The Pegasus Project Holds Aviation/ Equine Event April 20th in Support of Horse Rescue Efforts

For the fifth year in a row, to assist with its efforts to protect horses, The Pegasus Project will be hosting Wings Over Pegasus, an airplane and equine extravaganza. The event is scheduled 10am-3pm Saturday, April 20th at the 95-acre Pegasus Ranch, located at 7111 FM 2339 in Murchison.

Wings Over Pegasus features a variety of airplanes and helicopters. The Piney Woods Experimental Aircraft Association/Young Eagles Program will offer free airplane rides to kids between the ages of 8 and 17. The event will have a casual, carnival atmosphere featuring “The Raptor” airshow, skydivers, face-painting, fun horse games, pony rides, an Easter egg hunt, gourmet food trucks, arts and crafts, and competitions for the whole family.

There will be a silent auction and a raffle drawing for two roundtrip tickets on Southwest Airlines.

Guests can enjoy photo opportunities with a variety of aircraft, Pegasus horses, and “Pegasito,” the winged-donkey in his kissing booth.

Best Seafood in East Texas!

The Pegasus rescue horses are available to meet, pet, and finger-paint. Guests can visit with the Pegasus trainers and staff to learn about the horses and get information regarding adoption and sponsorship opportunities. The SPCA of East Texas will be on-site with a variety of adoptable dogs.

Parking is $10/vehicle. Food, refreshments, and participation in games are available for purchase.

This event is held to raise awareness about the lifesaving work The Pegasus Project does yearround to care for at-risk horses in this community.

The Pegasus Project was founded in 2009 to combat the prevalent and serious problem of horse neglect, abuse, and abandonment in East Texas; and over the past ten years it has rescued, rehabilitated, retrained, and re-homed hundreds of mistreated horses, donkeys, and mules.

The public is invited to come enjoy the day and help with this very worthy cause. All proceeds benefit the horses of The Pegasus Project.

Literacy Council of Tyler Announces 28th Annual Spelling Bee Theme

The moment so many have awaited is finally here, and Literacy Council of Tyler is ready to reveal the theme for its 28th Annual Corporate Spelling Bee. On Tuesday, August 6th, teams will join together in one of the city of Tyler’s fiercest competitions, armed with dictionaries, trusted colleagues, and most importantly, the will to win.

In addition to taking home the coveted spelling bee trophy, teams can also win the costume portion of the competition. Costumes must reflect the theme of the year, and there is already a stirring among those who want to know – what will the theme be this year?

“There are those who love a guessing game, but ‘I am Sorry,’ there is no simple ‘Clue’ this year,” says Nancy Crawford, LCOT Executive Director.

“And who would want to waste their time in such a ‘Trivial Pursuit’? When it comes to spelling, we have the ‘Monopoly’ on all the fun. We don’t want to ‘Risk’ making people impatient, plus, it’s really just too much ‘Trouble.’ This year’s 28th Annual Corporate Spelling Bee theme is ‘Board Games,’ and we hope to see everyone there.”

From Checkers to Chess, from ‘Boggle’ to ‘Battleship,’ the options are endless. “We really are excited about this year’s theme, and I think it’s going to give our competitors an extra challenge to outdo their creativity from the previous years,” Nancy says. “This event is truly made by the teams and sponsors who come year after year, dressed to impress and ready to compete. I can’t wait to see the characters who walk through the doors on August 6th!”

The Annual Corporate Spelling Bee is the primary fundraiser for Literacy Council of Tyler, and is held at CrossWalk Conference Center at Green Acres Baptist Church.

Downtown Heart Hunt

On the second Saturday of every month, people from all over converge on Downtown Tyler for Hit the Bricks. Downtown Tyler will be bursting with family fun, entertainment, music, food, history tours, art, and of course, the chance to check out a great locally-owned restaurant, bar, or retail establishment.

Catch the free shuttle ride (weather permitting) sponsored by Tyler Innovation Pipeline to check out all of the fun events happening! The shuttle will run until around 4pm.

Other events going on for Hit the Bricks Second Saturday are: • Starting at 9am: Main Street and Fit City Tyler invite you to explore Downtown in a fun and competitive scavenger hunt! Teams of 2, 3, or 4 will take on the Downtown Heart Hunt starting at 9am. Teams will have one hour to get the most points by finding hearts around Downtown using hints and then uploading photos of the members with each heart onto social media with the hashtag #DowntownHunt. The top three teams will get some awesome prizes! All team members will get an official Heart Hunt t-shirt and a ticket to the lunch celebration.

This event is limited to the first 20 teams, so sign up today!

• 10am (beginners) and 11am (advanced): Free French Class at the Tyler Public Library - everyone is welcome at any skill level.

• 10am-4pm: “Planning your Garden at Goodman Museum - Come create Mola art with a spring and plant motif. Mola is an intricate, brightly colored sewn fabric with the forms of animals, plants, and shapes that were used to decorate the blouses of the Kuna women in Panama. It is a recognized symbol of their culture to represent their status,

a beautiful display of artistic expression and their traditional identity. The families that participate in this activity will be creating similar designs out of construction paper. Examples and ideas will be available. While you create the Mola art, they will be discussing the benefits of home and community gardening with an emphasis on building interest in creating a Junior Master Gardeners of Smith County program in the summer.

• 10am-4pm: Shop Local Event at Tyler Public Library - Back by popular demand, the Tyler Public Library will be hosting local artists, crafters, and sellers, encouraging patrons to Shop Local! A large variety of vendors will be selling their wares in the Library Lobby. 10% of each vendor’s profits will go to the Friends of the Tyler Public Library to help fund future Library programming.

• 10am-5pm: Treasure Hunt at Ye Olde City Antique Mall - find gift certificates hidden around the store.

• 12 noon-4pm: “Blown Art Exhibit” at Smith County Historical Society, a collection of Dr. Kerfoot Walker and family created years ago by Tyler’s “Easter Egg Lady,” Nell Burnett.

