To Do
The 7th annual Junebug Summer Fair Expands
Mark your calendars for June 21st, 22nd and 23rd when the 7th annual Junebug Summer Fair kicks into high gear. The familyfriendly festival, which is located in the tiny art enclave of Ben Wheeler, Texas, highlights the work of artists, musicians, and artisans from the Lone Star state. The festival will be held Friday, June 21st (7-10pm for VIP ticket holders), Saturday June 22nd (10am-12 midnight), and Sunday, June 23rd (10am-3pm). Headquartered on the three-acre park-like property surrounding the Forge (a local restaurant, bar, and music venue), the festival will give attendees an opportunity to witness the creative process through “live art” displays as well as the chance to actively join in the process. Here are just a few of the fun events planned for the day: Long Table Dinner
Kicking off the Junebug Summer Fair Friday night, June 21st from 7-10pm, The Forge will be hosting an intimate Long Table Dinner in the Grist Mill, serving local ingredients paired with local wines. The menu will show where each ingredient came from. You will also get a VIP preview of the art show and live music. Farmers Market
The Forge will be hosting a Farmers Market both days of the festival to promote local farms and cottage businesses. There will also be a space reserved for vendors who sell goods and services based on health and wellness including Thai Yoga massage, handmade lotions and soaps, and other wellness-based businesses. This will be held Saturday June 22nd (10am-4pm), and Sunday, June 23rd (10am-3pm). Live Music
Live acoustic music will run both days

throughout the grounds, with a larger concert set for Saturday evening with Porters Bluff headlining. Bands on the Grist Mill stage start at 7pm Friday and Saturday. Live Hands-on Art Demos
Live art stations will be set up where artists will show how they perform their particular craft. Last year, there was a live community loom where adults and children alike had the opportunity to add to the large woven piece. There was also a pottery wheel with artisans helping to teach how to throw pottery and make simple pieces. The festival will also have weaving stations along with artist demonstrations. Health And Wellness
There will be an area for health and wellness with Thai Yoga massage, organic soaps, handmade clothes, and other wonderful products and services with wellness in mind. You may simply want to wander around the beautifully manicured herb gardens and grounds of the Forge, or grab a cone of homemade ice cream or an adult beverage from the Forge’s bar and settle into one of the many park benches and tables to listen to local musicians as they play their original songs. Johnny Rodriguez Comes To Tyler
Liberty Hall is hosting a variety of upcoming events. Liberty Hall is located at 103 E. Erwin St., Tyler. Tickets are available online at libertytyler.com. June 6th (7pm): Johnny Rodriguez - This favored son of Texas has received standing ovations by audiences ranging from the Ryman Auditorium to Carnegie Hall. His debut album, “Introducing Johnny Rodriguez,” went to #1 on all three major trade charts, and by 1973 he was nominated by the Country Music Association for “Male Vocalist of the Year” and won the Billboard Trend Setter Award as the first Mexican-American to capture a national audience. Just a few of Johnny’s classic hits during this period included “Pass Me By,” “You Always Come Back (To Hurting Me),” “Riding My Thumb To Mexico,” “That’s The Way Love Goes,” and “Just Get Up And Close The Door.” He was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007. This is a public rental. Liberty Hall is not in charge of ticketing. For ticket assistance please call (866)710-8942. Tickets are $40-$50. June 15th (7pm): Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Bluegrass Band - Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Bluegrass Band will visit Liberty’s stage once again! They are a modern bluegrass band that plays and sings the songs of The Beatles. Just as the Beatles broke the mold of all things rock and roll, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Bluegrass Band follows closely with that same spirit of innovation, interpreting songs already loved by millions. Performing some of the very best music composed by Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and George Harrison, beloved songs are presented with instruments you normally wouldn’t expect to hear and played in a way they are not normally played. The result is a pleasing sound with a lot of fun surprises. Tickets are $20. June 20th (7pm): Reel Talk: “Citizen Kane” When