The Young Investigator session is usually one of the highlights of the EUROSON conference. This year, however we had to cancel the conference, but we still want to keep some sessions in the form of webinars. We would like to welcome everyone interested to join our Young Investigator session on GoToWebinar on Friday June 12. 10–12 (CET). An invitation will be distributed through the EFSUMB homepage, and through EFSUMB members e-mails. A recording of the sessions will be available on the EFSUMB homepage in the member section after the webinar. The webinar will be free to join for all interested up to 600, but a pre-webinar registration is required. During the live sessions, presenters will have 7 min for presentations and 3 min for questions, so we hope there will be an active audience. The Young Investigator session bring new and brave projects to the stage, and we get to meet some new presenters and ask them directly about their interesting projects. This year we have a particularly interesting list of topics,

which we really look forward to hearing more about. The program is still not confirmed by all participants, so some changes may occur. The recording will be available on the EFSUMB website for later viewing. Welcome to an EFSUMB webinar on gastrointestinal ultrasound (GIUS) Thursday June 11., 14.00–16.00 CEST The last couple of months the world has moved from face-to-face encounters to online meetings. Although the physical EUROSON 2020 has been cancelled, we would like to offer you a taste of what we had to offer in Bergen with a webinar on gastrointestinal ultrasound. Gastrointestinal ultrasound (GIUS) has received increasing interest in recent years as the need of non-invasive tools for repeated investigations has escalated. EFSUMB has been crucial in the development the

first guidelines ever and recommendations in this field. The programme is focused on presenting these guidelines as well as the practical use of GIUS in IBD and in acute intestinal disorders. Programme: 14.00–14.05: Introduction: Kim Nylund (Chair) 14.05–14.30: Overview of the GIUS guidelines and position statements from EFSUMB: Odd Helge Gilja 14.30–14.55 GIUS and fibrosis in Crohn’s disease: Giovanni Maconi (to be confirmed) 14.55–15.20 GIUS and disease activity in ulcerative colitis: Christian Maaser 15.20–15.45 Ultrasound in acute intestinal disorders: Matthias Wüstner (to be confirmed) 15.45–16.00 Q and A with lecturers and conclusion As this is still work in progress, we are obliged to inform you that this is a preliminary programme and may be subject to change.

▪ lung ultrasound examination protocol for assessment of COVID-19 patients: Konrad Stock ▪ COVID-19 outbreak – the value of lung ultrasound for clinical decision making: Alessandro Zanforlin Dr Alessandro Zanforlin: Mobile Lung ultrasound Unit, Radiodiology service, Bolzano hospital, Pneumological Service of South Tyrol writes My interest on Chest ultrasound began in 2005 as I took part in the first Chest Ultrasound course for pulmonologists that took place in Bologna, then I completed the SIUMB general US theoretical/practical educational path.

Dr Alessandro Zanforlin

After completing the specialisation in pulmonology, I worked as a pulmonologist in Internal medicine ward from 2009 to February 2020 with special attention on research on clinical applications of chest ultrasound: pleural disease, diaphragm motion analysis, lung diseases and began since 2011 the collaboration with italian network of chest ultrasound performed that in the last years is known as “Accademia di Ecografia Toracica (AdET)” – Chest Ultrasound Academy. Together, organising many US courses, we have contributed to the diffusion fo chest ultrasound in italy (documented by a recent survey amid italian pulmonologist that sowed large diffusion of the technique, in particular in Northern italy). Our network takes care of research on chest US and continuous education and knowledge sharing in particular through our facebook group (now it takes account of more than 3700 members) and national congresses (the last one took place right in Bolzano, my city on 25 January 2020, with 120 participants and many others more in overbooking…).

In February I was transferred to the pulmonology Service of the Province of Bolzano (respiratory outpatients). After the beginning of the COVID emergency in Bolzano, in order of my experience in Chest US, I was called back to the Hospital and engaged by the Radiology department as a “mobile lung ultrasound unit”, with the aim of helping in technology assessment, teaching chest US to other colleagues (Emergency department, Intensive Care Unit in particular) and organising the Chest US activity in the hospital. After searching around the hospital all the US machines that were unused or underused because of COVID emergency, we redistributed the US apparels that were needed to activate the COVID-triage screening in the emergency department and for the new-COVID departments (normal COVID ward and COVID-ICU), to provide US empowerment of these wards and limit the US-machine movement between wards that would have been dangerous in terms of contamination. Then my daily activity was to perform the LungUS evaluation of COVID-ICU patients and monitor their lung condition, and perform the Lung-US screening in the ED. In addition of the conduction of US examinations, I took care to teach to the colleague the technique, so that some of them became progressively independent, contributing in covering the activity also in my absence. We have now collected precious informations about the use of chest US in those settings (ED and ICU) and we are now elaborating the data to share them with the scientific community.

