Pumpjaxe:

Urban Axe Throwing

By Barbara Greenbauer Get ready to throw down… your axe that is! Pumpjaxe is the new East Texas alternative to almost everything you can imagine for fun and sport. The only axe throwing venue of its kind in East Texas, you will be in for an adrenaline, axe-kicking time of competition and fun. Pumpjaxe is locally owned by the father and son duo of Mike and Josh Wilson, themselves aficionados of the high energy urban axe-throwing culture. It’s not a franchise, and Josh will tell you that they do everything from “janitorial, coaching to ax-grinding.” Their proud claim to fame is that Pumpjaxe is an accredited member of the World Axe Throwing League (WATL) and featured on ESPN...and those axe throwing competitors mean business! The axe throwing craze has been around for a while, and has now spread worldwide, with the WATL established in 2017 with members around the globe: Canada, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Brazil, Turkey, Russia, Spain, Netherlands, Hungary, Poland, New Zealand, Slovenia, Indonesia and South Africa. Being part of the WATL means that you can rest assured that everything in the place is held up to the highest safety standards and regulations. The 3,000 square foot space is equipped with 6 lanes and 12 targets, everything handcrafted by the Wilsons to strict specifications. Safety is top of mind and every single person in the door is coached and guided by an “Axepert.” Those instructions include the wearing of close-toed shoes, never leaving the throwing lane with an axe, and putting every axe back in the throwing box between turns. (No passing axes around…ever!) Next comes throwing instructions and there are different ways to do it. The baseball grip is pretty important, with the grip firm, like you would hold a baseball bat. An important element to the grip is ensuring that the blade isn’t rotated to the left or right, but straight so when released, the trajectory is straight on the target. Then you go ahead and bring the axe over your head, like throwing a soccer ball. You can choose whatever style you like, twohanded or single-handed. The axe itself really isn’t heavy or awkward, and only weighs about one and a half pounds. It isn’t as easy as it looks. The group up at the targets tonight is a mixed bag…men and women, friends and family out for a unique evening of competition and laughs. It’s actually the women who are sticking more targets, and as Josh explains, “Anybody can come out and do well. You don’t have to be a super athlete or have tremendous upper body strength.” Pumpjaxe opened the beginning of June and Josh says “60% of our customers have been women and we have a 40% retention rate of folks who try it once and get hooked.” There are some kids hanging around to watch, and the Wilsons go by the rules that kids have to be 11 or older to throw with parent supervision. The actual throw areas are outlined in orange, and the high screens between lanes make it “safer than darts” said Josh. The Wilsons patrol the action constantly, changing outboards and keeping track of throw time. It’s a real adrenaline rush, especially when the axe hits the target and sticks. I gave it a try and it’s a great feeling when you make it stick! Nick and Deanne Williams were throwing against each other, and the action was fierce and competitive. Deanna said, “It’s really a challenge and we both want to practice and get better.” The couple was there to “support local business in Tyler, and we love the easy, fun atmosphere in the place.”

Best Seafood in East Texas!

It’s a sport unlike any other, and Pumpjaxe is already making a name for itself, hosting every kind of gathering, from birthday parties to company events to bachelor/bachelorette parties. One group of guys hit the targets after gifting the “father to be” with a diaper party. You can BYOB, (just wine and beer and no glassware) and your own food as there are lots of tables and places to eat and watch the action. The Wilsons plan on building a bar countertop where folks can get a birdseye view of the throwing. You can buy Pumpjaxe t-shirts and koozies to remember your visit….and there are even Pumpjaxe specialty axes for $30 to be had! Back to the axes…each player gets 10 throws per match. Players compete by throwing their axes at the same time, standing 12 feet behind the target. Participants throw their axes from a 3-foot wide box. The typical stance is a lead foot and a back foot. Both players retrieve their axes simultaneously and scoring commences. Throwers get 6 points for a bulls-eye, 4 points for the blue ring, 3 points for the red ring, 2 points for the green ring and one point for the black ring. Kill shots are the almost impossible to hit small spots on the target, worth 8 points, only on the final throw. If your axe falls out of the target, the throw generates 0 points. (There was a lot of that happening, with accompanying groans!) Walk-ins are encouraged, and everyone gets the same safety and game instruction. Reservations can be made online and a liability waiver is available too and saves time when you get there. Walk-ins are $20 for an hour of throwing and groups of six and more pay $35 for 2 hours of play which includes a private lane and personal coach. Pumpjaxe also has a corporate rate for 30 or more people at $30 per person for 2 hours. Pumpjaxe is all about giving back to the community too, so there is a great Heroes discount of 10% for military, first responder’s doctors and nurses. What a super idea for a birthday, and if you bring 10 or more people, the birthday individual gets in FREE! Take a closer look at the Pumpjaxe logo and you’ll spot an axe adorning the top of a very wellknown sight in these parts, a pump jack working an oil well. Josh said, “We want to be the spot for East Texans to relax, have an alternative to dinner and a movie, and enjoy some great competition.” Plans are in place to begin fall league teams and even the opportunity to host a Fantasy Football Draft party including two hours of draft and axe throwing. Pumpjaxe also hosts Thursday night Ladies Nights with a 10% discount. Bring out your inner lumberjack and throw down at Pumpjaxe! Pumpjaxe is located on Old Jacksonville Highway, at 15902 CR 165, Suite C, (just south of Bruno’s Restaurant). You can call them at (903)630-6666 or make your reservation (usually two days notice in advance) at pumpjaxe.com. They can be found on Facebook at pumpjaxe. Walk-ins are welcome Monday-Thursday 3-9pm, Friday 3-11pm Saturday 12 noon-11pm, and Sunday 12 noon7pm. Reservations are available Monday-Thursday from 3-9pm, Friday 3pm-12 midnight, Saturday 12 noon-12 midnight, and Sunday 12 noon-7pm. Groups of 6 or more can schedule anytime from 8am throughout the day. Check out their FB page for special promotions that are happening all the time!

