Ready for a new adventure that will test your mental and physical strength, teambuilding, and problem-solving skills, all rolled into one? Tyler Rock Gym (TRG) is the one-of-a kind new climbing arena in East Texas that is designed for both seasoned and firsttime climbers. It’s kind of an awe inspiring sight as you enter the facility, huge 32 foot walls, emblazoned with colorful foot holds, ropes, and people climbing and scaling everywhere. Opening just last month, TRG has already become a haven for climbers and watchers alike creating a climbing oasis with a strong, friendly community. And this community all has one thing in common they want to get to the top, and conquer the walls! Sign a waiver, get some hands on instruction, and orientation from welltrained staff about the harness, auto belays (spotters) and bouldering walls, and you’re ready to go. It’s truly a motivating, positive experience as you witness fathers and sons, mothers and small children alike, encourage each other to reach out, find another route and keep going! Owners Shawn Wilson and David Orchard are the head cheerleaders, welcoming each and every climber, giving them encouragement, and reaching out to make sure everyone is having a great experience. “We have seen such a sense of community grow over the very short time we’ve been open,” said Wilson. “There have been so many different groups enter the doors, from nurses to local business owners, to students from our local colleges, and even from SFA.” All you will need to scale the walls is closed-toed shoes and a harness; other equipment is available for rent at their pro shop, including rock climbing shoes and chalk. You will be taught “how to fall safely” and then it’s up to you to choose a route on one of the massive walls in the over 10,500 square foot climbing surface. “Every five or six weeks we will change out the routes on the walls, so it becomes a whole new challenge,” explained Orchard. “Our goal is to help people enjoy the sport that we fell in love with.” There are more than 11 different levels of difficulty, with the lower levels designed specifically for kids. All children 13 and younger must be supervised, but on this Saturday, it’s clear that families are in this together as the kids climb higher and the parents encourage enthusiastically from the mats. Katy Kohls and Luke Kanclerz have already joined as members and “have climbed other places, but we love the social and family atmosphere here,” said Kohls. “We get into the climbing zone, and it’s almost like a time warp.
We turned around and we’ve been here almost all day, climbing, talking, and helping other climbers problem solve.” This sport is so much more than just climbing a wall. It’s about endurance, problem solving and team-building. Groups sit at the base of a wall, pointing and gesturing to a fellow climber, trying to figure out the puzzle of where to position, how to climb, and the next step. A father acts as the belay for his young son as he encourages him not to give up and try again to get up to the top. “This sport just has so many benefits,” explains Orchard. “You don’t have to be a superb athlete to participate, and it is great for all ages. We have a 4 year old climbing today with his mother, and we have a 70 year old man who has been climbing with us regularly.” Tyler Rock Gym is a great escape for birthday parties or corporate team-building events and offers memberships that include exclusive climbing hours, special discounts, and even member get-togethers and special events (the latest member treat was a pancake breakfast.) Corey Valverde and her 4 year old son, Izri, were having a blast, and Izri was totally fearless, scrambling up the wall at a fast pace. “We had heard about the rock gym opening,” said Valverde, “and were so excited to have somewhere to exercise all year round that we could do as a family and have fun at the same time.” Bouldering is a different kind of climb; no ropes, just sheer determination and willpower. The bouldering walls are 15 feet high and have 80 different routes and angles for climbers to navigate. “There are a lot of different ways and types of climbs in this one gym,” said Orchard. “Climbers that are very experienced have said it’s a great challenge and workout and they keep coming back.” There are also a variety of different options to choose as far as time commitment. Climbers can purchase a one-day membership, a punch card, or a monthly membership. The one day membership includes re-entry at any time, so you can climb, leave, and return at any time the gym is open for business. An all day adult pass (ages 13 and up) is $16.95, and kids 4-12 can climb for $12.95. Basic rental gear runs from $8 for harness and shoes, harness alone is $4, $5 for just shoes, and $10 for a complete kit of shoes, harness and chalk. If you don’t feel like climbing, but just want to come in, encourage, and watch, it is free when you sign a waiver. “We are just so thrilled to be able to offer East Texans a different way to spend their time,” said Orchard. “The benefits of rock climbing, whether indoor or outdoor, are incredible and the opportunity to spend quality time with your family in a fun, friendly, healthy atmosphere is a bonus.” Come and climb the walls at Tyler Rock Gym, located at 4580 Old Troup Hwy., Tyler. You can reach them at (903)705-0074 or at tylerrockgym. com or on Facebook at “tylerrockgym.” Hours are Monday-Friday 12noon-10pm, Saturday 11am-10pm, and Sunday 1-7pm.

