Welcome to Dr. Factenstein’s Trivia:

Best Seafood in East Texas!

A Night of Lively FamilyFriendly Fun For All Ages By Barbara Greenbauer

Are you a tried and true trivia buff, or know just enough to yell out the answers to Jeopardy questions? Either way, you will love the high energy experience of Dr. Factenstein’s Trivia, an interactive evening of brain teasers, laughs, and high spirits. Dr. Factenstein (also known as Kris Price) brings to the table a huge passion for all things trivial and a sense of humor and energy that is unstoppable. Dr. Factenstein makes quite an entrance, garbed in a white lab coat, goggles, and assorted paraphernalia. And with that, let the games begin! The night we were visiting, he was leading the audience in an hour of thoughtful mayhem at Bruno’s Pizza on Old Jacksonville Hwy. in Tyler, where patrons can eat, drink, and play trivia at the same time. The concept is simple: a venue or restaurant signs on to host the high-energy trivia show and it’s a win/win for everybody! The host provides gift cards for prizes that the teams enthusiastically vie for throughout the hour and guests play right from the comfort of their table. Kris is new in town, but brings a world of experience to his “Dr. Factenstein” business and wants “folks to come out to a totally familyfriendly, put your phones down, experience like no other.” The night begins with some simple instructions, with a strict “no phones or cheating policy” - no technology is allowed. Each team is encouraged to make up a catchy name and is equipped with score pads and pencils. The road map for the night is pretty easy: a classic trivia experience with three categories, including topics like video games, plants, animals, Disney, instruments, and sports. Dr. Factenstein reads the categories and the fun starts. You can jump ahead of the pack before the game even begins and get an extra point by tagging your location in social media and the fact that you are playing the game. There are four rounds in a game, and even early on the excitement is fast and furious. Most of the tables in the dining room are engaged and in deep discussion on their collaborative answer. Dr. Factenstein announces a final minute and answers are run up to the front of the room for tabulation. When the correct answer is announced, the room erupts in yells, cheers, high fives … and some groans too. It is a totally family-friendly atmosphere and kids are encouraged to participate. The Stovall family from Bullard is really into the game, with the young sons in the family racing against time to get their answers in. Melissa Stovall said, “We didn’t know about the trivia game when we came in to eat but the kids are really excited and having a ton of fun.” The excitement of high stakes competition is in the air as Dr. Factenstein announces the next category, a movie audio clip, which immediately has the crowd whispering to their teammates. Dr. Factenstein reiterates that there is one answer per table and no shouting of answers is allowed. Dr. Factenstein hosts different versions of

the trivia extravaganza including “Opinionation” (think Family Feud), where 100 people are surveyed and players guess the most popular answers. This makes for great family input because answers are totally subjective. A different twist to the game is that players can use their phones all night because it’s impossible to find the answers to the survey anywhere online! “Trivia Bingo” isn’t just for old folks! It’s a bingo game, interwoven with trivia questions between games to spice things up a notch. Four games of Bingo are played in one hour, and guests can join at any point and never be behind. There’s also a riotous contest designed for gaming and sci-fi fans. “Question Quest” abandons all the standard categories like history, geography, and sports in favor of Star Trek, Nintendo, and Doctor Who questions geeks and nerds will love. As the hour winds down on the night we attended (and the good Dr. is very strict about the timing), the energy is running high. The final question is upon us, with bidding from each team anywhere from 0-20 points. This time, you can be wrong and the bid will be subtracted from the final score. Pens are down, answers are in and the scores are very close. The team called Potent Potables took top honors that night, and received their prize amongst cheers and a lot of whooping and hollering. The top three teams are all winners and had a great time proving their trivia prowess. Dr. Factenstein’s weekly trivia schedule looks like this: • Tuesdays (7-8pm): Bruno’s Pizza (15770 Old Jacksonville Hwy., Tyler) - Variety Trivia • Wednesdays (7-8pm): Fuzzy’s Tacos (6361 Old Jacksonville Hwy., Tyler) - Traditional Trivia • Wednesdays (7-8pm): The Porch at ETX Brewing Co. (221 S. Broadway, Downtown Tyler) - Opinionation • Thursdays (7-8pm): Taqueria El Lugar on the Square (111 W. Ferguson St., Downtown Tyler) - Trivia Bingo For more info, you can call (903)326-9937 or send an email to Dr.Factenstein@gmail.com for more information. Dr. Factenstein is constantly adding new venues and times, so check him out on Facebook (facebook.com/DrFactenstein). The good Dr. also posts a special clue to the evening’s lineup so it’s always a good idea to take a look before you go. Dr. Factenstein also offers the trivia experience tailored especially for weddings, schools, corporate events, fundraisers, and youth groups. “We are dedicated to helping local businesses receive more customers and providing a fun and interactive evening of entertainment, free of screens and technology where folks can bond and just come closer together,” said Dr. Factenstein. Swing by and play … it will be an unexpected bonus to your evening meal, and you’ll leave with a smile on your face and maybe even a trivia triumph!

