If you mention the word “Bourbon” in certain circles, you’re sure to instigate several conversations, some which might even get heated. America’s native spirit has no shortage of myths and opinions surrounding it, nor does it have a shortage of people who enjoy it. Bourbon is currently enjoying a renaissance and, as such, there is more of the brown liquid, and distilleries producing it, than ever before. With so many options to choose from, and the process not lending itself to fly-by-night success, the possibility of spending your hard earned money on a subpar bottle of bourbon is very real. Combine this with the fact that more and more people are trying it and loving it and you have the perfect excuse to start the East Texas Bourbon Society. Not that one needs much of an excuse to hang out with other people who all have an appreciation for the taste, history, and experience of bourbon, but the ETBS is more than just a justification for a little imbibing on a Tuesday night. Born out of a desire to create a more educated consumer and to peel back the layers of the famous drink from Kentucky (maybe), local businessmen and bourbon enthusiasts Andrew Griffith and Cole Tomberlain saw an opportunity to share their passion with others and grow their own knowledge in the process. I recently sat down with Andrew and a couple of glasses to get more info on the East Texas Bourbon Society. Johnny: So how did the idea of the East Texas Bourbon Society form? Were you guys just sitting around enjoying a glass of the good stuff one day and decided it would be a great idea or what? Andrew: Well, it all but came up like that. Cole and I are a dangerous pair when we get to thinking big – as our wives will attest to. The idea came from Bourbon is the fuel Cole while we of the artist and the were working on working man alike. this year’s Bourbon Bourbon is Hemingway & Bow Ties event, bare-knuckle boxing a very successful with a cigar in his fundraiser for the World of mouth and then sitting Wonders Childown to write a prose dren’s Museum about that magic in downtown moment when the sun Longview. Cole first peaks over the started it just a horizon. Bourbon is few years ago and it has grown to sophisticated, but also raise hundreds the friend you want at of thousands of your back in a bardollars since then. fight. It sits on the shelf We thought, this of the one-percenters event is so much that manage hedge fun and raises so much money for a funds and the onegreat organization percenters that manage – wouldn’t it be motorcycle clubs. great if we could celebrate bourbon like this on a more regular occasion, use it as a fundraising platform on its own, and in the process extend the success of Bourbon & Bow Ties in February? Of course, our wives saw straight the ruse and said we just wanted an excuse to go sit around and drink bourbon on a weeknight and call it a good deed! However, Cole and I really did want to have a place to really nerd out about bourbon. We are at the peak of a five year “bourbon boom” and still a lot of people don’t really know what makes a whiskey a bourbon or about the rich history of the distilled spirit as an American creation with a protected designation of origin. We wanted people to have the knowledge and confidence to try new stuff and know how to pick something they like by knowing how to read a label or look at the mash-bill and age statement.
The idea developed pretty quickly and just as fast as we got excited about presenting some good drinks and finding some fine folks to talk with us about bourbon - we got nervous that maybe all people really wanted was a drinking club. Luckily, bourbon does a lot of heavy lifting. It inspires people pretty easily and it’s a fascinating topic. Now, we enjoy monthly meetings in two different cities where we get to taste fine whiskies and have great group discussions about their stories. Johnny: What about bourbon is so fascinating that it draws enough of a crowd to have a group like this? Andrew: I think a lot of it has to do with the history. Bourbon is an American original. Part of the New World. America is a melting pot and our culture is this beautiful tapestry of what everyone brought with them. Other countries have longstanding, proud traditions of craftsmanship and dedication to a skill passed from generation to generation – most with their own designation of origin. The artisans in the Parma Region of Italy have been proudly making Parmigiano-Reggiano since the 13th century largely in the exact same way. We see this with artisans and their countries throughout the world of food and wine. Bourbon is ours. It can only be made here, by us, and the rules and laws we developed so many years ago. I feel like that sense of pride really lifts bourbon up in the hearts of Americans. That being said… even without the history lessons, Bourbon has held its own from the start. The economics of bourbon through its early days, prohibition, and all the way through to its current boom are very interesting. But if history isn’t your thing, bourbon still has a certain appeal to it. Bourbon is the fuel of the artist and the working man alike. Bourbon is Hemingway bare-knuckle boxing with a cigar in his mouth and then sitting down to write a prose about that magic moment when the sun first peaks over the horizon. Bourbon is sophisticated, but also the friend you want at your back in a bar-fight. It sits on the shelf of the one-percenters that manage hedge funds and the one-percenters that manage motorcycle clubs. It doesn’t distinguish between race, sex, or wealth – it just wants to be shared. And as thanks, we share it. Johnny: What is your goal with the Society and what do you feel some of the benefits of membership are? Andrew: Our short-term goal is to have a good visit every month and share a little brown water. We hope to give folks enough information about bourbon to have the confidence to know what they like and how to find it. Long-term, as we are a charitable non-profit organization, the goal is to take that shared interest and grow it into something that also benefits the community through fundraising and benefits. Giving back to your community is very rewarding – being able to drink bourbon AND give back to your community is just the best of two worlds! The benefits of being in the society are plentiful. Aside from the reward of giving back to the community, there are the more obvious