Cowan Center. Getting away with murder can be so much fun…and there’s no better proof than the hilarious hit show that won the 2014 Tony Award® for Best Musical, “A Gentleman’s Guide To Love & Murder.” As one most gentlemanly NPR critics put it, “I’ve never laughed so hard at a Broadway musical!” “A Gentleman’s Guide” tells the uproarious story of Monty Navarro, an heir to a family fortune who sets out to jump the line of succession by eliminating the eight pesky relatives who stand in his way… and be done in time for tea. This is for mature audiences. Sales begin January 8th. Tickets are $42-$67. February 12th (7:30pm) - “Million Dollar Quartet” will be presented at The Cowan Center. “Million Dollar Quartet” is the smash hit Broadway musical, inspired by the true story of the famed recording session that brought together rock ‘n roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins for the first and only time. On December 4th, 1956, these four young musicians were gathered together by Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ‘n Roll” at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest jam sessions of all time. “Million Dollar Quartet” timeless hits include “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “That’s All Right,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “I Walk the Line,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Hound Dog,” and more. Sales begin January 22nd. Tickets are $32-$67. February 27th (7:30pm) - “Complexions: Bach to Bowie” will be presented at The Cowan Center. Combining the best of athleticism, lyricism, technical training, and experience, “Complexions” awakens audiences to a new, exciting genre with their singular approach of reinventing dance through a ground-breaking mix of methods, styles, and cultures. This innovative dance company is at it again with their latest creation “Bach to Bowie.” The Bowie part of the evening is entitled “Star Dust” and will feature, as you might expect, daredevil dancing, a hip soundtrack, glam rock costumes, and innovative stagecraft. Let’s Get Your Finances in Order in 2018 “The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness” by Dave Ramsey The success stories in this book speak for themselves from money maestro Dave Ramsey. Instead of promising the normal dose of quick fixes, Ramsey offers a bold, no-nonsense approach to money matters, providing not only the how-to but also a grounded and uplifting hope for getting out of debt and achieving total financial freedom. Ramsey debunks many myths of money (exposing the dangers of cash advance, rent-to-own, debt consolidation) and attacks the illusions and downright deceptions of the American dream, which encourages nothing but overspending and massive amounts of debt. “Don’t even consider keeping up with the Jones,” Ramsey declares in his typically candid style. “They’re broke!” “The Total Money Makeover” concept that Ramsey explains isn’t just theory either. It works every single time he promises, because it is a simple approach to both getting out of debt, and living a life without debt. “My brother gave me this book after he read it and it inspired him to make changes in his financial life. I have debt, but I never considered it a big deal because I thought ‘everyone has debt, it’s a part of life.’ However, it does cause stress and has stopped me from doing things I wish I could. After reading ‘The Total Money Makeover,’ I have a clear concise plan and am excited to tackle my debt and pay it off, build my savings, plus start my retirement fund,” said Kristie Monk. “This book really helped me make a plan.” “The Millionaire Next Door: The Surprising Secrets of America’s Wealthy” by Thomas J. Stanley and William D. Danko The point of this book comes through loud and clear - the people that we think are millionaires are more than likely swimming in debt. Just because you live in a fancy neighborhood and drive an expensive car does not make you rich. In fact, it goes as far as to say that most millionaires live in less costly areas because it costs less money! In fact, their study showed 37 percent of the millionaires bought used cars [opposed to new] and paid cash for everything, of course. Now, their used cars may be Mercedes but they save on the depreciation of the person that bought it new. That concept totally makes sense but is not something that is usually pointed out by the financial world around us. People tend to spend more than they make, making it nearly impossible to accumulate wealth. We love the message of this book, and their is extensive research used to back it up. This is a great read as well as very eye-opening.