The 2019 East Texas Auto & Cycle Show benefiting the East Texas Crisis Center (ETCC) will be celebrating its 29th year. The show opens at Harvey Convention Center, 2000 W. Front St. in Tyler on Friday, February 15th and runs through Sunday, February 17th. From humble beginnings in 1991 when the first show and car raffle raised $20,000, the show now raises over $150,000 in net proceeds for the East Texas Crisis Center each year. This year, the show brings in vehicles of all makes and from every decade: some very rare, some from car enthusiasts who own vast collections of cars, and some from those who have owned or purchased the one “dream car” from their youth. Each year ETCC selects a theme for the show every year, and this year’s theme is “Viper Invasion.” Come down to celebrate the history of this unmistakable American Icon with some of the rarest Vipers in the world. This year’s Feature Car is a 2017 Dodge Viper ACR. This car is from the 1 of 1 Program Dodge offered on its Vipers the last year they were made. There is no other Viper exactly like it. The owner picked all of the features and colors to customize the car to his specifications. He was modeling the car after a 1955 Belair. The color is Custom Turquoise and the engine is a 9 Liter (549ci) V-10

Extreme Stroker. The show features an exciting car to be raffled off at the close of the show. The 2019 raffle car is a 1962 Thunderbird. This will be the sixteenth year that Tyler Ford has donated a car. Tickets are only $10 each and all of the proceeds benefit the East Texas Crisis Center due to the generosity of Tyler Ford! Live entertainment will reflect the music of the same era featuring Matt and Megan Magill on Saturday and The Tyler All-Star Band with their special brand of 60’s rock & roll. New this year, The Viper Autocross Thrill Ride is your chance to experience this exotic, powerful and expensive car from the passenger seat. Each ride costs $20 and consists of 2 laps at the Harvey Convention Parking lot. There will be about six Vipers in the thrill ride lineup to choose from. All proceeds from the ride benefits the East Texas Crisis Center. The show is Friday, February 17th (5-9pm), Saturday, February 16th (9am-7pm), Sunday, February 17th (9am-4pm). Tickets are $10 for adults and children 10 and under are free. For more info go to autoandcycleshow.com.

“Blown Art Exhibit” at Smith County Historical Society

Come to Smith County Historical Society to view “Blown Egg Art Exhibit,” a collection of Dr. Kerfoot Walker and family created over a period of many years by Tyler’s “Easter Egg Lady,” Nell Burnett. There are approximately 180 hand-blown eggs painted and decorated with whimsical characters on “eggshibit.” The collection was donated to the Historical Society by Dr. Kerfoot Walker and family, longtime residents of Tyler, Texas. The Walkers and their three children (now adults) collected the eggs for many years. The late Nell Burnett, known as Tyler’s Easter Egg Lady, was the original artist. She began painting the eggs as a pastime during an illness in the 1930’s. Soon it became a family craft and her daughter, Carolyn Rozell, has carried on the tradition and still paints these adorable eggs. Carolyn has supplemented her mother’s collection by donating another 30 eggs that she has created. Each egg has details and beauty that, like any art, can only be truly appreciated when seen up close and in person. This is a creative exhibit that adults and children will enjoy. The exhibit will run until April 27th. Smith County Historical Society is located at 125 S. College Ave. in the historic Carnegie Library building, Downtown Tyler. For more info call (903)592-5993.

Win $5000 By Getting Healthy & Losing Weight Want to get paid to lose weight and be more

healthy? It’s not too late to join the 7th Annual Lighten Up East Texas city-wide 2019 challenge. The “Weigh-In” period runs through Thursday, February 28th. People who have lost at least 5% of their starting weight before the end of April 2019 will be entered into the Grand Prize Drawings that will be held at the Fit City Tyler Celebration Event in May 2019. The math is simple: every registered person who loses at least 5% of their registered starting weight will become eligible for the Grand Prize drawings. For example, someone with a starting weight of 200 pounds could earn one entry by losing 10 pounds. That’s right, for losing 10 pounds you could possibly win $5000. Weigh-in locations in Tyler and dates are Carter Blood Care (815 S. Baxter), Center for Healthy Living (2815 Frankston Hwy.), CHRISTUS Health & Fitness Center (3593 E. Grande Blvd.), Glass Rec Center (501 W. 32nd St.), iLoveKickboxing (5526 Old Jacksonville Hwy.), NET Health WIC Clinic (225 E. Amherst or 815 N. Broadway), TJC Ornelas Health & PE Center (1199 S. Palmer), or UT Health Olympic Center (701 Olympic Plaza). For hours please refer to fitcitytyler.com. Other locations outside of Tyler are available on the website. Participants must weigh out by returning to any weighing location between April 22nd-30th. A full list of weighing locations throughout east Texas that are open to the public is available at LUET.org. Lighten Up East Texas is open to all who live in East Texas.

