INTRODUCTION I am a outgoing and enthusiastic person who likes to excel when given a certain tasks. I have a strong passion for both architecture and fitness. In architecture, I wish to be able to create spaces that sets people thinking and touch their emotions and feelings. I learnt that architecture can be approached in many ways after going through my journey in year 1, but I solely believed that architecture should be approached through the genius loci after my first project which I had a chance to be exposed to hence I aim to develop and explore this further in the future. Thank you for your consideration, EDWIN LAM

ABSTRACT Sustainable living in architecture can be the solution in solving future issues such as social, economic, political and various more. The key towards a sustainable architecture is percieved when an architecture is able to adapt to changes to the different zeitgeist of the period, able to evolve in terms of expansion and reduction to the needs of the people, able to function as an ecosystem, able to achieve nett zero carbon emission and provide extra energy for the environment and community. Through this academic year, I have managed to explore projects that can contribute to sustainbility. The 24 storey residential project has investigated the means of creating an ecosystem for a community through the exploration on how communal spaces interact with one another hence social sustainability. The International BIM Competition has investigated the means of creating a sustainable facade using computational analysis and design methods which explores on productivity and construction efficiency thus economic sustainability The Overseas Social Innovation Project has investigated the means of participatory design with different community hence exploring the success in designing for and with the community therefore social sustainability. The vertical studio elective II on Re-envisiong the Kelong has investigated on pod off grid farming module system which has explored on how a single module can be self sustainable in producing both food and water thus creating opportunity for food and energy sustainability. In response the given design statement and issue, I have always uphold an importance in responding a project towards the genius loci hence in depth site analysis is always important for me in the work but at the same time adapting to the future changes.

PROJECT 2 : FUTURE HOUSING FOR THE SILVER GENERATION THE ECO VILLAGE Project two is a 24 storey dwelling residential apartment unit catered for silver generations in the rochor precint, .Currently in the schematic stage, the design concept is to create a self sustaining community eco village like sustainable living for the silver generation in these architecture while enhancing the biodiversity of the site. Using site response, porous communal and sky terraces are created with intensive programs to engage the elderlies and also to add greenery to the heavy urbanised environment on site. With the overlapping balcony facade, visual connectivity can be easily achieve with nature and the user.
6
PROJECT 2 : THE ECO VILLAGE
DESIGN CONCEPTUALIZATION The design issue is that current housing are not enough in promoting active ageing programs and functions for he silver generations hence their potential might not be touched on . Part of the genius loci is also lost in the site due to the urban redevelopment and in the near future, the biodiversity of nature in the site will be perished too. The design intent is to enhance the genius and biodiversity of the site by integrating an sustainable ecosystem to engage the economy hence rebuilding the lost sense of place and community in the site. The design concept is to redefine future housing as a self sustaining eco village in response to the site context which at the end supports living sustainbility both physically and mentally for the elderlies.
PROJECT 2 : THE ECO VILLAGE
7
MACRO SITE ANALYSIS The site is located in an existing carpark beside sim lim tower filled with lush greenery and an underused broadwalk that serves the neighbourhood. Identity of the site comes from the famous thieve’s market as well as the shophouses which creates an old precint. However, due to the development in the area, nature and historical features are slowly depleting. View such as shophouse, istana, skyline are optimsied to drive the design for visual connectivity with the site while trying to avoid the heavy pollution and traffic of the streets
8
PROJECT 2 : THE ECO VILLAGE
MICRO SITE ANALYSIS Rochor’s climate is generally windy and humid due to the climatic factor which is affected by the site’s canal and buildings. It also well shaded due to the surrounding tall buildings and nature in the site. The site is mainly made up of historical buildings with a varying mix of buildings hence design should respect the height and also feeling produced. There is also a well mix of smells in the site which makes it interesting hence it should be carefully considered.Rochor canal acts as a heat buffer and also a rain garden to collect rainwater which might be beneficial for rainwater harvesting system. The site is free from tall structure hence allowing maximum wind to be collected where else the site is also relatively flat compared to the surroundings which may prompt for a common foundation.
PROJECT 2 : THE ECO VILLAGE

DESIGN STRATEGY & SKETCHES The programs and needs of how an eco village function is being understood and is used to response to the site context to drive the spaces such as views and cultural context are respected and emphasized in the design. The genius loci of the site and design issue is being studied in depth which are then translated to strategies and solution to solve these problems. The following diagrams and rough sketches of how spaces and programs can solve certain issues.

