ON/OFF founded 2012 in Germany ON/OFF is a network of designers, architects and makers based in Berlin. Since 2012 we have been working on a range of competitions, installation designs and on-site building projects, exploring diferent fields such as media art, theatre scenography, experimental housing, playgrounds and furniture design. As a network we draw on a range of different skills, working collaboratively to initiate new experiments combining diferent mediums and skills through mobile structures, film and projection, public workshops and writing. As a group we set out to challenge classic modes of practice and to engage with people’s experience of the city through projects in public space. Members of onoff are based in different cities and come together in new formations based on each project.

Until today Kopf Kino has already been exhibited during the Design Biennal in Istanbul, Art Spin Berlin, the Venice Design Biennale, the Wired Festival in Milano and has furthermore rolled through the cities of Sarajevo, Birmingham, Berlin, Frankfurt and Mannheim.

Kopf Kino In the beginning of our journey as ONOFF we made a series of experimental excursions through our city, Berlin. During these journeys we were wondering how to activate the potentials of our urban setting; the blank facades, the busy streets, the characters that comprise what we understand as our city.
Finding ourselves with limited resources, we turned to improvised, spontaneous methods of fabricating the object. We used a shopping trolley as the main body of the work, and then filled as seemed best all the components necessary for the projection. Borrowed car batteries, projector and laptop, fixed in place with cable ties, and recycled wood, the new era of the amateur professionals is personified! The Kopf Kino amplifies live actions with a camera and projects this action enlarged onto the surrounding facades. Curious passersby begin to see the power of this object and spontaneously interact with it. Suddenly they are empowered by their discovery and able to mediate their role in the production of urban space through the object. Layering actions and life of the street back onto the structures which form it, has the effect of suspending the reality of the space. For each participant its actions represent just a moment, a question to think about or an idea to consider.

The homely and mountainhut-like interior of the Rhombi House contrasts with its shielding and metallic outside appearance. All materials, besides metal connectors, are reused. The wood came from old stage designs, beams from a medieval cottage in the alps, the windows from a demolition site in Berlin and the cladding was sponsored by a packaging company.

How do we a create an effortable home for everyone in a city with the top-ten-rents of Europe? What would happen, if everyone leaves their homes and builds booths at the most unlikely places in the city Let‘s give the future a home in public space!
Rhombi House is built for today‘s life communities, which are no longer only made up of father, mother, child and dog. It serves as a training ground for new living constellations and questions with whom and how we want to live in the future.
In the framework of „Shabby Shabby Apartments“ the Münchner Kammerspiele, the architecture collective raumlaborberlin and the TV channel Arte invited us among others to build the apartment of the future for only 250Euro in 8 days.
While the Rhombicuboctahedron creates a generous common space in the center that invites to cook, work and dwell together the 3 extruded boxes shape retreats which can be seperated by curtains to the community space but still allow a wide view into it‘s surroundings. The small footprint minimizes the environmental impact on site. Therefor Rhombi House can be set up on the smallest plots while worms and squirrels will still roam freely. The platonic shape simplified the building process and allows Rhombi House to be easily disassembled, transported and errected at any other place. It remained in Munich for 2 month and is now looking for a renaissance as a holiday house in the outskirts of Berlin.

Conference Call We initiated a series of Conference Calls (CC), to investigate the recent proliferation of architecture collectives worldwide and to question our politics and our precarious working environment. Whether as a response to economic crisis or a more radical desire for alternatives, many in creative fields have eschewed 9-to-5 office work in favour of more collaborative working environments.

All of the interviewed groups are working on public space initiatives, and tend to have members scattered across the globe. They are often without a fixed headquarters and, at least in theory, horizontally organized. Our Conference Calls replicate the modes of communication most often used by contemporary collectives, by broadcasting a typical Google Hangout meeting live to YouTube. The 80’s corporate tone of the series’ title points to an inherent irony, underpinned by a dangerous potential. The parallels between this world of adhoc design and participatory actions, and the traditional office environment are ostensibly few, yet the precarious nature of work in all sectors has led to a confusing intermixture of work and non-work, blurring the lines between so-called ‘collaborative’ projects and exploitative pseudo-jobs. By questioning the nature of collective practices, the Conference Calls seek to expose what it is that drives – or, indeed, repels – young artists, architects and designers today.