Additional Chances to Win

Fit City Tyler has added a new program by including the annual It’s Time TEXAS Community Challenge (ITTCC) as a part of the 2019 Lighten Up East Texas (LUET) regional weight loss challenge. After you sign up to enter LUET, you will also need to create a free online account at ITTCommunityChallenge.com and collect at least 5000 points by doing multiple activities that will demonstrate your ability to live healthy. ITTCC will run through Sunday, March 3rd. Here’s how to earn points: • Submit your fitness activities twice a day with the Activity Tracker or connect your Map My

Fitness/Fit Ranking Activity Tracker and get credit for up to two logged workouts per day (100 points per bout of activity/workout) • Track your weight with the Weekly Weight Tracker (100 points once per week) • Watch the Living Healthier Video (200 points) • Upload a Healthy Selfie: Exercise & Fitness Photo 2x/day (200 points per upload) • Upload a Healthy Selfie: Eating Healthy Photo 5x/day (200 Points per upload) All entrants who collect at least 5000 points in the “It’s Time TEXAS Community Challenge” will have their LUET entries doubled for the Grand Prize drawings. For example, if a person loses between 5% - 9.9% of their weight, they would already receive 1 ticket into the LUET Grand Prize Drawings, but if they also collect 5000+ points in the ITTCC, then they would receive 2 tickets. If a person loses between 10% - 14.9% of their weight, they would already receive 2 tickets into the LUET Grand Prize Drawings, but if they also collect 5000+ points in the ITTCC, then they would receive 4 tickets. It is very possible for an entrant of LUET 2019 to collect more than 5000 points within the ITTCC! In addition, the ITTCC has a School Competition, so that your child(ren) and your school campus could win a $1,500 minigrant to support campus health activities. On the second Saturday of every month, people from all over converge on Downtown Tyler for Hit the Bricks. Downtown Tyler will be bursting with family fun, entertainment, music, food, history tours, art, and of course, the chance to check out a great locallyowned restaurant, bar, or retail establishment. Junk Hippy is a family-owned and operated business, established in 2012 and known for their appearances all over Oklahoma and Texas. Shops, cafes, weddings, and nurseries have been put together with finds from Junk Hippy shows. Music Karisia Hernandez: Learning To Fly By Johnny Griffith

It’s easy to be impressed with the resume of Karisia Hernandez. This past year alone, she was nominated in three categories at the ETX Music Awards, taking home two honors. Oh, and she had only been performing publically for about a year when she was originally nominated. Now add in the fact she’s only 18, and on top of teaching herself piano at age 13, and guitar a couple of years later, she’s also a senior at Tatum High school, a Lieutenant of the Tatum Drill Team Eaglettes and the Vice President of the Tatum Drama Club. Yeah, impressive is an understatement. Now, fresh off releasing her first single AND a video back in November, Karisia is geared up for the last half of her senior year, and she isn’t content to just sit back and look at the trophies on the shelf, she’s intent on continuing to make her mark on the local and regional music scene. She took time out of her busy schedule this month to answer some questions for us about her journey so far and what’s in store for her next. Johnny: What is your first memory of music in your life? Karisia: Besides my mother singing Spanish lullabies to me, my first recollection of music was in our church. When I was young, our church in Tatum was very small and had no choir. So, my mother and my aunts and uncles made up our church choir. I remember my aunt would play the bass, my uncles would play their guitars, and my mother sang. Johnny: When do you recall first taking an interest in being an artist? Karisia: In the summer of 2010, we had family members that would travel for work across the state stay at our house in between jobs. In their younger years, however, they had a Tejano band. They performed around Texas in the 1980s. Anyway, while they stayed at our house they would stay up all night singing and playing songs. I remember them telling stories about touring and how many people they had met and places that they saw. I think that I took an interest in becoming an artist listening to those stories, thinking about how cool they were. They use to kid me and say, “Let us be your roadies!” or “Let’s buy a bus and we’ll take you to sing.” To this day they will call out of the blue and ask if I’m ready to purchase that bus! Johnny: Who has been one of the biggest influences musically in your life to this point? Karisia: Billie Eilish. Definitely. She is such a well-rounded artist on so many levels. Her voice is crazy good and her lyrics are incredible. I am absolutely in love with her songs and how they sound. It’s like she can put any thought into words perfectly and her musicality is amazing. So, basically, every time I write a song I think about her songs and think, “Okay, this is your goal.” Not that I want my music to sound like hers, but she definitely inspires me.

