The Average EESTECer Statistics Team Survey 2020
About the brochure Dear EESTECers, This publication constitutes the biggest project of our Team this year. At the end of January, we asked you to participate in a survey under the name “The Average EESTECer” and we were more than thrilled to see the huge reach our survey had. In fact, an amazing number of 444 EESTECers filled the form we shared, giving us the opportunity to extract some interesting results from a rather significant sample. Therefore, first of all, we would like to sincerely thank each and every one of the people who participated in this survey and helped us with our project. As we stated when we shared the form with you, our aim was to gather information so as to shape a clear picture of the manpower of the Association. In order for this picture to be as complete as possible, we encouraged every member to participate regardless of age, years in EESTEC, field of studies or experience and we were happy to see that the expected diversity was achieved. The name “Average EESTECer” was given in an attempt to determine similarities in people’s past and trends in future decisions both inside and outside EESTEC and some common characteristics that they may share. Within EESTEC, the results can be used by any person or team that has to do directly with people, detect what may be missing and get possible hints about its improvement. Of course this brochure will be available to everyone, therefore
01
The Average EESTECer EESTEC Statistics Team
anyone can determine the most common choices in the Association, form their own ideas about its growth and place themselves close, or not, to the “Average” type. On the other hand, the results that refer to the status of EESTECers as students and future employees are most likely useful to external parties. Again, teams and people responsible for any collaborations, relations or contacts in general with external entities, such as companies or universities, could refer to this analysis during their communication. All in all, we hope you find this brochure interesting and helpful in a way. We may have correlated some questions with each other, but you can definitely use your creativity and come to your own conclusions through it. In case any questions arise regarding either the brochure or the survey as a whole, please don’t hesitate to contact us in the following email addresses: statistics-coordinator@eestec.net or data-team@eestec.net Enjoy your reading! #DataIsTheNewSexy

Agenda Like the survey itself, its results can be divided into two categories. The first one concerns the steps and the plans of EESTECers inside the Association: years as members, roles that they have assumed locally, participation in events and interests about future plans. Here we also have a separate section about the international level of EESTEC that was filled only by the people that are interested in it. In this section we track the numbers of BATCAMs and how long they have been one, as well as roles that people have assumed internationally and their intention to do so in a future call. The second category contains information about the studies of the members: years and fields of studies, level of degree, remaining time to finish and plans after that. There are also some questions about the number of EESTECers that are already working, doing an internship or plans to do both. A series of questions from the external part are going to be presented first, since they contain general information of the participants, such as age and countries they live in. Finally, among the questions, you may find some graphs about aspects that we decided are useful to be related to each other. Note: The area that we are focusing on each time will be stressed out in bold

Within EESTEC
As presented in these two graphs, most people join EESTEC for networking and self development purposes, which is something that keeps them motivated even after their recruitment. It can be also concluded that EESTECers are more interested in interpersonal skills, because their motivation comes from the potential of soft skills development and from people they have met.

A bit more than 50% of the people who filled the form are, or have been in the past, part of a local board. From the rest, 79 of them have an intention of joining it, while 104 of them are hesitating. 54 people have no intention of

Applying to be part of the Organising Committee for a local event seems to be either easier or just more popular than for an international one. 73.42% of the participants have assumed at least one role in an OC for a local event, in comparison to the 52.7% that joined the OC for an international one. Below, their distribution in the positions of Head Organiser, Coordinator and Team Member is presented. As expected, the relation between these roles is similar in both cases. However, the percentage of the Coordinators in international events is rather lower than the respective one in locel events (37.18% vs. 50.92% accordingly). That might derive from the different structures of the Organising Committees among branches. &IMRK TEVX SJ ER 3VKERMWMRK 'SQQMXXII JSV E 03'%0 IZIRX

When it comes to people with no such experience, out of 118 people that claimed not to have been a part of an Organising Committee for a local event, the vast majority (83.9%) said that either they would definitely go for it or they might try to join an OC. Only 19 of them are not interested in being part of an Organising Committee. Likewise, out of 210 people who stated not to have been a part of an Organising Committee for an international event, 82.38% will either certainly or probably join an OC in the future, while the rest are again not interested in such activity. EESTEC offers plenty of different fields to work on and contribute to its growth. But what about when someone becomes an Alumnus? According to the following graph, there’s a lot of willingness from people to stay connected to the Association mostly through travelling, but also through Knowledge Transfer and Participation in gatherings and local events. “Other Ideas” include helping their branch with training delivery, applying as facilitators for events or helping with contacting companies and financially support their branch.