Domesticity Workshop Is public space a real living space or is are we just subject to the flows of circulation, events and consuming? In the Autumn of 2015 we led a 5 day workshop at the Faculty of Architecture in Bratislava. The aim of the workshop was to reflect on the theme of domesticity in public space by turning day-today objects into hybrids, so called „street animals“ through a design – build – deploy methodology.
It was important to question and examine the way we interact, or in most cases retract, from domesticating public space, introducing play and gathering as possible antidotes. Through the discussion with the students we also introduced the theme of fire as the oldest way to bring people together – by providing warmth and light. We built 4 objects. + 1 A large frame on wheels evoking the idea of „home“ as a window towards and into the world. 2 A dating/pingpong table enabling love and games. 3 A mobile fire place providing comfort and remembering fire as a symbol of gathering and sharing. 4 A small kiosk/bar to provide food and drinks The final day we made a small street action, moving the objects as a small parade and placing them in different settings and engaging with passers by to create temporary „living rooms“ in crossings and squares.

undsätzliches Ziel dieses den Gesamtprozess begleitenden Bausteins ar es, einen konstruktiven Dialog aller am Prozess beteiligter Akteurinnen d Akteure zu gewährleisten und eine konfliktarme Einbindung der Erbnisse der aufsuchenden Beteiligung in den Gesamtprozess zu ermöglien. Hierbei wurde der Schwerpunkt darauf gelegt, in der Gruppe der ochaktiven Vertrauen gegenüber dem aufsuchenden Beteiligungsverfahn und dessen Ergebnissen zu schaffen. Im Weiteren ging es darum, die tglieder des Teams von THF+ hinsichtlich konfliktsensibler Elemente des rfahrens zu beraten. Die Erkenntnisse aus den Gesprächen mit den Hochtiven wurden während des gesamten Verfahrens mit THF+ rückgekoplt und flossen so in die Detailplanung der aufsuchenden Beteiligung ein. uf diese Weise konnte gewährleistet werden, dass es eine grundsätzliche zeptanz sowohl gegenüber den Prozessen der aufsuchenden Beteiling als auch deren Ergebnisse gab.

In the urban context the abstraction sets a clear, artificial sign, but it doesn‘t push itself in the foreground. On the contrary especially in the open state it blends with the horizon. In this way it offers itself to a large number of actors as an experimental room without imposing rules or limits onto them. This is the freedom we want and want to preserve for the Tempelhofer field and to preserve it through our project.

THF+ Pioneer Projects Our participation in the large-scale project THF + pursued the vision of creating a platform for futureoriented discussions around the high-spirited and much-discussed Tempelhofer Freiheit.  We designed and implemented a mobile pavilion, the T-house, with which alternative uses on the former airfield were to be tested. During the first workshop phase this satellite station served as a social hub, workshop, tearoom, cinema, stage, information point and as a venue for surveys around the Tempelhofer Field. While the serving of fresh tea to the participants underlined the friendly and communicative atmosphere of the teahouse, the DIY workshop subtly questioned the quality of the infrastructure of the field and its usefulness  The architectonic design of the teahouse enables the simultaneity of these different privacies on the one hand and the metamorphosis of the compact, mobile object to an open plateau with a covered exterior space on the other hand. In closed mode the house presents itself in the strong form of an extruded triangle, which is rolled like an exclamation mark through the public space. Arrived at the location the rigid form unfolds into a translucent roof that describes a more private area just by its light shadow throw.

During this experiment we have realized that if the field is a place for the public and thus a sign for the creativity, spontaneity and activity of Berlin, the city needs to be able to offer its users, initiatives and fighters place for their dreams. Die Bibliothek der Dinge Bilbiothek der Dinge – Library of Things is a mobile storage system designed to house all the tools, objects and toys owned by the Goethe Institut in Bratislava, Slovakia. Following their commitment to further open up the institute to the surrounding neighbourhood and become more active in the local “sharing economy”, they decided to create a sharing platform to rent out their objects free of charge. Just like a library, anyone can go through the catalogue, both online and in print, and borrow whatever object they need. We began by making an inventory of all the objects and divided them into 3 main groups: Experiment, Outdoor and Workshop. Therefor our concept was to create 3 mobile shelves, hinged together, that could create different spatial configurations in various parts of the institute. This would also allow to move the shelves to the street for more public street events. The 3 shelves then packed in together can be completely closed to secure the objects when the library is closed.