Music Chris Wallace & The Delta Blues: Delivering The Goods By Johnny Griffith There are voices...then there are voices. The kind that reaches down into your soul, grabs it, and pulls it out through your ears by sheer will. The kind that the blues gods reach down and bestow upon an individual very rarely, and even then, most don’t know what to do with the power of such a gift. That’s Chris Wallace and The Delta Blues! Originally from East Texas, Wallace picked up the guitar at an early age and spent most of his formative years listening to such blues essentials as Buddy Guy, BB King, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Taj Mahal, and many others. Along the way he discovered he also had a voice that could call down the thunder and the lightning which, when combined with a natural blues guitar talent, created an experience that one must witness in person to fully appreciate. Wallace eventually joined forces with three other equally gifted musicians and formed The Delta Blues and they’ve been burning up stages in the area ever since. The band is comprised of Robert Cheek on drums, Garland Moore on bass, and Steve Howell on lead guitar. Their bio page reads like something out of a comic book, with these cats as the obvious heroes of the story. “Chris is from East Texas originally. He got into music early at the age of 5 or 6 when he started learning to play guitar. Chris is usually spending time with his wife and 2-year-old daughter when not doing music. His influences are Buddy Guy, BB King, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Taj Mahal, and so forth.” Robert Cheek is originally from Mabank, Texas. He moved to the Tyler area to pursue an education in music as a percussionist at University of Texas at Tyler. He first got involved with music by joining band in the 6th grade. He taught drums and percussion as an assistant band director at Frankston ISD in Frankston Texas. “Music has always been a hobby and a passion so I turned it into a career. Other than that, I spend my time with my wife Brandi and three boys Tristan, Walter, and Adrian.” Roberts influences are Levon Helm and The Band, Benny Greb, Carter Beauford, and Stewart Copeland, just to name a few. Steve Howell has been playing guitar since he could hold one. Classically trained in music, and a music teacher at Rockwall Schools, he has brought a great amount of knowledge to the group. Steve has a passion to write songs which
is great, because The Delta Blues has a lot of things coming for 2018 in that regard. He loves everything music. Steve’s influences include Son house, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Billy Gibbons, and the likes. Garland Moore was forged out of what can only be considered pure grit, raw talent, and brilliant Irish whiskey. Learning to play guitar with his friends and jamming in the funky bars in and around Waco, “G-Mo” made the move to bass and never looked back. He earned his stripes through various musical excursions in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and onward thru the fog. In his free time, Garland loves to shoot his guns, fish, and restore classic cars. His influences are Carol Kay, Harvey Brooks, Ray Brown, Bob Mosley, Edgar Mayer, and Donald Dunn. I recently sat down with The Delta Blues to get a better idea of how they came to be and where they are going: Johnny: How did the band meet? The Delta Blues: Chris and Garland ventured in other project together for several years until finally landing Robert and Steve today that create a sound like no other “blues” band around. Johnny: Why “The Delta Blues Band?” Was there intent with the name selection, or did it just sound catchy? The Delta Blues: There was intent on the name and we had many to decide from along the lines of “blue or blues something another,” but the Delta Blues Band stuck with us, so we just rolled with it. Johnny: Why that style of music? It’s certainly not a style that gets the most real estate on stages around the area. What led you to your sound? The Delta Blues: We all love the blues and what it represents. Our foundation is blues but it’s kicked up a notch. So even though blues isn’t a huge market here, we didn’t want to play one certain style just to get gigs. Chris’ vocals and style of playing is really the center of our sound. He has that ‘bigger than life’ voice and stage presence that captivates an audience. His upbringing is as blues/rock/country as it gets. His dad is a prominent musician in his own right and the blues just seem to run in Chris’ blood. Mix that with the awe-inspiring talent and experience of Steve and Garland playing guitar and bass, with a little simple groove and shuffle from Robert on drums, and you got The Delta Blues. Johnny: Who are some of the significant influences musically for the band? The Delta Blues: Buddy Guy is a big one for our front man Chris. He makes the shows fun and entertaining for the crowds. We just love any band that puts on a show when you see them live. For us, we can hear the music on a CD at the house, but if you can’t put the mojo on the crowd live then you are doing it wrong. Johnny: What was your first gig as Chris Wallace and The Delta Blues Band? The Delta Blues: The Purple Pig on Hwy. 155 was our first gig as Chris Wallace and The Delta

February 16th at Liberty Hall That Is We all have memories of watching the “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll” perform “Hound Dog” on The Ed Sullivan Show and listening to his music — this February, you can hear the classics being performed live! Elvis Presley Tribute Artist, Travis Powell, invites fans to come see “One Night with Elvis,” taking place February 16th at 7pm at Liberty Hall, 103 E. Erwin St., Downtown Tyler. Tickets are available at libertytyler.com. During the concert, Powell will perform Elvis’ 1968 Comeback Special, and 1970 Concert Years, while putting on his best Elvis impersonations. Singing classics, wearing the king’s famous costumes, and putting on a winning smile, Powell stated that East Texas should be ready for an unforgettable performance. “Elvis was one of the greatest entertainers ever…. audience members should expect to have fun and go back in time to the 70’s. The audience is going to get the closest tribute that I can give to them, one that is worth watching,” Powell told EGuide Magazine. His love for performing started when his family opened the doors to Southern gospel 14 • EGuideMagazine.com