It is known that EESTECers like to travel and international events are the best way to do so. In fact the average EESTECer has participated in around 3 international events (2.626 to be precise)! This number results without counting the IMWs since they are more common and attract more people. If we count these as well, the average number increases to 4.12 - therefore 4 events per EESTECer. The type of these events is depicted below. 56.08% of EESTECers have participated in at least one IMW and 43.92% in at least one Workshop. Only 12.38% have participted in an Advance Skills or an Exclusive Workshop, since they are not that frequent. However, as the following graph shows, 67.12% of EESTECers have an interest in participating in these two types. The fact that the majority of people that ďŹ lled the form prefer to participate in an Exchange is rather surprising. ;LEX X]TI SJ IZIRXW LEZI ]SY EXXIRHIH#

Of course events are organised by branches and some of them tend to attract more people than others. The 5 most popular branches to visit are: LC Madrid, LC Zurich, JLC St. Petersburg, LC Krakow and LC Istanbul. The main reason to choose the favourite branch is by far the city, followed by its people. In fact, the city is the main reason to visit all of the top 5 branches.

According to the survey, the vast majority of BATCAMs (80%) joined International Teams and Projects in the first two years in EESTEC. Therefore it seems that many people know that they want to be part of the international aspect of EESTEC as soon as they are aware that they have this option.
As expected, most BATCAMs have been Team Members at least once, since it’s probably the smoothest way to enter this community. However, the 34.1% of people that assumed the Coordinator position is also relatively high. 6SPIW EWWYQIH MR MRXIVREXMSREP PIZIP

Half of the people interested about the international level of EESTEC are thinking about applying to be BATCAMs in the next call in August, but they don’t know for which position. From the 102 people that they are sure they will apply, 59 (57,8%) want to be members, 19 (18,7%) Coordinators, 16(15,7%) Leaders and the other 8 EESTECers Board Assistants. These numbers are promising that they can cover the majority of BATCAM positions in the folowing year.

As it is known, EESTECers are students. But how long will it take untli they are ready to join the job market? In other words, how much time does the average EESTECer need to complete his/her studies? This piece of information was gathered in January 2020, therefore as time passes by, it changes accordingly. The graph that follows, includes the countries or categories that were mentioned three or more times. The “Anyâ€? (10 replies) and “I don’t knowâ€? (12 replies) options are not present. Some people focused on the reason to choose a county and not the country itself and there are a few criteria. Some pointed out that they are interested in the university or the speciďŹ c program and not the country. Simirarly to the previous question, 88.29 % of the participants of the survey would like to work abroad after they ďŹ nish studying. The graph below shows the exact countires and it includes options chosen by 3 or more people. It doesn’t include the “I don’t knowâ€? answers (30), which are more than the countries to study in, something that indicates bigger uncertainty. However, more people chose “anyâ€? or “any european countryâ€?, so there’s a lot more flexibility. Again some people don’t share a preference for the country but they mostly care about the quality of life, the working condition and the salary. Secondary criteria are the ability to communicate in English, the proximity, the climate and the chance to work in the person’s ďŹ elds of studies.

Various Correlations Our first idea was to determine whether the involvement of people in the international level of EESTEC makes them more internationally oriented in general. Therefore, we associated this involvement with their intention to study or work abroad. Regarding the first, 86.63% of BATCAMs would like to study abroad versus 85.45% of non BATCAMs that want to do the same. Therefore, it seems that these two are not so much related. In the working abroad question, the percentage of BATCAMs (91.86%) is slightly higher than the one of non BATCAMs (87.32%) that intend to work in a different country. Apart from that, we examined whether BATCAMs are more inclined to join the local board. Out of the 172 BATCAMs, 110 are or have already been part of a local board. Therefore it seems that the one leads to the other in a way. After our analysis, it’s concluded that most people are interested in joining the local board (or at least are considering so), regardless if they are BATCAMs or not.

While it is expected for more experience people to possess the HO and Coordinator positions in an OC, there are people that choose to take this step even on their ďŹ rst year, in both kinds of events. In an attempt to determine the students that are most satisfied with their studies, there has been a correlation between the respective questions. In order to have a sufficient sample, fields of studies chosen by less than 20 people are not taken into consideration. The studies were rated from 1-5 and only the rate with the highest percentage will be mentioned. The two fields which had the majority of their students rating them as 5 out of 5 are Computer Science with 41.17% and Software Engineering with 38.46%. Regarding the latter, the same amount of people gave it a 4/5 note.