Music A Little Bit Old School:

Wes Brown By Johnny Griffith

Back before the days when Country Music radio was dominated by songs about beach parties, overprocessed vocals, and music that sounds like it should be on a pop station, you could turn on the radio and hear songs that told great, classic stories that stuck with you for years. Songs like “The Gambler,” “Seven Spanish Angels,” “The Dance,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Don’t Close Your Eyes,” and others that get passed down from generation to generation because of the relatability of the substance. Wes Brown is not only a throw-back to those artists, singing and writing songs with substance and texture, the obstacles he’s had to overcome in life certainly provide plenty of inspiration for the next generation of great country songs. In between gigs around East Texas this month, I sat down with Wes and talked a little about his background and what keeps him motivated: Johnny: When did you first get interested in music and what was the catalyst for that? Wes: I’ve always had an interest, as far back as I can recall. I vividly remember listening to the 90’s power country with my mom. That was when you could turn on the radio and hear Garth, The Judds, Alan Jackson, Travis Tritt, Collin Raye etc... The real defining moment for me, though, was when at 25 I was in an 18 wheeler rollover which left me paralyzed for three months before regaining motor control in my legs. With that downtime, I picked up a guitar and taught myself to play. Johnny: When did you decide to take music past the hobby level and try to make it more? Wes: Honestly after my second divorce. I didn’t have a really good support base, as far as music was concerned, in that marriage and to that point I had played with the idea of getting myself out there, but as a father, family is always first. It has always stuck with me that she would always tell me to “be happy with being famous in a small town.” After the marriage ended I knew it was time to go all or nothing.

Johnny: Are you primarily playing solo gigs or do you ever collaborate with other musicians? Wes: I’ve mainly done solo acoustic and stood in with existing bands. But I have collaborated and have been mentored by some of the best in Texas like Mark Shepard Hill and Donnie Dodson while rocking out with Jonathan Allan, Jenn Ford, and Jessica Morris. Stay tuned though, some big news is on the horizon! Johnny: Your original music feels like it’s a little Keith Whitley, a little Alan Jackson, and a little Toby Keith. How would you describe it and how did your style evolve? Wes: First, thank you, those are three artists I’ve always admired and respected beyond compare. I would say that my music started with the soul of Whitley and Jackson and was fueled by the attitude of Toby Keith as it has progressed. All three have been major influences, but Whitley by far the most. I want to make you feel every ounce of emotion in my music while knowing exactly where I stood when I wrote it. Johnny: There are plenty of country artists floating around East Texas these days. What do you feel makes your particular flavor just a little different? Wes: Well, my baritone voice has always seemed to make people look up to see where it’s coming from. I know that my style is still evolving as I try and perfect it, but in short, I hope that the love, passion, and rawness I try to bring shows through most. I think we can all connect with passion. Johnny: About how many shows a month are you playing on average and where would you like to see that number get? Wes: Currently I’m booking about 6-10 shows on a good month but, honestly, I want to be doing this every night! Johnny: What have some of the biggest challenges been so far? Wes: It’s always tough trying to break into new areas. It was tough when I started trying to gig, only playing when the juke box wasn’t playing. After that, it was tough when I started trying to get my name into Longview to book venues. Then in Shreveport, Nacogdoches, Tyler, etc. New areas breed competition when you’re not amongst friends. But, like all of my heroes, I cut my teeth on a bar stool with a hollow body in hand. I can always prove my worth there. Johnny: When the going gets tough as a musician, what keeps you motivated?

Wes: Man, it gets frustrating, tiresome, and lonely at times, but what makes me push is the thought that when I can’t play anymore and my “good years” are gone, my kids will take it as a lesson. Regardless of if I ever go past the borders of Texas with my sound, they’ll see that Daddy took a chance and chased his dream. Hopefully, it leaves them no excuse to sit idle. Johnny: What has been your most memorable gig to date? Wes: Hands down, November 19th, 2018. That’s the day I met my wife. She was stunning in her black scrubs trimmed in pink. I’ll always have to give a shout out to the VFW in Carthage for hosting me that night! Johnny: What’s your proudest accomplishment so far in your career as a musician? Wes: To date, I’m proud that I’ll soon have two of my originals radio-ready. I was in the studio with Chad Mauldin of Mauldin Productions last month cutting them, due in no small part to one of my best friends John Lawless. Johnny: What’s your favorite cover song to play? What’s your favorite original right now? Wes: My favorite cover is “Don’t Close Your Eyes” by Whitley. That one just sticks with me. I’m torn on my favorite original so I’ll split it between “Might Be a Six” and “Time and a Steady Hand.” Johnny: What’s on the horizon in 2019? Wes: I’m steadily booking new venues and trying to branch out farther from home. Towards Tyler, South Texas, South Louisiana etc... I’m looking past county lines, but there will be more big news coming soon with another East Texas artist! Follow Wes Brown at facebook.com/ TheWesBrownMusic/

