Radiolarian Carbon Fiber String Lamp Shade
The lamp shade was conceived through an algorithmic process that generates modules organized around a nucleus of light. The geometry was inspired by natural forms, and the base shape became a dodecahedron for practical and aesthetic purposes. The outward extrusion of each module is programmed according to the surface area of its derivative panel, resulting in 4 different modules that give the lamp a tapering appearance. The final conglomerate was wrapped together with string to stabilize the form through constant inward compression, mirroring the outward expulsion of light that it controls.

To have a minimal impact on the landscape of the site, the entire structure comes down on only 4 modules with elongated downward extrusions to be driven into the ground for anchorage. The form then mushrooms up and out in order to cantilever over myrtle bushes, waiting to embrace their growth.

FUSE Submission for a Public Installation Competition
Town of Pafos, Cyprus
In the heart of the town lies a neglected public garden space that the Town of Pafos created an open-call competition for in order to solicit designs for installations that would help draw people in and reactivate the space. Pafos has intriguing Greek mythological connections that were the foundational inspiration of this project’s design. It’s fabled that Aphrodite herself, the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility, was birthed offshore and rose from the sea to the shores of Pafos. During her ascension, the Greek Myrtle, a fragrant local shrub, wrapped her to hide her nudity and was heavily symbolic throught ger life. Aphrodite later became the first wife of Hephaestos, the god of blacksmiths, metallurgy, and sculptures. Analogous to the marriage of these gods, this project seeks to bring the two seemingly opposing things that they both represent together into harmony. After doing some research on the local industry in Pafos, an aluminum manufacturer was identified that would be convenient for the production of the installation. For these reasons, aluminum was chosen as the main material and the Greek Myrtle as the main plant to create a connection to Pafos’ industry, botany, and mythology.
Myrtus communis (Greek Myrtle) a local evergreen shrub; is best grown in sandy, well draining soil like that of the Municipal Garden; can grow up to 1.5m in height over 3 years with partial to full sun and has many tolerances; white, fragrant flowers bloom in early Summer, creating an aromatic lure; Sacred to Aphrodite who was born from the seafoam off Pafos
nourish mist irrigates the Greek Myrtle shrubs; also dematerializes the aluminum lattice and abstracts it with the white myrtle flowers

Two of the key factors that nature uses to generate forms are efficiency and economy in regards to the use of resources. With this in mind, we designed a module that can be easily and cheaply manufactured and assembled. Although forming the modules is a very rigid and technological process, what the modules are able to form can be very organic and sculptural. Because of this, the project does not necessarily have a defined form and is allowed to flex depending on the cost of the manufacturing process.