BINARIES
Small communal spaces between large volume of blocks is needed to break down the community into smaller ones to enhance relationships
Shophouses in rochor are very adapatable to the different times hence design should be adaptable to future needs such as plug in elements
Allowing one to be able to personalize their corridor, balcony and planters will bring people out together to create wonderful works
The culture of trading has been predominent in this precint hence bringing this tradition into the architecture helps to respond to the historical context
The memories of rochor are filled with variety of contrasts good and bad hence this can be captured by integrating nature into an urban setting as the site provides.

SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY
Different spaces of communal usage should all tie back to one common space and integrate them so that they can function as an ecosystem.
Both horizontal and vertical connectivity are important in allowing the elderly to stay connected to the society through visual means
The past of the canal gives life to the community and surrounding hence the design should also provide life to the biodiversity.
It is important for the community to take care one another hence spaces are design to allow people to have resposibility of their own shared spaces.
A strong social community is needed hence spaces bring people together and promote them to help each other in times of need

ES SUSTAINABILITY The building tries to collect most of the rainwater when it rains, kept in bio retention basins and pump all the filtered water up to the holding tank to be slowly distributed to each roof gardens. This is to ensure the residents have water supply needed for irrigation during dry seasons. There are solar panels located on the roof of the staircase and lift motor room. For maximal exposure to sunlight. The solar energy harvested will be kept in the battery box next to the panels and will be used for 3 purposes : lighting up corridors, power up thewater pump and lighting up the roof garden lights. With Singapore being a non-seasonal country, the lower temperatures usually indicates when the monsoon seasons are where rainfall will occur frequently. With constant rainfall, there would be little to no sunlight during that point of time. As seen from the tables, the monsoon season does not occur very frequently throught the year. The table shows that Singapore has a good amount of sunlight for most part of the days throughout the year. This would mean that implementing the Solar Facade system on the building would be efficient as it would be

LIGHTING PLAN The four bedroom apartment is beng used to show the usage of the lighting plan. Most lights are recessed halogen downlight which are easy to maintain and easy to use too. Some lights such as wall washer spotlight are placed in key areas like study area, entrance foyer and walk in wardrobe where are used for display purposes. The living areas are being distinguished by its recessed ceiling with recessed cove strip light hence providing a different ambience from the other areas.

INTERNATIONAL BIM COMPETITION 2017 BCA ACADEMY The competition objective is to raise awareness and built competency in using Computational Design with BIM and VDC innovatively for DFMA.The brief is a concept design for an educational building in BCA Academy done innovatively through engaging computational design, analysis and optimization with DFMA approach, satisfying sustainability, constructability and productivity considerations. Our team has came out with a kinetc facade detail using dynamo as part of the objective and also using PPVC as the key construction tool to boost productivity. Apart from that, my main role was to design meaningful open spaces such as the classrooms and landscape.

SITE ANALYSIS In depth site analysis is being done on site where we predetermine the solar gain areas and areas that need to be paid attention to such as the green spaces and existing solar panels on the other roof.
SITE PLAN DESIGN Using site response, a few massing is derived and the final is to respond to the grid of the site as well as creating terracing in the middle to allow sunlight to get to the other building’s solar panel.
INTERNATIONAL BIM COMPETITION 2017 : E.DU
DESIGN CONCEPT The spatial concept of the design is to bring nature closer to students and the staffs to enhance the outdoor learning experience and also having class balconies catered for students to use the space in many ways while the facade allows all this to happen through its sustainability features. The form takes respect from the side and landscape by following the grid of the site to achieve modular spaces while creating a language with the landscape by integrating with the current grid and buildings around.
SPATIAL CONCEPT The spaces are arranged in a mixed manner where administration and educational spaces crosses each other hence allowing more intercommunication to happen between the students and the lecturers, but most of the spaces are group according to the privacy of the space such as private spaces near the rooftop while more public spaces are placed near the sky terraces and podium. The circulation follows the grid achieved by reshaping the form such that the corridor of every space are placed behind the façade hence allowing one to connect with the landscape more, the daily circulation also requires one to go through a more revitalized landscape in the podium and sky terraces hence emphasizing the close connection with nature even in an urban environment.

MODULAR DESIGN ANALYSIS With the approach of DfMA, had been achieved due to the production style assembly used. Components are simplified as much as possible to reduce overall construction cost and complexity of maintenance which improve the constructability of the building. We had also use common parts across the product lines as we applied Prefabricated Prefinished Volumetric Construction (PPVC) in the construction method of the building. We created a family in Revit file for the modular where a group technology is applied and inventory time is reduced which resulted in minimization of assembly time. Hence, we encourage modular design through our idealization.