It’s Only Rock & Roll But I Like It:

Post Profit By Johnny Griffith

One of the perks of this gig is getting to listen to a lot of really good music from some fantastic musicians as I prep for these interviews. It’s always fun to catch someone early on and watch them as they develop, grow their catalog and fan base, and a few of that break out from behind the pine curtain to go on to develop fans in other regions. This month I get to interview some guys who’ve actually been on my radar for several months now: Post Profit. Post Profit is a Longview-based band made up of Matt Jackson and Nick Hawner on guitars and vocals, Zack Hicks on drums, with Jordan Conley on bass guitar, and these guys are really, really good. Playing loud and energetic, they have a big modern rock sound that keeps you engaged, grabs you and won’t let you go. With some significant shows under their belt and a growing list of originals for their loyal fans, Post Profit is poised to be the next band from this area to gain traction in places like Dallas and Austin. We sat down with them this month to get to know them a little better: Johnny: How did you all individually get started in music? Matt: I started out with my dad showing me rock music at a very young age. I was inspired by him to start playing guitar. He showed me a few chords on the guitar when I was 3 years old, and I took it and ran with it. I locked myself up in my room through most of high school playing guitar. In 6th grade, I joined the marching band and played the snare drum on the drumline. In 2008 I joined my first band which was called United Glory, where I played guitar and sang. That band is what helped me sort of learn how to become a frontman! Nick: My Mom has exposed me to great music all of my life. She tried to learn guitar when I was about 4 or 5 years old and when she gave it up, I adopted her 1979 Les Paul as my own. When I was 7, my parents bought me a drumset, and in 6th grade, I joined the marching band and played on the drumline. In high school, I would go to shows where Matt was playing and really got inspired to join a band. In 2014 I joined a band called Twenty West and started playing shows and playing solo on the side. Once I met Zach and was reconnected to Matt, Twenty West broke up and Post Profit was born. Jordan: I started playing keyboard when I was about 6 years old, and I learned melodies and notes by ear. I joined marching band in 6th grade and played saxophone which I picked up really fast. In 8th grade, I was first chair in the high school marching band. I really enjoyed the band through high school, and when I started college I got my first guitar. I started keys and then switched to playing bass in our youth praise band when I was a junior in high school. I eventually joined the college marching band and the music program, graduating with my associate's degree. I met Matt in some of my classes in college. Zach: My uncle played drums and had a drum set at his house. I started playing them when I was about 2-3 years old. I got my own set when I was 4 years old and I started playing drums in church when I was 11. I joined marching band in 6th grade and played trombone at first, then went to drumline. I was put in the high school marching band in 7th grade and played the snare drum. In 2012 I fronted my first band called Zodiac Braves. I took a few years hiatus after Zodiac Braves, then formed Post Profit with Nick and Matt, and the rest is history. Johnny: How did you guys meet? Post: Matt and Zach have known each other most of their lives, and Nick starting doing open jams with them when they met through an ex-girlfriend. Those open jams turned into us having a few solid songs we would always play. Then those songs turned into a setlist that we would practice pretty much every day. We formed a band and started booking shows! Jordan would come to almost all of our shows and eventually became our bass player! Johnny: What about the name? What is the significance behind the name Post Profit and how was that born? Post: Post Profit is kind of a play on words. It has many meanings depending on how you think about it. The word “Profit” could be interpreted as “Prophet”. Or it could mean “after the money”. It’s

