Food Central Station Brick & Brew: Breathing New Life Into Old Digs By Johnny Griffith There’s a well known saying about not being able to teach old dogs new tricks, but it certainly didn’t mention anything about old buildings or new businesses, and there aren’t too many buildings around East Texas older than the one on the corner of Pacific and Main in Downtown Gladewater. Originally a Texaco Station in the 1930’s, the property was a working service station for more than decades before housing a few different ventures over the next several years. Recently, the address has found some of it’s former glory with the Central Station Brick & Brew, a restaurant and music venue that honors much of the building’s storied past while giving it a new lease on life. Local businessmen Tim Barnett and Dale Rhodes bought the property just over a year ago and spent most of their time over the next several months overseeing the renovation of the property to house the restaurant. Now one could say the last thing East Texas needs is another restaurant as it seems as if there is a new one popping up every couple of weeks, but the residents of Gladewater might argue that this is just what the Downtown area needed as an anchor to help kick-start a revitalization of the old business district. Not just another pizza and beer place, some of the unique aspects of Central Station include a true brick oven for fresh, handmade pizzas, locally sourced meats for their burgers like the ½ pound “Station Burger,” and more than 32 Texas craft beers at the custom made bar. In addition to the fantastic menu, when one walks into the business, you are immediately transported back to the 1930’s with renovations that bring out much of the original history of

Texas de Brazil:

the building and keep the service station feel. Though the exterior received a much-needed modern face lift and the inside was completely re-wired, brought up to current code, and renovated with customers in mind, many of the original features can still be seen throughout the restaurant. Some of the nostalgia includes the original restrooms, which were preserved and restored with vintage tiles; roll-up garage doors were added to the area that now serves as a music room for local and national artists alike; an original parts bin found off-site sitting in a barn and brought back to the location for display; and various car parts, road signs, and other curios adorn the location. Not simply dwelling on the past, Central Station has some new improvements on the property that allow visitors to enjoy the entire Downtown experience. In addition to the renovations inside, there was an upper deck added over the music room, which allows a panoramic view of the historic Downtown area as well as an outdoor seating patio complete with “patio games” and a convenient view of the stage when the bay doors are rolled up. The music room is an intimate setting that puts the musicians and audience in close proximity, but attention to detail in the acoustics and sound system allow the diners to enjoy eating while not being blown away. There is music on most Friday and Saturday nights, with many local performers taking the stage including local regulars like the Darrin Morris Band and Sean Berry as well as the occasional Nashville connection from performers like Neal McCoy or John Berry. Central Station isn’t simply a place to grab a bite and a brew; it’s a destination for a lazy weekend afternoon, winding down after work on a weekday, or catching music and hanging out with your friends for a few hours on Friday or Saturday nights. Capitalizing on the already laid-back atmosphere of the Downtown area, Central Station encourages wasting away an afternoon on the upper deck, drinking a cold beer, iced tea, or soda, listening to music, and spending time watching the cars and the

occasional train roll by. Within walking distance of the restaurant there are several antique shops, the Gladewater Museum, the Gladewater Opry, and several other shops to occupy your time as you stroll around Downtown, ending back at Central Station about the time the evening entertainment is warming up. Be sure to visit the bar before taking your seat and peruse the craft beer menu. Some of the taps are even run out of an old car rear end in keeping with the theme. You’ll find breweries from all over the state represented as well as several brews from right here in East Texas. You’ll also want to be sure to give the menu some special attention, and take in all of the specialty items like “The Whole Hog,” a 12 inch wood fired pizza with house pulled pork, ham, bacon, mozzarella, and topped with a house bbq sauce made with produce from local farmers. If you’re more of a burger person, then by all means go for the “Station Burger,” a ½ lb burger made with locally sourced, grass fed