• 3-5pm: Artfix Cultured Studios presents “Intuitive Painting Class” with a free art class. Intuitive Painting is letting go of expectations or fear and allow your painting to evolve based on your heart callings. Allowing the current layer of paint (or other medium) to inform you of what comes next. Embrace your inner creativity and mystery. Let your artistic voice speak and your intuition as an artist grow.

• 6-8pm: Art Exchange at Strada Cafe - Many artists will be under one roof for this awesome nite of music, art, poetry, and self-expression. This is free to the public. Come join the fun and help support local artist and musicians. Any artist can participate, sign up on Strada’s Facebook page.

• 7:30: Solo Recital Presented by East Texas Symphony Orchestra, Evan Mitchell, at Liberty Hall. Tickets are available at the door.

• 8-10pm: Rafael Espinoza and the Rockabilly Band will be at ETX Brewing Co. No cover and all ages are welcome.

• 9pm-1am: Live Music at The Garage Bar - No one under 21 after 8pm. There is a cover charge at the door.

• 9pm-1am: Dallas Dance Band will be at Rick’s on the Square. 21 and older only after 9pm. There is a cover charge at the door.

• Anytime: The self-guided tour of the Half Mile of History is an outdoor, half-mile loop around the square that commemorates significant people, places, or events in Tyler. A digital brochure for the self-guided tour is at ow.ly/s8iD30czlpb.

• 903 Handmade, located at 253 S. Broadway, has unique handmade collections from quality artisans - locals, artists from around Texas, and craftspeople from around the country.

• Artfix Cultured Studios offers a place to view and purchase items from a variety of local artists as well as take art classes.

• Backbone Hair + Beauty, located at 235 S. Broadway, is open 9am-5pm. Come get a stylish new hairdo along with experiencing a Downtown jibe in this hip new hair salon.

They also sell a line of cool t-shirts and hair products.

• Moss: Where Flowers are Fair features local and fairly traded fresh flowers, plantings, locally-made apothecaries, and vintage finds.

• Ridiculously Good Branding and Thread Co. offers a design studio and retail store specializing in branding, print materials, and social media. Their shirts are printed in-house using eco-friendly inks on fair trade shirts with a lot of love. There is always something new and cool to see here.

• The Salvation Army Family Thrift Store, located at 723 N. Broadway, offers the bargain hunter tons of gently used stuff plus a load of bargains.

and kitchen gadgets to electronics.

• Ye Olde City Antique Mall, 302 E. Locust St., offers great treasures, antiques, and a world of memories.

There are usually a few food trucks hanging around Downtown as well so there’s no excuse to leave hungry with all of the dining options because in Downtown you can have your cake and eat it too.

April 11th (7pm): “Marty Haggard: A Tribute to My Dad, Merle Haggard” - Join Marty Haggard, the oldest son of the legendary Merle Haggard, as he pays tribute to his dad through stories and songs.

Marty calls his dad the greatest singer/songwriter in music history. Marty will share stories of the past, about growing up by his dad’s side as he was writing and recording these great country music songs. For ticket assistance, please call (318)658-6780. Tickets are $35.

April 12th (7pm): “Out of the Loop: True Stories about Life in Tyler” - The Tyler Loop presents a night of true stories about life in Tyler and East Texas. Presented by everyday Tylerites in their own words, with the help of local musicians, Tyler Loop will bring you stories that are silly and serious, fun and fearless, and reveal something real about life in the region. They aim to leave you feeling inspired, entertained, and informed, and with the sense that there are many more great hidden stories to discover and share in our beautiful city and beyond.

Inspired by wildly popular national live storytelling events like The Moth, StoryCorps, and Pop-Up Magazine, they are bringing the life-giving, community-building power of stories on stage to Tyler and East Texas. Tickets are $10 at eventbrite.com.

April 18th (7pm): Reel Talk, “Pulp Fiction” Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) are hitmen with a penchant for philosophical discussions. In this ultra-hip, multistrand crime movie, their storyline is interwoven with those of their boss, gangster Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames); his actress wife, Mia (Uma Thurman); struggling boxer Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis); master fixer Winston Wolfe (Harvey Keitel); and a nervous pair of armed robbers, “Pumpkin” (Tim Roth) and “Honey Bunny” (Amanda Plummer). Come watch “Pulp Fiction” as part of Reel Talk, a program created by the Tyler Public Library and Liberty Hall, where attendees can watch timeless classics and discover new favorites, then stay afterward to connect with like-minded people by discussing the film.

April 26th (7pm): Johnny Bush in Concert Texas Country Music Hall of Fame Member and writer of “Whiskey River,” Johnny Bush began performing with a band in 1952 in San Antonio. Soon the band hired a young guitarist named Willie Nelson, and Johnny and Willie became lifelong friends.

Johnny went on to play and sing with Texas legends Ray Price, Bob Wills, and Lefty Frizzell. His solo hits started coming in 1967 with “Undo the Right” and his own version of “Whiskey River.” This is a public rental. Liberty Hall is not in charge of ticketing. Goodman-LeGrand Museum will host these events this month: April 19th (10am-7pm) and 20th (10am-4pm): 2019 Artisans and Flower Market at the Goodman - Partnering with Earth & Time Global Productions, come to the Artisans & Flower Market and purchase local flowers, hand-crafted gifts and décor, paintings, and so much more. Food trucks and live music will be on-site both days. There will be Easter egg hunts held on Friday for the children at 11am and 2pm. For the adults, a Easter egg hunt will be held at 6pm, and the eggs will contain restaurant coupons and other unique prizes. Admission is free.

May 18th (6pm): Whodunit?! At Goodman Museum - Join for a fun evening of delicious food, great company, and an entertaining story. Best part is, you can be in on it! Who knows, you might even be the murderer! Chicago 1893: Rising from the ashes of fires that devastated the city twenty years ago, now a beacon of architectural splendor and a demonstration of industrial ingenuity. You have been invited to dine at the mansion of one of the exhibitors along with a number of other notable attendees. Tragedy strikes when one of your fellow guests enters the dining hall and collapses dead!

