PART 1: GAME ON
Why are sports good for us? Playing sports helps you stay in shape, teaches you how to organize your time, boosts friendships, and builds relationships with your peers and adults. Through athletics, you gain skills that can best be acquired on a court, track, or field. Friendship Playing sports enables you to create friendships you otherwise might not have formed. Sports bring people together from different schools, backgrounds, and communities. Many times, the friendships you create on the field, especially on a team, remain intact even when you are not playing sports. Teamwork Being able to work well with others is necessary for anyone who wishes to succeed in life. Whether it is at your job, on a group project at school, or even with family members, there is always a need to be able to work well with other people, even if you are not friends with them.

Health Participating in sports improves your health in many ways. Exercise gives us more energy, and makes us stronger, happier, and healthier overall. To be a good athlete, you must take care of yourself. This gets you thinking about what to eat and how to treat your body to achieve the best performance levels. Competition Teams and individuals go head-to-head in an attempt to outdo one another or even themselves. Done healthily, sports can teach us to be more competitive. Sports teaches us how to translate our competitive nature on the field or court into real life. Whether it be grades, a job, or admission to a college, athletes understand that having a competitive edge can be the deciding factor in getting the most out of life.

PART 1: GAME ON
Leadership Skills Participating in sports helps build leadership skills. Sports teams allow you to surround yourself with competitive people and role models and learn from them both. You can demonstrate your leadership through team captainships and individual actions to improve your team's success. Courage The definition of courage is the ability to face difficulty despite fear. In sports, this may mean going against a bigger, stronger, more athletic opponent. In life, there will be plenty of situations in which the odds are against you. To have that resilience needed, one must have courage.
Resilience is the ability to recover quickly from challenges thrown your way.
Sports can teach players many valuable lessons that extend beyond the game.

Sporting Values Respect and Sportsmanship: These values emphasize treating others with respect, both on and off the field, and showing sportsmanship in victory and defeat.
Good Sportsmanship Winning and losing respectably is a true sign of good sportsmanship. It also means that an athlete has patience and self-control—being humble instead of bragging when winning, and being calm and collected instead of rude and upset when losing. Patience and selfcontrol are needed in life when things do not go the way we intend them to.
Integrity and Fair Play The sports community is very much against cheating. For there to be a good game, there needs to be a fair game. This is why playing by the rules of the game is important.

Teamwork and Cooperation Many sports require teamwork. Soccer, basketball, and hockey all need the players to work together. A team is only as strong as the weakest member, so teams need to support one another and cheer each other on. Remember, there’s no ‘I” in a team.

Resilience and Perseverance These values focus on the ability to bounce back from hardship, learn from failures, and continue striving for improvement. Losing is normal.; no one can win every single game. A true athlete won’t give up when things get hard, in fact, a good athlete will keep pushing until they get better.

Safety and Responsibility In sports, the safety of the players is incredibly important, even if we are striving to get people to push past their limits. Athletes must follow safety guidelines like wearing safety gear. They must also listen to the doctor’s recommendation whenever they get injured.