Blues Band. That was our ‘knocking the dust-off gig’ as they say. It was a small gig - maybe 30 to 40 people. We had a great time and had some mighty fine BBQ too! Johnny: In an area that is traditionally dominated musically by country and rock acts, have there been any challenges getting gigs and building a base for a blues band? The Delta Blues: There was a challenge getting it up and running. In the beginning stages, it is tough to get gigs. But once the show is over, we always get welcomed back. There are a lot of places around here that want to hear us. We put on a great show. It’s getting these clubs now days to take a chance on something different that’s challenging. Johnny: Are you guys typically local to the East Texas area or do you venture out into other markets at this point? The Delta Blues: We’ve stayed pretty local, but I think we’d all be willing to travel some. It would depend on if the situation was right all around and we all agreed to it. We generally make gig decisions as a group. We clear everything through each other. For instance: pay, lodging arrangements, and schedules would all have to line up to everyone’s expectations before taking on any gig no matter the distance. We totally work as a team. Johnny: What has been the most memorable gig for the band to this point? The Delta Blues: We must give X’LN a shout out. When The Delta Blues Band plays there, it’s just pure chemistry between us and the crowd. We always bring the house down and have a few people that love to get up with us and sing. We want every gig to be memorable for our audience. You get people involved and engaged music to him as a child growing up in Shelby, North Carolina. His grandmother highly encouraged him to pursue his passion and even made him his very own Elvis jumpsuit, giving him inspiration to fall back on. Over time, Powell became an entertainer, performing, and touring across the country. One of the biggest highlights in Powell’s career as a tribute artist started in 2012, when he competed in his first “Elvis Tribute Artist Contest.” He also entered “The Legends in Concert Myrtle Beach Elvis Tribute Contest” in 2013 and was crowned the Grand Champion representing legends that year in the ultimate “Elvis Tribute Artist Contest” in Memphis. That same year, he was awarded as the Grand Champion of the “Lake George Elvis Festival,” “Elvis Rocks Mesquite Competition,” and “Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Elvis Tribute Contest.” In 2014, he won the “Ultimate Preliminary Contest” at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and once again participated in the “2014 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Contest” where he made the top five. Travis received the “2014 Heart of the King Horizon Award” and sang on the same stage Elvis once graced, The International, in Las Vegas. He is the champion of the “2016 Tribute to the King Contest,” taking home the grand prize of $25,000 – the largest of any

Our motto is “We give our ‘all’ whether there are three people in the crowd or 300,” but if we happen to get the three, that gives us a chance to really mold any new songs we have never done live or just put on a good jam. Johnny: What does 2018 have in store for The Delta Blues? Any projects or tour plans? The Delta Blues: We are working on an all original CD now. We have five or six great tunes so far. We want to do about ten songs. We are hoping that the CD will help us book more gigs through the year. Johnny: For new fans, what can they expect at a show with The Delta Blues? The Delta Blues: For our new fans, you can expect to have a good time. When people go out to a bar or club, they want to hear songs they know. We can read the crowd quick, and with our extensive set list, we can mold it to any style. It doesn’t matter if you like country, rock, rap, blues, or catchy TV show theme songs - we will deliver an experience that makes you want to come back and see us. Through his accomplishments, Powell feels blessed to have shared the stage with The Sweet Inspirations, the background vocal group that performed with Elvis himself. He feels that he has a duty to pay the most authentic tribute to the “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” “It is an honor and a privilege to get up on stage and perform my hero’s music,” continued Powell. “It means the world to me to be recognized in that elite group, and this experience is something that I will never forget. Lulu & The Black Sheep: Sometimes Simpler Is Better By Johnny Griffith The world we live in is becoming more complex by the day it seems. With technology advancing at breakneck speed, the things that surround us are more capable of automating every aspect of our lives and are, by necessity in most cases, seldom simple. Yet, when it comes to music, even in a landscape dominated by electronic effects, some of the best music being made is a throwback to a much simpler style. These stripped down styles are remnants of what you might have heard 70 or 80 years ago. One of the more talented, and certainly more interesting, of the musical projects in this area is Lulu and The Black Sheep. The Black Sheep is fronted by local artist, Lauren Nichols, who takes the stage name Lulu VanTuckett, Lulu’s husband, Allen Wayne Nichols, and upright bassist Dave Stopani. Lulu was born in Longview, graduating from the Trinity School of Texas with a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree with a focus on communication design and illustration. After college, she undertook a tattoo apprenticeship and has been tattooing in East Texas for 8 years now. A veteran of previous musical projects, The Black Sheep was a return to music after a brief hiatus; the return has been a successful one with old and new fans alike flocking to Lulu’s unique and raw delivery of musical message. We recently tracked Lulu and The Black Sheep down on the road during a trip to Nashville and were able to get some more info on the talented songstress:
Johnny: You’ve got a lot of irons in the fire these days with work, music, touring, family... what’s a day in the life of Lulu like? Lulu: My days consist of tattooing, design work, playing shows, and spending time with my husband Allen and our one-eyed chiweenie Rooster Clem Eastwood The First. Johnny: When did you individually first get into music? Lulu: I’ve loved music since I was a kid. Growing up my family listened to the Beatles, but I remember as a young teen the first two CD’s I owned were Acid Bath and Beethoven. My taste in music is still pretty diverse. I’ve always loved to sing. When I was young, I’d run around the yard in a tutu and sing about the things I saw around me like I was in some kind of cartoon musical. When I got to college, I taught myself how to play basic guitar to accompany my singing. Not much has changed since then. Johnny: You’re not new to the music scene in this area, how were the “Black Sheep” born? Lulu: I wanted something a little more simple with “The Black Sheep” and right now it’s perfect. “The Black Sheep” can be singular or plural, so it can be just my husband Allen accompanying me, or David “Dog House” Stopani on upright bass, or anyone else for that matter. It’s really great for traveling when you can interchange pieces. Johnny: You’ve got a unique sound that could be described as one part bluegrass, one part outlaw country, one part folk music. In your own words, what are you trying to construct with your sound? Lulu: Our sound is an organic representation of the music that moves me. My inspiration comes from a wide variety of genres and I simply try to channel the feelings they invoke in me. A lot of the songs I perform are old honky-tonk songs from the 30’s and 40’s. I try to portray what it is that moves me in the song and tell the stories as if they were my own. Johnny: Are there any unique challenges that come along with playing with your significant other in the same band? Lulu: Oh yeah, not very often, but occasionally personal emotions find their way on stage with us or in practice. We’re very fortunate that we
make such a great team. It’s taken a lot of learning how to reflect and understand our own individual nature to keep from taking things so personally with one another. Johnny: Who are some of your influences musically? Lulu: I like 30’s-50’s blues, Ray Charles, Bo Diddley, Fats Domino. I just recently visited Memphis Minnie’s burial site in Walls, Mississippi on one of our tours. It was a very enriching experience. Jake LaBotz is a modern inspiration. I was moved by his music long before meeting him and then he gave me great advice on working with my imperfections and insecurities as a musician. He is a great guy and fantastic musician. Then I have my honky-tonk heroes. Hank III was my first introduction to country music that I actually liked, which opened me up to Hank Sr. and eventually Hank Jr., Waylon Jennings, and Merle Haggard. I also like the old train songs of Jimmie Rodgers, and I went through a Cab Calloway phase for a couple of years. Like I said earlier, I have pretty diverse tastes in music. Johnny: What has been your best musical memory to this point? Lulu: This past summer we went to Muddy Roots in Cookeville, Tennessee. We didn’t perform on stage but we camped with several Texas musicians we’d played shows with in the past. We got to meet other musicians and likeminded people from all over the United States as well as other continents. It was definitely a life
changing experience for me. Johnny: How was 2017 for LuLu and The Black Sheep? Lulu: 2017 was almost been a rebirth for Lulu and The Black Sheep. I took about a 6 month break from music in general to focus on some health issues. In dealing with these issues, my mindset has drastically changed and I’ve become more spiritual and enlightened to my place in this universe and what really matters in life. I think before it was as if there was a veil draped over my eyes and I was being held back by my insecurities. Now that it’s been lifted, I feel like I’m able to express myself better and I feel more comfortable getting out and sharing what I have to offer. Johnny: What’s in store for 2018? Lulu: There is going to be lots of touring for 2018! I’m working on a tour out West for the Spring, then East to Florida in March, and New Mexico in May. I’d be really pleased if we at least have something in the works for Europe, too. You can find LuLu and The Black Sheep at: • reverbnation.com/luluvantuckett

Cody: For as long as I can recall, I’ve been drawn to music. The way I express myself musically has just changed over the years. Growing up, I used music as an escape. I’d listen to it to dive into good emotions or run away from bad ones. That’s one reason I’ve always listened to all types of genres. It wasn’t until I was 16 that I picked up guitar and started writing songs. That’s when I realized that I didn’t have to just escape from emotions, I could actually pour them into my music. I started performing regularly this past August, and the more I perform, the more I realize that it is just another way of expressing myself. People seem to feed off of the emotions I portray on-stage, and in-turn I feed off of theirs. Johnny: What were some of your influences early on that shaped your musical direction? Cody: My earliest musical influences were actually bands like AC/ DC, Def Leppard, and Metallica. I obviously grew up listening to a lot of country as well, but I really fed off rock music. So, I naturally fell in-love when I got turned on to