The Goodman-LeGrand home was originally built in 1859 as a one-story, four-room house, and established on a nine-acre wooded parcel of land.

In 1940, Sallie Goodman donated the home to the City of Tyler with instructions to maintain it as a museum. A Texas Historic Landmark since 1964, the well-manicured grounds cover almost an entire city block. It was the first property in Smith County listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 2010, it was designated a Historic Site by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

Local Beef Lovers Compete for the title of “Best Burger” at True Vine Brewing

In addition to crawfish, Sola Bread Co. will have their full menu available for those who aren’t a fan of mudbugs. And you can’t do a crawfish boil without a little touch of Louisiana. A portion of the proceeds from this event will be going towards the Tyler Area LSU Alumni Association. These folks help sponsor scholarships for East Texas students to go to school at LSU. They are also donating a portion of the proceeds to Bethesda Health Clinic and The Mentoring Alliance. This event is open to the public (no entry fee) but they are selling tickets ahead of time to make sure there is enough crawfish to last. Tickets are $20 and include 3 lbs. of crawfish as well as corn and potatoes. There’s no better way to spend a Saturday in spring than with cold beer and delicious crawfish. 2019 Rose City Arts & Music Festival Highlights Local Talent

On April 26th (6-10pm) and 27th (10am-3pm), the 1st annual Rose City Arts & Music Festival will be be held. This will be a fun, family-friendly event, featuring food trucks, bounce houses and games, local musicians, local visual artist vendors, and more.

April 20th, and May 18th, Rock ‘n Roll Saturdays will be held featuring two productions: “SpacePark360” (7pm) and “Rock on Demand” (8pm) every month.

“SpacePark360” takes audiences on a wild, immersive ride through the solar system, recreating the experience of amusement park thrill rides - roller coasters, pendulums, inverters, and more.

Seen from the rider’s perspective, “SpacePark360” combines full dome technology with thrill rides to create a heart-pounding experience.

“Rock on Demand” fills the entire 40-foot domed theater with vibrant graphics, completely enveloping visitors in a 360-degree view while the 16,000-watt, digital surround sound system plays rock hits ranging from the Beatles and Rolling Stones to The Doors and Aerosmith. This is a great experience for all ages.

On March 30th, CESSE will have “Science Day: Professor Newton” at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm.

This will be a true STEAM education experience! The wacky Professor Newton opens your students’ minds to the world around them through awesome activities, all involving audience participation. Your kids will learn about gravity, air pressure, fluid dynamics, chemical reactions, and so much more. Professor Newton uses microwave ovens, leaf blowers, and more to show kids science experiments they will never forget. Not only will your students learn scientific principles, they will be taught how to do experiments at home.

LEGO Block Party

Looking for something fun and educational for your child over the summer? Elementary school and middle school students are invited to an out of this world, intense summer camp experience held at the state-of-the-art Center for Earth and Space Science Education. Participants will explore the many qualities and unique features of the Earth, the Moon, the Solar System, and our surrounding galaxy, the Milky Way. Each of the five, half-day sessions will include a planetarium show, outdoor activities (weather permitting), and classroom instruction where students will be exposed to the many facets of Astronomy.

Dates of camps are June 17th-21st and August 12th-16th. This is for ages 8-12. Cost is $178 which includes t-shirt, camp photo, and all supplies.

Summer Camp Registration Is Now Open

Caldwell Zoo is now taking registrations for its hugely popular Summer Camp programs. These sell out super fast so you need to sign up now to get a spot. Sign up for an exciting adventure to learn all about animals and the natural world. These camps are designed to engage both mind and body through hands-on, unique zoo experiences. These camps offer the opportunity to reach kids and inspire them to care about wildlife and wild spaces, and to act to protect them.

Sign your Tiger (4-5 year olds), Lion (6-7 year olds), Zebra (8-9 year olds), or Elephant (10-13

year olds) up for an adventure they won’t forget.

Your registration includes one camp t-shirt, snacks, activities, and crafts or experiments for the week.

Morning Half Day Camps are only for Tigers (ages 4-5 years) and run Monday through Friday from 9am - 12 noon. Afternoon Half Day Camps for Lions (ages 6-7) and Zebras (ages 8-9) run Monday through Friday from 12 noon-3pm. The cost is $115 for non-members and $100 for members.

Full Day Camps for Lions, Zebras, and Elephants ages 6 and up run Monday through Friday from 9am-3pm. All campers participating in Full Day Camps are required to bring a lunch each day. The cost is $225 for non-members and $200 for members.

Zooniversity

Zooniversity is back! Caldwell Zoo’s favorite 3 day, 2 night adventure allows campers to experience the various jobs at the Caldwell Zoo. The Fund for Animals is the largest and most diverse network of animal sanctuaries and rehabilitation centers in the country. Now you have the opportunity to schedule a tour at the flagship sanctuary, the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch, right here in East Texas. This facility is a world-renowned animal sanctuary in Murchison, Texas that was founded in 1979 by Cleveland Amory, author and animal advocate. Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch is located at 12526 CR 3806 Murchison, TX 75778. Tours this month are: April 13th, 27th, May 11th, 25th, June 15th, 29th (9am and 1pm): Ranch of Dreams Tour - You’ll go on an inspirational journey through 1,400 acres of the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch to see and hear about more than 800 domestic and exotic animals that have been saved from lives of neglect and abuse. This bus tour will take you past dynamic enclosures and rolling pasture. Your guide will share a video presentation, and you’ll learn why many of the animals needed to be rescued and came to be at the ranch. While we can’t guarantee sightings of specific residents, you may see Penelope, a pot-bellied pig found wandering down a street after being abandoned; or Midge, a male chimp previously used in hepatitis research. This tour will give insight into the history of this fascinating organization and the diverse species that live there. The sanctuary is not a zoo and is not open to the public other than by small, pre-scheduled, guided tours to respect the peace and privacy of the animals.