much better at talking to people than I am, and probably still is. His personality is larger than life and can come across as a jerk, but a lovable one! I went up to Spence one day in the weight room and said, “Hey, man, I hear you play the guitar?” He said, “Yeah, you should come over to my apartment tonight.” This was before we moved in together. We kind of messed around for a night, and he was like, “We should really try to get some gigs.” I honestly had never even thought of it like that up until that point. All of a sudden it became a reality! I think it was that weekend we ended up at this place called The Scrub Pub in San Angelo. (I’m dating myself, I’m sure). Mark David Manders was playing that night, and Spencer, in typical form, goes up to him and asks him if he and I can open for him the next night of their two-night-stand, and Mark said yes! We show up and stagger our way through 45 minutes of terrible covers, but that was the beginning. Johnny: I’ve listened to your debut album, and it’s a nice, high-energy melding of older and newer country styles with a rock flair here and there. Which artists would you say had the most influence in the development of your current sound? Clay: Well, I’d say that sound isn’t current to what I’m doing now. The stuff I’m writing now, of course it’s still me, so there will be parallels, but as far as that album goes, it’s tough to say. I was kind of all over the place. Radney Foster was always an influence, but probably a little less these days. I’m actually more into pop driven stuff now, but still with that rock and country flare. I wouldn’t say I’m trying to be FGL, not

that kind of pop, but big pop, big choruses, big moments, and big hooks. That’s what I’m trying to do these days. Johnny: About how many shows a month are you playing? Clay: I’m kind of in a hiatus and working as a barber pretty much all the time. I’m writing, and we are planning on starting back up in 2018. But I’ve needed some more stability. I tried to kind of live a normal nine to five, thought I had a girl to marry, and that ended up just being more fuel for great songs. And that’s all I’ve got to say about that, for now. Johnny: What are some of your hobbies when you’re not thinking about work or music? Clay: I’d say hunting is up there, though I haven’t gotten to go much lately. I read a ton of stuff. I’m interested in Cormac McCarthy novels. You know, the guy that wrote “No Country For Old Men.” I like stuff based in the south and with a bit of mystery. Currently, I’m reading “A Time to Kill” by John Grisham. I guess I like books that have been made into movies. One kind of weird thing I’m interested in lately is that I’m a bit fascinated with paranormal stuff. UFO’s and stuff like that. The idea of it all fascinates me. My birthday is on the anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. So, of course, I’ve always been interested in that stuff. Really, I guess it’s a fascination with what’s behind closed doors, the mystery of it all. I’ll always chase a good mystery. Johnny: You’ve enjoyed some success in recent years, making the rounds on Texas radio, recording your debut album, touring to promote the album and gain exposure. At any point has it been hard to keep sight of Quitman, Texas and the path that’s brought you this far? Clay: Absolutely not. I’m there almost every weekend right now. Johnny: What has been your best memory so far in your musical journey? Clay: Playing Gruene Hall. Johnny: What’s on the agenda for 2018? Clay: A record, no doubt. I have songs that are the best stuff I’ve ever written, and they need to be heard. For more info about Clay Thrash and his music go to facebook.com/ClayThrash or reverbnation.com/claythrash.