Timișoara now has four public universities and as many private ones. The student population of the city, totalling around 60,000 students, lends the city a fresh, youthful vibe.

Ever since King Ferdinand I awarded Timișoara the status of University centre in 1920, the city has attracted the brightest minds in the country and beyond.

UNIVERSITY CENTER

Throughout its history, Timișoara has been a melting pot of cultures. An important Muslim community in the 17th century during Ottoman rule, and later, Hungarians, Serbs, Germans and Jewish all called the city their home. Currently, the Romanian Opera House, the imposing building in Victoriei Square, hosts the Opera, as well as the Mihai Eminescu Romanian National Theatre, the German State Theatre and the Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre. Moreover, services at the Catholic Dome are held even today in Romanian, Hungarian and German languages.

TRUE MULTICULTURALISM

In September 2016, Timișoara was elected 2021 European Capital of Culture, a title it shares with Novi Sad in Serbia and Eleusis, Greece. For one calendar year, the city will host a series of cultural events with a European dimension, such as exhibitions, concerts, plays and many more.

2021 EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE

Timișoara has been inhabited since ancient times, by Dacians and later the Romans, who named it Castrum Temesiense. First mentioned in 1212 as a citadel, by the 14th century it became an important outpost in the fight between Christendom and the Muslim Ottoman Turks. It was here that Hungarian and French crusaders gathered before the Battle of Nicopolis (1396), one of the last large scale crusades. From the 18th century, it developed around the fortified nucleus and later transitioned towards becoming an important economic and industrial centre. The city flourished between the interwar period and the Communist period, when its population tripled. On 22 December 1989, following a popular uprising, Timișoara became the first Romanian city free of communism, starting the Romanian Revolution which toppled Ceaușescu’s regime.

city of flowers and parks comes from the large number of parks and cycle routes in the city, but particularly for the prestige that the city won since the nineteenth century, as many flower growers especially roses, famous throughout Europe, used to live here. With its rich history,

Timisoara also called the Little Vienna is the third largest city in Romania. Its reputation as the

LITTLE VIENNA

The capital of the Banat region was also the second European city, and first in Romania, to introduce horse-drawn trams in 1869.

In 1884 Timișoara was the first mainland European city and just second in the world – after New York – to have electric public street lighting. After the city’s contract with the Viennese company that supplied it with the gas used for lighting ended, the city decided to take a shot on a new revolutionary public lighting system. On 12 November, 731 electric lamps were used to light the streets of Timișoara, paving the way for its bright future. The two lamps in front of the Huniade Castle, hosting the Banat Museum, are a reminder of just that.

ELECTRIFYING PAST

The city also has several museums hosted by some of Timișoara’s landmark buildings. The Art Museum, hosted by the Baroque Palace in the Unirii Square, the Banat Museum that occupies the Huniade Castle, and the open-air Museum of Banat Village are not to be missed. The Palace of the Serbian Episcopacy offers a surprisingly well curated collection of art and rare books. Plus, Timișoara also has an Opera, a Philarmonic, plenty of art galleries and hosts over 30 festivals every year.

The third most populous city in Romania, Timișoara has no less than four theatres, namely the Mihai Eminescu National Theatre, the German State Theatre, the Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre, and the Merlin Puppet Theatre.

LIVELY CULTURAL SCENE

Timișoara’s architecture is the first thing that stands out when it comes to the city’s rich cultural heritage with 14500 historical buildings. Standing tall at 80 meters, with its 11 towers, and seven bells, the Timișoara Metropolitan Cathedral is one of the most imposing buildings in the city. Its cupola is built in Moldavian style, while the side arches are in Byzantine style and the mosaic floors recreate motifs found in Banat style rugs. The City Hall and the Neuhaus Palace, designed by talented Hungarian-born architect Laszlo Szekely, add to the list of architectural landmarks of the city. The Catholic Dome is the most important Baroque monument in the Banat region. Its sumptuous interior features nine altars decorated in rococo style, made by Viennese painters and sculptors. Not least, Art Nouveau buildings are scattered all around the area of the former citadel. The Dicasterial Palace, hosting the Palace of Justice, is a copy of the Palazzo Medici in Florence.