rewards of friendship and drinking bourbon, of course! If philanthropy, fellowship, and firewater aren’t reason enough – get selfish and save yourself some big bucks! Again, to go back to the comparison of the craft beer bubble we have seen, this is an incredible way to try many fine bourbons without breaking the bank. There is a high value and benefit associated to the opportunity to try out premium bourbons at this price point, accompanied by a full report on the history and unique qualities, plus tasting notes. Johnny: How has the response been so far to the ETBS and has it met your expectations so far? Andrew: We have been very happy with what we have seen in the group. Our numbers in Longview are growing right along with our more ambitious goals and we are developing the Tyler market as well, with a few other cities in the greater East Texas area already asking for a charter. Our goal is not to grow fast, but to grow smart. We don’t just want a lot of members, we selfishly want a lot of members that really like what the society is – both in our monthly meetings and our long-term goals. We are more than happy to take our time finding those folks and letting them find us. That being said, please tell your friends! Cole and I have been pleasantly surprised with the response to the meetings. As I said before, we were nervous in the beginning that people might not share our enthusiasm for the history and details of each bourbon we try. We find that that is something our members not only like, but contribute to at each meeting in our group discussions. Our next goal to hit before we expand to include another charter will be to start hosting more frequent fundraisers within our community and expand our support that way. Johnny: When and where are you currently meeting?
and recognized something special enough to actually research it and figure out how it got there, learning about its process of taking their Kentucky Straight Bourbon and finishing it in a port wine cask. I was so impressed with it. It also opened my eyes to the fact that a traditional Kentucky bourbon accounts for one branch on the bourbon family tree. It is still a regular favorite of mine. choking if we’re in a eating establishment. Johnny: What’s on the radar for the rest of the year? Cody: I’m currently working on demos for what will be the debut record. I still love to play as much as possible so I’m endeavoring to branch out too far away hamlets, but as the Bugman use to say, “You don’t take to the road without a product to sell.” Johnny: Are there any gigs that stick out in your mind as a favorite so far? Cody: Clicks Live, we played July 13th and it was a great show. Even though we didn’t have a huge crowd, they gave us the necessary motivation. Johnny: What do you hope new listeners take away from their first show with The Groove Slaves? Cody: My hope is that people walk away musically invigorated with a sense that rock has only been in a deep slumber and is certainly NOT dead. Check out The Groove Slaves at facebook.com/The-Groove-Slaves.
The Groove Slaves: Keeping The Rock Alive By Johnny Griffith There are certainly plenty of bands in the East Texas area. One thing we’ve always been able to pride ourselves on is the ability to produce great musicians and great music. Like all living things, the music scene in the area is always moving, shifting, and evolving with current trends, what sells, and what will bring people to the venues. Occasionally though, there are bands that will buck the trends and stick to their guns when it comes to the style and sound they want to play and The Groove Slaves is one of those bands. Perhaps one of Tyler’s best-kept secrets, The Groove Slaves have one of the more seasoned lineups of musicians and with extensive touring and gigging experience, they bring to the stage enthusiasm and proficiency. With a setlist full of songs that are sure to please, they play what they like and live to play. I caught up recently to Cody Norman to get more info on the band. Johnny: Who makes up The Groove Slaves? Cody: The band is Tony Marsh on lead guitar, Jim Holley on bass, Kevin Schermerhorn on drums and backing vocals, and myself on rhythm guitar and lead vocals. Johnny: Give us a brief musical background on everyone. Cody: Tony was born in Orlando, but has spent most of his life in Texas. He’s played in Tyler with both Hobbit and Lix. Jim is a homegrown Tylerite and played alongside Tony in Loco Joe as well as with many other Tyler bands. Additionally, he owns Center Stage Music where Tony teaches guitar. Kevin is from New Jersey but has lived in Texas since high school and has played with Mike Morgan and Wanda King as well as various other artists. I was born in Rusk and after moving to Tyler began playing drums with Jay Johnson and Richard Raines in The Traffic Jam. Soon after that, I became Bugs Henderson’s drummer, as well as played with Smokin Joe Kubeck and Lance Lopez. I still drum for Mark David Manders occasionally too. Johnny: How did you all meet? Cody: I’ve known Tony and Jim through Center Stage Music store for several years and played with Tony in a country band. Kevin and I met while in high school. I had been playing drums for a couple of years when Kev moved to town. This guy had just picked up the sticks and was so amazing he inspired me to dig deeper into the instrument. We also knew each other from playing in rural rival bands: me with Voyer, and Kev with Spittin Image. Kevin still inspires me with his relentless