To Do Pink Door Gift Shop:
A Unique & Creative Selection
Best Seafood in East Texas!
By Barbara Greenbauer Gift expectations are running high this time of year, with some folks searching high and low for that special gift that will produce oohs and aahs of delight. Look no further than Pink Door Gift Shop, where you can find unique, one-of-a-kind, whimsical, and even humorous gifts. Spanking brand new (opened November 5th) in the Macy’s Shopping Center, Pink Door is the brainchild and family project of Kristi Roberts, the energetic driver behind the vision. The store features vintage, modern, and unique items that are arranged and displayed with energy, passion, and love. “I’ve always wanted to own my own store,” Roberts said. “Creativity has always been key in my life, and in the store I get to let my creative juices flow.” The store is chock full of bright delights with eye-catching pink signature tables displaying one of a kind wares from small lots and specialty selections. “We are not in this to compete, but to compliment,” Roberts said. “We are hoping to provide customers with a unique, fun shopping experience unlike anything else in Tyler.” What’s inside Pink Door will make your senses whirl and you will want to linger and check out the treasure trove of goodies. The seven different “departments” within the store feature everything from health and beauty to food and wine accessories. One of the great perks of shopping at Pink Door is the prices and the variety. Prices are very affordable, with the highest item listed at $79. You can fill your holiday shopping list and treat yourself to a gift too! What makes this shop unique is all about family. The store features the jewelry line “Jack of Hearts,” the dream of Roberts’ youngest son Jack, an entrepreneur in his own right. Jack’s collection is made up of pieces collected from closeouts and estate sales, and is lovingly cleaned, repaired, and resold and is affordable to every budget. Middle child Samantha operates as a buyer and keeps her eye on what’s new and in style. Eldest son Matt is the Pink Door Web Designer and Programmer, with husband Bruce, lifting, carrying and supporting the store (when he’s not practicing law.) Kristi is a proud grandmother, and the top store models are granddaughters Bethany and Hazel. What’s in a name? Pink Door has a mighty back-story and is a tribute to Roberts’ mother and aunt who both lost their battles to breast cancer. Kristi is also a breast cancer survivor so the message is personal. “We hope it serves as a reminder for Breast Cancer Awareness and to get your mammograms,” she explained.
So, what can you expect to find at Pink Door? First, an array of health and beauty products for the whole family, including salt and sugar scrubs to bum butter for babies. Selections are focused on environmentally-friendly and natural product lines. They also feature a line of vegan products, including a large selection of all natural deodorants. There are lots of great shower stuff too, including oils and rubs and aromatherapy roll-ons. Home is where the heart is, and you can fulfill that sentiment at Pink Door. You can fill your wish list with everything from candles, wall art, wooden signs, and one of a kind art and striking prints. New mamas will love the selection for babys, including some really neat plates, spoons, trays, wooden teething rings, and hand-crocheted items. Jack’s jewelry line also sports fun pieces for the older ladies (older than four that is) that will make them feel like a princess. Looking for the perfect gift for the man in your life? The store has an eclectic selection ranging from soaps, tools and trinkets, and a Gentleman’s Pharmacy Male Pail. The favorite fun gift that Kristi puts together is entitled “The Man Bundle” and is a collection of tools and trinkets on one keychain: a perfect gift for survival in the car. Coffee is king at Pink Door, and Kristi will help you find the perfect package, with off the chart blends and the funniest cups you will ever find. Donna Guthrie from Frankston was looking for a teacup for her church exchange. She found a real beauty in pink with graphic eyelashes, perfect for the occasion. “I love the selection,” Donna said. “I am definitely coming back to take a closer look at the jewelry.” Tea time is the best time, and the store features infuser balls and chains, ceramic cat team trays, specialty teas, and single-use kettles. The personal touch is what it’s all about at Pink Door, and the gift packaging is out of this world. Kristi gift wraps every purchase and you will want to wrap your infused jellies and flavored jams in one of her specialty bags. The Pink Door has a fantastic selection of greeting cards that are also unique from small vendors with limited printing. Taking a bottle of wine somewhere this season? Stop by the Pink Door for the perfect wine bag. Kristi is all about customer service and making the Pink Door a fun shopping experience, greeting every customer personally and explaining the store layout. “We want everyone who shops with us to leave with a smile on their face,” she said. Make the Pink Door a stop for your seasonal shopping and all-year round. Pink Door is located in the Macy’s Shopping Plaza at 4720 S. Broadway in Tyler. Store hours are Monday-Friday 10am5:30pm, Saturday 10:30am-5:30pm, and closed on Sunday. Take a look on Facebook @pinkdoortyler, pinkdoortyler.com, or (903)630-5653. Find events and things to do at:

Music Thieves Of Sunrise: Stealing the Spotlight By Johnny Griffith There’s a new Robin Hood movie which recently hit theaters and, yet again, tells the story of the famous thief of Sherwood Forest, and his band of merry men who stole from the corrupt and gave to the needy in order that he might bring them a bit of happiness and relief from weight of their daily lives. In East Texas, we’ve got our band of musical rebels who are working to bring listeners their own brand of musical happiness and relief. Thieves Of Sunrise has been consistently raiding stages and venues around the region for about seven years now, fighting against cookie-cutter music, traditional expectations, and launching love arrows at their audience with their brand of rock and roll. The brainchild of Matthew Marcus McDaniel, who we featured last month as a solo artist, the Thieves have previously released 2 full-length albums and a 45 with two singles. Recently they released their 3rd studio album amidst a year full of changes and new plans for the future. I sat back down with Matthew to get more insight into the Thieves Of Sunrise, who they are, their musical philosophy, and what they’ve got working for next year: Johnny: Where is everyone from and how did you all end up in Thieves? M³: Right now everyone is from the Northeast TX and greater East Dallas area (Garland, Richardson). I started the band in the Winter of 2010, or at least I had the idea. It took me a few months to find the right guys. James Roy, our drummer, came to us two years ago through our former keyboard player Jake Stewart. He played with us part-time for a while before joining full time this year. Our new guitarist, Paul Thomas, came to us via James. In all honesty, this will be our first official statement that we have to rebuild. After touring heavily for five years, we had a couple of guys who decided to retire from touring and another that moved across the country to be closer to family. Having James come on board full time and having Paul join on has been wonderful, and we do have more than a few promising prospects at the other three positions. Yes, that is right, we will be moving forward as a six-piece band. And for any of our fans who might be worried about what Thieves of Sunrise is going to bring to the table in the future, if you haven’t seen any of our most recent trio shows, well, I invite you to hold on tight because it is only beginning to get good. We are currently rehearsing new members and writing new tunes. As soon as we are comfortable with the new members and where they are with the music, we will make announcements on our website and social media. Johnny: Where did the name Thieves Of Sunrise originate? M³: From a young age I have had an obsession with the honorable or noble thief motif, i.e., Robin Hood. I have also been quite

taken with the sunrise, to me, there is something magical about those special moments where the dark meets the light, and you get to watch the Earth wake up. It is a chance to begin a new and make of your life what you will. I like to call it an original metaphor on “seizing the day,” with a twist. We are the not-so-silent protagonists, “Thieves,” that are here to help you with that. Our goal is to make your life better, help you approach every new day with love and the realization of the endless possibilities you have. Johnny: How did everyone get started in music? M³: I was dancing on the family stereo in diapers, James was playing in bands from the time he was in high school until the present, and Paul came from a family of musicians and went to school for music. Johnny: Listening to your music, one can easily pick up Zeppelin, Black Crowes, maybe some Hendrix, Joplin, and CCR in there as well. How would you describe your music? M³: First and foremost we are a Rock & Roll band. We have at times classified ourselves as a Psychedelic Rock & Soul band. Beyond that, there are no rules or format. We do what feels right in the moment. That is the beautiful thing about Rock & Roll music, it encompasses so many other genres and can be whatever you want it to be. Rock music is truth, it is in all other music forms, and all other music is in it. Let us be cliche for a moment, Rock & Roll is not merely a musical genre; it is a lifestyle with attitude. Listen to our records, no one song sounds the same; no one record sounds like the last. We have not hit all of the styles yet, but we are working on it. Rock & Roll is as much a part of