14 • EGuideMagazine.com

Johnny: When was your first public performance? What did you learn from that first experience that has stuck with you? Karisia: Besides open mics and public competitions, the very first place that I was asked to perform was the LifeBridge church for a back to school bash. I only performed one song, “Riptide” by Vance Joy, but to this day I believe that was one of my best performances. One of the things I learned that has struck me is to always be prepared for questions. Whether it be the person that hired you, or the person that announced you, or even people after your performance. People always have questions, and you have to be prepared for them. If not, you’ll end up stuttering for forever! I know I do! To this day, even if I am prepared for a question I always say “um” in almost every sentence. It’s something I’m working on. Johnny: At what point did you think this might be something you’d want to take a little more seriously than just a hobby? Karisia: Well, I always sang here and there at family reunions and such, so people knew that I sang. It wasn’t until a family friend requested a song for me to sing and post that I realized I wanted to take singing more seriously. The video was recorded in a closet with me playing the keyboard and singing and my sister accompanying me. Once we posted it the responses were all so great. I just knew I wanted to entertain people with music. I went to an open mic at Kawa’s where Matt Coats had let me go up and sing a song. I was so nervous! One song and I was trembling. Now, I play three hours and I’m ecstatic coming off stage. I truly love performing. Johnny: Your bio simply describes you as an “alternative” artist, but there are obviously influences from several different genres present as you perform. How would you describe your style to someone about to hear you for the first time? Karisia: From what others have told me, I would say that my style or sound is very easy to listen to. I’ve been told my voice is soft, which that I believe. Genres that I usually listen to and feel my music should be placed in is indie. I think my style fits and leans more that way, anyway. Johnny: At what age did you write your first song? Do you still perform that first song? Karisia: I wrote my very first song at 15 years old sitting in my room with my keyboard in the middle of the night, which, to this day, is about the time that I do most of my writing. The song was called “Pretty Boy” and it was a very upbeat song and sounded very much like a 15-year-old wrote it! Maybe one day, I might go back and rewrite some lyrics and put it out. But for now, no, I don’t perform and have never performed the song live. Yet, it is one of my mother’s favorite originals of mine. Johnny: Being still in high school, have you had any challenges juggling school and music? Karisia: All of the time! There have been multiple occasions where some of my activities overlap and I have to choose one over the other. For example, the date I scheduled to record new music happened to be the same day of my town’s Christmas parade which my drill team participates in. It gets a little hectic sometimes, but I have my mom always pushing me and helping me to stay on track. Honestly, if it wasn’t for her I probably wouldn’t be able to do all the things I do. Johnny: At the 2018 ETX Music Awards you

took home Junior Artist Of The Year and Latin Artist Of The Year. How did it feel be the top of the class in those two categories and what sort of pressure, if any, do you feel to build upon that success? Karisia: Before the awards, I had only been doing music publicly since October of 2017. So, even getting nominated in one category was surprising, let alone three. Taking home two out of three nominations was such an honor. Everyone seemed to know what to say when they went to accept their awards but I was searching for words the first time and didn’t know what to say the second time. It was all so amazing, though. There’s some pressure from winning those awards. Like I have to uphold a reputation, kind of. However, it’s all uphill from here. Everything I do, I make sure it’s at least a little better than what I did before. Each gig, song, cover has to be better in some way. The pressure pushes me, though, in a good way. Johnny: You recently released your first single back in November, “People Bore Me,” and a video to accompany it. What did you learn from that experience that you feel has helped improve you as a performer? Karisia: “People Bore Me” was a song that I performed at the East Texas Music awards. With all the positive responses I got from it, I decided to get it recorded and out. I was blind going into the recording studio and didn’t know what to expect. Thankfully, Orlando Williams, my producer, helped guide me every step of the way. The process was way different than what I was expecting and he pulled me out of my element to get great sounds for the track. Juays Photography is responsible for my music video. The music video also pulled me way out of my comfort zone. I am really shy and awkward so I felt really odd at times, However, they helped me and gave me some tips and overall made my first video really amazing. All of this, recording a song and shooting a video, helped me improve as a performer in a number of ways. I play with different sounds on songs to see what sounds best and now I’m not afraid to make some faces to go along with songs. For the most part, I’m no longer just singing songs, I am performing them. Even if I am sitting down. Johnny: What is on the horizon for you in 2019 that excites you in music? Karisia: For my music career, 2019 is a very exciting year in itself. I will be releasing two more songs in the beginning of April and they sound SO good already even though they aren’t done yet. They are a little different than my first single, but I love them and I am so excited for everyone to listen to them. I also will be moving out of East Texas and closer to the Houston area because I will be attending Sam Houston State University where I will pursue forensics but minor in music. I have already started booking over there for later in the year. I’m very excited to be playing in new venues and growing my audience. 2019 is looking like a record year for awesome concerts in East Texas. These are some we think that you need to know about and get tickets for soon before they sell out.