Regular tour individual adult tickets are $49, student/active military tickets are $39. Additional under 18 tickets are $20. Family packages (two adults and four children) are $150. You Can Still Rock in East Texas!

It’s the weekend.

You want to go out and unwind from the work week.

You want to hear some live music but want to make sure you have a good time and get your money’s worth in the process.

And you want a show!

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you TEAZUR. The brainchild of founding member Mike Reiner, TEAZUR has been a mainstay on East Texas stages for 13 years and are still going strong.

Through several lineup changes and plenty of challenges along the way, TEAZUR has continually supplied people with their fix of good old fashioned Rock And Roll and all the trimmings that go along with it, and find audiences still wanting more. I sat down with current vocalist/keyboardist Tobie Turner this month to get some insight on how they’ve maintained the magic this consistently for this long.

Johnny: When did TEAZUR first form and what was the original lineup?

Tobie: TEAZUR was formed in 2006 by drummer Mike Reiner, who is the only remaining original member. The original lineup consisted of Mike Reiner on drums, Jon Morrow on bass, John Bedinghaus on guitar, and Jeff Cross on Lead Vocals.

Johnny: What is the current lineup?

Tobie: The 2019 version of TEAZUR is: Founding Member Mike Reiner on drums, Clint McMullen on bass and keyboards, Scott Cothran on guitar, and myself on Lead Vocals and keys.

Johnny: Where was the first gig as TEAZUR? Tobie: TEAZUR’s first show was at Cat’s Place on Hwy 64, east of the loop. I actually had to ask Mikey, because he is the oldest, and only, remaining member that was actually there!

Johnny: How did the name originate?

Tobie: Mike came up with the name and Jon Morrow changed the spelling to what it is today.

Johnny: Did you guys initially decide to focus primarily on 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s rock intentionally or did it just gravitate that way out of what you all preferred to play?

Tobie: We have always wanted to be the band that played music you didn’t hear from every other house band or jukebox when you walked into your favorite watering hole. As much as we love Clapton, Skynyrd, SRV, and Bob Seger, that is pretty much what makes up “The Standards” that local bands always seem to load their setlists with. People still ask us to play tunes from those artists, but I generally tell them we try to stay away from content that you hear everywhere else. If you’re looking for “Freebird” or “Turn The Page,” you’re not gonna find it at a TEAZUR show.

Johnny: What have been some of the consistent challenges you’ve had to deal with as a band over the life of TEAZUR? Tobie: This is another question that would be better suited for Mike to answer, but I know he’d say that the numerous line-up changes the band has gone through in its 13 year existence, and the constant effort to stay fresh with our setlist are the two biggest ones. There are people that come to see us that rarely miss a show. To keep them coming back, we are constantly updating what we play to be able to bring a mix of the favorite classics, as well some of the more popular dance music.

Johnny: How would you say the band has evolved from a performance standpoint over the years? How about musically?

Tobie: From the beginning, TEAZUR has always wanted to stand out and give the people more than just “something for their ears.” Mike added a full light show, fog and backdrops to the stage set that has been a staple for us over the years. When people walk into a venue where we are set up to play that night, they can’t help but notice the stage. To go along with that, we are all very engaging and try to interact with the crowd throughout the show. A couple of things that we do that are different from any other local band you see are: We usually only take one break a night. It’s pretty standard practice for a band to play an hour and take a break. I noticed early on in my tenure with the band, that people generally take the second

break of the night as their cue to head for the exits.

To keep people in the venue, we typically play two extended sets with one break that is a bit longer than you’d normally see a band take. During that break we make ourselves as accessible as possible and visit with as many people as we can. People like the band more when it’s a band of nice guys that are very approachable.

We open every show the way any sporting event or show in the good ole USA should start. (In our humble opinion…) We ask the room to join us in honoring this great nation of ours with the singing of our National Anthem. We feel honored and very blessed to be able to do what we do night after night, and we pay our respects to those that have, and continue to, put themselves in harm’s way so that we have the freedom and liberty to do so.

This is probably the one thing that I am proudest of that we do.

The tradition started at a Halloween show we were playing in 2014 at Barefoot Bay Marina just outside of Pittsburg, Tx. We were all dressed in costume, and backstage before the show. The lights were down, and we were about to open the show with the Night Ranger tune, You Can Still Rock In America. We are all wireless, and were geared up and about to take the stage when I told Mike, “We should stay off stage and sing the National Anthem acapella and go right into Rock In America with a bang!” The guys thought it was a great idea, so I start singing the Anthem. I’ve always used wireless in-ear monitors, which really shuts out the ambient noise. I was about halfway through the song when I realized the entire room was singing with me so loudly, I could hear them coming through the open mics on stage. We exploded onto the stage with Rock In America, and the place went nuts. I told Mike during the break that night, that we should start every show with The Anthem from then on.

We have, and people remember and comment on that one aspect of the show more than anything else we do.

Johnny: About how many shows a month are you guys doing these day?

Tobie: TEAZUR is booked almost every Saturday night, with just a handful of exceptions for 2019. We always try to schedule a week off after we make a circuit of the normal venues we frequent, but it doesn’t always work out. Folks usually see the breaks in our schedule and want us to play their private party, or a festival.

Clint and I also have an acoustic side project called BlakboX where he plays guitar, and I play bass. It’s a very laid back gig with he and I on barstools playing a mix of rock, country, Motown, and whatever else strikes our fancy. Every now and then, a venue wants us to play a full “Plugged-In” show, and we’ll add Mike to the mix and play as BlakboX Plugged-In. It’s NOT a TEAZUR show. LoL We rarely cross over any of the material we do between the two projects.

Johnny: Anything on the radar for 2019 that excites you as a band?