work ethic and unbridled enthusiasm. Having played drums for as long as I have, he’s the only one I want behind me. Kev is still in demand as a solid player in Dallas and East Texas, so on nights when he’s unavailable, I double up and sing while playing acoustic guitar half a set, then move behind the kit and sing from there. Johnny: How did the idea for the band originate? Cody: The band was formed in Dallas around 1992. I was playing for the late, great Bugs Henderson at the time and on the road a lot as well as recording. We were approached by Lisa Dupree, a local music lover, to be the house band at the Greenville Bar & Grill for the Blue Monday Jam every week. Little did we know how cool this opportunity was. All the touring acts that came through Dallas would stop by to sit in as well as the local crop of talent. On any given night you might get to hear Coco Montoya, The Killer B’s, or maybe some guys from Megadeath or The Spin Doctors. If you were at the right spot at the right time you got to play with them as well. Our band would start off the night, then the jam would commence, improvising off of a loose arrangement became our formula. From “The World is a Ghetto” to

“Third Stone From the Sun,” we embellished our own brand of covers. Our biggest show was in Deep Ellum where we opened up for the Dixie Chicks and Ray Wylie Hubbard on the same night. I was even asked by Ray to sit in on drums because his guy didn’t show. The band ran out of gas once we were out of Bugs’s band and relocated to east Texas. Johnny: What was the first Groove Slaves gig? Cody: The debut gig was the Greenville Bar & Grill. We were young guns and might have rubbed some people the wrong way. The blues purists probably thought we should slow down and play less chops, but we only knew one way to do it. Bugs had taught us to slay all those within earshot. Johnny: You play a great mix of songs...what genre would you consider your wheelhouse? Cody: Thanks Johnny, I always hope there is an interesting mix of styles, textures, colors, and energy to the music we play. I’d have to say Melodic Rock is our forte. I started out on guitar five years ago with Jimi Hendrix as my hero. Knowing I could never play like that, I began to search for his influences. He loved Dylan’s songwriting so I immersed myself in him and found out what songwriting is all about. I bought one of his songbooks and felt like I was setting out to change the system of humanity. Johnny: What’s the farthest you’ve traveled for a gig? Cody: With the current lineup we’ve played only here in East Texas. This band has had a plethora of unique and talented musicians that have toured Europe, Canada, and all over the United States when we began the band, while still on the road with Bugs. The Bugman gave us two or three songs a night to stretch out on by ourselves. He was such a monster player to learn from. No matter where we were or what it took to get there, he brought the meat AND the fire to cook it! Johnny: About how many shows are you playing a month these days? Cody: It inevitably varies but we play about three shows a month. I also play solo shows frequently so I try to balance the two. Johnny: Are you primarily a cover band or are you working originals in as well? Cody: I’ve found in Tyler we tend to keep people more engaged when we play familiar songs. Depending on the venue and crowd, I sprinkle in my stuff. I’m writing the songs so it has to be something I think I can pull off. Johnny: How would you describe a typical Groove Slaves show? Cody: The first half of the set is played on acoustic guitar with me sitting where we do the more gentle numbers. After massaging the patrons with sweet slow to medium arrangements, we cut loose. I pick up the electric guitar and we try to ignite whatever pressure and intensity we can muster with more upbeat and gritty selections. The sets are split like this to accommodate those who wish to refrain from

Katie and The Vines: Partners In The Music By Johnny Griffith Occasionally voices come along that cut through the noise of a crowded room or bar and make you sit up and take notice. No matter what you’re doing, who you’re talking to, or where you are...when you hear a voice like that it compels you to listen. If you’ve had the opportunity to hear Katie and The Vines recently, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Comprised of husband and wife duo Katie Lee and Chase Nick, Katie and The Vines blends blues, soul, rock, and country with the vocal stylings of Katie which are sure to leave you wanting more. We sat down with them recently to get a bit more insight into Katie and The Vines. Johnny: What is the current lineup of Katie and The Vines? Katie: Primarily it’s Katie (lead singer) and Chase (acoustic guitar/bass player). We use other musicians on occasion depending on the show and the schedule but right now it’s mainly us two. Johnny: How did you two meet? Katie: Chase and I met each other once I moved to Tyler. I was friends with his bandmates, so once he joined their band, we got introduced. Johnny: Give us a little background on you two. Katie: I grew up in Keller, Texas. I made the decision to move to Tyler in August of 2013 for music. There was a music producer who worked at Studio 333 at Kiepersol in Bullard that I signed a contract with. A few songs were produced and I was able to get some performing in as well. Unfortunately, he ended up moving back to Alabama where he was from. The good news was that I met my husband Chase when I moved to Tyler. Although my plan did not work out the way I wanted it to, I met the love of my life. Chase: I was born and raised in Tyler. I went to Grace Community and then to Robert E Lee, graduating in 2009. I started playing bass guitar around 15 years old and haven’t stopped since. I have been in four bands including Eli’s Redemption and Blacktop Mojo. Now, I focus my time on Katie and the Vines and playing bass at Rose Heights Church.

