FINAL MASTERS PROJECT VIA — SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS / 2011 / Project initiated by Ian Noble, Richard Whitbread Compiled by Egle Vesk Via intends to create portraits of power structures to communicate different point of views about imbalances of power and to show connection between social consciousness and social inequality. With help of a dialogue, binary opposition, texts and images I decide to create visual essay about the subject. My Final Masters Project should appeal to every viewer as a visual doubt which questions social situation and political choice and most importantly role of social consciousness. The project is an experiment of construction and deconstruction of meanings. This project does not deliver ready made solutions instead I apply ideas in opposition to rise questions and open discussions about the matter. My aim is to draw attention to our contribution into social structures, our preception of it and our relationship with it. I would like public to realize the importance of decision making and start dialoge about who’s representing needs of society.

BUILDING INTERDISCIPLINARY PRACTICE WHITEWASH / 2011 / Project initiated by Lawrence Zeegen Compiled by Egle Vesk, Roxana Bacian, Kerry Hyndman, Alex Dring Building Interdisciplinary Practice analyses the idea of selling an awareness. The aim of Building Interdisciplinary Practice project is to highlight the way big corporations whitewash over the negative aspects of their services, making the consumer think they are doing something positive for the world by buying their goods. We are looking into making our audience think twice before buying a product. Having looked at the ways companies use fear/guilt to sell their products, we plan to use this concept by taking green washing to the extreme. That means promoting negative products in a socially conscious and eco friendly manner. We chose products that had now become advertising taboos; either not being advertised or coming with serious health warnings.

Regarding the imagery we are using and the extreme way of illustrating our message, the tone of voice used is a serious one. However, the existence of our campaign should be absurd, so this adds a certain tongue in cheek humor. We wanted to tackle the health aspect, but rather than preaching about the negative effects of alcohol, we spun the approach to voice a positive outcome to the inevitable drawbacks to drinking. We physically created the alcohol poster, as we decided as a group that this was our strongest idea, both visually and thematically. Using alcohol bottle tops of various shapes, sizes and conditions, we created a collage in which the instantly recognisable medical cross emerged out of the image. We didn’t want to give too much away when reading the imagery, but suggest strong connotations of health and well being, createdout of imagery associated with binge drinking. We wanted to give the impression of a handmade, wholesome style, which can be found in other white/green wash campaigns. We did this by collecting our own material and a back-to-basics handmade approach, without relying too heavily on computer techniques. We originally created the campaign to be absurd and shocking, as it highlighted the extremes of this type of advertising, and the depths certain companies could go to exploit the market and make consumers choose their product over another. However, having completed the project, what we found surprising is that the advert could almost be believable; both in the simple but powerful visual message and the use of off setting negative consumer actions with positive repercussions.

HOME / 2011 / Project initiated by Vaughan Oliver, Richard Whitbread Compiled by Egle Vesk Home project communicates what home means to me. Creative challenge is to visualize home-being in very personal ways. I research subjects like dream house to homelessness to existentialism and I analyze my own moving addiction. I map my research for accommodation, surroundings that make me feel “at home and relationships. My aim is to connect visually and conceptually materialism, spiritualism, dialogism and create balance between these elements. I represent all three ideas on different layers using various sizes of pages for each group. I combine pages in a way that separate ideas can start to communicate to each other and construct double meanings.

BOOK SERIES H.G.WELLS / 2010 / Project initiated by D&AD Student Awards 2010 Compiled by Egle Vesk Book Series. My challenge was to choose from the titles listed in the mandatory requirements and to create hardback cover design that works as a set and establish the books as timeless fiction. All three chosen books by H.G.Wells are close studies of personality. As well about social order, urban misery, class struggles, personal liberty, modern slavery, moral relativism and relations between sexes. Cover image illustrates a character and the subject of each book and bonds the series together. Visualized part of a locomotive wheel portraits either class struggles as broken circle (Kipps), center of relationships as coupling rod (Love and Mr.Lewisham) or modern slavery as spokes (The History of Mr. Polly). Spoiled book covers reflect social critisism on subject, like changing values in society (Kipps), low versus high morality (Love and Mr.Lewisham) and diversity of meaning (The History of Mr. Polly). Purpose of the book jacket is to hide damaged parts of the cover to communication controversial aesthetic and raise questions about hidden and revealed stories. Fashion of lapels, fabrics and patterns give us sense of occasion and introduce identity of Edwardian gentleman.

THINK AGAIN! / 2006 / Assignment to think about every day. Why do we like do be praised?

