The biggest LGBT sports and cultural festival in the world took place in Cologne from July 31 to August 7, 2010. Some 10,000 participants from more than 70 countries converged for the Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010 and celebrated the principles of participation, inclusion and personal best. There were 35 sports and 5 culture categories where people from all over the world took part in, not to mention numerous parties and other events during the event. The motto was Be part of it! and the invitation was open to everyone – heterosexual or homosexual, male, female, transgender or transsexual, and regardless of religion, nationality, ethnic heritage, political convictions, athletic skills, physical capabilities, age or physical condition. Euro Games Brief introduction EuroGames, the European Gay & Lesbian Championships, is an annual European sporting event governed by the European Gay & Lesbian Sport Federation (EGLSF). It is the biggest European athletic event for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people (but far from being restricted to them).
thanked all the volunteers for the many years of work to complete a successful week. Cologne passed the FGG flag to Cleveland-Akron, Ohio, USA, the host city of Gay Games IX Cleveland-Akron 2014. The organisers and city officials thanked all participants, visitors and the people from Cologne for coming and a fantastic week. Together they made the VIII. Gay Games Cologne 2010 a wonderful event. At the event the participants, guests and visitors had the chance to experience some very unique moments. We witnessed full support from public figures like Dr. Guido Westerwelle, German Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister, Matthew Mitcham, Australian Olympic medallist, Taylor Dayne, American Pop Artist, and many others, from politicians, athletes and others.
European Gay & Lesbian Sport Federation (EGLFS) cooperated with Gay Games Cologne 2010 and Federation of Gay Games (FGG), promoting the event prior to its start and inviting its members to participate. EGLSF Board members, lead by both co-presidents, were present both at the opening and closing ceremonies, and several also actively participated in the Games as athletes. Let us congratulate the Organisers and FGG for the successful event. We can also point out that EGLSF member club S.C. Janus actively contributed to the event, so congratulations to them as well! For more details about the Gay Games Cologne, please see the official website http://www-games-cologne.de.
EuroGames is the oldest continental LGBT sporting event, offering a highquality sport event to the LGBT sports community. The EuroGames are open to everyone who wishes to participate, regardless of gender, age, race, sexual prefence etc. It is an open event, while still being mindful of the feasabilty of organising sports for certain groups and the organisational capacity of the host (organising committee). Participants from all areas of Europe, and even outside Europe can participate in this unique event. However, to ensure that as many Europeans as possible can take part in this event, participants from outside Europe are put on a waiting list until registration closes. EGLSF calls for candidates to host the EuroGames three years in advance, to allow sufficient time to organise the event. A candidate should be a member of EGLSF and have experience with organising sport events. At the Annual General Assembly (March), the decision is taken by the membership of the EGLSF which candidate will be the host to the EuroGames.

The first games were held in 1992 in the Hague, the Netherlands; next games were organised the next year in the Hague as well. After that, the EuroGames were organised: 1995 in Frankfurt, Germany; 1996 in Berlin, Germany; 1997 in Paris, France; 2000 in Zurich, Switzerland; 2001 in Hannover, Germany; 2003 in Copenhagen, Denmark; 2004 in Munich, Germany; 2005 in Utrecht, the Netherlands; 2007 in Antwerp, Belgium and 2008 in Barcelona, Spain. In the years inbetween, EuroGames were not organised, in order to pay homage to global LGBT sports events organised (Gay Games and Outgames). The next EuroGames will be organised in 2011 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and in 2012 in Budapest, Hungary.
13th EuroGames 2011: Rotterdam
During the Gay Games in Cologne, the EuroGames organisers held a promotional campaign on the big stage at the Neumarkt village. In cooperation with the Budapest Organisers, they prepared an evening of fun, spectacle, music and glamour; all leading to the upcoming experience of the EuroGames.
14th EuroGames 2012: Budapest
On August 19th, the contract with the EGLSF board has been signed in Budapest, together with the Hungarian friends, organisers of EuroGames 2012. Very soon you can expect a newsletter especially for EGLSF-members, with details on prices, venues, housing, special arrangements; anything you can think of and more.
We are happy to announce that organization of EuroGames 2011 in Rotterdam is progressing well. The Organisers received 1,1 million EUR from the city government to support the event. The money is also used to employ a staff of 4 managers who are in the middle of the organization now.
For now, the biggest announcement is that the registration will start via the official website on November 1st. Early bird discount will be in order, so stay tuned! EuroGames 2011 expects you in Rotterdam, the Netherlands between July 20th and 24th 2011! http://www.eurogames2011.eu
The Budapest organisers are also busy preparing for the EuroGames 2012. Apart from the joint promotion this August at the Gay Games, the organisers are also busy promoting the event and getting more visibility in Hungary. The EuroGames 2012 organisers invited EGLSF to attend the local Budapest Pride on July 10. The attendance of representatives from European LGBT sports clubs, and also by EGLSF board members showed strong support and solidarity for Budapest 2012 EuroGames. Another promotion was also done at the Budapest Splash 2010 event.