A Conversation With Matt Magill from The Magills & Co. By Johnny Griffith Matt and Megan Magill love the stage. From the moment they met on stage in Oklahoma City years ago, through a decade in New York City, and a return to roots in East Texas, theirs is a marriage of music and ministry. As the “Magills” portion of The Magills & Co, the husband and wife duo take the stage singing songs of life, love, faith, failure, triumph, and trust. They like to call their music “grace music,” an honest conversation with the listener rooted in transparency, compassion, and music that flows from the lives they live together. I sat down with Matt this month to get a better snapshot of who The Magills are and what’s coming up for them in the near future. Johnny: When did you each start developing an interest in music, and what was really the moment when you realized this was something you wanted to do as more than just a hobby? Matt: Ursula K. Le Guin said that “the creative adult is the child that survived.” Megan and I didn’t develop an interest in music. We just never left our childhood behind. We are children, and so making music is both hobby and vocation. It isn’t work to play. A child at play is unconcerned with things like deadlines or obligations. His/her life is an expression of possibility and joy. When considering “moments” that we realized music was something that was sacred to us, it’s more that there were moments that could have crushed us, that could have caused us to withdraw; rejection, failure, and discouragement did not have their way with us. Instead, our marriage has been a great gift to each of us - a friendship based on the mutual determination to remain open, expressive children, receptive to what we’re given and faithful to give it away to others. Johnny: You two have a great story about meeting, whirlwind romance, marriage, and off to the Big Apple to “make it” where you persevered through struggles, eventually finding your way back to East Texas. How much of what you guys had to endure during that time period, going through the crucible of maturity and experience, influences how you approach the music today? Matt: New York City was transformative for us because it’s an incredibly difficult environment to endure but also because we moved there two weeks after getting married. Cut off from our respective communities and parents, we had to learn who we are in light of our new city and new marriage. It changed us forever. People often ask us, “Why would you all move (or stay) in Tyler, Texas?” or “Don’t you want to make it?” Our response is always that we’ve already made it, and we’re finally home. We dreamed dreams and lived lives in New York City and became a married couple there. We walked through “the fiery furnace of affliction” that is choosing to stay with someone who inevitably fails you from time to time. The commitment fuels the passion and as you look in the rearview mirror (which is all you have) you see that God was faithful to provide you the tools emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually that you needed to keep walking through whatever “valley of the shadow of death” you were enduring. Gratitude becomes the response, and hope springs eternal. Artists need to be critical of the status quo but hopeful about the future. Otherwise, what’s the point? If you’re not critical, then there’s no need to speak truth. If you’re not hopeful then you’re resigned to silence expecting truth won’t be received. Music is a means of truth in our lives both when it comes to us (and through us) as a cultural critique or an expression of hope. The roots of our commitment to and appreciation of this path were forged in our earliest days and darkest nights of our marriage together in NYC. Johnny: When did you decide you wanted to make music as a duet instead of pursuing individual musical paths? Matt: From the day I met Megan I knew my life would be better with her than without her. I feel the same way about our musical lives. I’m better when she’s beside me. Our sound is better when she sings with me. I’m a more honest performer when she’s there with me, and the reason is that I am who I am because she is my helpmate. I have become who I have become because of her help, and she has become more fully alive in that role. She is such a fully-realized woman….and probably because of how much help I needed! I HAVE to have her beside me. Johnny: Do you primarily perform as a duet, or do you utilize a full band? Matt: We love to play with our band. Collin Anderson (bassist and Meg’s brother), Chris Foreman (guitar), Loren Roe (drums), and Andrew Lindstrom (keys and trumpet) are brothers and are the most generous guys I know. We love to play with them as often as possible, but we also dig the intimate moments around town playing as a duo. Johnny: Who are some of your most significant influences musically to this point? Matt: I go through phases. When I was a kid I was crazy for Paul Simon, and I still am. Then I went nuts for The Black Crowes through high school, and then I got into southern California hippy folk rockers Gram Parsons and David Crosby type stuff, and then I got super into all the Tulsa Sound JJ Cale music and Leon Russell and Delaney and Bonnie. Currently Megan and I are huge fans of Dawes, and lately, an Ontario duo called Kacy and Clayton have caught our attention. We also really love Blitzen Trapper and their whole Portland, Oregon music scene. It’s so super rich right now (Fruit Bats, Vetiver, Blind Pilot, Laura Gibson just to name a few). And on the Gospel tip I still listen to old school stuff like Larry

