connect more with Toshi? We had many creative discussions about how to improve speeches, watched other applicants’ videos, and exchanged emails in English. Yes – in English, not Japanese. Using English all the time gave us a deeper connection with the language.

Register your students for the next EF Challenge before 15th April 2018. This year's topic is: 'What does sustainable development mean to you?'.