The organisers are working closely with the Rotterdam EuroGames team, and their unique cooperation is especially active in the fields of ICT, Volunteers, Marketing & Communications and Sponsoring. This fall, the website will also be launched; until then, you can get more information at their Facebook group, or by emailing them. http://2012.eurogames.info
EGLSF Info EGLSF at the Budapest Pride As mentioned, EGLSF was present at the Budapest Pride on July 10, 2010. Louise Englefield, EGLSF female Co-president shares her experience: “I was enormously proud to be asked to speak at the start of Budapest Pride march. Following the election of the new government in Hungary, EGLSF Board wanted to show its solidarity with Budapest’s LGBT community in the lead-in to a 2012 EuroGames, so a small group of us took our message of ‘fair play, tolerance and safety in sports for everyone’ to the beautiful city. The day of the march was hot! 37 degrees compared with the miserable 21 degree we left behind in Manchester, UK! We arrived at the gathering point for the march, a cordoned-off Boulevard in the city centre, lined by body-armoured
police. This could have been quite intimidating had we not been checked into the assembly area by friendly but efficient Budapest Pride volunteers, who searched our bags. The march itself involved about 500 people, a mixture of anti-fascist protestors, international supporters and some Hungarian LGBTs. I was particularly proud to be carrying the EGLSF banner with Gabriella Kormendi, a fellow Board member and Budapest resident alongside other EGLSF members. During the parade, I felt completely safe as police held back hostile protestors at least one block away. Now I know this will seem slightly odd to those western Europeans, like me, who are used to big parades in which half the fun is interaction with the crowds and visibility on the street is everything; but the not insignificant numbers of TV channels present, the subsequent footage and the disruption to traffic alone meant that the parade had a notable impact on the residents of Budapest. Later in the day a taxi driver moaned to us about ‘the gays’ causing disruption. To be honest, I had been slightly nervous about travelling to Budapest Pride and what would await me there, but I have to say I had an amazing weekend. Staying in a local hotel with a 50m pool at only 32 Euro a night for a double room
was a particular highlight, and whilst I didn’t attend the parties (I’m 43 and have lost my party feet!), I did eat out at a restaurant in the centre of the city frequented by the LGBT community on the Saturday night and found other diners, a visible cross section of our community, to be relaxed and friendly. In August I took part in Manchester Pride parade, where more than 90 LGBT organisations, staff networks and unions are represented and LGBT police marched alongside public health workers and fire fighters. A far cry from my experience in Budapest you may think. I am, however, old enough to remember a UK in the early 1990s when police dressed in riot gear to police marches, populated by LGBTs, protesting against ‘Section 28’, homophobic legislation introduced by Margaret Thatcher’s government, which banned any public service from ‘promoting homosexuality’. Many of my Manchester friends – swimmers, badminton players, enjoy Atlasz’ Budapest Splash! tournament every year and have returned again this summer. Personally, I’m looking forward with great anticipation to a EuroGames 2012 and another weekend in an amazing city!”

