BUSINESS 13
Feature SALARY INDEX

16 LEADERS OF TOMORROW

Public Relations
Graduate Trainee

FEATURE FASHION
Text: Jin Wong Photos: iStockphoto, Internet

BUSINESS 23

Learning leadership at business schools 26 LEADERS OF TOMORROW
“
Certain programmes make a particular effort to help individual students apply lessons learned in the classroom to other aspects of their lives and careers
“
T
he old adage says that leaders are born, not made, but in today’s business world people don’t necessarily agree with that traditional wisdom. In fact, MBA students increasingly see business schools not just as the place to gain practical knowledge, but also where they can develop the range of leadership skills needed to run a major organisation. Most MBA programmes now offer formal courses in leadership. Some are core classes, others are electives which allow students to focus on specific concepts. It is also common to see schools making use of case competitions, group projects and mock business plan pitches to encourage students to work in teams and let them take on informal leadership roles. Certain programmes make a particular effort to help individual students apply lessons learned in the classroom to other aspects of their lives and careers. This can begin with the writing of an autobiographical assessment of their skills, abilities, strengths and weaknesses as part of the admission process. Subsequently, students may be asked to review and revise that self-assessment as they get into the coursework and team-based activities. At that point, they are starting to see and understand more clearly what it takes to influence others in different situations and when facing different challenges – and, therefore, what they need to change in themselves to be a more effective leader. As the course progresses, students can compare and adapt to overcome weaknesses, build on strengths, and learn a style or styles of leadership which work best for them.
A growing number of MBA programmes are now using tests and analysis to develop better leadership skills. These methods offer students an objective view of what they need to work on and usually start with a 360-degree assessment. For that, feedback is sought from peers, instructors, former co-workers, family and friends to build an all-round profile based on how others truly perceive the individual. The aim is to help the MBA student develop an action plan to address specific types of behaviours which otherwise might give the wrong message or impression and, thereby, limit advancement and chances to lead. Overall, leadership skills are essential to build an individual’s identity and reputation in their chosen professional arena. Through exposure in the classroom to research and examples of the right principles, students can learn how to apply the best practices in their workplace and, as a result, build high-performing teams. The initial self-assessment gives the opportunity to examine current skill sets, be more objective, and determine where improvements are necessary. Business schools have the tools and pathways to make MBA students better leaders, but it is up to each individual to take advantage of these resources and to keep learning as their roles and the demands of leadership continue to evolve.

ot many people would say that their childhood dream was to work in a bank, but that is exactly what Aaron Cheung always wanted. Coming from Hong Kong, the decision to go into finance just seemed the natural thing for him to do. After finishing his undergraduate studies at Macquarie University in Sydney, where his family had settled when he was about ten, Cheung first landed a job as an external auditor. Setting high goals for himself, his initial aim was to get the CFA qualification and become a CPA. “I had one degree in accounting and another in finance, so I upgraded to the professional designation for both,” he says. “I take ownership and responsibility seriously. I don’t commit to something that I know I can’t achieve.” 30 LEADERS OF TOMORROW

