Operation Hero, hosted annually by Eglin’s Airman & Family Readiness Center, is a mock deployment experience open to all Team Eglin children, youth, and teens. The deployment experience consists of three phases.

RECREATION & LEISURE

Phase 1 is the deployment processing line at the 96 AMXS Hangar 103, where participants are issued their dog tags and ID’s, plus receive t-shirts and other giveaways. In Phase 2, participants and parents will take part in fun activities presented by a variety of base and community supporters, including face painting, deployment demonstrations, and military vehicles and weapons displays. In Phase 3, participants will receive a hero’s “welcome home” reception with food for all to enjoy, plus K-9 demonstrations, aircraft displays, and more. Pre-registration is mandatory by October 5. The Eglin Digital Library hosts an hour (or more) of STEM learning and activities, featuring a different lesson each month on practical concepts of science, technology, engineering, and math. On September 13, kids ages 10 and older are invited to take part in cool chemistry experiments with the Cabbage Juice Titration Lab! Active Parenting of Teens Thursdays, October 4, 11, 18 & 25 11:30 am-1 pm The Eglin Airman & Family Readiness Center will host a 4-session “Active Parenting of Teens” workshop each Thursday beginning October 4. Parents of teens are invited to attend and receive the guidance and support they need for turning the challenges of raising a teenager into opportunities for growth. Topics to be covered include methods of respectful discipline, skills for clear and honest communication, concrete strategies to prevent risky behavior, how to be an encouraging parent, and much more. First Monday-Friday Each Month 4:30-6 pm (Winter Hours)

In just five lessons, we’ll give you the game of a lifetime! The Eglin Golf Course presents “Get Golf Ready!”—an introductory golf program for ages 14 through adult. Whether you’re a complete beginner, or just haven’t played in some time, you’ll be right into the swing of things after just five lessons. Get Golf Ready is a nationwide initiative by the USGA, PGA, PGA Tour, and LPGA to engage golfers and is taught

by Eglin’s PGA Professional. The clinic consists of four lessons and one day of “on course” instruction. Evening sessions are held MondayFriday, the first full week of each month. Yacht Club & Dive Flight Monthly Events Fridays, September 7 & 21, October 5 & 19 | 6:30 pm The Eglin Yacht Club & Dive Flight invites everyone interested in boating and boating activities, or SCUBA diving, to join the club! The first Friday of each month is a Family Night Cookout at the Yacht Club at 6:30 p.m. Enjoy freshly grilled burgers and hot dogs with all the fixin’s for just $4 per person. The Yacht Club’s monthly meeting is scheduled for every third Friday of the month at 6:30 p.m. followed by a Membership Night for adults only. The Eglin Dive Flight hosts Gulf of Mexico Dive Trips on various Saturdays throughout the month. Divers are required to have at least an Open Water certification. Glow in the Dark Disc Golf Friday, September 7 | 7 pm Eglin Outdoor Recreation invites all disc golf enthusiasts out to Postl Point for a round of Glow In The Dark Disc Golf. When the sun goes down, the fun begins! Outdoor Rec will provide players with special lights for their discs, and can provide discs as well, if needed. At least 9 out of 18 baskets on the course will be illuminated with LED lighting. Cost to play is $5 per person. Prior disc golf experience is recommended, but all skill levels may join. Participants are encouraged to bring bottled water, insect repellent, a headlamp or flashlight, and to wear comfortable athletic or hiking shoes. 850-882-5058

Scenic Trail Hike Saturday, September 8 | 8:30 am Join Eglin Outdoor Recreation for a hiking trip along a portion of the Florida National