ultimately up to the listener to decide what it means to them. Johnny: When and where was the first Post Profit show? Post: Our first real show outside of a jam was Halloween 2017 at a venue called 9muses in Tyler, TX Johnny: How would you describe your typical show to someone who hasn’t seen you guys? Post: Energetic, engaging, loud, and unforgettable. Johnny: How many originals do you have at this point? Post: We are currently wrapping up our EP which will have about 6 original songs on it. Johnny: When I listen to your originals, I hear threads of lots of bands I enjoy: Breaking Benjamin, Rage Against The Machine, Foo Fighters, maybe some Muse in there as well with a big sound, great vocals, and great guitars. But that’s what I hear... how would you describe your sound and your biggest influences? Post: That’s about right! We are going for a modern alternative sound. Something that's familiar yet has a new edge to it. Some of our favorite bands include Foo Fighters, Nothing But Thieves, Thrice, Radiohead, Deftones, Incubus, Citizen, Highly Suspect, Red Fang, Royal Blood. Johnny: If I’m correct, Post Profit has a couple of singles and accompanying videos you’ve recorded. Anything you learned from that process that’s helped you grow as a band? Post: We just recently finished filming our first “real” music video. It is a surreal process, to be honest. We learned not to take ourselves so seriously, you know? We are a goofy group of guys that love to have fun, and we want to show our fun side to people. Whether it's making a video or playing a show, we know that our energy can translate to the audience. If we are having the time of our lives, it's easier for our audience to cut loose and enjoy themselves in the same way. It's all about bouncing good energy back and forth. Johnny: Post Profit does some killer covers in addition to your original stuff that is really all over the spectrum, from Post Malone to Chris Stapleton. What are the individual favorite covers that you do? Post: Some of our favorite covers would be “I'm Not Made By Design” by Nothing But Thieves, “Out of the Black” by Royal Blood, “Seratonia” by Highly Suspect, and “Man of Constant Sorrow” by the Soggy Bottom Boys. Johnny: About how many shows a month are you booking? Post: Usually between 8-12 shows per month. Johnny: What’s the farthest you’ve traveled for a show to this point? Post: The farthest show Post Profit has played from home was about 4 hours away in the Galveston area. Johnny: You have had some pretty cool opportunities in the last two years for some amazing shows. What would you say the most memorable has been so far? Post: Some of the coolest things we have done would include opening for Filter at the last InkLife Tour, opening for Drowning Pool and getting to meet and become good friends with another band called To Whom It May, playing the So What Music Festival in Houston TX, and opening up for Picturesque in Deep Ellum. Johnny: What are some “must-see” shows coming up for the band the rest of the year? Post: Definitely Downtown Live in our hometown of Longview, TX, August 2nd, 2019. We are opening for A Killer’s Confession at Clicks Live in Tyler, TX, August 16th, 2019. Post Profit is also very excited to announce we will be playing in Downtown Tyler on the Square, November 8th, 2019 for UT Tyler Patriot Nights. Exploring Long Summer Days:

Bob Mauldin By Johnny Griffith

Bob Mauldin is a man of many hats. The East Texas native has taken on many roles since his childhood days in Van Zandt County. Over the years Bob has been a radio DJ, television host, producer, and media specialist to name a few, but the one thing he would say he’s always been is a musician. Growing up playing outdoors in the Colfax community, Mauldin cultivated a love of the country, spending most of his time outside until discovering music in his early teens. Once bitten by the bug, Bob created a little “studio” space in his bedroom and devoted most of his spare time to developing his talent and creating music, which would plant the seeds that would eventually grow into his passion. Fast forward several years and Bob has just released his latest album “Summer Days,” and is currently booking dates in support of the release. We caught up to Bob to get more of his story and some insight into the new recording: Johnny: You've been known around East Texas for years as a radio personality. How did you originally get started on that path? Bob: When I was a teenager in the little home studio, I would make tapes for my friends of me hosting "radio shows" where I played records and introduced the artists. From one of those tapes, I got my first real radio job at a little AM station in Canton at the age of 16. Soon I decided to try my hand at full-time radio in Tyler. Surprisingly, I got a job at 101.5 KNUE and went on from there, hosting several radio shows over the years. Johnny: You've got to have thousands of memories from that era but is there anything that stands out as particularly cool? Bob: I had the opportunity to meet and work with stars, many of them before they were household names. Back when Keith Urban was just getting started as a solo artist, I attended a showcase of his in San Diego. I remember at the dinner where we were supposed to get acquainted with him, several of the other DJs and I were starstruck by Marion Ross (the mom from Happy Days) eating at the table right behind us. She had consumed a few glasses of wine that night, so she was in a great mood and very happy to take pictures with us. Most of the radio folks had completely ignored Keith until the night of his showcase performance, where he blew us away with a show in a little club there. After that, he took off. My favorite young artist was Kacey Musgraves. I used to coordinate and host talent shows around East Texas for various promoters. I always loved to hear Kacey on those shows, especially when she started writing her own stuff. I would play her songs on the air because I liked them, and back then we had the freedom to share music we thought was good. I remember wishing that the judges on those shows would pay attention to Kacey's writing ability I feel like the success that Kacey has had recently is far overdue and very well deserved. If you ever find a CD entitled "Wanted: One Good Cowboy," GET IT! Some of Kacey's earliest writing. Johnny: How did you transition from radio to television to being the host of “Expedition Texas?” How many episodes have you produced of that now?