The art of managing people
Work as a compliance officer proved beneficial, allowing Cheung to gain a thorough understanding of how banks operate. Excelling at more detailed analytical tasks, he soon moved on to become a manager, overseeing a team of compliance analysts and doing investment compliance reports. Subsequently, Cheung continued to move around within his organisation, gaining experience in industry practice and the key elements of management. “At work, I’m more demanding and can be very decisive, but outside, I’m quite easy-going and more open to the wider group dynamic,” he says. When it comes to managing people, he’s thoughtful too. “Simple praise such as ‘good job’ can mean a lot to colleagues. It builds trust in relationships.”
It is also important to know how to react to those around and to be supportive. Cheung first started managing subordinates six years after graduation and is increasingly comfortable with the role. “I am not fond of an extremely hierarchical work culture, so I treat everyone equally, being more directive when appropriate,” he says. Cheung aims to adjust his management style as necessary, when dealing with different situations and challenges. “Individuals are unique, so there’s no single management style, but I do enjoy the process,” he says. With less experienced staff, his approach is to coach and guide, in order to build confidence. With junior managers, he is more inclined just to delegate because he trusts their competence. Another of Cheung’s jobs is to ensure team members are working towards the same goal. “Non-performing staff are a liability to the team. It is never an easy decision to let go – or continue trying,” he says. “Managing virtual teams is even more difficult. If communication isn’t face-to-face, that can create barriers.”
Choosing an MBA
“
“
I have to adapt to the constantly changing environment. If you can’t do that, people lose faith in you as a leader
When selecting his MBA course, he was looking for a programme with plenty of classroom sessions and chose the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM) at the University of New South Wales. “I wanted to meet people and learn by discussion and sharing,” he says. “Students on the part-time programme in Hong Kong are from a mix of industry backgrounds. They’re more mature with more work experience, so can bring value-added insights.” Cheung knew that the MBA would provide him with skills for managing people and his approach in the workplace has now changed in certain ways. For instance, he learned about handling non-performers and the problems they might have. He also came to understand individual “career anchors” and finding the appropriate way to motivate each person. Insights
from the course also changed the way he supports his staff in terms of their personal ambitions and career direction. “In the past, I set expectations for my staff and advised them what to do if they wanted to progress further. After completing my MBA, I realised that they should manage their own plans, but that I should listen and coach them. This way, they take ownership and responsibility for managing their own careers.” The principle is that, sometimes, less is more.
Making right decisions
As head of implementations for State Street Asia, Cheung finds that decision-making is a vital part of his job, and he advises people not to make judgment calls. “I aim to gather all the relevant stakeholders and discuss the possible options to get a group consensus – I can’t work solo,” he says. “Before making any decision, I usually conduct detailed cost/ benefit and risk analyses. I used to base ideas on past successes and not over-think things. If a solution had worked before, I felt it should be OK again. But you can sometimes look back and see when something wasn’t the best solution, so I look for new approaches and check all the facts because my instincts could be wrong.” At other times, he asks someone to play devil’s advocate to challenge constructively CAREER PATH and stimulate thinking. Cheung knows that Head of Implementations– followers make a leader. Analytics Solutions, Asia State Street Asia “I have to understand the bigger picture, the Senior Manager, Investment strategic direction the Compliance Service company is taking, and State Street Asia lead my team towards Investment Services it. Global goals are Compliance Officer translated into local and Hang Seng Bank divisional goals and I have to make those clear Senior Associate, Assurance PricewaterhouseCoopers, Hong Kong and relevant to my team.” There is another Semi-Senior Accountant, level of consideration Assurance & Advisory too. “I have to adapt to Department Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, Hong Kong the constantly changing environment. Leadership, professionalism – two vital talents A change management expert must carefully plan and execute each move towards a desired outcome. Mastering the role, with its constant challenges and unexpected obstacles, is no easy task, but it is something Louise Ho was able to take in her stride. What helped, no doubt, was a degree in industrial engineering from the University of Toronto, which Ho completed before moving back to Hong Kong and joining the HSBC management programme. The subsequent 12 years, rising through the ranks to oversee projects for the change management team, provided a wealth of experience and convinced Ho that she had made the right choice of career.
From the ground up