Scenic Trail. Hikers will experience spring-fed creeks and endless plant and animal life along a 7-mile stretch of Florida’s natural beauty. Participants meet at Eglin’s Outdoor Recreation Center at Postl Point for an 8:30 a.m. departure. Cost is $10 per person and includes round trip transportation to the trail (about 45 minutes away) and a hiking permit. Hikers are encouraged to bring bottled water, a sandwich and snacks, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Hats and long sleeves are also recommended. Snorkeling at the Navarre Reef Saturday, September 8 | 8 am Join Eglin Outdoor Recreation for a 2-3 hour snorkeling excursion at the Navarre Beach Marine Sanctuary, where all kinds of ocean life can be found... maybe even sea turtles! Cost is $15 per person and includes snorkels, masks,

fins, and transportation. Participants should meet at Postl Point for departure to Navarre, and are encouraged to bring bottled water, sunscreen, a towel and change of clothes, plus snacks or a lunch. Family Fun Golf Sundays | Discounts begin at 2 pm It’s family fun on the Falcon Course every Sunday afternoon starting at 2 p.m.! Friday, September 14 | 6 am Join Eglin Outdoor Recreation on a Sunrise Paddle excursion and enjoy the fresh morning air out on the water. It’s a relaxing way to start your day, and you might even catch a view of dolphins when they are most active. Trip departs from Postl Point. Cost is $10 per person and includes all equipment. Participants are encouraged to bring bottled water, a towel, a change of clothes, and water shoes or sandals. All skill levels are welcome; instruction is available for beginners, if needed. Disc Golf Tournament Saturday, September 15 | 7:30 am All ages and skill levels are invited to compete in Eglin Outdoor Recreation’s Doubles Disc Golf Tournament, taking place on the disc golf course at Postl Point. Players will compete as two-person teams in a “Best Shot” format. Two rounds will be played with a break for lunch in between. Six available divisions include: Recreation, Advanced, Intermediate, Novice, Women, and Juniors (14 and under). Prizes will be awarded to top finishers in each division. Registration is $60 per team and includes a Player Pack from Dynamic Discs (one for each player), plus lunch and beverages. Contact Outdoor Recreation to register no later than Friday, September 14. Dog Obedience Classes Wednesdays, Sep 19-Oct 17 | 5 pm Tuesdays, Oct 9-Nov 6 | 5 pm Can’t get Rover to roll over? Basic Dog Obedience is just what your pup needs! Classes are specialized for pups over four months of age, or adult dogs who haven’t had previous

training. Your canine companion will learn basic obedience commands and good doggy manners, and individual behavioral problems such as excessive barking and jumping will be addressed. Course sessions last five weeks, with classes held for a maximum of 8 dogs. The first class meeting will be for owners only (no dogs should attend, please!). Cost for each five-week course is $75 and includes everything needed to participate. Dogs must be current on all vaccinations, including kennel cough. Paddle Board Clinic Friday, September 21 | 1 pm Eglin Outdoor Recreation invites you to an introductory Paddle Board Clinic at Postl Point, to learn the art and technique of this popular “stand-up” watersport. Full Moon Kayak Tuesday, September 25 | 7 pm Come paddle with Eglin Outdoor Recreation, out to see the full moon rise over the bay. This twohour guided excursion will take participants on a kayaking trip to a secluded beach for an amazing view of the night sky, a small fire with s’mores, and a moonlit paddle back to Postl Point. Participation is open to all base personnel and registered guests, ages 16 and older, who have some prior kayaking experience. Cost is $20 per person. Single and double kayaks are available. Taekwondo Class: Ages 6-Adult Tuesdays & Thursdays | Youth: 4-5 pm | Adult: 5-6 pm The Eglin Youth Center hosts Taekwondo Classes, and invites all ages (6+) to come enjoy a FREE first session! Wear sweats and a t-shirt, bring a bottled water, and be ready to learn. “Taekwondo is one of the traditional Korean martial arts teaching more than physical fighting skills. It is a discipline that enhances our spirit and life through training our body and mind.” Cost for continuing sessions is $50 per month; a family rate is available. 850-882-8212

Youth Leadership Clubs Eglin Youth Center members are encouraged to let their voices be heard by joining one of the Center’s leadership clubs—the Torch Club or the Keystone Club. The Torch Club meets each Tuesday at 3 p.m. for youth ages 9-12, and the Keystone Club meets Tuesdays at 2:45 p.m. for teens ages 13-18.