Bob: Radio changed a lot over the years and after it dried up for me, I found myself doing PR work and focusing a lot more on music. I was playing music quite a bit, I had a band and we were working at least two or three shows a month. Then, I had the idea for “Expedition Texas.” I had worked in TV part-time before and knew how to create a show. I shot a pilot and quickly found interest from TV stations. I told my band, "Go home and I'll call you if I need you"...I never did call! I began producing and hosting “Expedition Texas” in 2012 and I've been working on it ever since. Johnny: Okay let's switch gears and get to the music. When did you first develop an interest in playing/performing music? Bob: It started at a very early age. As a very small child, my parents tell me I'd climb up on a table or a stool and sing for people at gatherings. As a teenager, I was interested in writing songs mostly. The performing part grew out of that but didn't really switch into high gear until I started getting some airplay on some of my songs. Johnny: Who were your early influences? Bob: Early on it was the country-rock music of Michael Nesmith. If you're not familiar, look up his early 70's work with The First National Band. This was after he left The Monkees - he was back to being a starving artist, and he was creating music that he wanted to create. Johnny: When was the point you kind of stepped back and said, "Hey, I think I'm decent enough to do this as more than just a hobby?" Bob: I was playing a show with another band and was performing my song, “Baby.” It was the first song of mine to get decent airplay. At this one particular show, I looked down at the front row and there was a group of people singing along with every word. It was very flattering and certainly lit a fire under me. Johnny: Was country always what appealed to you the most or did you play around with a few other styles in your formative years? Bob: I grew up on country music. I'm pretty much "country" through and through. I've often told people that even if I suddenly joined a metal band they'd probably end up sounding country. I just can't help it. It's who I am. Johnny: What have been some of the challenges over the years with juggling radio/tv/music/family? Bob: Time! My interest shifts so much. Sometimes I think I wear my loved ones out with constant new ideas and new ventures, but I stay true to the ones that earn a living for my family. I keep a day job. I focus a huge amount of attention on “Expedition Texas” and that will never change. I've been very blessed to be able to dabble in what interest me. Johnny: You just released a new album "Summer Days" on June 3rd. Where did you work on the album and how has the process for you evolved since your first foray into recording? Bob: I've recorded music for a long time. I had several small releases before “Van Zandt County Line” in 2011. That album was promoted to Texas radio and we had some success with it. It was very much following a formula that worked for other artists. “Summer Days” is different. I recorded all original songs that I wrote. It led me to express things more deeply and in a way that I feel is more "me." Since I'm a little weird, so is this album, but these are the most honest, personal songs I've ever written. Johnny: What was the inspiration behind the new album? Bob: Life. Every song comes from some experience I've either had personally or been close to over the last 10-20 years. There are songs

½ , grew up speaking German and English at the same time, and I am still fluent in German today. My family was in the horse-trading industry in the 70’s, buying horses from a ranch in between Big Sandy and Gilmer, TX, about 1,000 acres total. We eventually bought the ranch and that is where I grew up. It was a boy’s paradise, romping around the land without a care in the world. I went to school from K-12 at Big Sandy ISD, then the family sold the ranch in 2001 and I subsequently moved to Tyler. I attended TJC and eventually graduated from UT Tyler with a Communication/Marketing degree. I met my wife at TJC and we started dating in 2003. We got married in 2005 and now have four Not Waiting On The World To Change: children, Zoe 11, Ava 9, Maximus 7, and Gabriella 8 months. on this album that were completed even before the last album in 2011, but because of how personal they were, I left them out of that project. Every song on “Summer Days” is real. If I didn't live the experience personally, I at least witnessed it, and I share those stories on this album. Johnny: Any songs that just grab more of you than the others on "Summer Days?" Bob: “Out of Time” is significant. I'm sure people will listen to that and think, "What's wrong with you, dude?" I actually had the idea for that song in a dream, but never did much with it because it seems so negative...but then I had an uncle who was on his deathbed and facing the end of his life. He did it with such courage and really focused on making his last days pleasant. I ended up reworking the song with my wife and recording it just in time for the album. “Out of Time” ended up being my favorite song on the album and it's dedicated to the memory of my uncle Lennie Hale, Jr. who passed away the night I recorded the vocals for the song. Johnny: You've put together a new band to tour in support of the album. Who are you sharing the stage with? Bob: For all our upcoming shows, I'm working with JD Moss on guitar, Kevin Durrant on drums, and Perry Thompson on bass. Johnny: What can a first-time fan expect at a Bob Mauldin show? Bob: It's super laid back. I do play a lot of my songs, but after spending so much of my life as a country DJ, we do drop in some fun old country songs. Johnny: Any upcoming shows on the radar that have you excited? Bob: Camp Street Cafe in Crockett is going to be a fun one. It's a historic place and a comfortable, relaxed setting. Also, in October, we’re booked close to home in Lindale at Texas Music City. Johnny: What does the rest of 2019 look like and any new projects on the horizon? Bob: In August, we begin shooting our fall season of “Expedition Texas.” We were picked up by Heartland TV Network this spring, so it's going to be our first new season nationwide. I'll be playing some dates as time allows, but I want to encourage everyone to pick up the new album on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, and everywhere else music is sold. Follow Bob Mauldin at facebook.com/bobmauldinmusic and bobmauldin.com.

“It’s cheaper than therapy” which I believe is true. Johnny: Did you have any early mentors that really pushed you or inspired you to stay with it? Patrick: Yes, my elementary music teacher, Mrs. Eckeberger, was always so encouraging. I sang in the school show choir - yes, you heard that correctly. We went to show choir competitions. I won Best Male Vocalist. She always pushed me to be a better singer. In high school I had a youth director tell me my talent had no bounds and that I was going to do something big with music one day. That stuck with me and made me all the more passionate. Johnny: When did you really start thinking about music being more than a hobby? Patrick: Always. Seriously, music has never been a “hobby” for me; I’ve always taken it seriously, but with passion and a desire to have fun when I play. Johnny: What have been some of the challenges you’ve experienced trying to realize music as a livelihood? Patrick: Finding my voice and sound. It is easy to emulate others, and I do that from time to time with covers, but I always try to put my “twist” or interpretation on the song. But I think a lot of musicians, myself included, needed to be told early on: Be yourself, there is only one of you, sing with your voice, play your style, embrace it. Johnny: How would you describe your music? Patrick: You get what you see/hear. I like to sing every note as if it were my last. There is a lot of sweat, awkward dancing (by me) but a full-throttle sound. We are folk-rock/Americana, but we like to surprise you with other influences too. Johnny: How much of the music you perform is original versus cover songs? Patrick: I’d say it varies, depending on how long the set is, but can vary. It just depends on the gig and if its a solo or full-band gig. Johnny: I like to ask all the musicians I interview what their most memorable gig has been so far, so what’s yours? Patrick: I’d say last fall - It was raining cats and