a reporter is assigned to decipher newspaper magnate Charles Foster Kane’s (Orson Welles) dying words, his investigation gradually reveals the fascinating portrait of a complex man who rose from obscurity to staggering heights. Though Kane’s friend and colleague Jedediah Leland (Joseph Cotten), and his mistress Susan Alexander (Dorothy Comingore), who shed fragments of light on Kane’s life, the reporter fears he may never penetrate the mystery of the elusive man’s final word, “Rosebud.” Be a part of Reel Talk, a program created by the Tyler Public Library and Liberty Hall, where attendees can watch timeless classics and discover new favorites, then stay afterward to connect with like-minded people to discuss the film. Bring your library card and get in free. June 21st (8pm): Big D & Bubba’s Game Night - Game Night is a mix between a game show, a live talk show, and an improv comedy performance. It was conceived as a way for the show to visit cities around the country where the show is heard and do more than just shake hands and pose for selfies. “Basically, it’s just us doing everything we can to entertain the audience,” says Big D. “We want to make sure everyone has a ton of fun.” The Big D and Bubba show is heard on over 75 country radio stations around the country and they are the official country morning show for AFN, heard in 177 countries on every military base and every ship at sea. The show is heard locally on KNUE 101.5, its longest continuous affiliate. They’ve been on KNUE for almost 19 years. Bubba adds, “We are really looking forward to the show! Carsen and Patrick and all of our friends from KNUE will be there too.” Tickets are $17-$25. This event is nearly sold out. June 22nd (8pm): Card 53 Comedy - Card 53 Comedy is back at Liberty Hall for a night filled with friends and laughter. You won’t want to miss out on this one-of-kind, improv comedy show where each night is a unique experience thanks to the creativity of the comedians and the participation of the audience. Perfect for date night or a friends’ night out, Card 53 strives for each show to be what they consider “clean-ish;” however, due to the unpredictable nature of improv, they risk embarrassing their wives, girlfriends, dogs, employers, and total strangers with their unique style of improv “makemups.” Tickets are $15. 9th Annual Piney Woods Wine Festival: Uncork the Fun at Picker’s Pavilion with 20 Local Wineries
The Cannery welcomes Visit Lindale’s 9th Annual Piney Woods Wine Festival to Picker’s Pavilion, Friday-Saturday, June 21st-22nd. The annual event features wine tastings by the 20 wineries on the Piney Woods Wine Trail. The two-day event will feature national award-winning wines, live music, and a variety of food. Saturday will feature arts and crafts vendors for the wine enthusiasts. Like a fine wine, the Cannery just keeps getting better with age. Located in downtown Lindale at Blackberry Square, Picker’s Pavilion has transformed from its former use as a cannery storage facility to a destination for big-name concerts, community festivals, and event space rentals. The event is free to the public. A wristband ($10) is required per day to enter the wine garden (tastings are not included in the $10 entry fee). Each wristband comes with a wine glass and a six-bottle wine tote. Tastings will cost $1; a glass of wine will range from $5 to $8 per glass; and bottles of wine may be purchased from the individual wineries. This will be held at The Cannery, Picker’s Pavilion, 205 East North St., Lindale. Packed with Texas charm, The Cannery’s one-of-a-kind space turns up the modern amenities while grooving to a vintage beat. Its location inside a former cannery celebrates Downtown Lindale’s industrial past - and they are proud to be a part of the city’s continued growth. Come see why many call it the premier destination for entertainment, shopping, and dining in East Texas. For more information about the Cannery, venues, retail, and restaurants, please visit their website at thecannerylindale.com. Beach & Sea Side Reads By Gini Rainey “Between Wind & Water: 1898 Galveston” by Rosa Morgan
12• EGuideMagazine.com
