Discovering Place World Tour PolyARCH4 In the Spring of 2010, I was one of 40 students chosen to participate on one of the College of Architecture and Planning’s premiere quadrennial study abroad experience: The World Tour PolyARCH4. Trekking through a total of 27 countries across Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia, students from all of the college’s departments learned together by blending course work into an intense day-by-day itinerary; we visited places, spaces, design professionals, buildings, gardens, and vernacular environments - urban, rural, and natural. Globalization and design, history and theory of architecture, design sketching, and studio design were courses undertaken through the duration of the study abroad.
/exploration
With the “world” as the classroom, my curious mind wrestled with sketchbooks, traditional drawing media, and a collective dedication for ‘design’ to actuate more sustainable environments - compiled in a rich learning environment soars ‘on-the-fly’. Daily research, analysis, observing, reacting, recording, reflecting, and design experimentation frame the learning mosaic.

/exploration Defining a Narrative My experience on World Tour taught me how iconic design, which defining our architectural era, must still integrate this timeless art-form of placemaking in order to be successful. I catalogued all of my reactions and explorations from this backpacking trip into a design library of sketches. The result was a formulation of my own contextual narrative about people and place; a transliteration of a pattern of process and observation into another of circulation and place-making. These are design expirementations, scanned from my en-route sketchbook, that were used to develop the framework for a charette about applying these principles to a design in my hometown.

Transit Piazza Hometown etown Studio Charette This unique ue travel-based design-studio built towards a final studio charette arette project wherein I re-developed a site in my hometown n of Carmel, IN. Utilizing the design principles I discovered d en-route, I demonstrated the development of great public architecture hitecture and public spaces in a transit hub infused with global al sensitivities and precedents from my design library. The scope of the project was to redevelop a 375,000 sq. foot piazza thatt included a station, plaza, parking, pathways and refurbishing ng existing structures on the site. I used precedents from my studies and sketches on World Tour; mainly from studying various public transit centers in Germany and China as well as the Piazzo del Campo in Sienna, Italy.

Transcending Topology Heritage Museum Julia Carson was a public figure in the neighborhood of Indianapolis and her life evolved from growing up in this neighborhood to fighting for it as a civil rights activist for all of her life. In the Spring of 2011, her foundation held a competition to look at an urban neighborhood with an existing community center and think of the ways to design an extension of her tribute while giving an identity to the place that is meaningful to its context. This is the idea of a living museum is a tribute to her work and identity; a gesture to her work in the areas of civil rights and activsm that takes a viewer through a physical journey of her upward struggles, highlighting different aspects about her and her path through its beginning, transcending and return to the neighborhood she worked hard to represent.

Conceptualizing Place The proposed heritage museum sits on a site with an existing community center. This museum takes a user on a topological journey; bringing someone down and gradually ascending them back up into the neighborhood and community she stood for at the end. The main events seek to evoke emotional responses through taking the viewer on a winding journey exploring the themes of topology and place, massivness and sequence through the process of ascending and decending through the space.

Mythology of Sardis exploration of precedent & earth Sardis, the capital of the Lydian Empire located in western Turkey, was one of the great ancient cities of Asia Minor and thrived under the rule of King Croesus. The Archaeological Exploration of Sardis, a joint excavation sponsored by the Harvard Art Museums and Cornell University, has been exploring Sardis since 1958; uncovering architectural features and artifacts from Lydian, Persian, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine alike. One of the most impactful experiences in my life and as a designer was serving as the site Architect during the 2011 season, where I explored the ideas of mythology, earth and place.
/exploration
Existing and working within the context of a living museum, precedents of the past and the sequence of the present blended seamlessly. Every day was an unpredictable paradox that brought awareness to the contrasting themes of precedent and place, beginnings and endings, earth and time. My discipline involved surveyance, excavation drawings and eventually analysis of data collected to learn more about the people of this time. This is a journey through the idea of ruin as a transformative process.

The majority of my days were spent teetering over ruins and drawing the architectural features of the excavation as they were slowly uncovered. Trench drawings began systematically by locating and collecting points in space using regional surveying methods conducted by a Total Station. The process then involved creating hand-drawn, scaled sketches of the architectural features and then digitizing these drawings, by tracing their sequencing in AutoCAD. This is a journey through the process of sketching the excavation of Field-49. It concludes with an of understanding phase sequence in elevation. layers of earth and the mythologies of precedent and place.

We spent weeks surveying the existing conditons of the synagogue for our study and for the eventnual execution by other architects ast Smithgroup + JJR to complete the roof. This is the story of my journey about understanding and preserving the past through the implemetation of survey methods.

Intervention of Language We took the survey of the North and South walls, and explored stepped roof sections in order to minimize the effect on the landscape and keep the shelter closer to the fabric. The patterns of the roof involved a double truss system that eliminated a bottom chord and avoided intermediate components. The Synagogue roof was considered together with the roof of another, closeby site feature, and followed the same pier spacing in order to have maintained the similar identity to this language.

Gaia Dailogues A journey through sketching... This project was the ultimate accumulation of my study in how the creating of place is formulated by earth. Wedged in the middle of two distinct neighborhoods, this park eplores the ideas of higher forces and elements resolving their materiality conflicts to create a new mythology of place. This park features many landscape and urbanistic elements using the manipulation of earth as a material to inform and promote mingling and placemaking. The intent was to create a space that transcended time through its ability to promenade users across a sequencing of informal and formal events; ultimately the success of which occurred by connecting people to a sustainable identity through the context of place.

Interpretations Portraits of Place World Tour was about the art of human observation and of living in the moment. Seeing and understanding our environment reinforces one of the most essential experiences in life; it formulates the sense of space and time that is crucial to an intellectual ordering of life. I spent a large part of my journey sketching in order to understand the people, places and systems that honor sustainable environments. Each sketch is invested with a narrative that links to acts of observation and documentation through engaging afresh with our primary senses.

Nihongo Packaging Study Form, function and space should be challenged at any scale. Nihongo is a brand centered on the acquisition of Japanese language and customs. This system seeks to elevate their ideas of simplistity by using a combination of motifs ascribing to Japanese astheticism in a fresh, clean way. The oragami-inspired packaging is a continuous fold-out that fans out to cradle three CD’s. The fold out condenses down into a simple square package. The crane motif continues through out the cover, as well as on the individual CDs. Red, Green and Blue were all the traditional ink palette used in wood block Japanese relief prints; each color correlates to the level of language CD.

Inova Louden Hospital Expansion Proposal INOVA hospital system had a vision for expanding their hospital campus based on their three major markets: Community-based coordinated care, destination clinical services and hospital based care. This was a competition project for which Smithgroup identified three major conceptual phases for the hospital’s master planning, all of which encompassed the main ideas of extending circulation, expanding bed towers, creating a new entry system and preparing for future growth. As an intern, the majority of my work consisted of support graphics, renderings, drawings and diagraming these concepts for the final proposal, boards and presentation.

This was my first experience understanding how to take a project from Design Development into the Design Document and Construction Administration phases. Kaiser uses a wide variety of standards and implements evidence based design as part of their “Total Health Environment” brand. My involvement has been to develop plan changes and administer equipment layouts, and the experience has been very valuable towards my understanding of health care design.