COMMENT / 2008 / Project initiated by Indrek Sirkel Compiled by Egle Vesk Comment is a newspaper about the merge of old and new mediums and the ways they meet each other in odd circumstances to catch the eye of the readers. I am not much of an online comments reader myself but it seems to me that the comments there have a big influence over the articles as the phenomena itself eats the author and creates the new much polar understanding of certain stories. My work developed after reading an Estonian daily newspaper called Päevaleht’s online comments. It was then when I realized the importance of the comments, after that I decided to read all of them and make a selection and divided them into groups by character. I found theoretical similarities on my own thoughts and those of Roland Barthes in his essay called The Death Of The Author. I then altered the original newspaper articles and created a new version of it using my own chosen comments from the website where every page is represented into a certain stereotyped column.

PAVLOV’S DOGS SOCIAL POSTER / 2007 / Project initiated by Ivar Sakk Compiled by Egle Vesk Pavlov’s Dogs social poster series was developed during a 4 month class in which we used open conversations and lectures about relations between Russia and Estonia in both a political and social scene. I considered a political ideology as a product and divide the way a 4P plan is shown in marketing schemes — personnel, place, promotion, price. Every P was individually given one visual solution. When all these visual solutions came together it made the final design.

BALTI RAILWAY STATION INFOGRAPHIC FOR TRAINS / 2007 / Project initiated by Ivar Sakk Compiled by Egle Vesk Balti Railway Station. At the beginning of this assignment everybody had to choose one type of transport in Tallinn city, research it and then visit the places involved. The final brief was to promote our chosen transport and redesign the info graphic into a more justified and good format which could be taken with you whilst traveling. I chose to design a brochure for three different train companies that run from the same train station but have no common commercial output. I laid out the existing timetables and redesigned the rail scheme and maps.

CONVEY / 2008 / Project initiated by Mikk Heinsoo Compiled by Egle Vesk Convey is a project were the sound effects and the information they hold is transferred to a still image from a movie onto a spread sheet were an image represents a sound effect. The image next to it represents the real sound, how the effect is actually made. All thought the work is about sounds, it is just as an example to show how much information can be exploited by unknowing.

Ship Happens is a turnout of a short workshop given by two young graphic designers from Holland who have just finished a Typography MA course at the Werkplaats in Arnhem 2004. The starting point of this assignment was a short story called The Flying Enterprise (1952). The focus of the assignment lays more on the romantisation, the unsolved mysteries, the open ending and unanswered questions of a story rather than on the tragedy. T he end result became a book where all the students work was compiled together in it. My work named She is based on an original short-story with small changes in it. In my part I swopped the ship’s name with word she to let the story sound more like a love letter and I did an experiment with the goal of pushing the same content into new form solutions.

COLOR MAPS FOR SYNESTHESIA / 2007 / Project initiated by Matthias Kreutzer Compiled by Egle Vesk Color Maps For Synesthesia poster-serial is the outcome of a one month color workshop with a foreign tutor from Germany. Because of financial problems I had at this moment I knew that I would not be able to print out 3-5 colorful prints. I looked into subjects like color-blindness, animal eyesight and then I found a phenomena of synesthesia. Sometimes low budget one color print can create fine results.

Estonian Academy of Arts Journal NR.4 is compiled by second and third course students. The project aim is to introduce the graphic design as a discipline, the way it is seen by the students themselves. Every student’s work became very individual and not always straight forward about graphic design itself. It is about things that do matter beyond a graphic design like: source of inspiration, cultural awareness, communication, research, creativity and so on. LESS IS MORE / 2007 / Project initiated by Marko Karu Compiled by Egle Vesk
Less Is More was created during a short class of marketing. The assignment was to pay close attention to the ways we completed briefs in other classes. T he comic book is talking about the production process itself with a “Do it yourself” attitude. As I was inspired by my everyday life I decided to divide a diary-styled storyboard into chapters to make it more clear for the viewer. This work shows ironically how I found ideas and created a graphic design project out of it.

The Tallinn’ 91 Onwards newspaperwas created during a week-long workshop. There are certain elements in the newspapers that always have their own identity and form. We were asked to play around with typical graphic elements and re-use them in our design approach. At the end of the workshop The Tallinn’ 91 Onwards became a collection of newspaper covers. On my cover there is a story about the world greatest terrorist organization called society. They are active in Tallinn too. We Will Provide is performed by Egle Vesk and Remo Randver, text by Remo Randver and photo by Katri Kuusk.
