EFSUMB Newsletter European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology
Dear EFSUMB members
EFSUMB urges you to participate in the World and EUROSON Congress of Ultrasound, and combining the Dreiländertreffen Congress WFUMB 2011 (26–29 August 2011) which promises to be a great event, with much to learn for everybody in many advanced ultrasound technologies, with the possibility of refreshers courses and practical sessions. Experts from all over the world will present the best up to date information in the various fields of ultrasonography. As at all EUROSON Congresses there will be the EUROSON lecture entitled ‘Can liver elastography replace liver biopsy – today or sometime?’ delivered by Prof Ioan Sporea of Romania. The Young Investigator Award will take place with eight participants – Patel Preena (UK), Marco Baron Toaldo (Italy), Jaromir Vachutka (Czech Republic), Jens Kessler (Germany), Peter Zechner (Austria), Ioannis Moschos (Greece), Simona Bota (Romania) and Klazina Kooiman (The Netherlands) all submitting latest research for the 1,000 euro EFSUMB prize. A Meet the Pioneers‘ Session will take place in Vienna with the opportunity to hear and meet some of the great names in ultrasound. The Congress organisers have worked extremely hard to produce this exciting programme in the beautiful city of Vienna, in the impressive ACV Congress centre and with a social programme appropriate to
the status of Vienna as a cultural capital. In the current economic climate it is extremely important that every National Society helps to communicate among their members the significanc of this event and stimulate the participation of its members, since the scientific rewards justify the cost. We hope you do agree and you will do your best to support this and promote this event among your colleagues.

EFSUMB Newsletter Meets Poland Population: Over 38,500,000 Area: 312,685 Km² Capital: Warsaw EFSUMB members: 349 Interview with Professor Wiesław Jakubowski (President of PTU and Delegate to EFSUMB) and Professor Andrzej Nowicki (Past President of the Polish Ultrasonic Society) by Professor Michael Bachmann Nielsen in June 2011.
Ultrasonic Society PUS (in polish: Polskie Towarzystwo Ultrasonograficzne PTU)”. PUS is a group of physicians of twenty different medical specializations and is dedicated to scientific, didactic and organization activity.
The Newsletter ▼▼
PUS issues newsletters twice a year; in spring and in the fall. The Society is regularly publishing books on US (since 1990 – 18 titles), quarterly Journal Ultrasonografia (in polish). Every third year the special book, to the Standards in Ultrasonography (in polish) is published. In July 2011 we will issue the fourth edition of Standards.
Courses & US Training ▼▼
The Polish Society is providing continuous education organizing courses on three levels: basic ultrasound physics, basic general ultrasound and post-graduate ultrasound for different US specialisations.
Professor Wiesław Jakubowski, M.D., Ph.D., President of PTU and Delegate to EFSUMB.
Professor Andrzej Nowicki, Past President of the Polish Ultrasonic Society.
The Beginnings ▼▼
Professor Jakubowski: “In 1981 the first compound scanner Picker was purchased to the Central Clinic Hospital in Warsaw and I was the first to start using it. After initial experiments I and some other enthusiasts created a group of users of US imaging and in 1983 we have established the Ultrasound Section of the Polish Radiological Society. After 3 years of the activity of the Section the number of their members was so large that we decided to start in 1990 a new organization – Polish

The PUS provide or supervise different kind of courses. The “main stream” teaching is provided in weekly courses organized by Ultrasonic School RoztoczeZamosc (Roztoczanska Szkoła Ultrasonografii -Zamosc). There are different levels of the courses: basic on general US – five days long; five days long discipline – heart, Doppler, gastroenterology, musculoskeletal, superficial organs (breast, thyroid), lungs, laryngology, obstetrics, gynaecology, general practice medicine and more – oriented courses with extensive practical exercise on patients ; one day of physics and instrumentation; 2.5 days long advanced course and meet the professor classes. Each physician has to pass an exam before being certified to do ultrasound – the exam goes in two parts, theoretical – about 70 multiple choice questions – and practical examination is carried on in Ultrasonic School Roztocze-Zamosc. Our Society includes only doctors – both radiologists and clinicians and research scientists. We have no sonographers performing US examinations.
The National Congress in Poland ▼▼
The national conference is held every second year. The previous one was in Cracow in June 2010 and the next will be in Olsztyn in May, 2012. The last, 10th Congress in Cracow was the jubilee one. It had a substantial attendance of about 1000 participants. Twelve Scientific Sessions covered all the important disciplines with 22 invited speakers. There were also 8 post graduate courses and 6 sessions organized by manufactures of the US equipment.
Website ▼▼
We do have a website http://www.usgptu. waw.pl, however, no educational material is included in our pages. We have, however, access to the articles published in our quarterly journal “Ultrasonografia”.
Ultrasound in Poland Today ▼▼
Actually we have 1400 active members of PUS while an estimated number of physicians performing US imaging exceeds 8000. In Poland we have about 87,000 active medical doctors. We are very satisfied from the past cooperation with EFSUMB and hope to keep it this way in the future.
Update from Israeli Society for Diagnostic Ultrasound Population: 7,026,000 Area: 20,770 Km² Capital: Jerusalem EFSUMB members: 130 The Israeli Society for Diagnostic Ultrasound in Medicine (ISUDM) was founded in 1981 by three physician pioneers in the field of US: two radiologists and a gynecologist, in collaboration with Prof Barry Goldberg. The first Annual Meeting and Barry Goldberg Lecture were held on 1982. Since then, every year, very well

known radiologists, dedicated to US, are invited to lecture. Our Society is comprised of 130 members, all radiologists specialist in US. The Annual Meeting has over 200 participants – radiologists, technicians and nurses working in the Radiology Departments. Aside from the Annual Meeting, several courses on US are organized for physicians and technicians by our Society and by working places, both hospitals and external clinics. ISDU is part of the Israel Radiological Society (IRS) and shares a website with it: http://www.israel-radiology.org.il
The Israeli Society for Diagnostic Ultrasound in Medicine (ISUDM) is pleased to be bidding to invite the EFSUMB-EUROSON Congress to Tel Aviv in 2014. The ISDUM, together with the entire local medical community will spare no effort in preparing for this important Congress, should it be held in Tel Aviv. Situated on the crossroads of three continents, Israel is easily accessible from all corners of the globe and blessed with Mediterranean weather. Israel is one of the few countries where the ancient and modern meet and is the center of three great religions – Islam, Christianity and Judaism. Tel Aviv, Israel‘s business and cultural capital offers exclusive metropolitan hospitality. The city has all it takes to host the EUROSON Congress in a most successful way, offering an added value that cannot be matched elsewhere. Ranked by National Geographic among the world’s top beach cities (2010), by New York Times as “Capital of Mediterranean Cool” (2008) and the “world’s foremost entrepreneuri-
al hot spot” (2010). Tel Aviv is the ideal place to hold a professional convention. In recent years the city has cultivated its reputation as one of the Middle East’s most cutting-edge cosmopolitan centers, yet the real source of its seductive powers are in its overwhelming love of life. Tel Aviv and Israel both offer fascinating sites for social events, Accompanying Persons’ program and satellite symposia. Among possible locations: Nazareth, Tiberias – Sea of Galilee, Jerusalem, the Dead Sea, Eilat and others. From a scientific point of view, Israel is renowned for its many contributions to the medical and scientific world. Indeed, science and technology in Israel is one of the country‘s most developed sectors.