American culture as baseball and apple pie, so we begin and end there, our journey will give you the sauce. Johnny: What would you say the most significant influence is, as a band, you’ve had so far? M³: I feel like anyone who has seen us and anyone who knows me well at all in the past 10 years knows that the Black Crowes were instrumental to our early sound, but we are not now, nor were we ever trying to be the Black Crowes, nor would I want to limit what we do down to one influence, I think an entirely honest answer would be the love of and the pursuance of making beautiful music that reaches people on a higher level, a spiritual level if I might say so. The initial steps to taking on any art form, especially if you want to do it for a living, is because you love it. Make sure you are having a good time first if you don’t your craft will suffer. Johnny: You have a sound that’s not typical of this area compared to what you can usually hear on Friday or Saturday nights. How did that style evolve and was it a conscious choice to cultivate that sound? M³: Starting early I had no direction, I was writing and doing my very best to make songs out of it. What became clear to me very quickly was that I was not like my peers, not lyrically, nor in style or composition, and when I tried to go that route it did not ring true, and it did not feel right. That is where I decided I did not necessarily come from this background and maybe I should let my writing and sound speak for itself. I don’t believe it is a conscious choice, I write songs and come in with ideas, if the ideas don’t work we move on. Sometimes things that don’t feel right at the
time can come back around, but you never know. One thing we don’t do is write music with an agenda. Music for us is an art form. We write and make the art from our heart and soul about how we feel. Then, it is yours. It becomes your responsibility to interpret as you will. Our style evolves through songwriting and stage performance. Having no intention or aim with a song message and not wanting our songs ever to sound the same as any others can keep you fresh and having a free-form style on stage helps us to develop songs. We like to play our tunes as much as possible before we record them, even then they can evolve later and never sound the same again. We have an extreme improvisational style, and new songs have been born from our onstage live jams. Johnny: How has this year been for the band so far? M³: This year has been a wild ride, for sure, with a new record and management. There were some low points this year as well. A lot can change in a year, and we have lost some wonderful longtime members while gaining some new ones. I am most proud of our new record “Let the Truth Speak.” While it is our shortest record to date, it may be our best: no riff-raff, only the good stuff. We played fewer shows than we possibly might ever have but lots of them were bigger shows than we have ever played. Right now, while rebuilding, we are very excited to be working with some new musicians, writing new music, telling you all our new record which is already out across all mediums and preparing to fill the 2019 calendar. Johnny: So about that album you TOS released this year...how was that process for the band and any takeaways from this project that were different from previous efforts? M³: We worked with Michael Lattanzi in Nashville at Lattitude Studio South. His studio is absolutely phenomenal and one of our favorites we have had the honor to work with yet. We recorded it at the beginning of the year, so we had all of the original band members from the past five years sign on to do the record (Curtis Crofford, Shaun Crawford, Jake Stewart, Miles Mathewson). As a band we prefer to go as old school as possible and record analog to tape, it’s a part of our vibe. Unfortunately, the tape machine broke down, as vintage gear sometimes does, when we got there, so we shifted to pro tools while still recording through analog mixers and outboard gear. From time to time you have to deal with changes quickly and find a good attitude about if expectations change. We record our records as live as possible, not one instrument at a time. We feel that it gives our songs a bit more life. Working with someone the caliber of Michael