All concerts are performed at the University of Texas at Tyler, R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center. The concerts begin at 7:30pm. For more info or to purchase tickets, go to etso.org or call (903)566-7424. March 23rd (7:30pm) - The 5 Browns with the ETSO will perform Brahms: Hungarian Dance No. 5 in G minor; Bach: Triple Concerto BWV 1064; mvt 1, Debussy: Clair de Lune; Poulenc: Concerto for Two Pianos in D minor; Muhly: The Edge of the World for Five Pianos and orchestra; and Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue. The 5 Browns enjoyed their first wave of critical attention in February 2002 when “People Magazine” dubbed them the “Fab Five” at about the same time they were featured on Oprah and 60 Minutes. “The New York Post” proclaimed: “One family, five pianos and 50 fingers add up to the biggest classical music sensation in years.” The quintet has garnered extensive coverage from media outlets ranging from The Tonight Show to “The New York Times.” ETSO welcomes back The 5 Browns to perform solos, duets, trios, and their arrangements for all 5 pianos! April 27th (7:30pm) - Grammy®-winner Augustin Hadelich will perform on violin with conductor Richard Lee performing Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto and Schubert: “Great” Symphony in C Major. One of the most acclaimed artists of our time, Augustin Hadelich returns to East Texas to perform perhaps the most famous and demanding violin concerto in the repertory. The Juilliardtrained and Grammy-winning Hadelich describe the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto as one of the “most exciting concertos … a very emotional piece full of character.” Hadelich’s goals regarding the performance of this work include “communicating joy and excitement while balancing Mozartian (perhaps Tchaikovsky’s favorite composer) elegance with heart-on-your-sleeve Romanticism.” The concert and the season conclude with the ETSO premiere of Schubert’s final symphony.

The Day The Music Revived Article and Photography by Michael Culotta

After years of silence from the music scene in downtown Jacksonville, Roland’s Next Door has opened its doors once again. The venue, established nearly twenty-five years ago by Roland and Gayle Brown, returned to life on Friday, December 14th. Thanks to Karen Johnson Cameron and partner Andy Boehmer, who have taken over the reins, music enthusiasts can once again enjoy a room full of music and friends. The Browns opened their doors in 1994 in the attic of Roland’s law office in downtown Jacksonville. It was then called Roland’s Upstairs. It soon gained fame and followers and Roland had to move the monthly event next door, ergo Roland’s Next Door. Since then such entertainers as Chuck Pyle, Beyond the Pale, and Lynn Langham have performed, along with many others. Roland moved his law practice, and Gayle, to Wimberley, Texas a few years back and had to close the doors to the popular showplace. Roland kept up with his music interests, making new friends and playing in venues in and around the Hill Country. Roland is also a well-known figure at the annual Kerrville Music Festival in Kerrville, Texas. Karen had hosted numerous home concerts and rubbed shoulders with many singers and songwriters while living in Dallas. She was instrumental in helping Roland line up artists from around the country to perform at his popular monthly event. Karen fell in love with a particular house and property in Jacksonville and made a casual comment to Roland about reopening the old music hall. She soon made the move from Dallas to Jacksonville, and had hardly unpacked the boxes when she started getting phone calls from musicians asking when they could perform at Roland’s once again. Of course, Roland and Gayle gave their blessings for the reopening of the popular listening room. And that is just what Roland’s is all about. It is a music listening room located at 102 South Ragsdale Street in Downtown Jacksonville. Roland’s was enjoyed and then missed by many music lovers

around the area. Now, the music has returned. As the lights dimmed on the night of December 14th, Karen welcomed everyone and announced a partial lineup of artists for the beginning of 2019. She then passed the mic to Roland. After some very touching and heartfelt words of appreciation to Karen, Andy, and many of the loyal Next Door followers, Roland offered up some familiar songs by fellow songwriters he admires, as well as some of his own original creations. Then guests were treated to a selection of inspirational and thoughtful music by a very popular Next Door artist, Tom Prasada-Rao. This singer/songwriter has graced the stage quite a number of times and mesmerized his audience with well-crafted songs and unexpected humor. Karen and Andy are keeping Gayle’s tradition of offering coffee, tea, and treats during intermission. As usual, many fans bring their own instruments for an after-concert picking circle. You don’t want to miss this new Downtown Jacksonville experience. Come on over to Roland’s Next Door, 102 South Ragsdale Street, and relax and enjoy the music. Doors open at 6:30pm and concerts start at 7pm. There is a suggested donation of $20 at the door. RSVP to (214)794-0706. This is a family-friendly listening room. No alcohol allowed. Be sure to mark these upcoming dates on your calendar: • February 16th: Tom Kimmel • March 8th: John Gorka

A New Folk winner at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 1993, he began performing solo, stressing a lean, acoustic approach to his music and bringing a humorous spirit to his poetry and storytelling. Tom Kimmel is a unique artist who continues to write, record, entertain and inspire at the highest levels! Also scheduled this season are: • March 23rd: Jacob Johnson • April 6th: Edie Carey

