“I’m going to be Jason! And honestly, I like all types of candy.” Charly
“I plan on being a panda. My favorite candy is Snickers.” Adriana

Erik Dahl & Rachel Bower Program Coordinators, Eglin Outdoor Recreation
“I’m originally from Wisconsin, and moved to Colorado for five years before making my way to Florida. While I'm not a big fan of the ‘no seasons’ and long summers in Florida, I do enjoy the beaches and being able to do many adventurous activities outdoors. I would have to say my favorite has been whitewater rafting. Deep-sea fishing is another. I can confidently say I have the best job on Eglin.” — Erik
“I’m a California native who moved here two-and-a-half years ago, and I love living in Florida! I’m never leaving, and I hope to retire here in the future. Florida has so much to offer on the beautiful Emerald Coast. The unlimited outdoor activities are a plus, and I enjoy fishing and hunting the most. If you’re ever in the area, come say hi to Erik and me and check out the variety of programs.” — Rachel

Eglin Auto Hobby Shop
Fully Equipped for the DIY Mechanic
Not only does Eglin’s Auto Hobby Shop provide full-service vehicle repair and maintenance from its staff of qualified mechanics—it is also a "doit-yourself" mechanic's playground! Each of the shop's twelve bays is stocked with top-of-the-line tools for performing anything from an oil change to brakes maintenance, light suspension work, A/C charge, or even a simple light bulb change. "No official training is needed to come in and work on your vehicle," says manager Gene Wright. "You'll just need proper footwear. Closed-toed shoes." On average, the shop serves 450 customers per month. "Our busiest days are Fridays, Saturdays, and paydays," says Wright. For the most efficient repairs, the Auto Hobby Shop knows you need the most efficient tools. That's why four brand new drive-on lifts have been installed with specifications for servicing a wider
16
variety of vehicles. Two lifts are rated up to 14,000 pounds, and one features an extended ramp for low-profile vehicles. These, plus three newer postframe lifts, are regularly inspected both in-house and by an outside agency to ensure the highest safety standards. Most lifts are equipped with an impact wrench and lug sockets. “Many folks are surprised by the tools we keep in the shop,” says Wright. "For instance, Eglin is the only base that offers the Hunter Road Force® auto tire balancer and mounter." Stall spaces can be rented for $12/hour and include use of a lift and toolbox. Additional or specialized tools can be checked out from behind the counter (extra fees may apply) and parts can be ordered for delivery right to the shop, sometimes with sameday arrival depending on availability. Disposal of oil (free) and antifreeze ($1/gallon) is also available. Need assistance? Never fear. "Instruction and direction can be given by our technicians to help guide you on the task at hand," says Wright. (Labor costs may apply.) He adds, "Keep an eye out for our basic car care class, coming soon—‘The Least You Should Know About Your Vehicle.'" Eglin's Auto Hobby Shop is located in Bldg 721, behind the Thrift Shop near the East Gate. The shop is open Tuesday-Saturday for anyone with base access. For current hours of operation, visit eglinlife.com/autoshop, or call 850-882-2484.

For every military member who has ever headed off on a long deployment or TDY and thought, “If only there were some way to have my car cared for while I’m gone” — the 96th Force Support Squadron is proud to announce a brand new service that does exactly that! The Deployed Car Care Program, a unique FSS feature being pioneered at Eglin, is here to solve the problem of active duty members’ personal vehicles sitting parked for weeks or months on end, unattended to and practically abandoned during their times of deployment. Kristen Cortelyou, a member of the 96 FSS Marketing team, had the idea for the program after noticing a flat tire on a car that had been parked for several weeks in a dormitory parking lot. The sight of the flat made her think of her brother, a deployed Army soldier at the time, who had chosen to put his own car into storage while he was away. Cortelyou felt inspired to help make such an option available here at Eglin. From that initial idea stage, the project received thorough development by Gene Wright, general manager of the Eglin Auto Hobby Shop, where the program would be implemented. Together, Wright and Cortelyou presented the concept of the Deployed Car Care Program to base leadership. It was unanimously well received!
PRICING:
E1 – E4 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $29.95 per month E5 & Above . . . . . . . . . . . . . $39.95 per month
And now, in a relatively short span of time, the Deployed Car Care Program is fully a reality, offering military members the advantage of these services during deployment: • Locked & Secure Storage Spaces (30 available) • Pre-Inspection to Identify Any Vehicle Issues with estimates provided for repairs, which can be completed during deployment • Weekly Walk-Around of the vehicle • Weekly Engine Start to reach operating temperature • More Thorough Weekly Inspections including battery, tire, A/C and system checks • Bi-Weekly Drive of the Vehicle in the Auto Hobby parking area • Final Inspection before pick-up • And lastly — A Car Wash! “Cars don’t like to sit,” says Wright. “They like to be used. This is a real need that the military community has been without.” In fact, the Auto Hobby Shop has already welcomed and secured the very first vehicle to utilize the Deployed Car Care Program — even prior to the program coming fully on-line!