and in a studio that has few equals brought out a few things we did not know we had and allowed some of our newer, less developed tunes to shine through. All of our recording experiences have been different from the last, and this particular experience was more about where we were not only in the studio but in our lives and with the music. Johnny: What is the next primary goal for Thieves? M³: Plain and simple; continue to let the world know all about our newest album” Let the Truth Speak,” continue writing new material, fill the calendar, and ultimately to get back on the road touring and playing festivals. Last but not least we will be pursuing an opening position for a major international touring band. Johnny: What has been your best memory so far as TOS? What has been your biggest challenge? M³: There are too many memories, it’s hard to say that I would not trade any of them, but it’s harder to pick one favorite. I will be cliche once more and say that anytime a fan comes up to me and tells me they will remember the night the rest of their lives, that is a fantastic night. The biggest challenge is keeping a grassroots, independent band together and touring and making records amidst a world of pop culture, people who want to take advantage or use you and the evermounting cost of keeping the show going. Johnny: What experience are you hoping the first time listener takes away from a TOS show? M³: That our message of peace, love, and living the most rewarding life possible reaches you. We want you to have a memorable time, at the least. If you feel lifted, have a spiritual or lifealtering experience then we have done what we were put here for. Deck the Halls With Buddy Holly at Liberty Hall
The Beach Boys are Coming to March Tyler26thThis Spring at 7:30pm, come to the Oil Palace
By Sarah Buchanon The day after Thanksgiving, something changes. It might be the extra pounds gained from consuming too much turkey and stuffing, or it might be that radio stations officially switch to playing holiday music. Whether you agree or not, the most wonderful time of the year has arrived! To help put us in the holiday spirit, Liberty Hall is set to showcase one event the month of December that is sure to make you merry! “A Rockin’ Blue Christmas with Johnny Rogers, aka Buddy Holly” Back by popular demand, Liberty Hall invites you to attend their acclaimed Christmas concert: “A Rockin’ Blue Christmas with Johnny Rogers, aka Buddy Holly.” The event is set to take place Saturday, December 8th at 7pm in conjunction with Hit the Bricks. Join Buddy as he performs your favorite holiday classics in a Rock n’ Roll style! Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind event! Johnny Rogers was born in Jackson, Tennessee. His father was a radio personality in the late ‘40s and early ‘50s, who interacted with some of the biggest legends in music history. To name a few, Elvis, Conway Twitty, and Johnny Cash. When he was young, his father gifted him a guitar. It wasn’t until Rogers heard Buddy Holly’s “Rave On” did he have a desire to learn the instrument. At the age of 15, as a self-taught musician, Johnny began playing lead guitar for Chicago honkey-tonk legend Jimmy Nichols. It was on the stage of the Off Broadway Lounge where Rogers made his debut. Since then, Rogers has traveled around the United States paying homage to the legend of Buddy Holly as well as many other legend’s contributions to the iconic genre of Rock n’ Roll. To highlight his career, Rogers has performed in front of Buddy Holly’s surviving relatives and has played in well-known venues such as The
London Palladium and The Texas Opry Theater. In September 2016, Rogers was inducted into the Iowa Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame. To read more about Johnny Rogers, you can visit his website at thejohnnyrogersshow.com. Tickets can be purchased online for a Rockin’ Blue Christmas for $20 per person at libertytyler. com. You can capsulize most pop music acts by reciting how many hits they’ve had and how many millions of albums they’ve sold. But these conventional measurements fall short when you’re assessing the impact of The Beach Boys. This band has birthed a torrent of hit singles and sold albums by the tens of millions. But its greater significance lies in the fact that The Beach Boys’ songs have forever changed the musical landscape, profoundly influencing countless performing artists to follow. The Beach Boys are led by Mike Love and Bruce Johnston, who, along with Jeffrey Foskett, Christian Love, Tim Bonhomme, John Cowsill, Keith Hubacher, Christian Love, and Scott Totten continue the legacy of the iconic American band. Grammy-winning songwriter Bruce Johnston joined The Beach Boys in 1965, replacing Glenn Campbell, who filled in for Brian Wilson, on vocals/bass, when he retired from touring. Highly regarded in his field, Johnston’s vocal work with such legendary artists as Elton John and Pink Floyd firmly established him among rock’s elite artists. Captained by Mike Love, The Beach Boys play an astoundingly busy schedule of concerts, averaging 150 shows a year, ranging from sundrenched summer festivals to gala New Year’s celebrations and special events across the globe. The Beach Boys have continued to create and perform with the same bold imagination and style that marked their explosive debut over 50 years ago. The Beach Boys found through their music the key to unfading youth— and they made copies for everyone. To these guys, the beach isn’t just a place where the surf comes to play— it’s where life is renewed and made whole again. This concert will sell out for sure - get your tickets now!