the Red Dirt music scene. I can still go back to the first time I heard Ragweed: I was riding back roads in Able Springs with my Aunt and her now husband. The fact that those guys were both country and By Johnny Griffith rock-n-roll just blew me away. I think that was The life of a musician, committed to the night I realized that I wanted to play music performing live, is a tricky one. Very few are for a living someday. Sitting here looking back fortunate enough to be able to just rely on music though I couldn’t pinpoint one, two, or even a to make ends meet. The rest are forced to juggle handful of direct influences. I just write, and I several chainsaws at once, (i.e. family, work, just play, and I just sing. All the greats of all of the music, family) in order to do what they love a genres that I’ve jammed to have helped influence few times a month. It’s a challenging path that the artist I am today. many have stumbled on while walking, yet for Johnny: How would you describe your Kaufman singer-songwriter Cody Daniel, the music now and how has it evolved over the choice was, and still is, simple: family first. years? Born and raised just outside Terrell, Texas, in Cody: Whoa. Uh...that’s a little tough. When the community of College Mound, the 24-year- I first started writing, I just wrote songs to write old Cody Daniel, graduated from Terrell High them. I mean, I was 16 or 17 and I had gone School where he played football, tuba in the through some adversity and experiences, but I marching band, and bass in the jazz band. He didn’t really know what life was all about, you started playing guitar around his sophomore know - and I still don’t! As the years progressed year and picked up singing right before his and I went through more and more, I started junior year. After a couple of years of playing really feeling my songs. I even started connecting talent shows and events around the community, with songs that I had written years before. I feel Cody started playing the bar scene right out of like I still write in a similar style now, but it feels high school and was leaning toward making a different for me. It makes me a little anxious run at a music career when he learned he was thinking of how the next eight years will evolve going to be a father. Recognizing the importance me. Exciting stuff! of his next choice, he put the gigs on hold and Johnny: Are you primarily a solo act or do devoted his time and efforts to raising his son you collaborate with other musicians regularly? and working. Cody: For the first few months I was strictly Now, after a 4-and-a-half year hiatus, Cody a solo act. Not necessarily intentionally, but I was is back on stage performing around East Texas so focused on getting comfortable being in-front all while juggling work and parenthood; but of people and building a good set list that I fully committed to making all three work for his didn’t really have time to even think about pracforeseeable future. We caught up with him in ticing with anyone. The last couple of months between gigs this month to get to know Cody I’ve been playing with my good buddy, Colton and see how he manages it all so well: Mathis. We mostly do song swaps and really Johnny: When were you first drawn to just get up there, jam, and have a good time. After performing in concert band, jazz band, music?
Cody Daniel:
A Simple Choise, Family First
and Texas Country bands when I was younger, I realized that it’s really hard to find musicians that you truly click with. Everyone that’s been to one of our shows always ask if we’ve been playing together for years. That means a lot to me. Hopefully in the future, we can find some other guys to form a band with that mesh as well, and we can all just get up there and have fun with us. Johnny: How much original music do you typically try to work into a set? Cody: Man, not nearly as much as I could. I’ve been writing for eight years now and have a lot of tunes saved up, but I’ve only been performing for five months. I’ve been using the shows I do now to do mostly dancing songs, fun covers, and sing-alongs. I’ll typically slide three to four originals in once I know I have the crowd’s attention. And, I’ve been slowly working on an EP. Hopefully, one day I can do a full show of originals and hear the audience singing along with them. Johnny: Do you typically play in the immediate vicinity or do you get the opportunity to travel? Cody: I’ve been mostly playing in my county and the adjacent counties, but I have gotten out a little further and am openly seeking gigs elsewhere. I’m at the point right now where I will play anywhere. I’ve done restaurants, bars, private parties, festivals, you name it. I haven’t turned down a venue yet, and I don’t plan on it. I just want to be heard, man. I recently had my first travel night for a gig. It wasn’t a necessity, but I felt it was far enough to take advantage of and get away for a whole night. Having a 4-year old it’s hard to commit to traveling, but I think he and I would both love some gigs that involve getting away and going on some adventures. He’s still young, but he’s made it very clear that he’s my right-hand man and that I have his full support. Johnny: What are some of the challenges of balancing the passion for music with the responsibilities of being an “adult?” Cody: I have to say, it’s not too hard balancing adulthood and a passion for music. Not for me, at least. Yeah, I work 55+ hours a week at my day job and typically play once or twice a weekend, sometimes more. Honestly, as tiring as it gets those shows on the weekend are my wind-down time. The real struggle comes with parenthood. I’ve loved playing and performing in front of people since I started, but once I had my son, I put the performing side down. I went almost four and a half years without playing a gig. I missed it all the time, but it was what I felt was necessary. I focused on being a father and adult until I felt like I, and my son, were at a point where we could add the music into the mix. Now that raising him and working a full-time job is second-nature, I can afford to go out and perform because I love to. Not because I have to. I make it a point to make sure he never feels, or is, neglected. If he ever gets to that point then I won’t hesitate to make a change to the adult or musician in me. I absolutely love music, but I’m a father first and foremost. Johnny: What have been some of your best memories on stage? Off stage? Cody: Okay, so like I said, Colton and I have a blast on-stage together. The first show we did