EGLSF Board Meetings EGLSF Board members had a Skype meeting on July 5 for a follow-up on the May board meeting, and a preparation for the August meeting. During the Gay Games, the the board members met on August 1 in Cologne. The agenda included topics of the Annual General Assembly (finalising the AGA 2010 minutes, and preparation for the AGA 2011), setting up the board meeting and other events calendar, EuroGames (2011, 2012, and beyond), cooperating with international sports bodies (FGG, GLISA, organisers Gay Games, Outgames and other umbrella organisations), funding prospects and challenges (on EU level), internal awards and grants, finances, statute changes and other current matters. The board will have a Skype conference in September, and will meet between October 28 and 31 in the Hague, where they will also attend the ILGA Europe Annual Conference. If your club wishes for EGLSF board member to discuss a topic at the next meeting, please send an email before September 15 to eglsf@eglsf.info.
Budapest Splash 2010
Another year, another Budapest Splash on the day when Hungary celebrates its 1010th birthday, as King St. Stephen got the crown form the Pope. The tournament, organised by the EGLSF member club Atlaszsport, was top quality, no difficulties, even though GayGames Cologne 2010 was held only 2 weeks prior to it. The set-up was a little bit different this year: for the first time handball was also part of the Splash games. Besides this
sport, swimming and badminton was also on the menu. During the breaks of the swimming competition, synchronized swimmers showed us a wonderful demo of this elegant and very hard sport. The swimming competition took place where the European championship was held, just a week before, badminton was located at the Military University and handball took place in Buda, at the brand new Sport Max 2 complex. Swimming was split into a number of age groups and all types of swimming, such as breaststroke, medley, freestyle, back-stroke and individuals. Competitors from the Czech Republic have won a large number of medals; other results were divided equally between the teams present. Badminton players came mostly from Hungary, as badminton was one of our most popular sports in Cologne, as well, 2 weeks ago. But fortunately non-Hungarian teams were also present, and all of us won a number of gold medals. At the handball stadium, only 3 teams were present, but we are very proud that team Paris 1 and Paris 2 have chosen Budapest Splash instead of Cologne! The 3rd team, Budapest Hercules Handball won the tournament, making us proud.
Finally, we have to stress the other – nonsporty - message of Splash and similar tournaments. This is all about having fun. We held parties, there was a boat-trip, sightseeing, fireworks and closing brunch at the end. We all know that this is not just about sports. It makes us all friends. In the hosted housing program, we hosted participants from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France and Israel. This again is more about friendships and much less about saving money. The more competitors we have the more hosts we need, and this year hosts made a wonderful job: we had more host than participants. (However, you must know that most Hungarians leave the capital around this holiday.) A big THANK YOU to all of them! We would also like to thank all the organizers who helped us before and during the competition. In addition, we have to mention the non-sport venues for all their support and help: Bolondóra for the registration, Fogasház-pub for the brunch, and the unforgettable party at Mignon. Let’s meet again at the first Central-European EuroGames ever, in Budapest 2012!

Here is also Budapest Splash experience through the eyes of Trevor Burchick, Director of Pride Sports (Manchester, UK): “This was my second trip to Budapest, the first was for the EGLSF AGA in 2006, and this was my first time at the Splash. I participated in the swim tournament (won two golds!) and took part in all the other planned activities except the cinema (I went back to Margret Island instead). The registration venue was easy to find and very welcoming. The organisers worked as an efficient friendly team and were trying very hard to provide any necessary useful information about the Splash weekend. I received a map of locations and complimentary drinks vouchers for the party and the Brunch. The boat trip was a real bonus and provided a great position to see the fireworks outside the Parliament building. On arrival at the pool, a team was there to greet meet and offer some snacks and water, and to explain where things were and about warm up – again a warm welcome. The event was well organised and good fun – the weather helped! After the event we were guided to a café for a well organised set lunch at a nice venue. The organised coach trip was superb! A great bus and we saw a lot of the City at its best and then off to a party venue. I know quite a few people attended just to show their face and leave, but it turned out to be rather good and they all stayed! The Brunch venue was very rustic! There was plenty of food and refreshments available, including vegetarian options – one of the better ones I have experienced. The evening soiree was also held at the brunch venue and provided a nice relaxing evening with friends. Overall, I think the organising team delivered an excellent well organised, good value weekend. They presented Atlas
Budapest in a very positive way and did a fantastic job to recruit for future Splash events, and of course, Eurogames. Plus, they gave a boost future tourism at the same time!
with one objective: Let the Games reunite! In Manchester, Frankfurt is selected as the next meeting place for the EGLSFAGA 2011. Yet to come…
I will be back for a holiday, Eurogames and future Splash events. Thanks to all involved!”
Celebration in Frankfurt: FVV’s 25th anniversary
In March 2011 our friends in Frankfurt, FVV and Artemis, will host the next EGLSF Annual General Assembly. On the 13th of October 2010 FVV turns 25, and we would like to take this opportunity to look back over the history of our future AGA host. Milestones of the last 25 years: 1985: A group of 8 hobby volleyball enthusiasts found the „Frankfurter Volleyballverein e.V.“ 1987: First XMAS Tournament 1989: EGLSF is founded; FVV being among its founders 1995: Artemis and FVV join forces to organize EuroGames III with overwhelming success, breaking the participation record and providing EuroGames with its symbol “Star & Flame”. 1997: Membership grows to 500 2000: FVV is no longer a “volleyball club” but a veritable multisports club with 17 different sports. The name “Frankfurter Volleyballverein e.V.” is maintained, however, as a reminder of the club´s history. 2003: For the first time, more than 1,000 athletes participate in the XMAS Tournament 2010: FVV turns 25! Membership is heading for 800. FVV joins FGG and GLISA
FVV and Artemis will be contacting member organizations, as Frankfurt would like to promote a “marketplace of ideas” at the AGA 2011. Outstanding projects of EGLSF members will be presented and discussed. So now is the time to start thinking about those projects which function particularly well and how to illuminate them in Frankfurt.
XMAS F R A N K F U R T
In honor of FVV´s 25th birthday, there will be a 25% discount on this year´s XMAS Tournament registration fee (48,75€ for sport, party and brunch). This discount will be availabe for 25 days - until September 25. http://www.fvv.org