With her novel set in late 19th century Galveston, Ms. Morgan successfully brings together Abigail Bauer and Captain Sebastian Lyons, and weaves an engaging romantic tale that ranges from Galveston’s elite all the way down to Tin Can Alley and the docks filled with the lowest of the lows in the city. Both her main characters are unhappily married. Sheer luck brought Abigail and her perverted husband Otto from their sod house on the Texas prairie to live in a lovely Galveston home in a decent neighborhood. Across the same street, Sebastian, having given up his life at sea, nursed his dying wife. Written by one of Galveston’s own, this book is filled with the flavor of turn of the century Galveston and recalls names and places that are an integral part of the past of this historical town. I was hard-pressed to put down this intriguing story and found myself wrapped up in the lives and adventures of the characters. With a skill for character development, Ms. Morgan has created a book that is well worth the read. However, the only flaw was her use of script for the letters exchanged between Abigail and Sebastian. I understand her reasoning, but should this book go to reprint, I would suggest selecting a more readable font. It really slowed down my pageturning and I struggled to read the text. This is a great experience for all ages. Tickets are $5 for each show. Star Party Saturday

This book came to me from the publisher for review, and while not necessarily a book I would personally choose to read, I know there would be a huge following for this type of literature. If you are interested in witches, goblins, ghosts, demons, and the walking dead, you will totally love this book. Sam Hooker has quite a way with words and puts a whole new twist on the meaning of life after death. A lot of the time his tongue-in-cheek humor kept me reading, but I had a difficult time with the whole premise. His characters are interestingly engaging and, prior to their meeting up in the afterlife, interacted with one another before the fall of the fictional Salzstadt. This book is a must-read for people who enjoy fantasy to the extreme and would like to enjoy some very clever turns of phrases. Rating: 4 of 5, Copyright 2019 – Black Spot Publishing

32nd Tyler Cattle Barons’ Gala To Feature Mark Chesnutt
Profetic Calaveras:
Bringing Life Through Music By Johnny Griffith
The name is fittingly memorable as the music they create and isn’t what you’ll find on most stages in the area on any given weekend. The Durango, Colorado trio known as Profetic Calaveras (PC) originated right here in Tyler and has been using their music to spread positivity ever since. An intriguing blend of several different influences, PC combines cultures and musical philosophies for a set full of grooves which will leave you smiling and wanting more. As they are headed back to East Texas for a show at Clicks Live on June 1st, we recently caught up to Profetic Calaveras to find out more about them. Johnny: What is the current lineup of Profetic Calaveras? Profetic Calaveras: Alex Ruiz on guitar and vocals, Carolina Ruiz on bass, and Gab Kaplan on drums. Johnny: Who do you individually feel was most responsible for starting you down a musical path, and why? Alex: My cousin, Emmanuel, was the person who got me to listen to a lot of bands that became really influential for me later in life. He was the first person to get me started on guitar. A lot of my family is musical; I feel like it has always been flowing in my blood. Cali: In 2015, my brother-in-law had a dream and woke up saying that I was meant to be a bass player. After that he taught me some technique. With my sister as the drummer, me as the bass player, and him (Kendrick) as the guitarist, we started playing. I wrote my first, very basic, riff within a week or so; it took some direction and guidance but that became one of our first songs as a band. Gab: My parents took me to see The Who (what was left of them anyway) before the age of 7. They always took me to shows and supported me playing music in school and with bands. From high school marching band to college ensembles to Drum Corps International, they were always there cheering me on. As for actually starting, my babysitter Michelle was the one who got me my first guitar. Johnny: Who were some of your biggest early musical influences? Alex: Jimi Hendrix, Under Oath, Mexican pop music, Christian radio. I was all over the place. Cali: Some Brazilian music my parents loved like Antonio Carlos Jobim, Gilberto Gil, Gabriel Pensador, Seu Jorge, and Ana Carolina. And my main bass influence, Victor Wooten. Gab: The Who, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Rush. Johnny: When did the idea of PC begin to form? Profetic Calaveras: After touring with Alex’s previous project called Star Steed, it felt like the music was starting to move in a different direction. All the members at that point begun to go their separate ways and Cali and Alex decided to create a project all their own. Johnny: So what about that name? How did that originate and what’s the significance?
