We have given each block a colour from the four-colour printing process as we believe it is ubiquitous within the print/design/ media world which neatly ties in to

SHOP WORK

Our concept is based on colour coded lines which will only show a rough direction into the relevant areas: Media, Workshop, Design and Tower. We believe that it is more important to concentrate on the individual blocks rather than specific rooms. This means that our system is very flexible and adaptable as long as the blocks don’t change.

that a different, perhaps more industrial approach would have a much better impact on the usability of the buildings.

TOWER

Upon investigation of the existing wayshowing system in LCC we found that there are problems navigating around the spaces. The current system is not very consistent in its application and the user often isn’t assured of going in the right direction. The signs are very badly placed, illegible and it seems that the function was lost in the aesthetics. After the renovations of the building it became very difficult to distinguish different areas and how they connect with each other. The new wayshowing system should have made this easier but we believe

the history of the LCC. The colours we chose work very well with the surface colour of either grey and white, are of high contrast and enhance the environment. We suggest to use coloured strips on the floor, arrows and pictogr ams guiding the user into the right direction. MEDIA WORKSHOP DESIGN TOWER

In addition to the lines on the floor, high placed signage on the library bridge helps to find the way during peak time. Wheelchair access is also highlighted through the use of colour and a large pictogram which can be seen by a wheelchair user.

Directional lines going up the stairs will make it clear that the tower block will be on the right hand side and the workshop block on the immediate left whereas the media and design block can be found straight ahead. Two directional lines on the upper part of the wall help indicate the way from the top of the stairs.
