back to the 1700’s, when German settlers brought the custom to Pennsylvania. Their superstition stated that if a groundhog waking from hibernation sees its shadow when it emerges from its burrow, there will be six more weeks of winter. Or, if the groundhog does not see its shadow, spring will arrive soon . . . The most famous of all groundhogs to make this prediction each year is Pennsylvania’s very own Punxsutawney Phil – or, as he’s known by his full name, “Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators, and Weather Prophet Extraordinary.''

Military Saves Week

Military Saves Week is MondaySaturday, February 24-29, 2020. The Military Saves campaign— a component of the nonprofit America Saves—encourages military families to save money every month. The purpose is to assist service men and women and their immediate family members in their efforts to build personal wealth through reducing debt and establishing savings goals. Building wealth affords service members and their families an opportunity to achieve goals such as maintaining an emergency cash reserve, buying a house, or paying for college. Engaging military spouses is also critical, as they play a vital role in maintaining financial discipline and stability within their families.

Take the Pledge!

Military Saves encourages all service members, their families, and civilian employees to “Take the Military Saves Pledge”—a commitment to help yourself and your family to save money, reduce debt and build wealth over time. Service members who take the pledge can receive a monthly e-newsletter and a quarterly e-newsletter from America Saves. Go to militarysaves.org for more information and start saving today! Eglin's Airmen & Family Readiness Center Reminds You ...

The 2020 National Election is Coming Up Fast! Important Dates to Remember: The first primary will take place on February 3, 2020 in Iowa — where both the Democratic and Republican parties will hold caucuses. New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina also hold primaries in February. The next major primary event will be Super Tuesday on March 3, 2020. Sixteen jurisdictions and the Democrats Abroad are expected to hold a primary event. The general election for president of the United States takes place on November 3, 2020.

How Does the Presidential Election Work? When Americans vote for President and Vice President of the United States, they are actually voting for presidential electors in the Electoral College. According to the Constitution, each state is assigned a number of electors equal to the combined total of the state’s Senate and House of Representatives delegations. Today, there are 538 electors. The number of electors per state ranges from three (District of Columbia) to 55 (California). To be elected President of the United States, a candidate needs a majority of 270 electoral votes.

Interesting Facts of Past Elections: • George Washington is the only U.S. president in history to win 100% of the Electoral College vote. This is mainly because organized parties weren’t yet formed, and he ran unopposed. • Before the 1804, the presidential candidate who received the second highest electoral votes became vice-president. • John Quincy Adams is the only president to have lost both the popular vote and electoral vote and still become president. • In the 1984 presidential election, Ronald Reagan received both the highest number of popular votes and the highest number of electoral votes in the history of U.S. presidential elections. These numbers have yet to be surpassed by another presidential candidate. • The only President and Vice President to never be elected to the office was Gerald Ford. He became vice president when Spiro Agnew resigned and became president when Nixon resigned. • The U.S. Marine band has played at every presidential inauguration since 1801. • The 2020 U.S. presidential election will be the first time all members of the millennial generation will be able to vote.