Profetic Calaveras: We brainstormed for a while. At one point Alex looked at the “Calavera” tattoo on his arm and said the name offhandedly. After that we decided that spiritually that meant a lot more to us. It reminded us of the scripture Ezekiel 37, where Ezekiel is taken to a field of dried bones in a vision and is asked to bring them to life with his words. He does this and raises an army. The band’s name to us basically means that we can bring life and color to people through our music, and its meaning celebrates the beauty of life. The Calaveras aspect is a nod to Alex’s Mexican heritage and the imagery that comes up with the Day of the Dead celebration. Johnny: When and where was the first Profetic Calaveras show? Profetic Calaveras: Technically, our first show was in NYC at a place called “The Shrine;” however, right before coming on stage one of Cali’s tuning pegs completely broke off. Needless to say the show didn’t go as planned and is probably one of the worst shows we ever played. So, our first official full band show was at ETX Brewing Company in Downtown Tyler. The line-up was Alex, Cali, Daniel Armstrong on melodica, and Eddie Farina on cajón. Johnny: About how many shows a month does PC play these days? Profetic Calaveras: We usually play 2-3 shows a month. We have been in a little bit of hiatus since moving to Durango and we are still trying to do some more recording to release our first album this fall, titled “The Road Ahead.” Johnny: There is a very cool vibe to your music, a sort of laid back complexity. How would you describe your sound and how did that sound evolve as you started practicing and putting pieces together? Profetic Calaveras: The sound is truly unique with us having difficulty to really pinpoint a specific “genre.” Sometimes we just tell people it’s like ‘Vulfpeck met Santana’ but there’s also so much more we like to sprinkle in. We like to think the band’s music is a mirror image of us as individuals, and that our differences and similarities form a
cohesive unit. Lately, since Gab has joined the band, we’ve been really digging into a more progressive rock sound. Johnny: What would you say the ratio of cover tunes to originals is? Profetic Calaveras: Honestly, it’s about 80% original tunes to 20% covers. When we do covers, we really like to just make them our own, messing with different genres and time signatures. Johnny: You originated in East Texas but are now based out of Durango, Colorado. What prompted the move and how has the reception been to the band up there? Profetic Calaveras: Well, it started when we introduced a new member to the band, Zion Spencer. We booked a gig at the Venice Beach Bar in LA in September 2017, and were able to put together a West Coast tour that lasted about 3 months. Zion suggested we spend the winter in Durango, since he had lived here for 3 years and had family out here. When we finally got to Durango we fell in love with its chill mountain town vibe. It has been a privilege to grow roots here and call this place home. The reception to our music has been great; there is a thriving music scene there and they have welcomed us with open arms. Johnny: Profetic Calaveras is playing a show at Clicks Live on June 1st. What brings PC back to East Texas for the show? Profetic Calaveras: It’s actually a few reasons. We’ve wanted to show our newest member, Gab, our old stomping grounds, and the opportunity presented itself when we were asked to play our friend’s wedding in Denton. From there we decided to do a little mini-tour and go do the fun stuff in Texas — we’re calling it a “play-cation.” Johnny: What is on the radar for the rest of 2019 and beyond? Profetic Calaveras: We are planning some more dates around Colorado during the summer, and we’ll be releasing our first album “The Road Ahead” in the fall. 2019 is looking great! The 32nd Tyler Cattle Barons’ Gala will feature Mark Chesnutt, with Satellite Band opening, on June 29th. This event will be held 7pm-1am at Texas Rose Horse Park, 14078 Hwy. 110, Tyler. Tickets are on sale at tylercattlebaronsgala.org or by calling (903)597-1383. Come out and enjoy an evening of wonderful food, mainstream entertainment, gaming tables, live and silent auctions, and so much more. All who attend will enjoy their evening! Cattle Barons says, “Cancer does not discriminate, and never will. Someday, we hope that cancer will be eradicated and, together with your support, we can all do our part. We also celebrate survivors, who possibly wouldn’t be here today were it not for the actions of the American Cancer Society. While cancer is still ever present today, positive steps forward have been made and more will come, and for that, we thank you.” “As we embark on this journey, we are anxious to meet new supporters who will help us and the ACS combat cancer. On behalf of the 2019 Cattle Barons’ Committee, we hope you will join us on June 29th, 2019 at Brunson Equestrian Center and experience the wonderful facilities of Texas Rose Horse Park for the Gala we have planned for you.” The first Tyler Cattle Barons’ Gala was held in 1988. While much was known about this disease, much more was not. To date, over $15 million has been raised locally to support both local and national cancer support services, including cancer research. Without the help and local support of past contributors, this would not have been accomplished. Your support is appreciated now and in the future. June 14th, 8:30am-2:30pm
Clays for the Cause
Clays for the Cause will be held at 6S Ranch, 8159 CR 313W, Lindale, benefiting the American Cancer Society. Four person teams can enter for 100 clays per shooter. Breakfast, lunch and refreshments will be provided. To sign up your team, go to tylercattlebaronsgala.org.