Tobie: We just went through another lineup change at the end of 2018, and brought on my old friend Scott Cothran on guitar. Our previous guitarist was looking for a change, and was very busy in his professional life outside of TEAZUR and decided to move on. I had played with Scott in a start-up band just prior to my joining TEAZUR

in 2012. It was a seamless transition, and we are still currently adding to our ever-growing and expanding playlist. We have hinted at possibly doing some writing later this year. Other than that, we look forward to continuing to bring our brand of Rock & Roll party to the masses in East Texas, and the surrounding region.

Johnny: How much original stuff creeps into the set list?

Tobie: We’re not ashamed to say that we are primarily a cover band. People typically go see live bands to hear them play their favorite tunes. We know where our bread is buttered. The previous 2 lineups of the band had a string of originals. Just before I joined the band in 2012, TEAZUR recorded a full album, and after I had been in the band for a little over a year, and we went through another lineup change, we had started another album, and had a couple of the tunes played on the radio promoting upcoming events, but everyone got busy in their everyday lives, and we never finished it. Anytime someone specifically requested that we play one of our originals, we’d oblige. It’s been a while since we’ve put any of them in the nightly setlist, but if we’re able to find the time, we’d love to write and record some new music. It’s very difficult with everyone’s schedule to find the time to get together and create new music, but that, of course, is at the top of our wish list.

Johnny: What would you say the secret is to staying together like TEAZUR has, and not just playing, but consistently being rated as one of the top bands in the area?

Tobie: I am constantly reminded of how fortunate I am to be surrounded by such quality musicians that constantly work at honing their craft. We know what each other is capable of, and we know what we expect of ourselves, and of each other, every time we take the stage. You never know when someone is seeing you for the first time, so we go out every night and perform like no one in the room has ever experienced a TEAZUR show, and we set out to make the best of first impressions. We take pride in giving every show the same effort, whether there are 10 people in the audience, or 10,000. We owe it to the people that chose to come spend their evening letting us entertain them, as well as ourselves. This is a fun job! We want the crowd to have as much fun as we’re having!

Johnny: How would you describe a Teazur show to someone who has never seen you, but is thinking about coming out for the first time?

Tobie: I’d say that you’re not going to see a local band perform at a local venue. You’re going to a concert. A concert that you’d hope and expect to see at your choice of concert hall or arena from Liberty Hall in Tyler, to Madison Square Garden in New York City. We want and expect the folks that come to see us play to say that very thing to any of their friends or family when they describe what they experienced after it was over and they’ve made their way home after the show: “Those TEAZUR guys put on a Show!” We end every show with me telling everyone, “Thank you for choosing to spend your evening with TEAZUR. We know they’re plenty of great bands out there for you to choose from. Please always be kind to one another,and if you have been drinking, Do NOT Drive! We want to see you all again next time we come back here!”

Cosy Sheridan Performs at Roland’s Next Door, April 12th

Cosy Sheridan has been called “one of the era’s finest and most thoughtful singer/songwriters.” She first appeared on the national folk scene in 1992 when she won the songwriting contests at The Kerrville Folk Festival and The Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

Since then she has released 10 cds, written a one-woman-show, and had her music appear in books and film. She has taught songwriting, guitar and performance workshops at music camps for the past 15 years, including The Puget Sound Guitar Workshop and The Swannanoa Gathering.

She is the director of The Moab Folk Camp in Moab, Utah.

“Elvis on My Mind” Comes to Liberty Hall in Downtown Tyler

Elvis and his music live today because of Elvis Tribute Artists like Andy King (Andreas Stolzenthaler) from Sulzfeld, Germany, and Moses Snow, a local Fort Worth ETA. “Elvis on My Mind” starring Andy King, Moses Snow, and Shake Rattle & Roll opens it’s US/ European tour at Liberty Hall, 103 E. Erwin St., Downtown Tyler, Friday, May 17th at 8pm. The production will have three shows in Texas, two shows in Switzerland, and five shows in Germany.

Andy King’s very authentic voice, like that of the “King of Rock ’n Roll,” has thrilled audiences all over Europe and the United States. When you close your eyes and listen to Andy’s voice, you’ll be convinced the real King, Elvis Presley, is on stage. King, who has been in the ETA World for 15 years, is accompanied by his band of seven years, The Memphis Riders. Andy’s band, one of the leading Elvis show bands in Europe, consists of several top musicians.

In 2017, Andy King & The Memphis Riders were honored with Germany’s trade media award “Artist of the Year,” not limited to ETA but selected from all recording artists in Germany. In January 2019 he was awarded the prestigious “Spirit of Elvis Award” at the European Elvis Championship in the UK. “Elvis on my Mind” takes you on a journey through all of Elvis’ genres. Moses Snow, the fastest rising 15-year-old ETA of the year, starts your journey in the 50’s. Andy King opens his set with the trueto-the-original Las Vegas show based on Elvis Presley’s album “On Stage” and the documentary “Elvis That’s the Way It Is.” The show clearly depicts the triumphant return of Elvis Presley to live concerts after spending most of the 60’s in his film career. The 1970 shows included some classic Elvis hits, but also songs that were not yet associated with The King, such as “Yesterday” (The Beatles), “Runaway” (Del Shannon), “Polk Salad Annie” (Tony Joe White) and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (Simon & Garfunkel). In addition to the usual hits, there is a tasteful selection of classics and rather unknown, yet typical Elvis songs, including blues, gospel, country, and soul.

Shake Rattle & Roll, a national and locally recognized 50 & 60’s tribute show group, kicks off the show with their high energy tunes. The Las Vegas Doo-Wop winners will take you on a ride of your lives with their toe-tappin’, twisting mix of rock and roll, comedy, and rockin’ tunes.

Andy has many accomplishments in the US and Europe. He placed every year since 2016 in the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest sanctioned by Elvis Presley Enterprise, Inc.; the Texas Elvis Festival 2016 & 2017 in Dallas Texas; and Tupelo Elvis Festival 2017. Richard Lee, music director and conductor of the ETSO, continues the season with works representing the American canon of classical music, old (i.e. baroque) music, and new music. The final concert of this season will present a beloved Tchaikovsky concerto and Schubert’s well-known final symphony, “The Great.”

