This section shows the semi-private space which acts as a permeable barrier to set the semi-detached houses back from the busier public arena. The planting and large boulders create an informal and naturalistic setting which would be fun to play in. The paving infront of the house appears more formal and so sets it apart from the semi-public space.

This section is from the cresent along Brincliffe Gardens. This space has a different feel to the rest of the site and has larger detached dwellings which are set back from the road. The low wall provides a private space at the front of the house whilst also allowing it to be in full view. This is to try and create a more active space at the front. The houses begin 3m back from the walkway as this is seen as a distance which will promote a feeling of safety from those walking through. Grassy planting is used as a visual barrier to hide the parking from the surrounding resident.

This shows the relationship between the School and Townhouses opposite; the pleached hornbeams provide a visual barrier whithout creating a dark space. This gives both dwellings more privacy. The 'claimable space' in front of the townhouses provides a threshold between the public and private . This streetscape will be a busy route through the site as it link the two halves, it is a flexible space and could be adapted and used for communal functions. It would be a safe place to play as it has natural surveillance and cars are not permitted .

This shows the other side of the cresent; the same setting of the private patio with the low wall. This time a gently sloping bank hides the road and paved area from the view of those walking through and also offers the residents more privacy .
I
This section cuts through the central public space at the top of the site. It shows the variety in spaces: flat grass, meadows, naturalistic planting, grassy slopes and open paved areas. This shows the flexibility of the space as it could be used for a wide variety of activities and recreational uses. This space has excellent natural surveillance and so would be safe andrespected. The pleached horn beams to the right offer privacy as does the grassy bank to the left. The townhouses have an area of 'claimable space' directly in front to be used if they wish to enhance the privacy and ownership of their property and the surrounding space .

Claim the Space- Psalter Lane Development- Supporting Images This shows the main pedestrian entrance to the site which will have striking stripes of plants in the style of Piet Oudolf. It will .create a gateway to the site. The photographs show Monnow Arts Centre which shows the planting ;tyle this site will adopt.
Additional Information COMMUNAL BINS For dwellings with over two bedrooms 240* litres of residual waste and 240 litres of recycling waste will
be allowed (per fortnight). The total volume of waste for the site will be 240L x 42 (no of dwellings) = 10 080L. This will require 10 11 OOL communal bins for both residual and recycling waste. Each bin has an area of 1.54 m2 and so the total area required is 30.8 m2. Just over 50m2 has been provided which allows for access.
REED BED SYSTEMS Reed bed filtration systems provide a 95-99& reduction in pollutants. Within this development three reed
beds have been provided, each at a cost of ÂŁ18000. 1.8 m2** is required per resident; averaging four people per dwelling this works out as 4 x 1.8 x 42 (no.
of dwellings)

302.4 m2. There is approx 400 m2 of grey water filtration provided within this plan which
is more than adequate.
However there is only 200 m2 of sewage reed bed filtration provided so this will only be connected to the houses on the upper part of the site and the apartments in the Bluecoats School. It also must be situated 2m from a boundary and 15m from a dwelling, which has been complied with.