December 8th: Tom Prasada-Rao Tom Prasada-Rao is a musician’s musician - an unassuming presence on the folk scene since the early nineties. His rich, effortless voice belies his fine musicianship and extraordinary songs. From “Rishi’s Garden” with it’s homage to Ravi Shankar to the groove of “Sleeping Beauty,” Tom’s music is melodic, ambitious, and reverent. From headlining major festivals 15 years ago to the relative obscurity of a recording studio, Tom continues to mature as an artist. That work blossomed into an impressive resume of producing credits. He’s touring again after being featured on the nationally syndicated TV show “Troubadour Texas.” Also scheduled this season are: • January 19th: Andy Gullahorn • February 2nd: Beyond the Pale • February 23rd: Tom Kimmel • March 23rd: Jacob Johnson • April 6th: Edie Carey More information can be found at theoldfirehouse.net.

Inside the Artist’s Studio:
And so become yourself.
Lifelong Learning: Betty Briggs By Derrick White “I guess you could say retirement actually lead me on the path to being an artist. I have always loved art but life kept getting in the way, family, practical priorities, but now at age 70, I can pursue my interests. TJC is once again there for me, as it has been for the past 36 years. I think the Audit Program is a wonderful opportunity for seniors to continue to learn and enjoy the many diverse classes our community college has to offer,” encourages artist Betty Briggs. This article celebrates the non-traditional student actively involved in studio art classes and enriching the creative learning environment. Lifelong learning is seeking continuous experiences building knowledge and skills during one’s life. This is an excellent use of the fine arts for staying healthy and well mentally, emotionally, and physically. It is great for a creative studio environment to have students ranging in age. At TJC, these students discuss and exchange ideas, work socially, and volunteer collectively, and it is always interesting to see different approaches to ideas and materials. “While waiting to enroll, I enjoy visiting with seniors, and we share our interests. Besides art classes, seniors sign up to exercise at the Ornelas HPE center, while others enjoy auditing government, english, voice, history, etc.,” explains Briggs. Betty Briggs enjoys abstract and landscape painting in acrylic and watercolor. She also works in clay and enjoys creating with her hands. She is a valuable asset to have in the studio and around campus. She is helpful and encouraging to other students. Briggs first started college in 1965 at Oklahoma State University. “I just wanted to be a housewife and mother. I was always interested in art but never got any encouragement, so I eventually dropped out and became a secretary,” recalls Betty. Eventually, Betty and her young family were brought to Tyler. A family friend suggested Betty check out TJC because it was sociable and rewarding. So when her youngest started kindergarten, she enrolled. “Tuition for six credit hours in 1982 was $25. It was so rewarding, and I signed up for six more hours in the spring. My teachers were so encouraging, and I enjoyed learning so much I decided to go for my associate’s degree in general studies. By the time I graduated, my teachers were emboldening me to continue my education at UT Tyler. Since I didn’t have a major, I decided to major in journalism,” states Betty. Adding, “I was never urged to pursue art.

