McCarron, Cooper have career-high nights as No. 1 Alabama wins sixth straight against Tennessee

INSIDE

By Cecil Hurt Sports Editor

KNOXVILLE, T ENN. | Wearing a knee brace might have slowed AJ McCarron down slightly. The Tennessee defense couldn’t say the same. McCarron threw for a career-best 306 yards and four touchdowns and No. 1 Alabama cruised to a sixth straight victory over the Volunteers, smashing UT 44-13 at Neyland Stadium. “We came out and set the tone early and that is what we needed to do,” McCarron said. Freshman Amari Cooper caught two of McCarron’s passes for scores, while Kenny Bell and Michael Williams also had touchdown catches. Freshman T.J. Yeldon added two touchdown runs as the Crimson Tide amassed 539 yards of total offense. McCarron fi nished with 17 completion in 22 attempts, throwing no interceptions. Yeldon fi nished with a quiet, but efficient 129 yards rushing on 15 carries. Cooper’s fi rst touchdown came on Alabama’s second drive, as he waited wide-open in the end zone for a 23-yard pass from McCarron that gave UA a 7-0 lead. Tennessee answered later in the quarter with a Michael Palardy 32yard field goal. Alabama gradually pulled away from UT in the second quarter, although the Volunteers did themselves no favors with quarterback Tyler Bray throwing an unfathomable interception to C.J. Mosley to set up one Crimson Tide score and UT wide receiver Justin Hunter dropping what seemed to be a sure touchdown late in the half. SEE STOMP | 5C

Numbers don’t reflect it, but McCarron has Heisman Trophy qualities

Inside the numbers Facts and figures from Alabama’s game against Tennessee | 6C

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. J McCarron’s mind is probably a million miles from New York at the moment. The toughest tests still remain for his University of Alabama football team. But could his name — mentioned most in connection with the word “meniscus” earlier this week — be mentioned with the Heisman Trophy, too? The early frontrunner, West Virginia’s Geno Smith, has seen his candidacy go up in fl ames faster than a Morgantown couch. Plenty of players could step into his place based on statistics. Offensive statistics are up everywhere — even the SEC, although moreso elsewhere. McCaCECIL rron doesn’t have a catchy nickname like HURT AJ Football or total yardage numbers that look like the national debt. But he does win, and has to the tune of 19-1 in his career to date. It has been worth a Heisman for other quarterbacks, although invoking the name Gino Torretta probably won’t do much for most Alabama fans. SEE HURT | 6C

Bibb County’s Stacy sets Vandy rushing record

UWA dominates Shorter By Cameron Kiszla Special to The Tuscaloosa News

INSIDE COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

LIVINGSTON | Gary Johnston ran for three touchdowns and the West Alabama defense was able to hold the Shorter triple option offense to just one score as the Tigers trounced the Hawks 49-7 on Saturday. Johnston scored twice in the fi rst five minutes of the second half, including an 8-yard run that came just two plays after Reggie Hall returned the opening kickoff of the second half 79 yards to the Shorter 15-yard line. “We’ve been working on it all week,” Hall said “And we knew if we could get

the edge, it would be a big play every time. The fi rst time we got it, it opened up, but I didn’t have the cut back. The second time, it was wide open. I just made a play and my teammates blocked well.” Johnston cited that runback as a big momentum shift, as Shorter’s Eric SEE UWA | 9C

NASHVILLE, T ENN. | Luckily for Zac Stacy, he won’t be remembered for his last carry on a record-setting day. Vanderbilt overcame a fourth-quarter fumble by its senior running back, who rushed for 169 yards and a goahead touchdown in a 17-13 victory over Auburn on Saturday. Stacy, who played at Bibb County High, had 27 carries and became the school’s all-time rushing leader but