dogs, nothing we could do about it, we were playing at True Vine, a full band show, we had an amazing rehearsal and were ready to bring it, and then the rain came. First thought was well, we play the same for 5 or 500. We had around 200 + folks show up, singing along to the covers and soaking in the originals - it was a lively crowd. I always love the unexpected goodness that happens from time to time. Johnny: What’s the farthest you’ve traveled to play a show so far? Patrick: Wisconsin. Granted at the time I was living there, but for a Texas boy, it was different. Johnny: Are you primarily a solo act, or do you ever collaborate with other musicians? Patrick: Primarily full band, drums, guitar, violin, bassist, lead player...I would love to add some keys to the band eventually. Johnny: East Texas is known for having an embarrassment of riches when it comes to musicians. What do you feel makes this area just a little different from everywhere else? Patrick: I think East Texas truly has a mentality of, “we can do anything.” Not in some narcissistic way, but we will try and if at first, we don’t succeed we will try again. We are resilient. Most ETX folk are kind-hearted and will give you the shirt off their back. I think we have a lot of stories to tell and it comes out in music. Johnny: What’s on the immediate horizon? Patrick: I’m looking to produce a 6-song EP. We’ve got the single “Breathe Easy” which is a song I recently wrote about both watching my Dad fight, and eventually lose, a battle with cancer -(he passed in January) and the birth of my daughter who was born December 3rd. It talks about the chaos of life, the ebbs, and flows of goodness and bitterness, and the fact that we can all “Breathe Easy” and not take ourselves so seriously. Kindness is free, and if we live in it, it’s easy to give to others. Follow Patrick at facebook.com/plissnermusic.

It’s hard to believe, but we’re just a few weeks away from the first day of school for many East Texas students. That’s why health professionals are urging parents to get their child caught up on vaccines before they head back to class. NET Health is encouraging families to make appointments now, before lines get long. Texas state law requires children entering kindergarten through 12th grade to be vaccinated against childhood diseases to enter public or private schools. “Those who are like the 7th graders, those who are 11 years old, they’re required to have their Tdap, their varicella, meningitis vaccine, as well as the Hepatitis A. Plus, as the concern for measles continues it is important to make sure your child is protected.” To make it easier on families, health departments across the area are hosting health fairs ahead of back to school. Health professionals also recommend children with medical exemptions to plan ahead. Medical contraindication is different but that’s through your doctor but they need to do it now if they’re going to do it so they’re prepared when school starts. If you plan to head to a health fair around East Texas, you’ll want to make sure to bring your child’s vaccination records and up to date insurance information. NET Health NET Health offers immunization services to all age groups on a walk-in basis. No appointment is necessary. NET Health is located at 815 N. Broadway, Tyler (903)510-5604. Art

Luminary:

James Robert Pace

Inside the Artist’s Studio:

Pay attention to that man behind the curtain,

Derek Frazier By Derrick White

“I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, ‘If this isn’t nice, I don’t know what is.’” – Kurt Vonnegut. There are a lot of things to be happy about here in East Texas, especially in the visual arts. I want to introduce you to Derek Frazier to again highlight a member of the gem of a museum, the Tyler Museum of Art. If it isn’t nice, I don’t know what is. Derek is the museum’s behindthe-scenes preparator (an art handler working with lighting, art objects, and all aspects of installations and deinstallations). Frazier earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology and ecology from the University of Texas at Arlington, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in art and a Masters of Arts degree in English literature from the University of Texas at Tyler. He also has graduate hours taking sculpture, art, ichthyology (fish science), limnology (lake science), and civil engineering. Derek Frazier is truly a contemporary Renaissance man of numerous talents, with a wealth of knowledge and a loyalty to accuracy. He states, “I’ve always reveled in our species’ creativity, whether it’s in science, the humanities, or just an old man sitting on a backwoods porch whittling. I’ve been to 40 American states, 6 Canadian provinces, and Europe twice; everywhere I go, I seek out the places not listed in books and the people who live there. Everyone has a story and a perspective on the world, and museums are just about the only place most of us can experience times and places far removed from our own.” He continues, “Good art, both visual and literary, brings me a wider understanding of cultures unfamiliar to me, helps to define the culture in which I live, and strengthens my compassion for people who may be marginalized or deemed inconsequential by our society at large.” As an art student Derek was interested primarily in sculpture and mixed media, drawn to their physicality. “My favorite techniques for making things involve cutting, chopping, burning, and staining paper with coffee and wine. When I started my Master’s degree I began writing. I’ve written a few novels and have had short stories, flash fiction, and poetry published in literary journals half a dozen times or so. Right now I focus my creativity on presenting visually striking and informative exhibitions. I want people to be drawn into the galleries with intriguing lighting and precisely installed work,” Frazier says. And draw people into the galleries he does, successfully. The installations and the lighting of the exhibitions at the Tyler Museum of Art are outstanding, meticulous, and equivalent to world class museums. Derek explains, “Before installation begins, I spend an hour or so in the empty gallery, brainstorming about the best way to make the art shine. One of the most important elements in a good exhibition is the lighting. I always go through the same steps: first I come up with a general idea, and then we start placing fixtures to see if it’s going to work. In the corner of the gallery I always have what I call my thinking chair, and at this point I spend a lot of time sitting there and working out problems or coming up with new ways to illuminate (both literally and figuratively) the work. Then we go around at least three times more and tweak the lights. The final step is to fine tune everything. The process takes three to five days, and I often start over more than once.” Derek adds, “I’ve hung more than 1100 frames for the museum, so I really enjoy installing work involving something beyond measuring and setting them on hooks. The Candyce Garret exhibition featured large stone sculptures in the gallery and around the Tyler Junior College campus which was fun, and so was lighting the Legos and Dale Chihuly (glass) exhibitions. Our installation crew and I (our 22 • EGuideMagazine.com

