KNOXVILLE KNOCKOUT After slow start, Alabama explodes in second half to rout Volunteers By Cecil Hurt Sports Editor

KNOXVILLE, TENN. | The game started with an eagle flying into Neyland Stadium. By the time it was over, it was more like vultures circling. Alabama left Tennessee’s carcass on top of Rocky Top on Saturday night, exploding in the second half to administer a 41-10 beating to the Volunteers. It was Alabama’s most one-sided win in the storied Southeastern Conference series since 1963, and its biggest win ever in Neyland Stadium. The No. 7 Crimson Tide got off to the slow start that has marked its recent Southeastern Conference road play, but reversed that trend in the second half, outscoring the Volunteers 28-0 over the final two periods. UA accumulated 536 total yards and got a recordsetting day from junior wide receiver Julio Jones, who caught 12 passes for 221 yards, the best single-game total ever for an Alabama receiver. “We really wanted to try and build and establish an identity,” Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban said. “I’m really proud of the way we dominated in the second half.” Jones didn’t score a touchdown in the game but had four catches of 30 yards or more. It isn’t some ethereal unicorn, or a misplaced Sasquatch ducking in and out of the Smoky Mountain hollows around Knoxville. The standard is real — and there are 15 minutes of undoctored film footage to prove it.

It’s called the third quarter of the Tennessee game. For the past few weeks, and certainly in the first half of Saturday night’s game at Neyland Stadium, introspective Crimson Tide fans might have started to wonder if they were expecting more than their team could give. While there has never been great concern about be-

ing unreasonable when it came to expectations for the Crimson Tide, perhaps a few followers might have thought that this year’s team just couldn’t put things together. They might have thought that expecting the offense to be a cohesive, quick-striking instrument of devastation was just too much to demand. SEE HURT | 9C

PHILADELPHIA | San Francisco’s in for a treat. The Giants are heading to the World Series. Juan Uribe hit a tiebreaking homer off Ryan Madson with two outs in the eighth inning and the Giants held off the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 Saturday night in Game 6 of the NL championship series. Surprise star Cody Ross and the pitching-rich Giants reached the World Series for the first time since 2002 and will host the Texas Rangers in Game 1 on Wednesday night. The Giants have never won the championship since moving to San Francisco in 1958. Slumping Phillies slugger Ryan Howard looked at a called SEE GIANTS | 3C

Auburn quarterback Cam Newtwon rushed for 217 yards in the No. 5 Tigers’ 24-17 win against No. 6 LSU. Auburn remains the only unbeaten team in the Southeastern Conference.

AUBURN | Cam Newton and No. 5 Auburn are the last unbeaten team in the SEC. Not even LSU’s defense could slow them down. With Newton’s standard mix of power and elusiveness, a huge play from Onterio McCalebb and a stingy performance from Nick Fairley and the defense, Auburn sur vived for a 24-17 victor y over No. 6 LSU on Saturday.