STUNNING ARCHITECTURE

18th World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology Congress

The city’s old centre is full of cafés, restaurants and ice cream parlours catering to all tastes. The highlights of the Banat cuisine, such as pork specialties, Ciolan cu varză and Pulpă de porc la tavă or Mâncare de brozbeas well as plenty of deserts will provide you with a hearty meal after a day full of sightseeing.

Romanian cuisine is built around hearty, high calorie dishes designed to be the ultimate comfort food. With a strong focus on taste and quality of ingredients, it will win you over with its unfussy, unmistakably homemade feel.

THE FOOD IS MOUTH-WATERING

Romania is full of architectural treasures. In particular, Bucharest offers an unusual and sometimes uneasy mix of styles that combines the charming and almost organic shapes of 19th century architecture with the rigid lines of the Stalinist architecture.

THERE’S SOME SERIOUSLY STUNNING ARCHITECTURE

Romania has been inhabited since prehistoric times – the 34,950 year old human remains found in Caraș-Severin in 2002 are among the oldest ever found in Europe. In modern times, the country’s history was shaped by major ideologies and conflicts that swept through Europe, leaving behind a unique mix of collective experiences and values.

HISTORY IS EVERYWHERE

Romania is home to Scărișoara Glacier, Europe’s second biggest underground glacier, the Berca mud volcanoes, Bigăr waterfall, one of the most beautiful waterfalls on the continent, the living fires of Buzău and Turda salt mine, home to the only underground amusement park in the world.

NATURAL WONDERS ARE PAR FOR THE COURSE

There’s no better way to discover the Carpathian mountains than through hikes. Regardless of whether you choose a beginners’ walk on the saddle of the mountain or an advanced hike, you will enter a wild space so vast that you’ll see nature in a whole new light.

HIKING HERE IS A POINT OF PRIDE

Romania is one of the best places in Europe to go wildlife watching. Home to the largest population of brown bears in the EU, its forests are also a prime habitat for lynx, wolves, deer, chamois, badgers and more. The Danube Delta – the ultimate birdwatcher’s paradise – and the bison reservations are a must-visit for any wildlife lover.

THE WILDLIFE IS SPECTACULAR

Due to its varied landscape, Romania is the most biogeographically diverse country in the European Union. With snow-capped mountains, green hills covered in forests and vineyards, sandy Black Sea beaches and Europe’s largest and best preserved delta, Romania has something for everyone.

IT’S HOME TO BREATHTAKING NATURE

12 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT ROMANIA

18th World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology Congress

Romanian folk culture has experienced a revival in recent years and is constantly being rediscovered and reinterpreted by local designers and craftsmen. In particular, the traditional Romanian blouse , ‘ia’, is worn by women of all ages and celebrated via an annual festival organised by a local NGO.

FOLK CULTURE IS STILL GOING STRONG

In Romania, legends and customs are still alive and occupy a significant part of Romanians’ lives, particularly around religious feasts. Nearly everyone will receive caroller at Christmas, paint eggs red and knock them on Easter and smear their door and window sills with garlic on St. Andrew to keep the evil spirits at bay.

LEGENDS AND CUSTOMS ARE PART OF EVERYDAY LIFE

Romania is home to no less than eight World Heritage Sites just waiting to be explored: the painted churches of Moldavia, the Dacian fortresses of the Orăştie Mountains, the historic centre of Sighișoara, the Danube Delta, the Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and other regions of Europe (shared), the Monastery of Horezu, the Villages with fortified churches in Transylvania and the Wooden Churches of Maramureș.

THE WORLD HERITAGE SITES ARE AWE-INSPIRING

Festivals are the liveliest and most exciting side of Romanian culture. From local festivals that gather the whole village in celebration of a local flower or fruit, to electronic music and music festivals and week-long classical music celebrations, Romania will surprise you with the variety of its culture.