registrar, Leah Scott, and our interns) do the 100 things in the gallery no one will notice. An example is from the recent Leticia Huckaby show: we hung an exceptionally large piece on the wall and it was perfectly, precisely centered. That was exciting and satisfying, even though no one besides us ever noticed.” It is this invisible craft that makes a positive impact on the audience’s experience of viewing artwork. Derek states, “I think social media and the Internet blur the lines between local, regional, national, and world cultures, which I am sorry to see. There are some Texas artists who still draw inspiration from the world immediately around them, but large galleries and even larger museums are affecting more and more of our artists. I respect Texas artists like James Surls (modernist, organic sculptor), William Montgomery (central Texas painter and printmaker), and Chance Dunlap (TJC art professor and sculptor) who seem to be less inspired by New York galleries than most. As far as new media and trends go, I expect to see more recognition of graffiti and photography. A selfie with a filter doesn’t qualify as fine art, but a hundred selfies combined into one work might.” Some of the artists Derek Frazier finds inspiring are Louise Bourgeois (large-scale sculptures and installations), Richard Long (sculptor and land artist), Pip ‘n’ Pop (psychedelic candy mountains), Titian (Renaissance artist of the Venetian school), Nancy Graves (sculptor, painter, printmaker, and filmmaker), Donald Judd (minimalist sculptor), and Paula McDermott (TJC art professor and organic sculptor). In discussing the growing art scene of East Texas Derek responds, “Tyler is slowly beginning to support the arts, which is a good thing for everyone in our community. I am especially impressed with a local group of artists called East Texas Creatives, who seem to be driving this trend. I wouldn’t call it a renaissance of art yet, but these artists and those who support them definitely are carrying the arts forward in a positive and meaningful way. Right now there are a few individuals and businesses doing the lion’s share of supporting local art, which is to be expected at this point in the process of assimilating art into the community. We are at a potential turning point: support can grow or it can fade, and only the community and groundbreakers can determine the future of visual art in Tyler.” So it goes.

Legendary East Texas visual artist James Robert Pace is the heart of influence in the artistic spirit of the Tyler area and has been for over three decades. An exhibition honoring James Pace’s extensive, influential, and brilliant art and his lasting legacy opens Monday, August 26th and will remain on view through Friday, October 4th at the Meadows Gallery at the University of Texas at Tyler’s Cowan Center, located at 3900 University Blvd., Tyler. A reception with the artist will be held Saturday, September 14th at 6:30pm. An exhibition catalogue will be available. James Pace is a recently retired Distinguished Professor of Visual Art at The University of Texas at Tyler, where he has taught since 1985. He holds a Master of Fine Art degree from Arizona State University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Oklahoma. Pace was appointed to the Oge’ Professorship in Visual Art, the White Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching, and received the Chancellor’s Council Teaching Award while teaching at the University of Texas at Tyler. He has exhibited his work nationally and internationally since 1976 and has received numerous awards for his paintings, drawings, prints, and mixed media work. He maintains an

active studio practice in the forest of East Texas, where he lives with his artist wife, Philana Oliphant, poet daughter Aza Rene’ Pace, and an ever-changing number of rescued dogs. “Like most people who practice art making, I’ve done so for as long as I can remember. I’m sure most people find some kind of early support through family and friends, and thereby experience some type of selfactualization. I did, still do,” states Pace, adding, “Trained in printmaking, painting, and drawing, I always thought those were my media interests. But, one day, while working on a large canvas on the floor of my studio, I inadvertently dropped a piece of paper on a painting. The experience brought a flood of memory of long forgotten understanding. I knew mixed media was my way of finding a full voice of aesthetic consideration.” Dedicated to the visual art spirit of East Texas and to seeing it prosper and grow, as well as garnering the statewide and national attention it deserves, Pace hopes his newly enlarged and renovated studio space becomes a place for our community of artists and thinkers to congregate. He hopes to facilitate a more cohesive, yet diverse arts community. “This is about helping, in whatever ways we can, the next generation of East Texas artists,” states James Pace.

