Jennifer Kepple Head Librarian Eglin Digital Library
“Because we’re a digital library, I do hear from people overseas. I just recently worked with a gentleman in Afghanistan. I got an email asking, ‘How do I access these databases? I’ve got a team here, but they can’t get out to the library.’ “I was able to work with the LRC librarian overseeing the base libraries in deployed areas. She and I have been able to get that whole group signed up with library cards - now they can watch a movie, they can listen to an audiobook. We know it’s so important for them, especially when they’re in places like Afghanistan - they need that recreation, they need that break. It was a team effort with another Air Force librarian and that makes me happy. He didn’t have to step foot in a library and he still gets the access, and that’s the best thing about digital.” Photo By Andrea Stachewicz, 96 FSS Marketing

Meet Eglin’s
School Liaison Officer By Rachel LaBud, 96 FSS Marketing
Talking to Elaine LaJeunesse, Eglin AFB’s School Liaison Officer (SLO), it’s clear how passionate she is about ensuring military kids get the best possible education. As the SLO, LaJeunesse helps each military family that comes through Eglin find the right schools and programs to meet the educational needs of their family. “I promote communication between the local K-12 schools in 4 districts, military families, installation leaders, and the surrounding communities,” LaJeunesse says. “I promote parental involvement in their children’s education, and I identify barriers to academic success and develop solutions in partnership with local schools and the military-connected families to overcome the obstacles to a successful education and their school transitions.” Frequent moves and deployments can be difficult, but that’s where the SLO comes in. LaJeunesse works with families throughout their time at Eglin, discussing their specific needs. Once an incoming family has connected with their sponsor, LaJeunesse recommends that they start researching local schools and requirements. She also helps families interested in homeschooling, connecting them with local district homeschool liaisons and organizations. LaJeunesse recommends that parents familiarize themselves with the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3). MIC3 was created to remove barriers to educational success imposed on children of military families due to frequent moves and deployments, by focusing on enrollment, placement and attendance, eligibility, and graduation. The goal is to make transitions between states as smooth as possible.

78 other SLOs in the Air Force, or to a SLO in a sister service. The “warm hand-off,” as she calls it, makes sure that our military families are being looked after and connected throughout their time in service. While life isn’t always easy for military kids, in her career LaJeunesse has seen just how strong and valuable they can be. “Military kids bring a diversity of experience and knowledge to their social environment. Their resiliency, courage, and adaptability empower them to overcome adversity and positively impact their surroundings.” Throughout April, schools and organizations both on-base and off base celebrate military kids through “Month of the Military Child,” with special activities, programs and events highlighting the sacrifices and contributions made by military kids around the world. It’s something LaJeunesse and 96 Test Wing leadership care deeply about — recognizing and honoring the service of military-connected kids. “Our kids serve too,” she points out.
“The whole goal is to really assist bridging the commands and the schools, and the families and the communities to help our military-connected students succeed in their education ventures,” LaJeunesse says.
For more information or assistance, LaJeunesse encourages families to reach out to her directly. The SLO office is located in Suite 252 (2nd floor) of Bldg 210, at 310 Van Matre Avenue. To set up an appointment, please call 850-882-4319.

MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD SPOTLIGHT
The Hogan Family: Home is Together
By Rachel LaBud, 96 FSS Marketing
10
Captain Jonathan Hogan and his wife Krystal are some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. They’re easygoing, optimistic, and kind, and happen to be familiar faces at 96 FSS facilities and special events. We met at Postl Point to talk about what life is like at Eglin for the family of five. In tow were kids Kira, 7, James, 5, and Jackson, 2. The two oldest kids were full of energy, running around the beach collecting shells to show mom and dad. Oblivious to his siblings, Jackson napped peacefully. Originally from Lubbock, TX, the couple worked together at their local grocery store. “My uniform caught her eye,” Hogan says, laughing. Krystal agrees.
They’ve been stationed at Eglin for the last year, where Hogan assesses cybersecurity and technical approaches for a munitions program. The family lives in Crestview, where Krystal homeschools the three kids. The Hogans have taken advantage of Eglin’s many events, including FallFest, WinterFest, and First Fridays, which they credit in helping them connect with other local families.
“We’re from everywhere...”
“We’re from everywhere; people are from all over. We need these to help bring us together and build that community,” Krystal says. Having a tight-knit support group also helps the Hogans navigate some of the struggles military families face. They PCS’d to Eglin from Andrews AFB in Washington D.C., and moving across the country with small kids is no easy feat. “The hardest part is explaining to Kira — she was 6 when we moved — why we can’t just go have a playdate with our friends from Maryland,” Krystal says.
“This has been my favorite base so far. We’ve really been able to get plugged into a community,” Krystal says.
“James still says his best friend is Levi, who he hasn’t seen in three years. I think that’s the toughest part,” Hogan agrees.
One event has quickly become a family favorite — The Bayview’s monthly Member Celebrations.
“But, the positive is all the people they’ve met. They’ve got friends now in Colorado, Maryland, friends back in Texas and Alabama, everybody’s all over so we can send mail, do pen-pals,” Krystal says.
“Kira asked today, are we going to our fancy dinner tonight?” Krystal says, laughing. “She always asks what kind of crafts they’re going to have. She loves crafting and coloring.”
“And Facebook helps too,” Hogan chimes in. “So we can be like, Rosie’s been doing this! See, see what she did? So I guess they get to live that way, live vicariously, but keep that memory alive of the friends that they’ve met, so that way they don’t really forget about them.” The Hogans stay busy, participating in many of the programs offered through Eglin. They’re involved in Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, soccer, summer reading programs and regularly volunteer at the Fisher House. The family also loves going to the beach, camping and exploring the local zoos.
“We’re club members, so it’s a night we don’t have to cook or clean,” Hogan says. “We just show up and eat. We let them go outside and play or do a craft while we get to talk.” With menus changing each month, there’s always something new for club members to look forward to. These programs haven’t just helped his family feel more connected, but also Hogan’s unit. “We’ve grown three or fourfold, so we’ve got a lot of new people coming in. Having that spot to come together, get on the same page, make new friends, it helps the unit accomplish the mission. Because we’re closer, we work better together.”

NAFJobs.org GOLF TIPS FROM THE PRO:
• • • WARMING UP • • • Do you warm up before your round? What is your routine? Do you have one? Do you run to the first tee, hit your first drive and off you go — good or bad? Does it take you 3-4 holes to actually warm up and get into the right golf feeling? If so, you are giving those first holes away to chance.
WARM UP FIRST — and start playing great right from the first tee! Denise Kafferly, Class A LPGA Pro EGLIN GOLF COURSE
The warm-up process is personal, but every golfer should have one. If you’re wasting shots because you aren’t warmed up yet, you’re also at a much higher risk for injuries. A good warm-up session doesn’t have to take long, and you can do it on the first tee box. One criteria I think about when I warm up is that I try to work on all my body parts, lower body, upper body, and rotation. Find something that works for you and ensure that you’re working all those body parts, as it will set the tone for the rest of your golf round. Set a new goal for yourself in 2019 and start warming up to give yourself a better chance at shooting lower scores!