The Juilliard-trained and Grammy-winning Hadelich describes the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto as one of the “most exciting concertos … a very emotional piece full of character.” Hadelich’s goals regarding the performance of this work include “communicating joy and excitement while balancing Mozartian (perhaps Tchaikovsky’s favorite composer) elegance with heart-on-yoursleeve Romanticism.” The concert and the season conclude with the ETSO premiere of Schubert’s final symphony.

The Toadies in Concert

The Toadies will be in concert at Stanley’s Famous BBQ, 525 S. Beckham St., Tyler. This event is sold out.

It’s been 26 years since the Toadies started playing rock music in Fort Worth, Texas. Through lineup changes, shelved albums, member departures, band break-ups, one-off reunions and full-on reformations, the Toadies are an act that has experienced nearly everything. After bursting onto the national scene in 1994 with their breakthrough Rubberneck album, which begat their signature single “Possum Kingdom,” the successful follow-up single “Away” and the immense fan favorite “Tyler,” the Toadies returned to the studio in 1998 with the pressure of trying to match their first album’s success. In 2014, Toadies celebrated the 20th anniversary of Rubberneck by playing the album front to back for the first time ever on a U.S. tour. Johnny Bush

Texas Country Music Hall of Fame Member and writer of “Whiskey River,” Johnny Bush began performing with a band in 1952 in San Antonio. Soon the band hired a young guitarist named Willie Nelson, and Johnny and Willie became lifelong friends. Johnny went on to play and sing with Texas legends Ray Price, Bob Wills, and Lefty Frizzell. His solo hits started coming in 1967 with “Undo the Right” and his own version of “Whiskey River.” This is a public rental.

Red Dirt BBQ & Music Festival

Red Dirt BBQ & Music Festival has proven itself to be one of the most premier and unique music and food experiences in Texas. The festival takes place on the brick streets of the downtown square in Tyler every May, featuring more than 20 of the most celebrated barbecue restaurants in Texas. Music happens for nearly 12 hours on two stages, with the main stage highlighting the biggest names in Texas and Red Dirt Music. Outlaws & Renegades Tours: Travis Tritt & The Charlie Daniels Band

The “Outlaws and Renegades Tour” is coming to the Oil Palace on Saturday, June 29th.

Travis Tritt will perform. A two-time Grammy Award Winner and four-time CMA Award Winner, Tritt’s got five number one hits including “Help Me Hold On,” “Anymore,” “Can I Trust You with My Heart,” “Foolish Pride,” and “Best of Intentions.”

The Charlie Daniels Band will also take the stage. The career of the Charlie Daniels Band spans six decades. They are best known for their numberone country hit “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.”

Daniels is an inductee of the Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Hall of Fame.

The Cadillac Three will also perform. Fronted

by Grammy-nominated songwriter Jaren Johnston, The Cadillac Three have a sound that hovers between radio-ready country anthems, hard-andheavy rock ballads and traditional Southern folk.

The trio performs songs from their latest album, “Legacy,” an album that saw the group strip back to basics.

Uncle Kracker

Country rocker Uncle Kracker will headline this year’s July 4th Fireworks and Freedom Celebration in Longview. Local band Dagnabbit is also scheduled to perform the free concert to be held just before the biggest fireworks show in East Texas. The event will be July 4 at the Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Complex, 100 Grand Blvd.

Other activities are scheduled during the celebration, including rides, bounce houses and other inflatables, a water foam spray area, weenie dog races, motorcycle ride, car show, Family Feud, two entertainment stages, food, beverages and vendors.

This annual event, benefitting the charitable projects of The Junior League of Tyler, will showcase a variety of local eateries who will put their best foot forward with special Rose City Restaurant Week offerings. Pine Curtain Portraits The life impact of Coy Lothrop’s paintings.

By Derrick White “I’ve always believed great art is about life. In retrospect, the opposite is also true: art has made my life great, and it is the people you meet along the way making the enriching difference,” states artist Coy Lothrop, adding, “My work addresses the human condition and records contemporary society, for better or worse, and how growth, emotionality, conflict, and mortality manifest in the human figure and their environments in the most intimate ways.”

Lothrop was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but has lived most of his life in the small towns dotting the piney woods of East Texas. He has worked as a visual designer, illustrator, creative director, and an educator. He is a graduate studio art major at the University of Texas at Tyler. His art presents the viewer with a familiar, current interpretation of the genre of painted portraiture. His portraits address emotional, universal truths and illuminate shared societal issues. Lothrop teaches at Kilgore College as a professor of Advertising and Graphic Design, where he has served and advised for 19 years. “I started at Kilgore College with the dream to be a practicing fine artist showing in exhibitions and selling in galleries. I also took several classes in Photography because I thought being able to capture my reference material would be a great asset in my skill set. I transferred to the University of North Texas, Denton, and studied studio art with an emphasis in painting and drawing, but I also took classes in art history and photography. Due to some issues back home with my father and his health, I returned home, my degree incomplete,” states the artist.

In 2000, Coy began teaching Advertising and Graphic Design at Kilgore College part-time, and in 2011, he went full-time. He considers teaching art to be a dream job. Lothrop informs, “Teaching affords me a lot of free time back into my life. “Lone Star Impressions: Prints By Peregrine Press” Continues on Exhibit

This exhibit will be on display through April 20th.

Founded in 1981 by Mike and Jo Ann Hart with Gerry Lemke, Peregrine Press opened in Dallas as one of the earliest fine art presses in Texas. In operation for over ten years, the press created more than 600 editions by 90-plus artists.

Organized by the Tyler Museum of Art, “Lone Star Impressions: Prints by Peregrine Press” offers a glimpse of their creative output. The exhibition features works by John Alexander, David Bates, Ed Blackburn, Linda Blackburn, Derek Boshier, Brian Cobble, Otis Dozier, Joseph Glasco, Sam Gummelt, Billy Hassell, Robert Levers, Jack Mims, Nic Nicosia, Lee N. Smith III, Al Souza, Earl Staley, Michael Tracy, and Bob Wade.

