EFSUMB Newsletter European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology Edinburgh - 6 – 8 December 2009

Euroson 2009/ British Medical Ultrasound Society Annual Scientific Meeting Euroson is returning to Edinburgh where it was last held in 2001. The style of the meeting will follow a similar pattern to the BMUS ASM in Liverpool in 2008 but quite different in some ways from the last time Euroson was in the UK. There will be 3 parallel scientific sessions covering the hottest topics in Ultrasound at the moment over a 3 day conference. It is expected that the majority of the speakers will be invited experts from all over Europe but with some from further afield. There will of course be room for proffered papers which are encouraged. As well as the scientific sessions there will

be a number of hands-on workshops some concentrating on basic ultrasound techniques but others on selected more advanced techniques. These would not be possible without the strong involvement and encouragement of the manufacturers and we are very grateful to them for this. These workshops also require an extensive faculty of teachers and we are indebted to them for their hard work and enthusiasm. The National Point of Care Ultrasound group (NPoCUS) are holding their 2nd Annual Meeting during our meeting and we welcome them and hope they will enjoy

being part of our meeting. BMUS ASM would not be what it is were it not for the social programme which this year centres around a Ceilidh – a traditional Scottish entertainment involving dancing – always enjoyed by the majority. We hope many delegates will come from all over Europe to enjoy the good science, the very popular workshops and the traditional Scottish hospitality. EFSUMB Newsletter meets Denmark Dr Lars Bolvig

Facts on Denmark 3 3 3 3

Danish Society of Diagnostic Ultrasound was founded in 1974 and joined EFSUMB the same year. The current interview between the president Dr Lars Bolvig and the Editor of the EFSUMB Newsletter, Professor Michael Bachmann Nielsen took place in April 2009. Dr Lars Bolvig is the head of the Ultrasound Division at the Department of Radiology at Århus University Hospital. Århus is the second largest city in Denmark. "I started with ultrasound in 1979 and became responsible the specialist training in ultrasound at the department in 1992. I do all types of ultrasound including interventional ultrasound. My special interest for several years has been musculoskeletal ultrasound, which I perform both at the hospital and at a private clinic."

man as well, since both languages are a part of the knowledge acquired at elementary school. Both the board and our members are very happy with the journal."

Website 5 We have had a website for more than 10 years, all Newsletters and courses are available on the website. The website www.duds.dk is in Danish with a small sub-section in English.

Training in ultrasound in Denmark 5 The Society holds basic as well as advanced ultrasound courses according to the EFSUMB recommendations for training. However, in Denmark all doctors are allo-

wed to perform ultrasound and the DSDU cannot give official creditation. "Many clinical specialities contact the DSDU asking for courses, these courses are coordinated by our education committee." Ultrasound is now part of the curriculum for training of specialists in radiology, OB GYN, abdominal surgery, rheumatology and orthopaedic surgery. The Society has an annual meeting (or congress) lasting two days, this year in October in Copenhagen and a one-day meeting in the spring. Next year the meeting will be held together with the EUROSON congress.

Congresses 5 The Danish have a long tradition for hosting congresses in ultrasound. Nine congresses on interventional ultrasound, the WFUMB meeting in 1991 and EUROSON in 2003. In 2010 the EUROSON returns to Copenhagen, this time the conference will be held at the Royal School of Architecture in the beautiful old shipyard district called "Holmen" near down town Copenhagen. The area has modern conference facilities and a charming atmosphere at the waterfront. There is easy access to transportation (water bus), accommodation as well as a beautiful view of the Royal palace and the new opera house. We look forward to see you in Wonderful Copenhagen in August 2010.

The Danish Society of Diagnostic Ultrasound 5 Anyone with an interest in ultrasound can be a member of the Society. "A guess would be that one third are radiologists, one third are nurses or sonographers and one third are clinicians". The distribution of members is mirrored in the board.

The official journal 5 The DSDU joined bulk subscription to the official EFSUMB journal – Ultraschall in der Medizin/European Journal of Ultrasound – several years ago. "There are no language problems in that, you would be surprised that everyone in Denmark speaks English, and most understand Ger-

EUROSON SCHOOL

Dear all It is with great pleasure that we announce the EUROSON SCHOOL – International Course in Contrast Enhanced Ultrasound in Liver, Biliary, Pancreatic and Gastrointestinal Disease which will take place on 17-19 September 2009 in Bologna, Italy,

and we would be grateful if you could notify your colleagues and society members. Like no other technique before, US contrast agents have revolutionized diagnostic ultrasound. In 2004, the European ultrasound societies developed guidelines on the use of US contrast agents in liver diseases. Although the main focus is still

on liver diseases, it is accepted that US contrast agents can also add a great deal of diagnostic value in extra hepatic organ disease, such as in pancreatic and renal diseases, which are now covered by the EFSUMB guidelines updated in 2008 (<http://www.efsumb.org>www.efsumb.org), in blunt abdominal trauma and in gastrointestinal disease. I would very much like to encourage you to attend this international course on contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in Bologna. It takes place September 17th – 19th 2008 and is supported by EFSUMB (Euroson School). Over the three days of the Course the attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the use of CEUS in liver and gastrointestinal diseases. Live demonstrations are planned in order to better clarify the simplicity of the technique and its efficacy and to show tips and tricks of CEUS performance. Moreover, since previous experience is fundamental in medicine, a few sessions will be devoted to the presentation of video clips by international experts. These sessions will be made separate for advanced operators and for beginners, since the latter need to fix the most typical aspects, whereas the former, who well know the typical aspects, would like to see more rare cases in order to be ready to recognize them in case they will come one day to their observation. Finally, Bologna has not only a long-standing tradition in medical science (the Faculty of Medicine dates back to the 13th Century and you can still visit the ancient anatomical theatre used for dissections, more than four centuries old) but is also a warm attractive historical town. It is renowned in Italy and worldwide for its delicious cuisine and unique specialities, like tortellini or mortadella. In September the climate is mild and apt to stroll around in the historical centre, in the evening after the scientific sessions. You can find out more about this educational course as well as how to register by visiting our website and downloading the program (please click on this link for the course programme: http://www.efsumb.org/intro/EUROSONfinalProgram.pdf Yours sincerely, Fabio Piscaglia, Luigi Bolondi