Norman, Andrae Crouch, and The Staple Singers - before the Christian music machine made everything sound the same. Don’t get me started on all that. Johnny: How would you describe your musical style, and how much of your current set list is original versus cover songs? Matt: We play songs we like to listen to as well as songs that I write. I’m a super record freak so I’m always discovering old tunes that I want other people to hear. So we learn them and play them. Learning the newest cover song that everybody is listening does not interest me at all. Megan loves the Standards (Great American Songbook) so we’re always mixing those in, and I’m always bringing the band songs from early Clapton or Spencer Davis Group or Steely Dan or Traffic or Sam Cooke. But, if people are listening, I’m apt to play more originals. So listen up, and you’ll hear them. Johnny: Faith is a big part of your lives and by extension, your music. Is that a deliberate decision to utilize music as a ministry tool, or would you describe it as simply an organic expression of your core selves? Matt: We play with the same band that plays at Bethel Bible Downtown campus (above The Foundry Coffee House), so musically it’s like a “Farm to Market” band. We live lives alongside these guys; we pray with these guys; we break bread with these guys; we drink wine with these guys, so it follows that we would make music with them. Before we met, Megan and I were both trying to be something we weren’t yet. That’s what kids do. But God gave us one another to learn to become comfortable with who He created us to be and accept love. Because we have accepted that love (first from God and then from one another) we have become increasingly at ease with who we are. Whether it’s Saturday night music or Sunday morning music we are us - receiving love and giving love. We’re the same; our band is the same; our sound is the same. We’re not trying - we’re just being. Johnny: What has been your best musical memory to this point in your journey together? Matt: Watching the curtain close on Megan’s musicals each year fills me with so much pride. She has a musical theatre studio and teaches about 80 kids throughout the school year imbibing them with so much confidence and encouraging such profound character and emotional honesty in these kids. She writes these musicals that are just beautiful and so much work. When they come to completion it just fills my heart. As far as rock n’ roll goes, getting to play with Marc Ford of The Black Crowes, and probably the baddest guitarist ever, was THE highlight of my musical life. Period. (Not to mention he played guitar all over our new record, “Down is Up is Down” available on itunes, spotify etc.) Johnny: What have been the biggest challenges to this point? Matt: Megan and I don’t always agree. And mostly because I don’t want to be wrong. Our challenge is the same that any married couple working together experiences. I want her to think that I am strong and dependable and wise (the list goes on). But the trick is, when I fail her, I don’t want to admit it because it makes me feel weak and dependent and foolish. Vulnerability is the key, and it doesn’t get easier, but through the years we’re becoming more aware of our need to exhibit it. You didn’t know this was going to turn into marriage counseling, did you? Johnny: What kind of experience are you hoping a first-timer gets when they come to a Magills concert? Matt: On the best nights, they’ll get us talking into the mic saying things about our lives and laughing with the band. If we’re feeling good, giving grace to one another in the moment, then our music will sound great, our hips will be shaking, and I’ll probably be sweating. Those are the good nights - when the folks in our community are soaking up what we’re pouring out. Johnny: What’s on the horizon in 2018 for you guys? Matt: We’re thinking about taking all of our gear down to Meg’s folk’s lake house and setting up for four or five days with all the wives and kids and just working out some new tunes and writing together and living together for a while. The tribute shows at The Foundry will continue (we do four or five a year), and February 23rd-24th I’m putting on The 4th Annual Mockingbird Conference in Downtown Tyler. This year our musical guest will be Eric Earley of Blitzen Trapper. I’m a huge fan of this guy, and it will be an honor to host him in Tyler. Megan will put on another musical in May, and we’ll play all year long with the band that goes by “& Co.” on our never-ending “Stick Around Town Tour.” Why would we ever want to leave? Colton Mathis:

A True Blue Texan, Playing Hard, Working Hard By Johnny Griffith When you think about growing up in Texas, there are a few boxes that typically get checked off along the way: playing sports (most likely football or baseball), hunting, fishing, camping, working hard, and playing hard. I had the pleasure of meeting Colton Mathis, and it didn’t take me long to realize that he checked off all the boxes and then some. As a kid he played football and baseball in school at Crandall, Texas where they had moved from Greenville, via Austin. Also having a love of the outdoors, he remembers hunting trips as a kid where he would spend six hours in the car on the ride down listening to music that would shape his tastes for years to come. Perhaps one of the most Texan things he’s done in his life, though, would be to pick up the guitar and make it an extension of who he is. He uses it as a vehicle to tell stories, make people laugh, make people cry, but most of all, make amazing music. Currently residing in Forney, Mathis has been performing all over East Texas recently. Luckily we managed to get him to sit still long enough to answer some questions for EGuide. Johnny: What was the one thing in music that grabbed you early and wouldn’t let go? Colton: As long as I can remember music has always affected me differently. Around age six or seven I heard Stevie Ray Vaughan and that was it, I was hooked. It hit me deep. I really didn’t understand it then, but it did something to me. Johnny: Was it always guitar for you, or is that where you landed eventually? Colton: Yeah, I think it was. When I figured out that the sound I was hearing was made by the guitar, I had to have one. I played a little saxophone in middle school, but it never really did it for me. I enjoy playing bass and keys as well, but there’s