This Month at Tyler Museum of Art:

“Floating Life: Mississippi River”

The Tyler Museum of Art (TMA) is located at 1300 S. Mahon Ave. on the Tyler Junior College main campus. Regular TMA hours are 10am-5pm Tuesday-Saturday, and 1-5pm Sunday. The Museum is closed Mondays. For more info call the museum at (903)595-1001, tylermuseum.org, or email info@ tylermuseum.org. “Floating Life: Mississippi River Drawings by Liz Ward,” Through August 25th The Tyler Museum of Art explores the mystique of the South as seen through the eyes of a Texas talent with its next major exhibition, “Floating Life: Mississippi River Drawings by Liz Ward.” The show continues through August 25th in the TMA’s North Gallery. Organized by the TMA and curated by Caleb Bell, “Floating Life” is the first large-scale museum exhibition of Mississippi River works by Ward, a San Antonio artist and professor of art and art history at Trinity University, whose work is largely informed by natural history and the environmental crisis. The exhibition spotlights pieces from two recent bodies of work: “Ghosts of the Old Mississippi” and “Veritas Caput.” The works from “Ghosts of the Old Mississippi” are based on geological maps of the river’s ancient courses and inspired by the artist’s childhood memories from South Louisiana, where her greatgrandfather spent a career as a riverboat captain. Pieces from “Veritas Caput” focus on the search for the source of the river by various explorers. “Texas Birds: Works by Frank X. Tolbert” Through August 4th The Tyler Museum of Art closes out the summer season with the last few days of a visual celebration of the avian species that fly the skies over the Lone Star State in the new exhibition “Texas Birds: Works by Frank X. Tolbert 2.” The show continues through August 4th in the TMA’s Bell Gallery. Organized by the TMA and curated by Caleb Bell, “Texas Birds” spotlights works from Tolbert’s ongoing Texas Bird Project – including a recently finished piece that never has been seen by the public. Started in 2014, this body of work includes drawings, paintings, and prints that highlight a wide variety of the bird species that inhabit the state. The series was largely inspired by early childhood experiences with the Lone Star State’s vast array of flora and fauna on trips the artist took with his father, Frank X. Tolbert Sr., as the elder Tolbert was writing his column “Tolbert’s Texas” for the “Dallas Morning News.”

Special Events Special events in connection with current exhibitions include a FREE First Friday tour. The first Friday of each month, 11am-12:30pm, the TMA offers a full day of FREE admission plus tours. Family Days will be from 2-4pm the second Saturday of each month. There is FREE admission, interactive art projects, light snacks, and a festive atmosphere for all ages. August 2nd (6-9pm):

Books

Reading the Kids Back to School By Gini Rainey “Mischief and Mayhem: Part I of the Faerlands Chronicles” by S. D. Nicholson I think you know me enough by now to know that magical kingdoms and fantasy are not the usual genre of reading that I reach for. So when I was approached by the author’s publicist to read and review this book, I wasn’t even aware it fell into this area. With that being said, I must admit that I have thoroughly enjoyed and been intrigued by the characters and tiny world that Mr. Nicholson has created in his first book. Without a doubt, the main character, the tiny fae Ophelia, is every bit a heroine - as are her sixfoot-tall counterparts. I have no doubt in my mind that while the faes and faers of Nicholson’s book are in a struggle to preserve and maintain peace in their homeland, it is also analogous to the struggles we humans face on a daily basis while trying to attain a peaceful coexistence with the other inhabitants of this big blue marble. The not so terribly hidden messages in Nicholson’s book came through loud and clear to me: that if we spend quiet time by ourselves, we will be able to find and explore fully what our capabilities are, and additionally, fight for what we hold near and dear. This is an outstanding read. Not only will it capture your imagination, but it will also have you start thinking about what undeveloped talents and truths you might not have discovered about yourself. I read the teaser at the end of the book and am anxious to read Part 2 of the Faerlands Chronicles! Rating: 5 of 5, Copyright 2019 – Köhler Books “Big Little Lies” by Liane Moriarty This book, from which the HBO series starring Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman was adapted, is a pretty slow starter. Working backwards from an event, the first third of this book was busy building strong characters, exposing bullies (adult-sized and pint-sized), examining failed and new relationships, and displaying various points of view about the culmination of events. As usual, Ms. Moriarty isn’t afraid to coolly broach hot topics - blended families, sexual assault, and violence against women and children - all carefully tempered with unexpected humor and human emotions. Set in a rather cliquish upper-end Australian beach community, the human interests begin to develop by retrospectively following a murder at the exclusive private school. Liane develops some pretty interesting characters using her very successful skills and creating some of the most flawed people this side of Sydney. This is definitely worth the read for anyone with school-aged children as it brings together three moms whose only commonality is their kindergarteners. While pointing out each of the character’s flaws, Moriarty gently has a couple of fingers likewise pointing at the helicopter-parenting skills of modern-day moms that perhaps are creating our current crop of young adults who are clueless. Without a doubt, this is yet another in a long stream of controversial topics that Liane Moriarty isn’t afraid of writing about, and the plot twist at the end will keep you reading till the final page.