“Texas Birds: Works by Frank X. Tolbert”
The Tyler Museum of Art (TMA) is located at 1300 S. Mahon Ave. on the Tyler Junior College main campus. Regular TMA hours are 10am-5pm Tuesday-Saturday, and 1-5pm Sunday. The Museum is closed Mondays. For more info call the museum at (903)595-1001, tylermuseum.org, or email info@tylermuseum.org. The Tyler Museum of Art ushers in the summer season with a visual celebration of the avian species that fly the skies over the Lone Star State in the new exhibition “Texas Birds: Works by Frank X. Tolbert 2.” The show continues through August 4th in the TMA’s Bell Gallery. Admission is free. Organized by the TMA and curated by Caleb Bell, “Texas Birds” spotlights works from Tolbert’s ongoing Texas Bird Project – including a recently finished piece that never has been seen by the public. Started in 2014, this body of work includes drawings, paintings, and prints that highlight a wide variety of the bird species that inhabit the state. The series largely was inspired by early childhood experiences with the Lone Star State’s vast array of flora and fauna on trips the artist took with his father, Frank X. Tolbert Sr., as the elder Tolbert was writing his column “Tolbert’s Texas” for the “Dallas Morning News.” Work on the Texas Bird Project began when the artist was commissioned by Austin’s Flatbed Press & Gallery to create eight bird etchings. After the initial exhibition at Flatbed, Tolbert said he decided to continue the project indefinitely. “Texas Birds” marks the first time works from the Texas Bird Project have been organized into a major museum exhibition. Tolbert’s work has been widely exhibited and is featured in numerous public collections, including the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, Dallas Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He and his wife, artist Ann Stautberg, live

The Tyler Museum of Art explores the mystique of the South as seen through the eyes of a Texas talent with its next major exhibition, “Floating Life: Mississippi River Drawings by Liz Ward.” The show continues through August 25th in the TMA’s North Gallery. Organized by the TMA and curated by Caleb Bell, “Floating Life” is the first large-scale museum exhibition of Mississippi River works by Ward, a San Antonio artist and professor of art and art history at Trinity University, whose work largely is informed by natural history and the environmental crisis. The exhibition spotlights pieces from two recent bodies of work: “Ghosts of the Old Mississippi” and “Veritas Caput.” The works from “Ghosts of the Old Mississippi” are based on geological maps of the river’s ancient courses and inspired by the artist’s childhood memories from South Louisiana, where her great-grandfather spent a career as a riverboat captain. Pieces from “Veritas Caput” focus on the search for the source of the river by various explorers. Ward’s work has been exhibited and is featured in numerous public collections, including the Tyler Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Support for “Floating Life” is provided by Collectors’ Circle-Gold Sponsors Betty and Dick Summers. Summer Lecture Series Programs

I’m sure you and yours need free, fun activities which will be stimulating to the senses and inside air conditioned buildings, so check out these venues around town showcasing wonderful visual art. Gallery Main Street, located in Downtown Tyler at 110 W. Erwin St., kicked off the summer by displaying the Caldwell Arts Academy Exhibit. The exhibition (which closed May 21st) featured 46 artworks by 42 different artists from Caldwell Arts Academy ranging from first through sixth grade. This was a great opportunity for these young artists to have their creations exhibited at a professional level in a real contemporary art space. The pieces were strong and showcased these youthful bright Caldwell Stars. Gallery Main Street has been celebrating serving our community for the last 10 years with the “110@110” Art Exhibition and Fundraising Art Sale. 110 (10” x 10”) art pieces created by a select group of local artists will be available for affordable purchase at the grand opening reception on June 8th at 6pm. Crockett committed to forming this piece the hard way, and all the nuances of surface really paid off. And then there’s Katie Dukes’ equestrian-esque fetus beast distorted by the clear liquid inside its specimen jar (oven clay, aluminum, glass, and water). This work is beautifully crafted and hauntingly indistinct. It stands in both worlds, of being either some believable fantasy or a freakish reality. Regardless, it is a job well done. The exhibition also showcases quality pieces from Lidia Alvidrez, Rachel Lynn Anthony, Megan Brewer, Brady Collings, Coy Lothrop, Mike Ohara, Mary Ann Post, Jamin Shepherd, and Jacque Yost. I wish I had room to discuss them all, but I don’t so you will have to go see the art yourselves. Summer is a great time to do it and as usual, art is a part of East Texas. Be sure to see as much as you can while you are out seeking the cool air conditioning.