nothing like the guitar for me. It’s nothing short of medication for my soul. Johnny: Those hunting trips with your dad and the six hour drives listening to music had to have a major impact on you. Did you pick up any influences from that early exposure? Colton: Man, I had quite a few, a lot of blues influence as well as classic rock even into classic country. My father had a collection of cassette tapes in a blue cassette case, and that was pretty much my playlist growing up. He was a carpenter and worked on the road quite a bit, and he took me on the road with him as much as he could. I loved going to work with him, the longer the drive the more music he introduced to me. I remember the first time he said, “Hey son, you should listen to this.” It ended up being Stevie Ray Vaughan’s greatest hits and “Taxman” is the first song on the album. From that point every time he would say that, I would listen. From there it was Stevie, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, ZZ Top, and Hendrix; by that time the blues had its grips on me. My dad also loved The Eagles and had just about every album. That’s kinda where the rock thing started in. The first time I heard “Life In The Fast Lane” I was like, “Woah what is this?” Then it went to Skynyrd’s album “Another One From The Road.” It was a live album and man, it sent me into a frenzie! I had just fell in love with the sound of guitar, and now I’m hearing three guitars pretty much soloing all at once! It changed me; that music spiritually changed me. And I really started to get more interested in what all was in that blue cassette case and found one that just said Led Zeppelin across the front of it, but there wasn’t anything in the box. I went to Walmart with my mom one day (back when they still sold cassettes), and scrolling through them I found Led Zeppelin 3. As soon as I got home, I put it in the Walkman, and it blew my fragile little mind! They were hard rock and blues and even folk all in one band. Led Zeppelin is my favorite band, as I got older I got into more modern rock and blues. But these bands were the reason for my love of music. Johnny: Did you find being a musician in high school to be more of a challenge or an asset? Colton: Well it never hit me until high school that the girls dig the guitar. It became somewhat of my identity, and I quit all sports to devote all my time to guitar. I was addicted to music by then, I wasn’t able to focus on anything else, including school work. I ended up staying up all night playing and sleeping in class, even when I was awake in school all I thought about was playing. They called it ADD. I eventually found myself leaving public school to be homeschooled where I would sit down for a while and do some work, but mostly played guitar all day. Johnny: Stylistically it seems you gravitated toward the Texas blues sound of Stevie and Jimmy Vaughn. What drew you to that more than country or rock, which seem to be a bit more prevalent in this area? Colton: Well the foundation of my music is definitely the blues; it has changed over time, but it always seems to be there. The blues is so much more that a music genre; it’s a feeling, and I’ve felt that feeling for awhile now. Just the emotion of it, a single bend of a string can send chills up my spine. I get goose bumps every time I hear Albert King bend a note way up there or when Stevie hits that long bend, it hits deep. I got more into rock and country music later, but the blues has always had me. Johnny: When did you figure out this music life was for you? Colton: I was about 15 or so when I started playing out; me and one my best childhood friends Mackenzie Brooks, his brother Robert and their Uncle Buckwheat, played at the park in Crandall. I think that might of been my first couple of gigs, but was still just jamming around the house at that point. One day my friend Bobby Braswell came over to borrow an amp, and we ended up jamming until we decided to make a band out of it. Around the same time Bobby was working at the cotton gin and met a guy named Chris Cunningham. He suggested we jam with him. So we joined up, and the Chris Cunningham band was the first gigging band I played for. We played Texas red dirt, and at the time, I was just getting into it so it was real cool for