So, as I worked towards my degree, I promised myself I would come back and take all the art classes I had been longing to take.” “I occasionally returned to TJC to take classes interesting to me, from tennis to real estate and, of course, art,” informs Briggs. While adjusting to a new and independent life and taking a free TJC career workshop, the director of career planning encouraged her to go back to college and get a master’s degree. Betty earned her master’s in just over a year while working part-time at the local newspaper and adjunct teaching journalism at TJC. All of this happened because her journalism professor had come to an art exhibition and was interested in buying her ceramic piece. “I was so excited, and when I updated her, she got me a job at the paper and hired me to teach mass communication. After I received my master’s, Linda Ziegler told me there was an opening as alumni director and encouraged me to apply,” states Betty. Years later she retired and among the things on her bucket list was to come back and again take more art classes. “That is exactly what I am doing,” claims the artist. By the way, Betty had given the ceramic piece to Ziegler as a gift of gratitude and years later, after Linda passed away, her daughter contacted Betty and sent the piece back to her. “That is an example of how art changed my life, that and my very special journalism teacher. And my ceramics teacher, Nancy McCain, who taught me how to throw on the ceramics wheel,” explains Betty. Betty finds inspiration in travel and enjoys visiting museums. She has been to the Louvre, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Getty, the Legion of Honor Museum, and the Chicago Field Museum of Natural History. On a trip to Italy, she had the opportunity to saunter the streets, explore the churches,
statues, ancient buildings, and magnificent fountains. Betty is a member of the Tyler Museum of Art and enjoys going to the exhibits and attending events showcasing artists. “These classes have me painting and working in clay again. I always say I’m going to paint at home, but I never do unless it is for class. My brother-in-law, Rodger Helt, is a very talented artist who has made his living as an artist and my daughter Kristin Clement is an elementary art teacher in the Dallas Area,” states Betty. Besides starting her career at 50 as TJC’s first Alumni Director, Briggs has volunteered for everything from Blue Bird leader to fifth grade Art Mom. She has been in charge of the TJC Charitable Giving Campaign. For many years she also organized TJC employee volunteers for the United Way Day of Caring and Ringing the Bell for the Salvation Army. Betty has served on numerous boards including United Way, Sister Cities, ARK, Tyler Executive Women’s Network (TEWN), Champions for Children, and Women of Tyler. “I enjoy being on campus again. Seeing old friends and making new friends with the students in my classes. It is always such a diverse group. Some of my classmates are very talented art majors, and some students have managed to squeeze in a fun class among their required core classes. This fall, when I once again signed up for my art classes, the TJC lady assisting me said, ‘I bought one of your paintings, and it’s hanging in my office,’ I felt like I had just won the grand prize,” she exclaims.

This Month at Tyler Museum of Art:
TMA Celebrates Season of Giving with Letitia Huckaby’s Lagniappe The Tyler Museum of Art (TMA) is located at
1300 S. Mahon Ave. on the Tyler Junior College main campus. Regular TMA hours are 10am-5pm Tuesday-Saturday, and 1-5pm Sunday. The Museum is closed Mondays and most major holidays. For more info call the museum at (903)595-1001, tylermuseum.org, or email info@ tylermuseum.org. Family faith and tradition are front and center in the Tyler Museum of Art’s major exhibition of the holiday season, “Lagniappe: Works by Letitia Huckaby,” open to the public Sunday, December 16th-March 17th in the TMA’s North Gallery. Admission is free. Members and special guests are invited for a first look at the exhibition as part of its Donor Appreciation Holiday Party from 5:30-7pm Saturday, December 15th at the Museum. To RSVP or for information on becoming a TMA member, call (903)595-1001, visit tylermuseum. org, or follow on Facebook at facebook.com/Tyler. Museum.Of.Art. Organized by the TMA and curated by Caleb Bell, Lagniappe highlights the recent work of an artist who fuses photography, quilting, silk screening, and a vast expanse of media with a distinctly regional sensibility but worldwide appeal, primarily exploring her own family history and African-American heritage. Lagniappe is a term prevalent in the Louisiana French Creole culture, loosely defined as “a small gift given to a customer by a merchant at the time of a purchase,” or “something given or obtained gratuitously or by way of good measure.” Bell said he and the artist decided on this regional term as the exhibition’s main title because it encapsulates the sense of community and kinship that is a prevalent theme in Huckaby’s work. “The basic premise behind my work is faith, family, and legacy,” she said. “I am always looking at how the past relates to the present, and whether or not things have changed or remain the same. There is always a history built into the pieces, whether through the process or actual materials. I often use heirloom fabrics, and I think that is why so many people can relate to my work.” As a natural extension of someone who began

her career as a photojournalist, Huckaby said she remains “a photographer at heart,” starting each new work with an image as the foundation and evolving from there into printing on cotton fabric, handstitched together into traditional African-American quilting patterns and finished into quilts, dresses, sacks, or framed quilt tops. “I love pushing the boundaries of photography by using a traditional practice in an untraditional way and hopefully creating a new visual language,” she said. Huckaby received her master’s degree at the University of North Texas in 2010, and since has exhibited at venues including Dallas Contemporary, Galveston Arts Center, Renaissance Fine Art in Harlem, and the Texas Biennial at the Blue Star Contemporary in San Antonio.