Hardbakka “Commons” The HARDBAKKA RUINS PROJECT is a site-specific art workshop that started in 2013 and took place around the ruins of Hardbakka, close to the Svartediket in Bergen, Norway. The project consists of a workshop and an exhibition, inviting artists, architects, and students interested in creating a work that relates to the site.
physical labour with conversation and debate around the topic of the Commons. The Commons can be described as a space that is neither privately-owned nor public in the sense of being maintained by the state. This is what is known as the ‘urban commons’ – which many groups worldwide are trying to build in the face of economic crisis and austerity measures. The Commons is also about social relations and the way we see ourselves as a part of a global society -one based on difference rather than identity or commonality.
ONOFF participated in the 2015 workshop themed „The Commons“. The 2013 and 2014 editions ran during June/July with around ten international participants. In 2015, we relocated to the urban periphery of Møhlenpris,Bergen. The exhibition that resulted from the week of working together had an unexpected congruity. On a political and theoretical level, we supplemented our
The ‚Commons‘ is a multi-faceted term that is understood differently in different contexts: this makes it a fruitful starting point for a workshop and exhibition. While the curator (Alison Hugill) reads the theoretical understanding of the term from Italian AutonomistMarxists Antonio Negri and Silvia Federici, design collective ONOFF have a more hands-on understanding of the commons as it relates to urban questions. Additionally, with the site in Bergen, Norway, the concept of ‚statsallmenning‘ offers yet another perspective: referring to shared public resources owned by the state. This threefold understanding of the Commons was discussed and worked on throughout the workshop, as we tackle the possibility of a ‚third-way‘ between private and public (state owned) space.

BOULEvard on the streets
BOULEvard Playing in the city means playing in a place ruled by limitations and borders caused by infrastructure and ist users. Day to day traffic and circulation shrinks safe & playable space for children to a minimum. For the 2014 Kanal Playground festival in Brussels ONOFF were asked to consider this issue. We responded with the BOULEvard, a large mobile playground which rolls its way through the streets and squares of the city. The BOULEvard allows kids to carve a new joyful path through their urban environment, because this mobile play-area crosses typical stops like roads and no-play zones and so claims space back for a temporary takeover of everyday space for action. But BOULEvard ball has a split personality. On the one hand it looks like a fascinating object, intriguing both as an object or as overgrown street furniture with an instruction manual. But on the other hand it has a distinct mission in the city, the BOULEvard is part of an urban strategy: testing the urban scope! This split is exciting. Connecting the micro - a strange object built with collective energy - to the macro - a
city, where we act out our everyday - is a powerful experiment. DoItYourself is not limited to furniture scale – it can conquer and disrupt an entire city, when it’s thought, shared and experienced collectivly. The BOULEvard is based on a tensegrity structure, using large plastic tubing as the core struts and high tension rope as the method of connection. Therefore the structure is robust, flexible, sustainable and safe - making it perfect for rolling through the city. Furthermore it is easy to assemble and can be bundled compactly, which allows us to ship to cities all over the world, so that every child can experience how to overcome the thresholds and barriers put in place for cars and bikes by rolling over them and recapturing the city as a giant playground!

Built up in all public places and equipped with an instruction manual, the machine “Potli Pockets“ turns shirts into bags in less than ten minutes.Hands On Dessau enters dark places and projects the not so prestigious motives of the city. The original geometries of Moving Eder will allow movement in different ways and make it tangible: rolling, casting and fly. The cushion filled Power Plush Pool is a public toy that aims to bring together people of all ages and backgrounds.