“HSBC has a lot of business lines, so I was able to try different jobs within the company,” she says. “There was a good training scheme and room to grow, and we were encouraged to consider our careers from early on.”
32 LEADERS OF TOMORROW
A well organised executive, Ho knows her own mind, and communicates her views clearly, which meant that project management was always likely to be a good match. Working in a department with regional responsibilities enabled Ho to travel around Asia and meet a number of the bank’s most senior executives, presenting proposals, and learning what it took to effect change. “In places like South Korea, they thought I was an odd fit in the team because I’m a woman,” she says. “But I didn’t consider that a factor and just focused on proving myself. They quickly saw I was capable of doing the job.” After about six years, Ho decided that an MBA would be a logical next step. Having worked for just one organisation, she wanted a better understanding of the “outside world” and how other businesses actually worked. She also wanted to develop her creative thinking, so enrolled with Manchester Business School.
“Being in areas like engineering and change management, I have to be very creative,” Ho says. “I wanted to find new approaches and knew that only working at HSBC might limit that.” She also knew the MBA would introduce her to people from many other industries, giving the chance to learn about different corporate cultures and management styles. “In fact, I learned how to tackle strategy, business culture and much else,” she says. “The programme shed new light on things I’d already been through and helped me see why people don’t always agree with my ideas. As an MBA student, you soon realise there is a lot more to learn. For me, a key thing was seeing how to be more efficient.”
Ho started her career at HSBC as a management trainee
When it comes to project and change management, Ho believes that thinking ahead and being organised are the most important factors. “I have to present my ideas well, so I need to be subjective in looking for improvements and must think outside the box,” she says. “The MBA really helped my creativity and gave me a much better understanding of other industries.”
Work, health balance
Now vice president of the private banking divsion at another global financial services firm, Ho has already achieved most of her initial career goals, something she attributes to being a positive person who doesn’t panic easily and who knows how to use her strengths. Yet one of her biggest lessons in life came quite unexpectedly. “I had some health issues with my heart, combined with a lot of pressure at work,” she says. “I had been used to overcoming obstacles, but this was different.
“
There is never reason to regret your decisions. If something doesn’t work, just move on to the next
“
MBA for creativity
“To help myself, I realised I had to stop and look at what to do next,” she says. “I had never really taken a break, so I asked for a sabbatical. I was lucky to take a few months away to relax and recoup and be with my family. I realised my health was really important.” The sabbatical also helped her to see just how little she could actually control. “Before that, I had always initiated moves within the company and to do my MBA — it was my choice,” she says. “Now, I had to think about how to reduce pressure – not take on more. I had to tone things down, be a bit less aggressive in going after what I wanted, and strike a better work-life CAREER PATH balance. Happiness is the Vice President, most important thing. Work Private Banking Division is work, not 100 per cent of A global financial services company who I am.” Senior Lead Business Analyst, In general, Ho says the Securities Services business most important thing is to HSBC believe in yourself. It is also essential not to shy away Senior Business Project Manager, from new things, otherwise Global Banking and Markets you are limiting opportunities HSBC for possible success. “There is never reason Project Manager HSBC to regret your decisions. hough born in Hong Kong, Eimund Loo moved to Australia at a young age and, when it came to choosing a part-time MBA, felt sure that Macquarie Graduate School of Management (MGSM) offered the benefits he was looking for. “I think Australian schools get the balance just right between theory, practice and application; they put students outside their comfort zone,” he says. Having taken a degree in computing in 1999, he felt it was too early back then to move straight on to master’s level qualification. “For 15 years, I had been in formal education and wanted some real-world experience, which wasn’t just playing by the rules,” says Loo, who still prefers applying in practice to simply learning the theory. He therefore accepted a graduate trainee position at Deloitte and, landing on his feet, stayed there for the next 13 years gaining plenty of diverse exposure. “Work took me to four different continents, collecting a wealth of experience and skill sets which have since proved extremely useful,” he says.
The open road to the world
Naturally, those moves also changed the way he approaches life. Learning to adapt easily and calmly to new surroundings and cultures, he discovered what it took to fit in and not feel like a fish out of water. “Those life-changing experiences challenge you personally and emotionally because your immediate support structure is no longer readily available. Learning and adapting to unfamiliar surroundings can be disorienting and make you