Ray Anthony’s arsenal of talent extends beyond look and voice. As an accomplished musician/songwriter, his knowledge of the high-tech, fast-paced music industry is unlimited. A gifted guitarist, Ray also plays bass, piano, and drums. “My best musical work is from the 50’s and 60’s, but I listen to everything,” he says. Before joining the award-winning live tribute show Legends in Concert, Ray performed his high energy tribute to Valens in shows across Canada, the US, and Mexico, and received personal accolades from Ritchie Valens’ original producer-manager Bob Keane of Del-Fi Records. Bob is very impressed with Ray’s portrayal of his star and is pleased Ritchie’s memory is being kept alive in such a professional manner. Ray says, “It’s amazing what happens to the audience when I sing Ritchie Valens’ songs. They get very excited and want to dance out of their seats to join in. I love that part.” Ray’s breathtaking portrayal of Valens brings captivated fans to their feet and scores rave reviews from critics. “La Bamba,” created in detail from the movie of the same name, is the highlight of his tribute. “I want the audience who did not know or recognize Ritchie to relive that time through my work,” Ray says. Special guests are Shake Rattle & Roll featuring ultimate tribute band Spinout and opening performer Dale ‘C’ Cummings. The concert is at the Gilmer Civic Center at 7pm. materials. I often use heirloom fabrics, and I think that is why so many people can relate to my work.” As a natural extension for someone who began her career as a photojournalist, Huckaby said she remains “a photographer at heart,” starting each new work with an image as the foundation and evolving from there into printing on cotton fabric, hand-stitched together into traditional African-American quilting patterns and finished into quilts, dresses, sacks, or framed quilt tops. “I love pushing the boundaries of photography by using a traditional practice in an untraditional way and hopefully creating a new visual language,” she said. Huckaby received her master’s degree at the University of North Texas in 2010, and since has exhibited at venues including Dallas Contemporary, Galveston Arts Center, Renaissance Fine Art in Harlem, and the Texas Biennial at the Blue Star Contemporary in San Antonio. Her work is featured in numerous public and private collections including the Library of Congress, the Art Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont, and Philadelphia’s Brandywine Workshop. She most recently was featured at the TMA alongside her husband, Sedrick Huckaby, in the 2014 exhibition “Flow into the Mystic: Marriage and the Contemporary Artist.”

An Adventure to Owl Island,

The Fantastic Laminda Miller By Derrick White

“I am a perfectionist and sometimes that has a tendency of getting in the way. I know what I want to convey with my work and how I want it to look, but there are times either the materials or the mechanics are uncooperative. Recently, I have learned sometimes it is better to go with the flow,” reveals local, East Texas sculptor Laminda Miller. Beloved author Beatrix Potter (“Peter Rabbit”) wrote and illustrated “The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin” published in 1903. Potter’s celebrated story of a mischievous squirrel losing his tail is still popular. Squirrel Nutkin with his brother, Twinkleberry, and all their cousins travel to Owl Island to gather nuts until Old Brown, the petrifying owl warden of the island decides he has had enough. Potter’s amusing, animated stories and gorgeous pictures are childhood favorites. Potter created a series of anthropomorphic tales including Mrs. Tiggy-winkle, Benjamin Bunny, and Tom Kitten. These types of beautifully illustrated, fantastic books had an influence on a young Laminda Miller, a talented and prolific artist. “My favorite artist is Beatrix Potter, a British children’s author. Growing up reading her books, I admired the art in her works and her books. My favorite was “Squirrel Nutkin.” Potter’s appreciation for nature is apparent by her attention to detail in her watercolor paintings of mycology subjects,” Laminda remembers. She continues, “I cannot recall any time I did not want to be an artist, as far as I can remember, I was determined to be an artist. As a young child, I would entertain myself by drawing, I was especially interested in the hand-drawn methods of 1930’s animation found in children’s films. My parents are artistic as well, so they have encouraged me in pursuing art, their support has been instrumental in my artistic pursuits.” “The sculptures I make are animal forms found in nature. I use certain aspects of reality such as scale, anatomical features; however, the forms are gestural, so they are reminiscent of whimsical illustrations found in fairytales,” states the artist. Laminda Miller’s art pieces are showstoppers. It is hard to overstate how incredible these sculptures are. Perfectly postured and proportioned personified animal forms created from Styrofoam and epoxy clay with papiermâché, are like storybook characters existing in our three-dimensional world and playing out narratives of mischief, trickery, and masked deceit. Her works are visually tactile, fantastical, and immediately create a Carrollesque storyline. Miller’s craft and attention to detail will keep one visually captivated for a long time. “I use Styrofoam and two-part epoxy clay. I use a heat knife to cut the Styrofoam into an approximate form. On the larger figures, I cut sections then fit them together for the next step. After a rough form is completed, I apply a two-part epoxy clay and sculpt the detailed features,” explains the artist. Recently, one of Laminda’s large-scale works, Once Bitten won both the People’s Choice award and Best of Show in Tyler’s Gallery Main Street exhibition ‘Alternate Perspectives’. The artist also exhibited work at the ‘Inconsistency’ art event hosted by the group East Texas Creatives, a local arts community promoting creative work and collaboration by visual artists, musicians, and poets. The event was held at the former True Vine Brewing Company location on Englewood. This group is trying to overcome some of the obstacles of trying to succeed as an artist by expanding networks and opportunities. “Unless artists have certain resources, it is difficult to get a foothold in the artistic community. Local art politics have improved a good deal. However, artists seemingly have to be politicians in order to promote their work, so I ask shouldn’t art speak for itself? As an artist who is not particularly political or business minded, I have found this aspect of being an artist 20• EGuideMagazine.com