me because it was new to me. I loved those days. Johnny: About how many shows a month are you playing these days? Colton: I play about 10 shows or more a month, sometimes less, sometimes more. I’d like to be playing everyday, but it’s just not possible at the moment. Johnny: Are you primarily performing as a solo artist, or are you sitting in with other musicians? Colton: Yeah, somewhat. I’ve been playing a lot with a good friend of mine Cody Daniel and doing song swaps. I’ve been searching for the right guys to form a band, but you know how hard it is to find the right folks. Johnny: How would you describe your original music stylistically, and how did that process develop over the years? Colton: Well my original stuff definitely has the blues in it, but over the years I’ve developed this darker side of country, a more red dirt/Texas sound. It just kinda comes out that way now days. My girlfriend says, “Babe your stuff is kinda depressing,” but I guess I just play what I feel or more or less what I know. It’s difficult to explain how I ended up here; I just did. I do like to write in different styles, though, for every feeling there’s a song that sings to it. But I like that people haven’t been able to label me yet. Maybe one day someone will say, “Yeah, that guy just plays what he feels.” That would be the best way to describe my music to me. Johnny: What has been your best memory so far in your musical journey? Colton: Playing main stage House of Blues in Dallas, no doubt. I had a blues band a few years ago called Colton & the 45’s, and it was so awesome, the place was packed. It was probably the biggest gig I’ve ever had. Sitting side stage I was so nervous I was shaking, but when it came my turn it was like I just floated out there. I didn’t sleep the entire night, I was on such a high. I’ll never forget the feeling. I can remember we played a slow blues tune, and somewhere in the middle of the song we brought it real down low. I hit one of those bends I could feel it in my knees, then I guess it hit the crowd because everyone went crazy at that moment. I didn’t feel like myself; it really didn’t even feel like I was the one playing; it was just happening. After the song I turned to my bassist Mike Pope and was like, “Did you feel that?” He said he thought everyone did. Johnny: Where can people find you performing over the next couple of months? Colton: I’ve got gigs all around north East Texas, looking to start moving out towards Dallas and Fort Worth soon. One place I do play regularly is Boondocks out in Seven Points, Texas on Cedar Creek Lake. That’s kinda my home place right now. Johnny: As the year draws to a close, what is on the horizon for Colton Mathis in 2018 ? Colton: Right now the plan is to continue to play gigs as much as possible. I’ve got an EP that will drop some time in the beginning of the new year, but really I’m just trying to focus on my original material and play as much as I can. It’s Christmas-time in the small town of Fayro, Texas, and the Futrelle Sisters—Frankie, Twink, and Honey Raye—are not exactly in a festive mood. A cranky Frankie is weeks overdue with her second set of twins. Twink, recently jilted and bitter about it, is in jail for inadvertently burning down half the town. And hot-flash-suffering Honey Raye is desperately trying to keep the Tabernacle of the Lamb’s Christmas Program from spiraling into chaos. The celebrity guest Santa Claus - played by Frankie’s long-suffering husband, Dub - is passing a kidney stone. Books Just In Time For Christmas Giving By Gini Rainey “Killing Kennedy” by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard Written in his signature fact-finding/telling style, Bill O’Reilly has managed to condense hundreds of thousands of pages of information about the charismatic John F. Kennedy, his impact on our nation, and the loss we all felt when he was shot down in the prime of his life. With more than a million copies in print, O’Reilly traces JFK’s public life from the PT109 disaster to the horrific day in Dallas, while paralleling his life with the life of his assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald. Even though many of us are more than aware of many of the “details” that surrounded this event, O’Reilly uses his clean-cut, signature style to present them in an unemotional and factual way that you will make you feel as if you are living those days all over again. While there are those who feel there is more to the story than we will ever know, O’Reilly’s re-telling of JFK’s life – the good, the bad, and the ugly – will keep you engrossed as not only his private, but public life are laid out for review. Whether you embrace what is presented by O’Reilly and co-author Dugard or are a skeptic who embraces one of the conspiracy theories, this book is a riveting retelling of an event that

changed the course of history for our country. Rating: 5 of 5, Copyright 2012, Henry Holt and Co. “Dress Codes for Small Towns” by Courtney Stevens Courtney Stevens is definitely making a name for herself in the Young Adult literary world with books that speak volumes to her readers. Tending to write about accepting people who are viewed as different from the rest, her latest book follows the Hexagon, a group of closely knit friends, as they try to make a difference in their hometown, Otters Holt, Kentucky. Delicately, but honestly, touching on many of the issues that the young adults of this generation are facing, many truisms are revealed. With a grasp of small town politics and religion, Stevens, a former adjunct professor, youth minister, and Olympic torch bearer, ably relates to young people who are struggling with social identities through her writing. With superb character building skills and a deep understanding of the issues that young people face on a daily basis, Stevens has written another book that will fill your heart with hope and keep you engaged until you turn the last page. Rating: 5 of 5, Copyright 2017, Harper Teen “The Bubble Who Would Not Pop!” by Shelly Roark A great gift idea for the children on your Christmas list is this delightful book written by Shelly Roark who has written for Focus on the Family, American Bible Society, and World Help to name a few. Delightfully illustrated by Germany-based artist Simone Krüger,

this book tells the tale of Billy Bubble who holds a little girl’s prayer inside his filmy body as he travels upward to heaven. Although a charming tale filled with clever verbiage, this book carries a power message for its young readers that God is all around them and always listening to their innermost thoughts and prayers. Art

Inside the Artist’s Studio:

