TheEFSUMBawardedherthehonorary fellowship,honoringnotonlyIryna'scontributiontothedevelopmentofultrasoundin UkraineandhersupportofUkrainian EFSUMBmemberswhofledthewar,butat thesametimebowingtoallRomaniancolleagueswho,sometimesattheriskoftheir lives,continuetocarefortheirpatientsor, asrefugeesfromabroad,supporttheirfellowcitizensandcolleagueswhoremained intheirhomeland.

Nooneknewhowmanycolleagueswill makethejourneytoRomania,whileatthe sametimeintheneighboringcountrythe RussiantroopsarewagingawarofexterminationagainsttheUkrainiannation.However,theadmirableandunflinchingoptimismoftheRomanianhosts,thediverse programwithprominentandgreatspeakersfromallovertheworldwasconvincing: morethan1000participantsfrom48countriescametoTimisoara,greetedbyearly summerweather,carriedawaybythegreat joyofseeingeachotheragainandenjoying a “ real ” congresswithpersonalencounters, andoverwhelmedbytheincrediblehospitalityofourRomanianfriends.Thenumbers(seeinfobox1)speakforthemselves: thiscongresswashighlysuccessfulandwe wereveryhappytobeco-presidentsofthis eventtogetherwithCristinaChammas (WFUMB)andIoanSporea(Romania).Of course,onecanneverexperiencethewhole congress,whichtookplacein8lecturehalls intheTimisoaraConventionCenternear thegrandioseOperaHouseandinanother twohallsintheRegionalBusinessCenter (STUC).Nevertheless,wewouldliketo shareourpersonalhighlightswithyou.

Thevarietyoftopicswasimpressive,rangingfrombasicresearch(imagingwithshear waves,generatedbylaserinducedcavitationbubbles)toexperimentalclinicalresearch(3Dultrasoundexvivoimagingof surgicalspecimensasapotentialsubstitute forfrozensections;multiparametricultrasoundofliverparenchyma,thyroidgland andkidneytransplants)toartificialintelligencefordifferentiationofbenignandmalignantrenaltumors.Equallypleasingwas thepartlyoutstandingscientificqualityof thecontributions.Particularlystimulating wasthelivelydiscussionamongtheyoung researchers,whichalsotookplaceata highlevel.Itwasnoteasyforthejurytodecideontheprizewinners(seeInfoBox2, Prizewinnersoralpresentations).

Rarelyhasacongressbeenheldundersuch unfavorableomensasthe33rdEUROSON inTimisoaratogetherwiththe18th WFUMBCongress,the25thNationalUltrasoundConferenceoftheRomanianUltrasoundSocietyandthefirstWFUMB& EFSUMBStudentUltrasoundCongress (STUC):nooneknewforsurewhetherthe Covidwavewouldactuallysubsideintime.

TenUkrainianUltrasound ExpertsinTimisoara! ItwasaspecialpleasurethattenUkrainian EFSUMBmembersacceptedtheinvitation toattendthecongress.Someofthemhad totravelunderverydifficultconditions, suchasProfessorOlegDynnykfromKyev, whowasoneoftheinvitedspeakers.Iryna Bekalohadalsocome,fromFrance,where shehadflownwithherfamilyfromOdessa.

Fourultrasoundexpertswerehonoredwith speciallectures:forthefirsttimeaTurkish colleague,ProfessorSühaSüreyyaÖzbek fromIzmir,heldtheEUROSONLecture.For thefirsttimetwoEUROSONlectureswere presentedinoneyear.Andforthefirst timeinEFSUMBshistoryanEUROSONlecturewasheldbyawoman:ProfessorMaija RadzinafromLatvia.The17thDEGUMLecturewasdeliveredbyagynecologist:ProfessorConstantinvonKaisenbergfrom HannoverspokeabouttheDEGUMexperiencewiththeestablishmentandquality improvementofultrasoundguidelines,a topicthatisalsoofgreatconcerntousin theEFSUMB.Myspecialfavoritewasthe lastspeciallecture,theHansHenrikHolm lectureonLungUltrasoundwasgivenby ProfessorChristianBorbjergLaurseninthe presenceofthefirstHansHenrikHolm LaureateChristianNolsoe(bothDenmark). AimsandMethods Uterinestrainanalysisbyultrasound speckletrackingisadaptivelyadjustedto theuterineanatomy. Wecomplementfrequencyandamplitudefeatureswithnovel featuresbasedonUPvelocityandcoordination,whichareextractedbydedicated spatiotemporalanalysisthroughk-spacerepresentations( ▶ Fig.1).Theextractedfeatureswerefirstevaluatedin11healthyvolunteerstodifferentiatebetweenthe differentphasesofanaturalmenstrualcycleandthenevaluatedin73IVFpatients topredictsuccessfulfertilizationbefore embryotransfer.TheoptimalfeaturecombinationwasinvestigatedbyMLforimprovedpredictionofembryoimplantation. Results Inhealthyvolunteers,theobtainedquantitativefeaturevaluesareinagreementwith thosereportedintheliteraturebasedon qualitativevisualinspection. InIVFpatients,significantdifferencesinUP amplitude,frequency,velocity,andcoordinationareassociatedwithsuccessfulfertilization(Table1),possiblyduetoreduced microstreamingandshearstressimposed totheembryo. 79.4%predictionaccuracyisobtainedby ML(5-foldcross-validation)withonlythree features(amplitude,velocity,coordination) forallthe73IVFpatients.
