MATERIAL STRATEGY THE MATERIAL AT THIS PART OF THE SITE WILL EMPHASISE A HIGH QUALITY DESIGN AS IT AT THE CORE OF THIS NEW DEVELOPMENT AND WILL BE A HUB OF ACTIVITY. THE STRONG GEOMETRY OF THE DESIGN OF THE SPACE SHOULD BE REFLECTED BY USING CLEAN LINES AND EDGES AND LARGE BLOCKS OF MATERIAL; RESULTING IN A STRONG MATERIAL CONNECTION. THE MATERIALS CHOSEN SHOULD REFLECT THE HISTORY AND VERNACULAR DESIGN OF THE NEARBY VICTORIA QUAYS AND STATION- THEY SHOULD BE MUTED AND ACT AS A BACKDROP FOR THE VIVID AND TEXTURAL PLANTING SCHEME; THE SMOOTH, CLEAN MATERIAL PALETTE WILL CONTRAST WITH THE WILDER PLANTING SCHEME,

RECLAIMED RAILNAY SLEEPERS - USING RECLAIMED SLEEPERS WILL HELP TO LINK THE SITE TO THE VICTORIA QUAYS AND RAILWAY; EXCHANGING PARTS OF THE OLD HISTORY INTO THE NEW CHARACTER OF THE EXCHANGE. IT WILL ALSO ENSURE THAT THE NEW DEVELOPMENT DOES NOT FEEL 'TOO STERILE' AND GIVES A SLIGHTLY SOFTER FEEL IN THE HARD LANDSCAPING.

TERRAZO PAVING - WHITE

SLOT DRAINS

~ . ---~-~~

~ METAL (RAILWAY) TRACK

~

WOODEN DECKING

CONSERVATION PAVING - WILL BE USED FOR THE EDGING WHERE THE RAILINGS ARE AND FOR THE PAVING ON THE STEPS. THE COLOUR IS SILVER GREY SO THAT IT HARMONISES WITH THE WHITE AND GREY CHOSEN FOR THE TERRAZZO. TERRAZZO PAVING - THIS HAS BEEN CHOSEN TO GIVE A SMOOTH QUALITY OF FINISH TO LARGE AREAS; AND KEEP DETAILING AT THE EDGES TO A MINIMUM. IT ALSO WORKS WELL ON THE TOP LEVEL AS THE TRACKS AND DRAINS CREATE DIFFICULT ANGLE WHICH WOULD RESULT IN A POOR FINISH IF USING PAVING. THE DARKER TERRAZZO WILL BE USED FOR DETAILING AT THRESHOLDS SUCH AT THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE STAIRS AND TO SIGNIFY THE CHANGE FROM PUBLIC TO SEMI-PRIVATE OUTSIDE THE BARS AND RESTAURANTS. RUSTED STEEL CLADDING - THIS WILL BE USED ON THE SIDES OF THE WALLS IN THE TIERED PLANTING BEDS. OVER TIME IT WILL CHANGE WITH THE SOFT LANDSCAPE AND IT WILL CONTRAST WITH THE SOFT GRASSES IN THE TIERED STEPS. WOODEN BOARDS -USED FOR THE RAILINGS, STAIR RAIL AND BENCH SURFACE, ERS BUT A MORE MODERN UPDATED TAKE,

LINK TO THE WOODEN SLEEP-

STEEL TRACKS - LINK TO THE VERNACULAR OF THE RAILWAY AND CREATE A DETAILED PATTERN IN THE SURFACE OF THE TOP LEVEL. THE STEEL TRACKS IN THE SLEEPER SIDES ON THE WATER CHANNEL WILL RUST OVER TIME AND CONTRAST WITH THE DARK OF THE WOOD. SLOT DRAINS - ARE SMALLER AND LESS NOTICEABLE THAT OTHER DRAINS AND WILL RUN ALONG THE LENGTH OF THE STAIRS AS PART OF THE DESIGN DETAIL SO THAT THEY BLEND WITH THE SURFACING.

DRAINS MEET THE WATER CHANNEL

1

INSPIRATION FOR THE WATER CHANNELS - STRONG AND DEFINED EDGES

·~ · ··

IN! TIALLV THE DRAINS RAN TO THE EDGES AND SIMPLY FINISHED AND THE WATER RAN DOWN THE WALLS INTO THE CHANNEL. THIS WOULD LOOK MESSY ON THE SURFACE LEVEL AND WOULD CAUSE THE WALLS TO BE GREEN AND SLIMY AS WATER WOULD NOT ALWAYS BE FLOWING.

3

IN DIAGRAM 2 THE SLOT DRAIN STOPS BEFORE THE EDGE AND CONTINUES UNDERNEATH - THE WATER THEN FLOWS ALONG A RUSTEN STEEL PLATE OUT INTO THE CHANNEL. IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO ATTACH THE PLATE AT THIS POINT; DIAGRAM 3 SHOWS HOW IT HAS CHANGED BY MOVING DOWN. DIAGRAM 4 SHOWS HOW THE STEEL PLATES WILL STICK OUT AND THE WATER THEN RUNS OFF THEM INTO THE CHANNEL.

STRUCTURED WITH STRONG GEOMETRY AND

ROBSON SQUARE

CARDIFF BAY

I LIKED THE CHANGES IN LEVEL AND THEIR STRONG GEOMETRY. ALSO LIKE THE COMBINATION OF THE STAIRS AND THE RAMP ALTHOUGH THIS PROVED DIFFICULT TO IMPLEMENT INTO MY DESIGN DUE TO THE SMALL INCREMENTS IN LEVEL CHANGE. INSTEAD I USED THE RAMP AND STAIRS PARALLEL WITH THE SLOPE MEETING THE TOP OF EACH STEP BUT NOT COMING ABOVE IT. ENCOMPASSED THE STRONG LEVEL CHANGES AND THE SUNKEN PLANTING AREA EMPHASISES THE CHANGES IN HEIGHT OF THE _EVELS.

CARDIFF BAY HAS A VERY STRONG MATERIAL PALETTE WITH VERY STRONG STRUCTURAL AND MATERIAL ELEMENTS. THE BAY USES HIGH QUALITY MATERIALS AND HAS A MUTED COLOUR PALETTE WHICH I WOULD LIKE TO ACHIVE IN MY DES I GN. THE MAJ 0 R IT Y 0 F THE PALETTE I S SLATE OF VARIOUS SHADES AND MUTED PAVING. THIS ALLOWS THE COPPER USED FOR THEATRE TO STAND OUT AND CONTRAST WITH IT; THE SLATE IS SIMPLY A BACKDROP. I WOULD LIKE TO IMPLEMENT THIS INTO MY DESIGN BY USING A GREY AND MUTED COLOUR SCHEME FOR THE MAJORITY OF MY HARD SURFACES. THEN ALSO USING RUSTED STEEL CLADDING AND TRACKS WHICH WILL RUST OVER TIME; THIS WILL CREATE A CHANGING LANDSCAPE.