Cora Rountree: Tattoo You

By Derrick White Start Me Up – When I asked local artist, Cora Rountree what started her on the path to becoming an artist she answered, “Art is the only thing I was ever good at or made sense to me. I was always coloring, crafting, or making the best school project possible when I was a kid.” I first met Cora more than ten years ago in the art department at Tyler Junior College. Her unique talents, work ethic, and quirky personality stood out, and she was soon selected as one of the performance grant students. Performance grant students are given a modest scholarship and charged with exhibiting their artwork. A student showcase allows artists exposure as well as the experience of creating exhibition-ready work. Students display their art at a professional level and are integral in curating and installing the show. “After receiving the performance grant and learning I could, in fact, be an artist made me switch to an art major,” remembers Cora. Hang Fire – After TJC, Cora transferred to The Art Institute of Atlanta and received a B.F.A degree in Illustration and Graphic Design. “There was a lot of trial and error trying to figure out how to make money with art but still have creative freedom. I tried working professionally as a graphic designer for a while. I made things from wedding invitations to billboards to cycling apparel, but I was losing my creativity. When I made the move back to East Texas to be near family, I decided to make a career change, a big one,” Cora states. Slave – It turns out Cora needed to find the right medium and tools for her creative expression, one she could passionately be a slave to, and it continues to hold her interest. The artist affirms, “I kept doing magazine ads for a company in Denver. I began teaching painting at Pinot’s Palette while I apprenticed to become a tattoo artist. I was spending all of my time looking at tattoos, drawing tattoos, and spending all of my money on tattoos, so it made sense to me. I now, on a daily basis, sell my artwork. Before I became a tattoo artist, I would sell a painting every now and then. Now, for the last three years I work by appointment only, people send me ideas, and I create something special just for them. Tattooing is definitely the most challenging thing I’ve ever done. It’s permanent, no erasing. Your canvas moves, complains, and bleeds. Your machine vibrates,

the needle vibrates, and your back hurts. There are so many factors, but the fact people daily ask for me to put my artwork on them forever amazes me. Paintings can be damaged in fire, floods, tornados, or stolen by a roommate. A tattoo is with the person until they die, or lose a limb.” Neighbors – Cora lives on a small farm in the woods outside of Tyler with her many animal neighbors currently consisting of four dogs, two donkeys, two turtles, a tortoise, and some fish. She spends most of her time at Red Rooster Tattoo (1214 E. Marshall Ave., Longview) with a very talented group of artists, including her mentor who taught her the art of tattooing, Tyler Weisenberger. She laughs, “If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be able to give people forever art. He actually introduced me to my boyfriend, his brother.” Worried About You – Every career and situation comes with its own set of frustrations. Before, for Cora, it was not being able to make enough money from doing something she loved. “In my current job the most frustrating part is putting your heart into something, and then it’s not what the client has in mind. No

worries. We will continue to work together and find a happy medium. Tops – “We at Red Rooster Tattoo want to give people the best tattoo possible. Each of us has our own unique style, and we place people with the best artist for the tattoo they want, states Cora. You can check out Red Rooster on Facebook or Instagram at Red Rooster Tattoo. Heaven – Cora’s favorite artist is Sandi Calistro (Denver based painter and tattoo artist). “When I lived in Atlanta, I went to an art show and saw one of her paintings of a circus lady holding a monkey, very stylized with large eyes but still perfect. She even drew little tattoos all over the lady. I can still see it perfectly years later. I looked her up on the internet and realized she was a tattoo artist as well and living in Denver. I was already planning on moving to Denver so when I realized that’s where she lived, I immediately booked an appointment with her. I began going to get tattooed by her every few months for a few years. I still get tattooed by her actually. It was she and her co-worker that asked if I had ever considered being a tattoo artist. At the time I was making good