rather frustrating,” describes Miller. She adds, “Art is a form of communication for me. Verbal communication has never been my strongest suit and has helped me in so many ways to communicate ideas, build friendships, show appreciation, and visualize what I want to say.” A young Miller was mostly self-taught because her grade school did not offer established art classes. She also took private lessons from local artists. After graduating high school, Laminda attended Kilgore College, where she majored in art with a minor in education. She recalls, “It was there I learned formal components of art and how diverse art can be.” While attending Kilgore College, Miller worked primarily with two-dimensional media such as painting and mix media. “I had not developed an interest in sculpture yet, but one of my favorite assignments was a group assignment where the professor instructed us to create a society which included artifacts, lore, etc. I made a death mask and journal,” Laminda remembers. After Kilgore College, Laminda Miller enrolled at the University of Texas in Tyler. She states, “I did not have a discipline of art yet but with the encouragement of my professors, I developed an interest in sculpture and learned in-depth art history. My undergraduate work consisted of paper birds and small clay sculptures of other animal forms. After I graduated with my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, I had been accepted for an internship at a private college in Lufkin, so I enrolled in the graduate art program at Stephen F. Austin University. I learned how to make sculptures on a larger scale. When my internship ended I moved back to the Tyler area and was accepted into the University of Texas at Tyler’s graduate program. By using what I learned from S.F.A. I built from experience to make sculptures larger in scale in comparison to my past works.” Laminda’s interests outside of art include reading, theatre, puppetry, and historical European martial arts. She shares, “I enjoy fictional stories, especially the Redwall series by Brian Jacques. I also like to read about Medieval and Renaissance history, in fact, Renaissance art history is one of my favorite courses. My family and I do annual performances for the children’s reading club at our local library which includes illusion, comedy, puppets, and ventriloquism. For recreation, I take sword fighting classes weekly with East Texas Historical Fencing, a martial arts group.” On my next quest adventure to Owl Island or wherever else, I’m asking Laminda to tag along to defend the group and talk to the animals if necessary.

Admission is free. Family, faith, and tradition are front and center in the Tyler Museum of Art’s major exhibition of early 2019, Lagniappe: Works by Letitia Huckaby. Organized by the TMA and curated by Caleb Bell, Lagniappe highlights the recent work of an artist who fuses photography, quilting, silk screening, and a vast expanse of media with a distinctly regional sensibility but worldwide appeal, primarily exploring her own family history and African-American heritage. Lagniappe is a term prevalent in the Louisiana French Creole culture, loosely defined as “a small gift given to a customer by a merchant at the time of a purchase,” or “something given or obtained gratuitously or by way of good measure.” Bell said he and the artist decided on this regional term as the exhibition’s main title because it encapsulates the sense of community and kinship that is a prevalent theme in Huckaby’s work. “The basic premise behind my work is faith, family, and legacy,” she said. “I am always looking at how the past relates to the present, and whether or not things have changed or remain the same. There is always a history built into the pieces, whether through the process or actual

February 1st (10:30am and 12:30pm): “The Ugly Duckling” will be on the stage at The Cowan Center. Light Wire Theater brings their use of cutting edge technology, moving sculpture, and dance to another unforgettable theatrical experience. Hans Christian Andersen’s classic “The Ugly Duckling” has helped generations of children understand one of humanity’s universal struggles. This classic story comes to life in this modern stage production, and offers hope to us all as we root for the ugly duckling who exemplifies resilience and heroism along the way to becoming a beautiful swan. The Cowan Center is located on the campus of UT Tyler at 3900 University Blvd. For more info call (903)566-7424 or go to cowancenter.org. February 7th-10th (Thursday-Saturday at 7pm, Saturday-Sunday at 2pm): “The Girl in the White Pinafore” will be on the stage at Robert E. Lee Theatre. This play, about the New London School Explosion of 1937, is making its regional premiere. The performance on Saturday, February 9th will benefit the London Museum and Café in New London, Texas, which serves as a memorial to the victims and families of victims, as well as a historical record of the deadliest school disaster in the United States, which claimed over 295 students and teachers. A pie and coffee reception will follow the Saturday performance. The Robert E. Lee Theatre is located in the Jan E. Jones Fine Arts Center on the Robert E. Lee campus, ESE Loop 323 in Tyler. For more info email Amy.Clemens@ tylerisd.org. February 8th-10th, 14th-17th (ThursdaySaturday at 7:30pm, Sunday at 2:30pm): “On Golden Pond” will be on the stage at Tyler Civic Theatre. This is the love story of Ethel and Norman Thayer who are returning to their summer home on Golden Pond for the forty-eighth year. He is a retired professor, nearing 80, with heart palpitations and a failing memory—but still as tart-tongued, observant and eager for life as ever. Ethel, ten years younger and the perfect foil for Norman, delights in all the small things that have enriched and continue to enrich their long life together. They are visited by their divorced, middle-aged daughter and her dentist fiancé, who then go off to Europe, leaving his teenage son behind for the summer. The boy quickly becomes the “grandchild” the elderly couple has longed for, and as Norman revels in taking his ward fishing and thrusting good books at him,

