Commander Steps Up to the Plate By Rachel LaBud, 96 FSS Marketing

Maj. Jeremy Boeing took command of the 96th Force Support Squadron a few short months ago, but that hasn’t stopped him from implementing “grand” ideas. Boeing’s vision for FSS is all about providing “Grand Slam Support” to the Eglin community, but what exactly does that mean? “Grand Slam Support is a framework I use to help explain what we do in the FSS to our airmen and to our customers. When we take care of our airmen and our mission partners, their families, and the community, we take care of the mission here at Team Eglin. If a grand slam is the best hit in baseball, we’re hitting home runs for Team Eglin every single day here in the Force Support Squadron.” With over 700 people in the squadron, that’s no small feat. The Military and Civilian Personnel Sections, Airman & Family Readiness Center, Fitness Center, Lodging, Auto Hobby, Education Center, CDC, Outdoor Recreation (and many more!) all fall under the 96th Force Support Squadron.

“You can’t hit a home run if you don’t swing the bat.” Photo: Andrea Stachewicz, 96 FSS Marketing

Working with such a large group can have its challenges, but for Boeing, it’s all about the people.

“We’re excellent at what we do, but we can always improve,” says Boeing.

“The best part of my job is getting to work with outstanding Airmen, across the board. From our most junior teammates to our most senior, I have the privilege to serve with some of the best Airmen, and that’s military and civilians.”

Since he took command, Boeing has strived to find a balance between taking care of his FSS teammates and his family. He enjoys making time to coach his sons’ sports teams, and luckily, his colleagues have made that a little easier.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Michael, Boeing is proud of how the squadron and Team Eglin have rallied to support relief efforts.

“I have a great team that allows me to be able to do that,” says Boeing.

“One thing I wanted to highlight across our flights is the tremendous support we provided to Tyndall Air Force Base in light of Hurricane Michael. Team Eglin and Team FSS stepped up to the plate and delivered Grand Slam Support to help support Tyndall, and they continue to do that on a daily basis.” Boeing and his team have created a set of goals for 2019 designed to improve upon and rally around FSS’s culture. The squadron will be working hard to train and develop ready Airmen, create an environment for Airmen to thrive, provide proactive customer service, foster innovation, and modernize the squadron.

He’s a father to two boys, Carter and Landon. His wife, Air Force Maj. Katie Boeing is also stationed at Eglin Air Force Base, working in the Armament Directorate. He and his family are making the most of their assignment. “My boys love fun in the sun, they absolutely love going to the beach and spending time in the water, playing in the sand and… just enjoying the warmer weather.” A die-hard baseball fan, one of Boeing’s personal mottos is,“You can’t hit a home run if you don’t swing the bat.” His challenge for FSS — will you swing the bat, or will you strike out looking?

New TLFs Opening Soon By Rachel LaBud, 96 FSS Marketing

Eglin’s Lodging Team has been hard at work overseeing the design and construction of 32 new on-base Temporary Lodging Facilities (TLFs). The project has been several years in the making, with construction crews breaking ground in spring 2017. The new units are just off Eglin Blvd, behind Unity Park. Lodging General Manager Myron Webb says the central location will be a real benefit to incoming families. “They’re within walking distance from the shopping area, they’re within walking distance from the school on base, and the hospital is right down the street,” says Webb.“That’s a plus right there.” The new facilities include 10 pet-friendly units and 2 ADA compliant units. Each unit has 2 bedrooms; including a queen bed, two twin beds and a sleeper sofa, as well as an in-unit washer and dryer. Crews have been working to install new furniture and appliances to get the facilities ready for occupancy. Webb and his Assistant Lodging Manager Angela Carter hope to hold a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to officially open the TLFs by the end of January. Families with PCS orders will have the highest priority when booking TLFs, though others can book on a Space Available basis. RECREATION & LEISURE Reporter Joins Fitness

Center’s Newest Class: Operation Fit Camp

By Rachel LaBud, 96 FSS Marketing

I showed up to workout on a beautiful, sunny Tuesday. There were ten of us in the class — a mix of regulars and newcomers. My instructors for the day were SSgt Eric Hempen and SrA David Ebbing, two of the Fitness Center’s Level 1 Alpha Warrior Coaches. These free, bi-weekly circuit training classes are structured around the Alpha Warrior Battle Rig, located at the Pavilion behind the Field House.

CHILDREN & YOUTH

SPECIAL EVENTS & PROMOS

Hempen and Ebbing led us in a short dynamic warm up while they explained the day’s workout. We’d be working through 12 stations to complete a circuit. The class is a mix of body weight drills, strength training and cardio utilizing equipment like medicine balls, TRX suspension straps, kettlebells, and the Battle Rig. After a short lap around the baseball fields, it was time to get down to business! We split into groups of 3 to spread out between stations and complete the circuit. This made the class feel smaller and helped some of the newcomers (like myself) learn the ropes.

Each station was completed Tabata style - 40 seconds of work, followed by 20 seconds of rest. We completed the circuit twice with a short break in between. Each workout is different, but this one included medicine ball slams, pullups, tire flips, TRX push-ups, and box jumps. Hempen and Ebbing were enthusiastic instructors — they made sure

20

each move was performed safely and offered tips and modifications for all fitness levels. For Hempen, that’s the best part of leading the classes. “I like getting to know the people who come here, and seeing them progress,” he says. We finished the workout with a squat track; each time we heard a certain word in a song, we squatted. Frequent participant Heather Keels suggested the idea, something Hempen and Ebbing encourage participants to do. We ended the workout on a high, finishing with light stretching, basking in our post-workout glow. Overall, I loved the class! I felt stronger and leaner between the mix of strength training and cardio. That’s why many of the participants keep coming back. “I like the challenge and the calorie burn,” says Keels. Another participant, Darly Larrea, says she loves the feeling after an amazing workout. I really enjoyed the sense of accomplishment and community. There’s nothing like making new friends and pushing yourself as you work together to flip several hundred pound tires. I would highly recommend Operation Fit Camp - regardless of your fitness levels. It can easily be modified and it’s a great way to get stronger, meet new people and get outside. It was also a great experience to use the Alpha Warrior Battle Rig. Try it for yourself!