question your own abilities and confidence,” he says. At work, a series of secondments brought him into contact with Fortune 500 clients, providing insights into their structures, processes, and their inherent complexities, while also highlighting his own strengths and weaknesses as a young person in business.
Loo describes himself as a detailed, proactive and engaging person who enjoys leading, as well as being part of a team
“

Those who resist change or are slow to accept it tend to miss the boat and spend additional time and resources catching up
At times, Loo moved between cities every few months. “To overcome the immediate challenges, I needed selfconfidence. I focused on improving my core skills and the bigger picture of what I wanted to achieve,” he says. The key was to put changes and challenges into context and then work on them methodically. Family and friends at home also provided essential support. “I felt the importance of having a solid support structure,” says Loo, who was a frequent user of Skype, email and SMS to keep in touch. “It is essential to be flexible and willing to learn new things,” he says. “It may sound like a cliché, but change means uncertainty, especially in business, so the ability to accept and adapt is key to success and progress. Those who resist change or are slow to accept it tend to miss the boat and spend additional time and resources catching up.”
An MBA brings life-long benefits
Au fait with a collegiate environment, he responded to the collaboration and discussion entailed in the MBA as soon as he started it in 2010. “I came to realise that personal experience alone can lead to a very myopic perspective,” he says. “To be truly successful, a wider scope is needed,” The MBA gave Loo outlooks and skills he wouldn’t have come across in his daily work. “It expanded my viewpoint to consider a broader range of ideas and try different approaches in tackling new challenges.”
In particular, it changed his approach to decision-making, showing the importance of thinking around the problem and outside the box. “I base decisions on factors like time, all available information, the objectives and context of the project, the potential consequences, and any elements of gut feeling,” he says. Where possible, Loo prefers to leverage past experiences and their outcomes, but is now better prepared for situations which are basically unfamiliar. Moves made during his career have also given him the chance to consider strategy and how best to CAREER PATH achieve a desired result. escribing himself as 100 per cent local, Adam Wong Chik-wai might appear to be a typical accountant, but he is quick to counter that suggestion. He did earn an accounting degree from the University of Hong Kong and then accept a first job at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), focusing on audit assignments for financial services companies, but he always saw the need to gain a wider perspective. That is why, after completing his main professional qualifications, he decided to take a part-time MBA with Royal Holloway College at HKU Space. “I was thinking about how to continue learning and to advance my career,” says Wong, who stepped away from finance for a while just before his MBA, working in electronic manufacturing services for Surface Mount Technology. “It gave me a chance to be really involved in a business itself, not just taking an independent view of it like I had before.” Wong refers to Maslow’s Hammer - if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail - when explaining his reasons for taking the MBA. He believes that education is the key to better understanding and being able to respond to change.

Lost and found
One of the biggest changes he has had to deal with came just as he started his undergraduate degree. “I’m quite positive and easy-going, but the hardest thing in life is when you feel lost,” he says. “When my father passed away, I realised I had studied hard to prove I could do better than he expected. It affected our relationship and, after he died, I realised there were other important things in life and in our relationship.” That shift in his outlook has continued to this day. “I opened myself up and found many opportunities at university. I saw that the world was bigger than I thought. I had to accept that I couldn’t be the best at everything, but could be good at some things.” 36 LEADERS OF TOMORROW
A graduate of:
HKU SPACE / Royal Holloway College University of London MBA in International Management
That enthusiasm for study carried him through his university and professional exams, then into things like a diploma in environmental and interior design. The focus there was creativity and innovation, in sharp contrast to the logic and facts needed for the MBA. “I think this balance helps in work and in life,” Wong says. “It gives you more angles from which to view things. And I can enjoy the world more. Learning is really important, it gives momentum and inspiration.” Another way to learn more is through travel. Therefore, Wong tries to take several overseas trips a year to see what other countries are all about. Sometimes, he travels alone, taking the chance to clear his mind and really observe his surroundings. “It doesn’t have to be adventurous, but something new - I want to experience more,” he says.
Relying on instincts
“
“
I don’t claim to be successful, but as long as I have a positive attitude, I can experience a better life and make every day count
Now back in the finance industry as finance director, reporting and analysis, for Prudential Assurance, Wong says the most essential skill needed for his role is an analytical mind: “I deal with a lot of numbers and business issues, so how I interpret them affects how I decide to help the company. There are no set boundaries or formulas to follow, so I think it is important to keep learning. Understanding the business world forms the backdrop of those decisions and how to be analytical.” Instincts also play a role. “There might not need to be long discussions and research. The knowledge and experiences you’ve accumulated create the right instincts. Sometimes, thinking too much can mean you include irrelevant information.”
Apart from travelling, Wong likes photography
Like most people, Wong has experienced ups and downs but, for him, a good attitude is the key to everything. “Every day is an experience which makes me who I am,” he says. “I don’t claim to be successful, but as long as I have a positive attitude, I can experience a better life and make every day count.” This belief encourages CAREER PATH him to keep testing his abilities and apparent Director, Finance Prudential Assurance, Hong Kong boundaries. “It is never too late to try something Regional Financial Controller, new.

BUSINESS 41

42 LEADERS OF TOMORROW
Myan

後來想 嘗試實踐自己從學校學來的理論,例如課堂上講的 4p(price,promotion,place,roduct)等。

50 LEADERS OF TOMORROW

Photos: May Tse, Internet
A graduate of:
Hkust BSc in Economics and Finance
58 LEADERS OF TOMORROW
The problem is not the problem. The problem is your attitude about the problem。
Ivy