Bauhaus Summercamp In the spirit of the annual theme, “Movement”, in the Bauhaus summer school 2016 we offered a workshop dealing with Co-Machines - moving objects in the urban scope. The workshop invited young participants to develop their own action-machine, analysis and experience to solve situations of everyday life and help to re-shape the city. Together we built “Co-machines” - small interventions that are carried by curiosity and desire and serve as a tool to explore the city and to interact with it.
Our contribution besides teaching was to collect, document and spread the students ideas, interventions, instructions through a zine. Therefor we built The Guerilla Press - a machine designed to collect all the ideas from this workshop and make copies for all the visitors to the exhibition. It consists of 4 modules. Compactly arranged they can easily be rolled to a project site when needed. For printing it can be unfolded into it’s components to create a publishing house on wheels. The Guerilla Press is made from steel and holds a Riso Copy-Printer as it’s engine which uses DIY ideas as fuel.
Since 2009 the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation arranges annual international summer schools in Dessau for international students of architecture, arts, design, urban planning and cultural sciences, who are interested to work in design, art and craftsmanship. The Great Escape We are living troubled times in Europe. The economic crisis has been followed by a severe refugee crisis which has led to the questioning of the whole european project. Following this, some very worrying narratives have re-surfaced concerning nations, borders and the co-existence of diferent cultures. But the question is not wether we will live together through our diferences but how.

The Great Escape is a „nomadic entertainment facility“ that temporarily injects a metropolitan dynamic in small towns through an array of events fusing culinary experiments, diy building, alcoholic adventures, and multimedia expressions. The facility wishes to serve as a vessel of exchange between the metropolitan wanderers and the local folk promoting a space of sharing of cultures and knowledges.

The Great Ecape will travel the island from town to town, temporarily occupying public space and quickly deploying a set of activities and spaces for social engagement throughout the day and night. BABEL When people get together, it often results in language confusion. How can we live in a heterogeneous society and still feel connected with one another? Is there such a thing as productive misunderstandings? What are body and sound language able to express? Can communication break down entirely – and, if so, is that necessarily a bad thing?

BABEL - a 7 days festival taking place at the Marienfriedhof Cemetery in Hildesheim - invited us to create a spacial framework for this unique research lab of understanding and common action. Other than spreading the activities such as talks, concerts, dinners, presentations, performances,cinema nights or workshops throughout different spots inside the park we decided to concentrate them inside one festival center. By arranging these tasks around one void we generate a modern interpretation of the Agora. The twin function of this Agora as a political and commercial space allows visitors and artisits to either actively or passively participte in all the interventions happening during the festival simultanously.

CITY LEAKS COLOGNE Under the motto „Space for all - a stage for all“, the CityLeaks Urban Art Festival 2017 summarizes the concept of Placement Ebertplatz and invites you to change shape of the transformation of Ebertplatz. The structures of a city are always physical, historical, cultural and, above all, fictional. Everything has been created with an idea, a utopia to which. Today it seems as if the participatory is more important than ever. The erosion of democratic structures, the corporate lobbying of the corporations, the and the socializing of the maturity of the maturity, the end of our powerlessness his tightrope is still reasonably stable in the air. One of the many possible formulas for the future would be: More responsibility through more cooperative and initiative. How this works is demonstrated by the Berlin artist collective ON / OFF, a network of architects, designers, curators and other „urbanists“. Their temporary, installation-like constructions formed the foundation of the CityLeaks 2017 Festival Center, which recorded the Ebertplatz. Everyone invited to participate in the festival, the festival center and the city.

CO-MACHINES BOOK ‘Co-machines: Mobile Disruptive Architecture’ takes as its premise the recent tendency among architects and designers to opt out of traditional office work in favour of creating self-initiated interventions in public space. This compendium investigates a new architectural movement motivated by practices of placemaking, occupying and squatting, and alternative economies. Ecological or technological in scope, all the interventions in the book are mobile and nearly all of them are performed without permission from city planners. Presenting a selection of international projects by emerging designers, ‘Co-machines: Mobile Disruptive Architecture’ investigates the interventions and the accompanying movement to question its methods, and its arguments against the established procedures of urban planning and city-building. The visual language of the book, inspired by DIY risograph printing, is complemented by a series of thoughtful essays by architects, educators and critics working on the topic.