Gay Footballers Survey 17 July 2010
Day against homophobia in football survey 14 July 2010 In response to the massive interest shown in the Football v Homophobia initiative set up by The Justin Campaign this year, the organisation has decided to create an online survey as part of a global consultation process ahead of the 2011 event. Football v Homophobia itself was initially created as an international day opposing homophobia in football, which provided an opportunity for individuals, communities and teams the world over to communicate their disapproval of homophobia in football and celebrate footballs diverse following under the banner of Football v Homophobia. The way in which the Football v Homophobia initiative has been taken up internationally in its first year has made The Justin Campaign realise as a campaigning organisation how widespread the problem of homophobia in football really is. Homophobia is not just prevalent in the European game but has infected the game throughout the rest of the world. Therefore the creation of this online survey will give interested parties from all around the world the chance to put forward their views and opinions on Football v Homophobia and the results will consequently help The Justin Campaign to understand how this
The 2nd Phase of the online survey GAY FOOTBALLERS ... APPRECIATED OR UNWELCOME is available. Nearly 2,000 fans, players, managers, coaches and referees have participated in the research so far, and you are invited to share your views and opinions on gay footballers and explain why you think only one top professional player in history has openly declared his homosexuality during his playing career. A summary of the results from the first phase is already available. Some of the highlights include the following interesting data: 93% Of fans think there is no place for homophobia in football; 90%+ Think the only thing that matters in football is how the player plays ... not his sexual preferences; fans believe gay players choose not to come out to protect their commercial value, not because they fear the reaction of fans or teammates & many fans see parallels between black players in the 1970s/80s and gay players today. The short survey is anonymous & confidential, no names are gathered. The Topfan research is coordinated by Ellis Cashmore, a professor of culture, media and sport, and Jamie Cleland, a senior lecturer in sociology at the Staffordshire University in the UK. http://www.topfan.co.uk

Queer fans from across Europe to visit Hamburg 30 August 2010 Queer Football Fanclubs from across Europe are to visit Hamburg to celebrate themselves, FC St. Pauli´s 100th birthday and St. Pauli´s current jump to the first German National Football League: “We’re just kicking off!” Just two weeks after the 1st game in the 1st German National Football League: Queer Football Fanclubs from Germany and Switzerland will gather in Hamburg for the 7th European Queer Football Fanclubs’ Conference 2010 from 3 – 5 September, 2010. With the motto “Different colours, same goals!” more than 60 participants, amongst them fanclubs’ representatives from sixteen German and three Suisse football clubs speaking on behalf of more than 800 homosexual football supporters across Europe in total, will come together in Hamburg to celebrate the 3 day event organised by the fanclub Queerpass St. Pauli. The football family in Hamburg is also supporting the gathering: parts of the event will take place at the Millerntorstadium, home ground of FC Sankt Pauli, whereas the extensive work programme is going to kick off at FC St. Pauli former president Corny Littmann’s Schmidt Tivoli theatre. Topics of discussions will be internal economics of the network QFF, welcoming of new member fanclubs and the planned concerted campaigns during the FARE week in October.

On Saturday afternoon the Queer Football Fanclubs meeting will be joined by a range of officials from SV Werder Bremen, Hamburg Sport Club, FC St. Pauli and the director of the Hamburg Football Association. They will discuss with the participants under the motto: “Young, gay and football player- can it be possible?” How is homosexuality treated by the clubs and organisations in the psychosocial education of trainees. Furthermore, on Saturday night the first Queer Football Fanclubs Party „Music for fags and scums“ (as FC St. Pauli fans have been offended by other fans in the past) will take place at the „Jolly Roger“, the official FC St. Pauli fan pub. Dirk Brüllau, QFF spokesman: ”We’re glad that we’re still able to break new records every year! With queer fans from 20 football clubs in Hamburg we can welcome fans from more cities at our event than ever before and despite our young history. This clearly underlines the ongoing interest in our activities and the genuine spirit we want QFF to stand for: queer football fans united and sharing loads of common fields of interest that need to be linked together to make football better…. far beyond local rivalries. And we’re just kicking-off! Also, we’re happy that we can welcome a huge number of representatives from different institutions and football governing bodies in Germany at this year’s conference, showing interest in a dialogue on equal footing between queer fans and other bodies in football. We as QFF with all our members believe that fans’ involvement is the essential basis to fight Homophobia in football that should be tackled successfully and sustainably.” http://www.queerfootballfanclubs.com