With the extra time in my day and summers off with a wide open schedule, I decided to return to higher education and pursue my first love, painting and drawing.” Coy Lothrop is currently in the UTT graduate school program working to complete a MFA degree in studio art.

Lothrop’s paintings are dynamic, bold, and immediate enamoring viewers with sumptuous, expressive, and gestural marks of paint coalescing into compositions of exquisite realism. Coy explains, “I try to make brushwork look effortless but really it takes a lot of thought and buildup to arrive at something I’m happy with, so I’m still not there yet. I embrace the expressive qualities inherent in paint. I want to display evidence of the hand and convey a painting is a painting – a work more valuable, in my opinion, than a capture on film and more personal and unique.”

Lothrop adds, “Beyond the material, I am looking to express a human narrative or universal truth all viewers can associate with. Telling a story or presenting a message is important to me. I like to think my work, in its variety of faces, environments, and objects, is a call to action. I attempt, through my formal choices of composition, color, line, and anatomical construction, along with a few key details and implied clues, to generate agents of change out of viewers who would engage the work and seek its story of truth. My desire to generate awareness regarding issues directly affecting the people I serve daily - students, family, or others drives me to make images that matter. So it isn’t strictly portraits I am making, but rather, I like to think I am painting life.”

Coy primarily works in oil paints on wood panels and loves the thick, impasto textures.

Sometimes he will experiment with additional mixed media, usually replacing a historical material with a contemporary substitute, such as replacing gold leaf with the iridescent metallic film of DVDs and CDRs by harvesting it free from the plastic Annual High School Art Exhibition, scheduled for March 31st-May 5th in the TMA’s North Gallery.

This year’s juried competition tops the previous record of 2018, featuring 109 students from a best-ever 20 high-school campuses in Tyler and nearby cities. In addition to the seniorlevel students in the juried competition, eleven sophomore and junior students have entered in the competition in a special “Up & Coming” category.

Four outstanding works selected by the competition jurors, including an overall “Best in Show,” will be presented with “Merit of Honor” awards during the Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony from 2:30-4pm Sunday, March 31st.

Special Events

Special events in connection with current exhibitions include a free First Friday tour April 5th. The first Friday of each month, 11am-12:30pm, the TMA offers a full day of free admission plus guided tours of its spotlight exhibitions.

Family Days will be from 2-4pm Saturday, April 13th. Free admission, interactive art projects, light snacks, and a festive atmosphere for all ages are on the menu for the second Saturday of each month with the Tyler Museum of Art’s Family Day. La Table Des Artistes: Le Cheval

Saturday, April 6th at 7pm, come out for the annual fundraiser La Table des Artistes, the Tyler Museum of Art’s signature spring fundraiser.

Lothrop has always created and has many influences.

He recalls, “As a child I was a maker.

I loved the library where I would pick up nature books and spend hours drawing the wildlife. I think it’s just in my DNA. My mother is a poet and a watercolorist. My aunt, her sister, is a naturalistic oil painter and ceramicist working in functional porcelain. I decided to pursue art as a career when I met a family friend named Darel Hutchison. When he visited, he would bring with him a stack of the most beautiful and interesting figurative drawings of people and their environments. They were realistically rendered in graphite and I could not get enough. I desire to make, and I can’t think of any better job than to initiate things and teach others to make things, like Darel did for me. Art, most importantly, has brought into my life the opportunity to meet and make friends, learn from and be inspired by numerous artistic and creative people throughout UT Tyler Gallery Presents A Master of Arts Student Exhibition:

The University of Texas at Tyler has announced an art exhibition featuring the work of a Master of Arts degree candidate, presented by the Department of Art and Art History.

The exhibition, titled “Objects/ Work” and featuring the artwork of Nora Schreiber, will be held April 8th-19th. A reception and artist talk is scheduled for 6pm Thursday, April 18th.

Schreiber’s exhibition combines mixed-media sculptures, video, photography, and installation to compel viewers to question their surroundings.

Her work represents familiar objects and settings, curiously twisted to show a forgotten side. Her intent is to show the viewer a more open side to daily life.

Coy explains, “An education in fine art can have a certain stigma with parents, and some young, emerging talents can find themselves without the support of their family. It means a long road ahead for the student, one rife with self-doubt and hardship as they try to make their way without solid advice, encouragement, and financial support.

Fortunately, art faculty at most institutions are fantastic mentors to students working their way through an art program. Once you have your body of work, a hard-fought series of art pieces based on years of study and exploration, it has intrinsic value,” adding, “Art, like life, is a struggle. It can be difficult to find your voice. It is hard to find an appreciation for the voice you discover. Making art can be discouraging. We all have a self-critic threatening our confidence. It is hard to manifest a creative thought into the physical world the way you envision.”

TJC April Arts Festival: The Best Ticket in Town

Tyler Junior College, the Tyler Museum of Art and others are again offering a spring arts festival packed with happenings and performances and collaboration between multiple departments during the entire month of April.

The festival is a celebration of Tyler’s Cultural Arts District and the dynamic arts programs at Tyler Junior College that provide rich experiences. This event is a collaboration of Art Club, The Bell Tower Arts Journal, International Education Club, Tyler Museum of Art, and the Art, Music, Theater, Speech, Theatre, Dance, and Visual Communications departments. It is sponsored by Communications and Student Media, English, History and Geography, Humanities and Philosophy, Mathematics, Presidential Honors, Sigma Kappa Delta (English Honor Society), and Creative Services.

Works by students, faculty, and local artists will be displayed in the Art Department Hallway of Jenkins Hall. Winning bids will be contacted after the close of the auction. You do not have to be present to win but it sure helps.

