Eglin Library Serves the Community in a New Location By Natalie Dozier | 96 FSS Marketing
After settling into its new location for the past few weeks, the Eglin Library provides increased support to the Eglin community with a change of scenery. The Eglin Library recently completed its move from Building 825 to the first floor of the old Fitness Annex, Building 843. With a floor plan originally designed for a well-equipped gym, the library’s staff has optimized the new space for its patrons to take full advantage of the library’s equipment and collections.
18
Jennifer Kepple, the head librarian, was looking forward to the move and how the library could continue to serve those on base with safety in mind. “We were hoping, in the new space, that we’re able to create an environment that is safe, where we can maintain social distancing and allow patrons to come in and utilize the space,” she said. Even though the library had to close for eight weeks at the beginning of the pandemic, it did not have to cease its virtual services at any point. Throughout the closure and beyond, the library still served its patrons with the ability to answer questions via email as well as its vast database of e-books, audio books, movies, music
and research tools. “We were really encouraged by how many discovered that they can access thousands of items from a personal device,” Kepple said. The library continues to see a steady increase in those who take advantage of the library’s digital services as well as an increase in foot traffic. The expansion into the new space isn’t the only expansion for the Eglin Library—its physical collection is currently expanding as well. The library recently received $8,000 in centralappropriated funds for the addition of adult and children’s books throughout the coming months. In addition to these physical items, the library’s continued contract with movies has a great variety of DVDs for checkout. Kepple was excited to highlight the library’s addition of a new contract for video games—patrons can now check out games for PS4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One systems. On top of the new additions, the library has more in store for kids of all ages to enjoy. During the month of October, the library has planned activities and events that are fun and follow
safety guidelines. The library has prepared takehome craft and STEM projects for kids to enjoy at home—past examples include tissue-paper crafts and a solar oven made of a pizza box. Kepple also plans to resume storytime sessions, held outdoors to allow for social distancing. The library has plenty of services for adults to enjoy as well. Kepple said she is very happy that active duty service members are coming back to utilize testing materials as testing resumes. Computers that can access basic internet sites as well as military websites and services are an important amenity available for service members from all branches on base and in the community, and the library’s staff is available to assist patrons with accessing physical test materials and practice-test websites. “We are continually adding to study guide materials for checkout so that we can support our active duty with their educational endeavors,” she said. The Eglin Library is currently open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and can be reached by phone at 850-882-9308.

Home School Assistance for Army Families Army Emergency Relief (AER) officials have announced comprehensive enhancements to their existing home school assistance program, now called the "Home Schooling and Remote Education Assistance Program." Effective immediately, eligible Soldiers with dependent children in kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible for financial assistance to support costs associated with traditional home school and remote education. Examples of supporting materials include traditional supplies such as pens and paper as well as educational technology including computers, tablets and software. The eligibility period for this special category of assistance is retroactive to March 1, 2020 and will continue until rescinded by AER headquarters. The purpose of the program is to relieve stress on military families who have been thrust into a “hybrid combination of resident schooling and stay-at-home virtual schooling” or if given an option by the sanctioned
and/or affiliated school district to enroll in “Full Time Virtual Schooling” and who must pay out of pocket for supplies and materials that the sanctioned and/or affiliated school cannot supply. Parents who wish to apply for this assistance would need a letter from the sanctioned or affiliated school district stating that the student is in fact enrolled in the school, what option type the student is being educated under (Hybrid or Full Virtual), and a full school supply list and/or a syllabus of required technology items needed. Of those required items and supplies, please have the school break down which items the school provides and which items the parents must provide. AER can assist with the items that parents must provide. Eligibility is extended to active-duty, retired, and medically retired Soldiers, survivors, U.S. Army Reserve (USAR), and Army National Guard (ARNG) Soldiers activated on Title 10 orders for 31 or more consecutive days. USAR and ARNG Soldiers activated on Title 10 or Title 32 orders in support of COVID-19 are also eligible regardless of the length of activation. AF SkillBridge Program First Tuesday of the Month | 1 pm
If you're interested in participating in the DoD SkillBridge (SKB) program, the first step is to attend a mandatory SKB briefing, presented virtually on the first Tuesday of each month. SKB offers an opportunity for military members who are retiring, separating, and/or discharging with honorable conditions, to participate in an apprenticeship or internship. The SKB offers training that must demonstrate a ‘high’ probability of post-service employment. Email michael.wrightreynolds@us.af.mil to receive your invitation, meeting ID and password for the next virtual briefing.

(Due to COVID-19, check for limited services) Parents of children from 6 weeks to 5 years of age can receive comprehensive child care services at one of Eglin's two Child Development Center (CDC) locations. FAMILY CHILD CARE ••• eglinlife.com/fcc The Eglin Family Child Care (FCC) office is a parent's network for connecting with on-base and affiliated off-base child care providers operating from their homes — a high-quality alternative to center-based care. All FCC providers are licensed and certified by not only the State of Florida but also Eglin leadership, and must operate by Air Force standards. SCHOOL AGE CARE ••• eglinlife.com/schoolage (Due to COVID-19, check for limited services) Before and after school programs — as well as full-day camps and activities during spring, summer, and winter breaks — are all provided for children ages 5-12 at Eglin's School Age Care (SAC) facility. With a goal to develop interests, enhance life skills, encourage positivity and promote self-worth, SAC provides a safe, nurturing, and age-appropriate environment for youngsters. SCHOOL LIAISON ••• eglinlife.com/slo The mission of Eglin's School Liason office (SLO) is to eliminate barriers and build bridges for the academic success of military connected children, grades K-12. Through networks and partnerships with local and global communities, the SLO works to assist Active Duty parents with education matters that are unique to their children and the military lifestyle. eglinlife.com/slo YOUTH CENTER ••• eglinlife.com/youth (Due to COVID-19, check for limited services) The Eglin Youth Center goes above and beyond to provide a "Positive Place For Kids!" Youth up to age 18 partake in year-round activities that promote character and leadership development, life skills, education, arts, fitness and sports — all in a safe, supervised environment. 28
Become A Family Child Care Provider Persons interested in a career as an Eglin Family Child Care (FCC) provider can obtain licensing through the Eglin FCC office and earn a potential monthly income of $4,500!
Any on-base individual providing care for another family’s child for more than 10 hours a week on a regular basis must be licensed. Providers are needed to offer care for a wide variety of needs, including hourly, part time, full time, evenings, weekends, special needs, and overnight care. The Eglin FCC office is also seeking individuals living off-base in the surrounding communities to become licensed affiliated child care providers. Affiliated providers must be spouses of a military ID card holder (active or retired) and must meet the State of Florida registered requirements prior to receiving an affiliated certificate from the Eglin MSG commander. Applications are available online at eglinlife.com/fcc For information on the next new provider orientation, contact the FCC staff at eglinfcc@gmail.com
