Row in the New Year

Now - Jan. 28 | 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Celebrate your commitment to fitness and Row in the New Year with the Eglin Fitness Center! Active duty, guard and reserve personnel are invited to compete in the 2K rowing competition at the Main Fitness Center from Jan. 4 to Jan. 28. DoD civilians, retirees and dependents are also invited to compete on Jan. 8 and Jan. 22 at the Field House Pavilion. Prizes will be given to the top three men and women! Reservations for competing are available weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; those who are unableto make a reservation during these times due to work can request an exception. (850) 882-6223

Hot Chocolate Hike Feb. 13 | 8:30 a.m. What could be better than venturing into the great outdoors to enjoy the pristine beauty of nature in winter? How about venturing into the great outdoors to enjoy the pristine beauty of nature in winter, plus hot chocolate?! Eglin Outdoor Recreation invites you out for a Hot Chocolate Hike along a portion of the Florida National Scenic Trail. Participants meet at the Outdoor Recreation Center at Postl Point for an 8:30 a.m. departure. Cost is $15 per person and includes round-trip transportation to the trail (about 45 minutes away), a hiking permit, and did we mention hot chocolate? Hikers are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and breathable clothing, and to bring bottled water, a sandwich, snacks, sunscreen and insect repellent. Hats and long sleeves are also recommended. Participation is open to all base personnel and their guests, ages 8 and up. Sign up at Outdoor Rec and please make staff aware of any allergies or other pertinent medical conditions when signing up. (850) 882-5058

Winter Reading Program Now - Jan. 30, 2021

Join the Eglin Library for its first-ever Winter Reading Program! Readers of all ages are invited to log reading minutes through Beanstack and earn cool incentives. All incentives can be picked up from the Library (Bldg 843, first floor) once earned. Stop by the library or head to www.eglinlibrary.com to register! Full Moon Kayak Jan. 27 | 6 p.m.

Come paddle with Eglin Outdoor Recreation out from Postl Point to see the full moon rise over the bay. This two-hour guided excursion will take participants on a kayaking trip to a small secluded beach for an amazing view of the night sky, a small fire with s'mores and a moonlit paddle back to Postl Point. Participation is open to all base personnel and registered guests, ages 16 and older, who have some prior kayaking experience. Cost is $20 per person and includes all necessary equipment and ingredients for s'mores. Single and double kayaks are available. Participants are encouraged to bring bottled water and a flashlight, and to wear non-cotton clothing. Date may be adjusted in the case of inclement weather conditions. Adult Archery Clinic Feb. 6 | 10 a.m.

Eglin Outdoor Recreation is offering an Adult Archery Clinic, open to all base personnel. Learn archery basics including stance, draw and load, anchor, aim and expand, and release. The cost is $20 per person and includes the use of Outdoor Rec's top-of-the-line archery equipment. Please do not bring any personal equipment. Participants are required to wear closed-toe shoes and are encouraged to bring bottled water. Participants will meet at the Postl Point Outdoor Recreation building. (850) 882-5058

Dog Obedience Classes Feb. 9 - March 9 | Tuesdays 4 - 5 p.m.

Can't get Rover to roll over? Basic Dog Obedience is just what your pup needs! Classes are specialized for pups over four months of age, or adult dogs who have had no previous training. Your canine companion will learn basic obedience commands and good doggy manners, and individual behavioral problems such as excessive barking and jumping will be addressed. Course sessions last five weeks, with classes held for a maximum of 10 dogs. The first class meeting will be for owners only (no dogs should attend, please!). Cost for each five-week course is $75 and includes everything needed to participate. Dogs must be current on all vaccinations, including kennel cough; owners are asked to bring their dog's shot record to the first class.