• April 1st-August 1st, “The Beauty of Art and Medicine III” will be at the Garden Level of the Rogers Nursing and Health Sciences Building.

• April 8th-May 2nd, the “Faculty/Staff Art Exhibition” will be shown in the Vaughn Library. This is an art exhibition displaying the many talents of different TJC personnel including folks from campus safety, administration, support staff, non-art professors, and maintenance employees.

Gallery Main Street Continues The College Student Exhibition Gallery Main Street features a new exhibit of original art approximately every eight weeks. Gallery Main Street’s exhibit showcasing the artwork of local college students runs through May 5th. It’s that time of year again! The Dillos open their outdoor diving season with The Annual Underwater Easter Egg Hunt.

Eggs will be suspended from the bottom, so they will be easy to see at about 8-15 foot. The bottom time is about 30 minutes.

There is a $5 fee plus the normal park entrance fee. Lunch will be served at 11:30am with the dive beginning around 3pm.

Tyler Parks and Recreation’s 18th Annual Twilight Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled for Thursday, April 18th at Lindsey Park, located on Spur 364 in Tyler. Festivities will begin at 6pm and conclude with Easter egg hunts on the softball fields.

The egg hunts are categorized by age groups: children with special needs at 6:45pm; children ages 3 to 6 at 7pm; ages 7 to 9 at 7:20pm; and ages 10 to 12 at 7:45pm.

Only one group at a time will hunt. Lights will remain on during all hunts.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Children should bring their own Easter baskets or bags.

The entertainment includes an appearance by the Easter Bunny so bring your cameras to capture the moment. There will also be karaoke, face painting, jumpers, vendor booths, and other fun activities. Concessions will be available for a fee.

Books April 2019 Book Reviews:

A Laugh and 16-YearOld Murder Explored

Happy April - it’s that time of year that all the flowers and trees come back to life and the dead of winter melts away into a fine yellow pollen mist.

I’m always glad to see the longer days and warmer weather. Winter or spring, I read through it all and still enjoy a nice lazy afternoon with my latest coupe.

I get books via my Public Library and read them via the app Libby or OverDrive on my tablet. I also listen to Audio Books through these apps when I travel or struggle through a treadmill workout they help to break up the time and help me focus on something else besides the task before me.

I add titles to my Loans request queue, but like most people who get books on loan for free, I never know when they will become available.

This comes with good sides (they are free, and the library has thousands of books available, so there is never a shortage of available books) and bad sides (sometimes new releases take a bit to become available, and if you are reading a series of books, you may not be able to get them in order or timely).

Because of this, I never know what is going to come in and what my next book will be, but I also get a quick thrill when I see an e-mail come in saying that ‘a book that I requested has been added to my Loans library.’ This month, I was able to read these great books and found myself totally engrossed in both the characters and different plots.

Redding, Ida Bell, Gertie, and Carter team up to fight crime in southern Louisiana. Their antics are comical, and always a light-hearted read.

From the synopsis of the book: Sinful, Louisiana really knows how to throw a party, and it goes all out for Halloween. The week-long celebration kicks off with a maze of horror in the park that is built out of hay bales. And Fortune has the perfect assignment - the executioner. Her scene comes complete with a head block, a hatchet, and a fake body with removable head. It’s the perfect setup…for a crime.

When Fortune returns from break and realizes the body in her scene is a real one and not the prop, she knows trouble is coming. Before she can shake a broomstick, Celia Arceneaux has raised an alarm, and the state police show up to take over the investigation. With Carter on the sidelines and Fortune the prime suspect, Swamp Team 3 sets out to catch a real monster.

It is incredible that this series with its far-fetched premise of an ex-CIA operative living in small-town Louisiana, partnered with colorful much older women who were spies in the Vietnam War, can remain so much fun after the twelve books that came before.

DeLeon’s writing talent can still make me laugh and keep me turning the pages. I find her writing quite fluffy but fun, and always a light hearted entertaining story. I read these books when I need to feel happy, and Fortune, Gertie, and Ida Bell never disappoint.

If you’ve read the series, in this latest installment, Fortune is “out” now as ex-CIA who had been hiding from a foreign arms dealer, using a fake identity as a librarian. She and her partners in mayhem are now running a private investigation business. The team’s first real client is surprising when her deputy sheriff boyfriend quietly hires her to solve the crime. The twist is that the man had died several days before, apparently from natural causes, and his body was stolen from the morgue. Was it murder too? After this many Miss Fortune books, you know that the action will be non-stop, the laughs will be frequent, there will be slapstick, casseroles, and baked goods, and everything will come together in the end.

These are not books that will change your life or the world. But sometimes they are just what you need, and they are always diverting.

Writing humor is very difficult, but Jana Deleon

makes it look easy in this series. You are going to lose your head over this fun book!

“Never Tell” by Lisa Gardner

First, “Never Tell” is the latest in the D.D. Warren and Flora Dane series. This is a great book full of suspense and drama written in Lisa Gardner’s typical “edge of seat” style. This unpredictable thriller puts D.D. Warren and Flora Dane on a shocking new case that begins with a vicious murder and gets darker from there.

Told by three different women who exhibit strengths to admire, this story kept me riveted to the page the entire time. D.D. Warren is a police officer who isn’t afraid to allow civilians to give her a helping hand with a difficult case. Flora Dane is the survivor of a horrific period of abduction and torture who fights every day to remain a survivor, never a victim. Evie Carter has been keeping secrets from her husband, and what she finds when she arrives home after work one day means she will never have the chance to be honest with him.

This book kept my interest focused from the first page to last. The characters in this story are written to be real people, and that’s sometimes a hard thing for authors to do. The information necessary to provide the solution to the crimes is revealed in natural ways so that it feels as if someone is actually finding the information in real time. The investigative forays into the dark web were fascinating to me because I have absolutely no idea how those things work.

Lisa Gardner is doing a masterful job of handling the characterization of Flora Dane. Her character could go very wrong, but Gardner hasn’t let that happen. I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series.