Garden of Ambition

On exhibit through December 17th, Longview Museum of Fine Arts is pleased to welcome artist Mallory Page and her abstract monochromatic paintings to Longview. The Garden of Ambition is a solo exhibition of largescale, monochromatic artworks by New Orleans-based artist Mallory Page. Featuring 17 new works, the exhibition offers a sophisticated study in perception, exploring how measured changes in color and light can effect shifts in visual understanding. Mallory Page said, “I work with color, composition and technique to deliver a purely visual interpretation of my continual struggles and fascinations with cognitive dissonance and automatism. Which is why my paintings translate a bevy of emotions so that even the most calming works demand your attention with forceful strength. With strong elements of design, fascinations with light, color, layering and nostalgia the work creates an environment from within. It is deeply sensitive and naturally intuitive but I insist that it first and foremost embodies some form of resting place from thought. I work with sensory because it’s not meant to evoke too much thought. I myself struggle in a world with increasingly too much to process and with less and less tactile or human intricacies. This is how I stay 22 • EGuideMagazine.com

money doing graphic design and thought I was set in my career and too old to make the change. She’s truly talented, and the way she does things are heavenly unmatchable,” exclaims Cora. Waiting On A Friend – When asked about some of the most important things art brings to her life Cora replies, “People and happiness. Some of my best friends and most important people in my life I met somehow through art, whether from school, in a class, at a show, at a job. Art brings people into my life. Art brings happiness into my life as well. When I worked the corporate design jobs, I was overworked. I never did anything fun or creative for myself. I was losing who I was. I was becoming stagnant. Now working in a creative environment where everyone I work with is inventive, it keeps my creative juices flowing, and they push me to create which makes me happy. Making art is a release, a therapy in a sense. An artist could go crazy not being able to create. Keep up with Cora’s art, tattoos, and/ or animal shenanigans on Instagram at @ lovecoratattoos.

connected with inner beauty and true projections of oneself.” A studied artist, with a B.A. in interior design, Mallory’s sound foundation in art fundamentals focused on color and balance, and her continued pursuit of research of art and artists lends to the brilliance and feigned simplicity of her work. She recounts “It is not so much how the work looks to me but it’s about how it moves you, I study the emotional experience in work, I study the artists lives- the humanity within work is the trigger to what draws me within a piece.” Her work is in public and private collections throughout the United States and has remained a staple favorite among top designers and tastemakers over the past 5 years. In 2010, the artist opened Mallory Page, her Julia Street Studio in the New Orleans Arts District. While we love to entertain guests the studio is open by appointment only. The Longview Museum of Fine Art is located at 215 E. Tyler St., Longview. For more info go to lmfa.org.

TMA Pop Art “Andy Warhol with Screen Prints & Snapshots” Exhibits One of the most highly anticipated exhi-

bitions in recent years comes to the Tyler Museum of Art with “Andy Warhol: Screen Prints & Snapshots,” and is open to the public through January 7th, 2018 at the TMA, 1300 S. Mahon Ave. on the Tyler Junior College main campus. General exhibition admission is $6 for adults and $4 for seniors. Admission is free for TMA members, students, children under 12, Tyler Junior College faculty/staff, and City of Tyler employees. The exhibition, organized by the TMA and curated by Caleb Bell, features close to 40 works by the late Pop Art icon, including a series of Warhol’s signature silkscreen prints drawn from the Cochran Collection of LaGrange, Ga., and a collection of his celebrity-centric Polaroid photographs from the Meadows Museum of American Art at Centenary College of Louisiana. “Screen Prints & Snapshots” showcases several distinct bodies of work from the later career of Warhol, widely recognized as the father of the Pop Art movement and known for his renderings of Campbell’s Soup cans, Brillo boxes, and the “cult of celebrity” that surrounded his Manhattan studio, The Factory. Highlights of “Screen Prints & Snapshots” include the silkscreen prints from the 1986 Cowboys and Indians he completed shortly before his death, spotlighting such iconic subjects as John Wayne, Teddy Roosevelt, and Geronimo; his 1981 Myths series, featuring touchstones of American pop culture including Mickey Mouse, Howdy Doody, and Superman; and selections from his “Flash,” Flowers and Television series. Rounding out the exhibition are a selection of Polaroids and silver gelatin prints, shot from 1958 until Warhol’s 1987 death and offering insight into his intimate relationship with his celebrity friends – Dolly Parton, Jack Nicklaus, and Pia Zadora among them. Support for the exhibition is provided by Community Partner Sponsor Southside Bank and Media Sponsor Tyler Today Magazine. Special events in connection with “Screen Prints & Snapshots” include free First Fridays featuring guided exhibition tours at 11am December 1st and January 5th and Family Days 2-4pm December 9th.