together was at Boondocks on Cedar Creek Lake. The turnout was great. We had been up there playing for a bit and between songs Colton was doing fillers. Well, I jumped in and played the riff to “Play that Funky Music,” which Colton quickly picked up on and joined. Anyway, so we do the first verse and chorus. When we circle around to repeat the chorus, Colton leaned over and told me to stop playing. The ENTIRE bar belted out every single word to the chorus and then finished the song with us. It was greatness for me. I had never had that much reaction from a crowd. I’m still pretty new to gigging and shows, so I get excited over these things. I probably always will. Johnny: What have you been most proud of in your musical career to this point? Cody: I’d have to say I’m most proud of the fact that I haven’t tried to force my music career and also that I was practical enough at 19 to realize that I was going to have to put it down for awhile. Now, I just do it because I love it. I just get up and pour my heart out every weekend. I get called out all the time on the funny faces I make when I sing, and that’s okay with me. It’s hard as a musician these days. There’s a lot of competition out there and there’s a lot of people who just naturally have what it takes. Even playing the small local scene like I do, it’s hard not to try to compare yourself to the big dogs in music and naturally follow in their footsteps. I have to say, man, I’m blessed to have the full-time job I have. I give props to those guys out there that are grinding their teeth and banging strings night in and night out to pay the bills. Those guys are a different kind of ‘strong’ and I’m lucky to say I share the scene with them. Johnny: What do you have in store for 2018? Cody: I have a big show in January where I will be competing in the Texas Spotlight Championship on January 13th. After that, I plan on getting at least a three to five song EP out by the end of spring. I’m definitely going to be writing some new songs. I’d like to pick up a new instrument. Who knows what else. I live my life a quarter note at a time. All jokes aside, I’m excited about this coming year. Whatever it holds, I will make the best of it and just enjoy the ride. Like I said, I just play because I love to...whatever else comes from it is just a bonus. For news and upcoming gigs, check out Cody Daniel on the web: • facebook.com/runningonempty17

January 11th-14th (Nightly at 7:30pm, Sunday at 2:30pm) - “I Never Saw Another Butterfly” - More than 15,000 Jewish children passed through Terezin and only about a hundred were still alive when Terezin was liberated at the end of the war. One of the survivors, Raja, having lived through it all, teaching the children when there was nothing to teach with, helping to give them hope when there was little enough reason for hope, creating a little world of laughter, of flowers, and of butterflies behind the barbed wire, tells the true story of the children. It’s her play, and it’s theirs. There were no butterflies at Terezin, of course, but for the children, butterflies became a symbol of defiance, making it possible for them to live on and play happily while waiting to be transported. Tyler Civic Theatre is located at 400 Rose Park Dr., Tyler, next to the Tyler Rose Garden Center. For more info call (903)592-0561 or go to tylercivictheatre.com. Over the course of six months, filled with laughter, hilarious misadventures, and the occasional liquid refreshment, these middle-aged women successfully bond and find the confidence to jump start their new lives. Together, they discover lasting friendships and a renewed determination to live in the moment and most importantly, realize it’s never too late to make new old friends. February 2nd-4th, 8th-11th (Nightly at 7:30pm, Sundays at 2:30pm; Saturday, February 10th is a Dessert Theatre presentation) - “I'm Not Rappaport” - The author of “A Thousand Clowns” brings another set of the particular creatures that are New Yorkers. “I’m Not Rappaport” takes place under a bridge in Central Park, where two octogenarians – one white, one black – meet regularly, determined to fight off all attempts to put them out to pasture. Nat is a cantankerous Communist whose daughter is urging him into the old folks’ home. Midge, an apartment superintendent, spends his days in the park hiding in the past and hiding from his disgruntled tenants. The February 10th performance has a dessert option. The boys grow up streets apart, never learning the truth but becoming firm friends and falling in love with the same girl. Henderson Civic Theater is located at 122 E. Main, Henderson. March 3rd (7:30pm) - “Cameron Carpenter” will be presented at The Belcher Performance Center. Bach to film scores, his original works and hundreds of transcriptions and arrangements – is probably the most diverse of any organist. He regularly appears as a soloist with many of the world’s great orchestras and signed in 2013 an exclusive multi-album recording contract with Sony Classical. Cameron launched his International Touring Organ – a monumental digital organ of his own design, playable throughout the world – with two Lincoln Center concerts on March 9th, the release of the Sony album “If You Could Read My Mind” on March 3rd, and a 31-concert tour to Europe, the USA, and the UK. As she believes she is going to win the big lottery, she withdraws her life savings to buy tickets. Meanwhile her husband, who left her three years before, arrives back home on her birthday, the day of the lottery drawing. The woman’s sister has also bought a lot of tickets. The husband has bought one for her and one for him. The women think the husband has won with his tickets, but it turns out, the reason he is flush is that he is now financially successful. Actually, one of the women just may have the winning ticket. Tyler Civic Theatre is located at 400 Rose Park Dr., Tyler, next to the Tyler Rose Garden Center. Art
