SUMMER HOUSE

combination of concrete and traditional materials

Location Year Status Team

Lesvos, Greece August - October 2020 Archaeological Department Chiras Technical Office

The Rock House is located on the Greek island of Lesvos, designed for a private client. The plot is on a steep slope and the ground is extremely rocky. It is designed as a summer house for a family of four and with extra individual rooms for summer guests. Located just some meters away from the coastline, and thanks to the inclination of the ground, the view is breathtaking. The design is following the Greek traditional architecture, which consists of many exterior connections and open-space design, inside and outside, leaving space for the aegean sea to enter the house.

CAPE VANI IN MILOS

steel structure with corten cladding, stone and brick walls

This diploma thesis aims to approach the main problem of overtourism that concerns the greek islands. We focus on the island of Milos, which is famous for its mining activity and its rich geological history. Our goal is to introduce a new way of tourism, which includes the connection and the appreciation of nature. We focused on the geo-routes of the west part of the island and in continuation we chose one that ends up in cape Vani, an old manganese mine. The mine still contains of mining galleries and mining facility ruins. The review of the operation of the mining process, aims to identify the ‘reading tools’ of the peculiar landscape and the the mining steps, in order to use them in the design process.

The idea of the proposal is to organize a main route, through which the visitor can cross inside the old mine‘s structure, from the beginning of the mine, passing through the mining arcades and ending up close to the sea.

9

10

MASTERPLAN The route is designed to pass through the descent into the three existing levels of arcades, which end up in the formation of a ‘square’. The ‘square’ brings together all the public uses, such as a thermal spa, a refreshment bar and a small museum as an extension of the main Mining Museum. In order to endorse further more the connection between the visitor and the landscape, we propose an alternative way of accommodation. The approach of housing is designed under terms of mining, through the tools of drilling, steep climbs, openings etc. In addition, the stay of visitors in the mine is a memorial of the old miners’ stay. The proposal intends to shape a unity that includes, in the same time, habitation and old mining activity.

11

12

Focusing on the square, we have a steel structure which is anchored to the rock and houses all the common uses. Interruption of the metal roof intensifies the continuation of the route, which continues with steel frames that accompany the visitor outside of the gallery. The steel frames that protected you inside the galleries, now form an arcade on the outside and through dilutions and condensations frame the sea. There is a gradual deconstruction of the arcade until it reaches the sea. An important issue to face, was the stone building and how it will blend into the landscape through design. Thus, the grid which organizes the square has emerged from the dimensions of the stone building.

03 CABIN

MODULES BY iR ARQUITECTURA

During the ninth annual Hello Wood Festival in Hungary under the theme of ‘Cabin Fever’, students from around the world collaborated to build seven contemporary cabin prototypes. The international festival is organized to offer architecture and design students the chance to gain practical experience to supplement the abstract, overwhelmingly theoretical classes they have at the university. Under the notion that a house is defined by the various needs of its users, this cabin prototype was built using separate portable modules. The Cabin modules scheme is composed of separate portable elements, each designed for a different purpose, such as a kitchen, bedroom, communal area, or storage. The scheme is powered by solar energy for cooking, while a Trombe wall absorbs and stores heat from the sunlight and feeds it via air vents to the living area. The communal area is covered by a transparent polycarbonate roof, under which plants can be grown. The project was led by Fermin Indavere and Tommaso Polli from argentina-based studio called iR arquitectura and with the collaboration of 12 students.

04 ATHENIO

DANCE SCHOOL

concrete and steel construction with metal details

Athenio is located in the heart of Athens, in the area of Keramikos. Keramikos is a historical area which hosts numerous of ancient sculptures erected along the road of Piraeus. Due to the topography of the area, it is possible to enjoy the view of Acropolis from the top floor of the upcoming building. At the same time, the plot is surrounded by the archaeological site and park of Keramikos. After all the analysis, the main idea of the project is to enhance the connection between the park and the building. In order to achieve our goal, we designed a curved and inclined platform facing the park, which gives the impression that the park continues into the building and welcomes the visitors. By elevating the ground we also create space for a theater underneath. To endorse even more this connection with the park, we placed on the ground floor all the public and social spaces, which are open to the public. Lastly, the above long volume concludes the design, by hosting all the needed rooms for the operation of the Dance School, like offices, classrooms and dance rooms.

05 OPEN

CITY MUSEUM/ OBSERVATORY

steel structure with glass cladding

The idea of this project arose from the fact that Elefsina is the European Capital of Culture of 2021. So, due to the numerous cultural events that are organized, the creation of a museum is scheduled. Elefsina is a combination of building fragments from different chronologies and architecture styles. A city with rich historical background and unique character. Combining all the abovementioned, the main idea of the proposal is to highlight and simultaneously bring together all the city’s fragments into a total. In order to achieve this goal, we chose to place the ‘Open City Museum’ on the top of the city’s hill.

Elefsina, Greece August - October 2020 Academic project M. Psychogiou, S. Frousiou

The Observatory is made of a steel horizontal structure with steel vertical extentions covered with glass panels. The modules are oriented to views that are important parts of the city’s history(city’s fragments). The whole idea is based on the greek mythology about the goddess of Demeter and the abduction of her daughter. At the same time, the book ‘Invisible Cities’ from Italo Calvino was really valuable in understanding how to approach an ‘invisible city’ under the existing one.

27

28

By designing this open space museum, we opt to give the opportunity to visitors to experience the city of Elefsina in two different ways and to help them understand all the historic layers beneath the fragments.

06 FAMILY

HOUSE

concrete onstruction with steel details

The plot is located in the city center of Athens, in one of the oldest districts. In order to respect the peculiar cityscape, we opt to create clear and minimal volumes with big openings which allow the view to the city. The main idea is to divide the plot into two zones, southwest and northeast. On the southwest side we place most of the open-air spaces for all the outdoor activities and on the northeast the main building. The house consists of three floors, each of them has its own open-air area. The main courtyard though is placed on the ground floor, surrounded by the living room, the kitchen and the main entrance. On the ground floor there are placed the living room, the dining room and the kitchen, which is separated from the rest. The three floors communicate with an internal staircase.

VIA DEI BOSCHI

concrete structure with wood cluding facade and plywood interior design

This project is located in the countryside of Bologna, in Italy and it is designed for a young couple. . The house consists of two floors. On the groundfloor is placed the kitchen with the living scape and a small office. The staircase is concealed by a built-in bookshelf and a fireplace. On the second floor is placed the master bedroom with a walk-in closet. . One fully equipped bathroom and two extra rooms for future kids, which are currently working as a guest room and a second office. The triangle design creates a clear separation of two yards, , one social and one more private which is connected with the living room. Both the living space and the master bedroom enjoy the full-size view of the valley which opens in front of the triangle.
