Benefits 07
Holiday Policy
Healthcare
Full-time and part-time teachers, who have been working for EF for 90 calendar days or longer, will be paid for their scheduled teaching blocks for the following seven holidays: New Year’s Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Friday following Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
A teacher that the school designates as full-time will be eligible for the EF’s generous healthcare benefits. These benefits are provided as a sign of EF’s commitment to our dedicated full-time teachers.
Holiday pay is based on a teacher’s scheduled blocks had the school been in session that day. Holiday pay applies to the teaching time only.
Full-time designated teachers accrue up to 40 hours of paid vacation per calendar year. All requests need to be approved one month prior by the Academic Director. Only full-day (8 hours) vacation requests are permitted. There are blackout dates in the summer and for Language Year intakes in September, January and April.
Independence Day is not a paid holiday due to the peak summer enrollment. If designated to work on Independence Day, hourly teachers will be paid a one-time July 4th bonus in addition to their regular pay.
Sick Leave Non-salaried teachers accrue 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 40 hours in a calendar year. Employees may carry over up to 40 hours of unused sick time to the next calendar year, but cannot use more than 40 hours in a calendar year. Unused accrued sick time will not be paid upon termination.
Paid Vacation
401K All employees are eligible to contribute to a 401k with matching company contributions after meeting the 401k plan’s service requirements. Part-time and temporary teachers are eligible to participate once they have worked for 1000 hours in a calendar year, as measured from their start date. Fulltime hourly and salaried teachers may participate after three months of service.
EF follows all state mandated sick time policies, and will provide either the EF standard policy or per state law, if more generous.

Classroom Preparation
Observations and Evaluations
EF teachers will be provided with paid time for preparation and grading (prep time) for each block taught at a rate of 15 minutes per teaching block. (Example: an EF teacher who teaches 20 blocks per week will be paid an additional 5 hours for preparation and grading). Prep time is paid at an administrative rate of pay and is defined as all work that is done to complement the class taught. This includes, but is not limited to, lesson planning, lesson prep, attendance, and grading.
EF strives to provide two classroom observations each year by the Academic Director or Academic Manager, focused on classroom skills and performance.
Additional administrative time for preparation and grading may on occasion be paid upon pre-approval by the Academic Director. The EF EFEKTA System was specifically designed and developed to enable a teacher to provide quality lessons with this allotted amount of time for preparation and grading.
Feedback from these observations is shared with the teacher and included in the teacher’s file. A yearly EF performance evaluation based on EF core values is provided by the Academic Director. This is a process for all EF employees, giving them an opportunity to reflect on their work and goals and provide feedback to their manager on his or her leadership. EF promotes a teaching culture of sharing and support. Our teachers are expected to welcome classroom observations, including peer observations, and provide lesson plans and guidance prior to formal observations.
Teachers are expected to enter attendance daily, grades and participation scores, and submit schemes of work weekly.

Teaching quality EF’s aim is to attract and retain the highest quality teachers recognized through cumulative student evaluation scores and classroom observation. EF’s aim is to have all teachers with a cumulative student evaluation score of 4.5 or higher (on a 5.0 scale). EF believes that this threshold score is correlated to the level of challenge, interest, and learning by students in the class. Student evaluation scores will be reviewed regularly by the Academic Director. Teachers may request and receive in a reasonable time period their individual evaluation scores. All teachers will be provided with individual quarterly reports of his or her cumulative scores.
A performance improvement plan may be developed by the Academic Director for those teachers with continued low evaluation scores after feedback and classroom support has already been given. This plan will include SMART goals allowing the teacher to see specific points of improvement and the timeframe for which these goals should be achieved. S - Specific M - Measurable A - Achievable R - Relevant T - Time-bound
Any teacher with a score that has fallen below 4.0 will be provided with observation, assistance, and coaching by the EF academic staff.

Scheduling
Experience and Qualifications
Flexibility is a value we seek from all EF staff and teachers. Because our class offerings are determined by student need and choice, EF teachers are expected to teach any assigned classes and levels in any classroom in the school.
EF acknowledges that teachers come with a variety of experiences and qualifications and strives to compensate accordingly.
During times of yearly low enrollment, requiring fewer teaching blocks, salaried and full-time designated teachers are given priority for class assignment.
19LS_Teacher Book_A5_Master.indd 10
EF maintains four (4) starting teaching rates based on levels of experience and qualifications. Teachers with similar qualifications and experience will start at the same rate. Though not guaranteed, EF strives to provide teachers with a yearly teaching rate increase effective January 1st. Teachers who were hired prior to June 1st of the previous year may be eligible for a rate increase.