Inside the Artist’s Studio:
The Healing Hands of Art By Derrick White “Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life.” - Pablo Picasso. This quote from famed artist, Pablo Picasso, alludes to the intrinsic value of art. Tyler Junior College (TJC) is embracing in the idea, with a new rotating art exhibit,“The Beauty of Art and Medicine.” With the belief that art has a direct connection to health, TJC invites guests to enjoy the talents of local East Texas artists, displayed on the Vernon & Amy Faulconer floor of the Robert M. Rogers Nursing & Health Sciences Building on the TJC main campus. From recent studies, art used as medicine can increase positive emotions, reduce anxiety and stress, and improve positive identity and medical outcomes. “Art is unquestionably one of the purest and highest elements in human happiness. It trains the mind through the eye, and the eye through the mind. As the sun colors flowers, so does art color life.” – John Lubbock. Artworks featured in the exhibition show a variety of approaches and help introduce some local artists to the spotlight. The exhibition is in collaboration with the Tyler Museum of Art, and has been thoughtfully installed by Derek Frazier. Selections in this inaugural exhibit include David Ackerson’s colorful blast acrylic painting “Post Tenebrus Lux,” Heather Crane’s collage titled “Old School,” and a mother-daughter collaborative named “Wisdom + Dreams,” by Cathy Krafve and Anna Krafve Pierce. The diptych (two panels) acrylic painting depicts the organic, half shapes of a flower and a butterfly resounding the connection between the subjects through the use of positive and negative space. Other works include Gaylon Dingler’s spontaneous, visually tactile, paper-mâché and acrylic, relief sculptures “Moon Water” and “Red Hot.” The remaining artists showcased are: Dana W. Adams, Mike Bayham, Don Bristow, Doug Carter, Terry Fowler, Philipp Fürhofer, Kyle Ischy, Brian Stone, Ellie Taylor, Elaine Vorster, David Wallace, and Derrick White. Pieces in the exhibition are available for purchase through collaboration with Valerosa Designs and Gallery. Come take a stroll through this beautiful building and enrich your eyes and soul through your experience with the art while it is on display. “The arts empower. The arts help transform communities and, as I often say, the result can be a better child, a better town, a better nation and certainly a better world. Let’s champion
our arts action heroes, emulate them and make our communities everything we want them to be,” states Robert L. Lynch, President, Americans for the Arts. I believe there are also health benefits to collecting and living with handcrafted, unique art and not with mass produced, machine milled decorations from corporate, big box craft stores. When surrounding oneself with original art, it ultimately improves the quality of life. Owning original art can make you happy and give you positive feelings, as well as satisfaction in having something matchless and singular of which no other duplicate exist anywhere else in the entire world. Art can enhance the space in which it is displayed and make for a more aesthetic environment. The art you collect and display can be a healthy expression of your own individuality. Art reduces stress by increasing relaxation, gratification, and tranquility. I get fulfillment from visiting friends and collectors and seeing my art hanging on their walls and knowing my creations found a good home. Collectors often point out elements in the composition they have discovered, from years of living with the artwork, which I never intended. Art offers opportunities for social interaction reducing isolation and makes community spaces more aesthetic and interactive. Art is a great conversation piece. Buying local art helps the members of your own community. I know that the art we have in our home is some of the most important objects we have for poignant, sentimental, and artistic reasons. My family and I are surrounded daily by art which feeds creativity, invokes fond memories, and constantly surprises us and there is no other home in the world with the same or even a similar interior look. A few selections of our growing art collection include a Randy Brodnax ceramic pot created in his signature style and beautifully formed and glazed. Brodnax was the community college art professor who changed my life. I found inspiration in his art appreciation class and decided to pursue a career in art. He was the first adult I met who loved what he did for a living and my goal became to mimic his way of life. We have several ceramic vases, mugs, and platters
from Jake Allee, a friend, former colleague, and amazingly prolific creator. A colorful and exquisite painting by Barbara Holland complements our living room. I first met Barbara in 1992 when she and I both received awards at an exhibition. She placed second and I got third. Years later, while applying for a teaching position at TJC, I learned they hired Barbara Holland instead of me. Good choice but I thought “who is this short, British woman who keeps beating me at everything?” Things worked out and I landed the job a year later and fortunately had the pleasure of working with Barbara for eight years before she retired. Other artists in our collection are Mason Buchanan, Sean Cagle, Brianna Clark, Amber Draschil, Justin Edwards, Christie Funk, Dave Funk, Charles and John Hancock, Daniel Hays, Paul Jones, Cacy Legnion, Philana