he also learns some lessons about modern teenage awareness - and slang - in return. In the end, as the summer wanes, so does their brief idyll, and in the final, deeply moving moments of the play, Norman and Ethel are brought even closer together by the incidence of a mild heart attack. Time, they know, is now against them, but the years have been good and, perhaps, another summer on Golden Pond still awaits. Tyler Civic Theatre is located at 400 Rose Park Dr., Tyler, next to the Tyler Rose Garden Center. For more info call (903)592-0561 or go to tylercivictheatre.com. February 14th (7pm): “Love Letters” featuring The Verona Quartet will be presented at First Presbyterian Church. Hailed by The New York Times as an “outstanding ensemble,” the Verona Quartet - winner of the 2015 Concert Artists Guild Competition - have quickly earned a stellar reputation as one of the most compelling young quartets in chamber music today for their “interpretive strength…robust characterization [and] commanding resonance” (Calgary Herald). Concluding with “Intimate Letters,” Leoš Janácek’s “manifesto on love,” this performance is certain to bring the affairs of the heart into focus on this special evening. Cherie, a nightclub chanteuse in a sparkling gown and a seedy fur-trimmed jacket, is the passenger with most to worry about. She’s been pursued, made love to and finally kidnapped by a 21-year-old cowboy with a ranch of his own and the romantic methods of an unusually headstrong bull. The belligerent cowhand is right behind her, ready to sling her over his shoulder and carry her, alive and kicking, all the way to Montana. Even as she’s ducking out from under his clumsy but confident embraces, and screeching at him fiercely to shut him up, she pauses to furrow her forehead and muse, “Somehow deep inside of me I got a funny feeling I’m gonna end up in Montana.” Tyler Civic Theatre is located at 400 Rose Park Dr., Tyler, next to the Tyler Rose Garden Center. Books

Something Powerful to Consider By Gini Rainey

“Sister Secrets: A Brother’s Reveal” by Matthew Valan

This book is an interesting delve into the memories of a family torn apart by the mental illnesses of two of the author’s sisters. Set in the farmlands of western Minnesota and neighboring North Dakota, Valan began writing this book with the intention to help himself work through the relationships and events that brought one sister to a terrible automobile accident that caused her death, and the other to a point where killing her husband seemed to be the only option she had to be free of her marriage. While terribly sad and tragic, writing this book helped Valan, a Lutheran Minister and respected speaker on the topics of youth, family, and education, sort through his memories and come to a semblance of peace with the history of his sisters, Cordee and Liz. While not necessarily a contributory factor to their psychosis, both sisters were victims of sexual abuse by a farmhand when young, and by the time they reached adulthood, their mental illnesses began wreaking havoc on, not only their lives, but also on the lives of those around them. And while the original purpose of this book was a sort of purge and sorting out of feelings for Valan, it also opens a door on a subject often times not openly discussed in “polite” company that of mental illness. Through his writing, he was able to find a measure of healing from the turmoil and pain created over the years as a result of the actions of his siblings.

If nothing else, this book is an encouragement for anyone who might also have had their life touched by the effects of mental illness, and also proves the healing power that writing down painful memories and happenings can have on the heart and soul. “Destiny’s Grace” by Kirby Roy III

In a book set for release in July 2015, Kirby Roy follows the growth of the friendship of Derrick and Candace as it becomes something much more than they had anticipated. In a quote from Mr. Roy that accompanied his book for my review, he states that “If up to 72% of children are born out of wedlock, then this is a story a lot of women and men can relate to. But since Grace is involved, it is a story filled with belief in the face of doubt.” Basically, this is pretty much the usual boy dates girl, girl sleeps with boy, girl gets pregnant story. None too surprising, it has one of those “one time without protection” scenarios where she gets pregnant. What makes this book completely different is the style with which it is written. I found myself involved in a constant state of verbiage whiplash due to the different “voices” that Mr. Roy has chosen to convey this story of an unexpected pregnancy and its resolution. I’m not sure if I’m the only person that would find the verbiage styling unsettling, but nonetheless I did. Conversations between Derrick and Candace and their friends come are either in the language of the highly educated people they are, or when the girls or the boys are together they slip into a slightly blue side of ethnic language. When their parents are involved, a distinctively different set of vocabulary is used and their personal thoughts, yet another. Running through the whole of it, also, is a major thread of presumed guilt, expectations, and a hope that an all-forgiving grace will take care of all of the conflicts surrounding them. I personally was troubled by the verbiage, but to be perfectly honest, I found it difficult to put this book down because I wanted to see how all of the conflicts would resolve.