PPVC SYSTEM A series of Prefabricated prefinished volumetric construction modules and bathroom units are designed to fit the grid axis hence making this the design massing and volume while assuring efficiecy.
PEFORATION MODULE SYSTEM The building is being tested for solar radiation analysis before the facade panels are being placed, the analysis has helped to generate the location needed to have more cooling as shown in the diagram hence this determines the amount of perforation needed in certain facade panels which is design through a series of dynamo key aspects.

KINETIC SOLAR FACADE We created a manufacturing cells through Dynamo by collaging the design of panel together. The transformation of panel that reacts with sunlight can be programmed through Dynamo. This reduces the complexity of the panel and minimize the inventory time when a group technology is applied. This dynamo script allows the panels to respond to the direction of the sun. The normal of each triangular panels is programmed to follow the current sun direction. If the sun is directly shinning on the panel, the NCP will be 0.000, which means the panel is fully open, creating maximum sunshading. As the sun is away from the panel, it’s NCP will increase to 1.000, which means the panel is fully closed, creating views.

2
This project is a two week program done by the school to allow students to experience design thinking thus different course of students are mixed together in this trip to Cebu, Phillppines. With the skills taught in Singapore, the team is able to communicate well with the community and created a form of participatory design with the farmers of the rural community where we find out the issue of having lack of drying and storing area hence prompting the team to create a multi purpose greenhouse module that is easily constructed and portable. The protoype created is a smaller scale but yet the villagers are able to understand how it works and is willing to accept this project hence it is currently being assessed.

3 modules combined together to be able to form a bigger form of greenhouse for bigger communites hence this can boost the productivity of the crops for the farmers.
Materials used are affordable and easily sourced in the local area and an optional heater can be designed to it too to help boost the drying so they can sell the crops faster.

ADJUSTABLE VENTILATION SYSTEM The greenhouse is equipped with an expandable adjustable vent roof system which uses pole height mechanism hence allowing the farmers to adjust how big the opening of the ventilatiion will be depending on the height of the vent roof. The typical type will be three types of vent levels from low ventilation, to mid ventilatiion and high ventilation depending on the time of the day, the weather and the usage of the heater.

When raining, the user can close the roof vent to trap all the heat so that it can keep crops warm during the cooler season.
A normal ventilation would ensure that adequate amount of wind enters so that heat would not be loss quickly.
Greenhouse requires ventilation to speed up drying hence a full ventilation would help keep the greenhouse more fresh.

VERTICAL STUDIO ELECTIVE II RE-ENVISIONING THE KELONG This elective module focuses on off grid farming module pod which takes the concept of kelong. A current existing offshore aquaponic-hydroponic has been designed by previous batches and is being executed as a pilot project in school hence the current batch objective is to access the feasibility of this and find ways to improve this existing design. My team has been tasked to add on a filtration system and also integrate a rainwater harvesting system by improving the current rainwater collector roof canvas.

VERTICAL STUDIO ELECTIVE II : RE-ENVISIONING THE KELONG
The current prototype poses various problems such as water leakage in the canvas and unsteady crop production hence analysis is being done on it
The offshore pod offgrid aquaponic system module can be combined with other modules to form a community hence allowing expansion in the future.
The new design changes the way water is collected and also add on a natural filter and solar distilation to convert rainwater into drinkable water hence sustainable.
Detail drawings is done as accurate as possible because a prototype will be made and eventually it may be created to the existing module.
67
NEW PROTOTYPE Two new prototype has been designed and constructed where the first one integrates a natural sand filter and solar distlation to the current roof canvas design which helps to maximise rainwater collection and also designed in a way to store clean water more productively which can be used for the module. The second prototype creates an overlaping concept of solar distilation where a modular distilation is percieved in vertical form due to the lack of space hence it would be more efficient in converting rainwater to clean water in a more productive rate and also integrates well with the current design.

TECHNICAL SUBMISSIONS Through the 2nd year of studies, the main emphasis are on the technical submissions such as development control, structural plan and model and also building plan submissions which are all key technical submissions in the industry hence this helps us to prepare for the real world. These technicalities helped us in our annotation skills, awareness of compliance to the different regulations set by URA, LTA, NEA, BCA and many various organisations in Singapore thus this also helps us to ensure that our design is always feasible in the real world. These pratice has helped me to improve my revit skills in terms of annotations and also 3D modeling to showcase certain type of graphics too.