Johnny: Where did the idea for the band originate? Katie: Funny story. I was asked to perform at a Kiepersol Wine Festival back in 2013. I did not have a band, so I asked my friends from Eli’s Redemption (a local band at the time) to help me out. We obviously did not have a name for us at that event so we just came up with Katie and the Vines. There was really no reason other than it was just me singing, hence Katie, and I think they called themselves Vines because we were at the vineyards! It just made sense somehow. It really became a joke between us for a long time. Eventually, once Chase and I decided to form our own band, the name was revived and we went with it. Johnny: You play a pretty broad mix of music in your shows. Do you have any particular favorite? Katie: We love all kinds of music but I probably lean more toward blues and soul, and Chase likes rock. We try to incorporate both as well as other crowd favorites depending on the show. Johnny: What was your first gig? Katie: Our first real gig was at Dakota’s in Tyler. Johnny: Are you primarily a cover band or are there originals that you’ll pull out on occasion? Katie: We are primarily a cover band but we have some originals up our sleeve that we like to work in depending on the show and the setting. We’re hoping to get them recorded next year. Johnny: How would you describe a typical Katie and The Vines show? Katie: Fun! We want people to relax and enjoy music. Johnny: Are there any gigs that stick out in your mind as a favorite so far? Katie: We’d have to say the show at Dakotas! The crowd was so responsive and had fun with us! It always makes the show more fun for us if we know

Food Green Goat Winery & Vineyard:
“Wine is Sunlight Held Together by Water” By Barbara Greenbauer Nestled in the countryside outside of Edom is an oasis that is a totally unexpected treat to the senses. Green Goat Winery and Vineyard, established in 2015, is the passion and dream of Rip and Cindy Cunningham, the husband and wife team that envisioned a vineyard oasis. On their 22-acre property, the rows and rows of gleaming grapes catch your eye as you turn up the road onto the property. Six acres of land are given over to the succulent fruit, shimmering in the sun in hues of purples, golds, and greens. Farther up the country road is the winery and tasting room, a testament to the fact that production is a local, hands-on affair, from harvest to bottle, and a labor of love for the couple. Both Rip and Cindy have “full time” jobs, but spend all their spare time out in the fields, netting, irrigating, and tending to the grapes. Wine production from grapes is a five-step, time-intensive process: harvesting, crushing and pressing, fermenting, clarification (removing solids such as tannins and proteins), racking (transfer to oak barrels or steel tanks), corking, and bottling. Green Goat wines are made right on the premises, and a behind the scenes tour showcases the gleaming tanks and corking machinery plus thousands of bottles ready to be filled and labelled. “In 2016, we ended up with about 4,000 bottles of wine, and this year we are anticipating about 6,000,” explained Rip. The above ground wine cellar is full of glistening reds and whites, topped off with the distinctive Green Goat Winery logo. The winery is currently offering six different varieties of wine, and the varied assortment is sure to please everyone’s palette. “We are constantly testing throughout the entire process and making changes to make sure our wine is up to our own expectations,” said Rip. The tasting

Theatre Memberships Available for CCT’s 2018-19 Season Promises Fun Galore If you love the theatre, does the Cherokee
Civic Theatre have a deal for you! The Cherokee Civic Theatre’s (CCT) annual membership drive is open, and theater patrons are invited to cash in on the deals, steals, perks, and privileges that come with being a CCT member. “With the price of movie tickets and concessions on the rise, becoming a member of the Theatre really is the best bang for your entertainment buck,” CCT Vice President of Membership, Carol Dilliard said. CCT audiences are treated to a traditional season of four full-length live-theater productions including at least one musical and a Christmas show which runs from October through April. “The show would not go on without our patrons, members, and volunteers,” longtime theater volunteer and board member Jerry Parker said. “We appreciate so much the support of all our members and patrons – you’re why we do this in the first place.” The First Night membership package starts at $50 and includes one ticket to every show, reserved seating, mailed reminders of upcoming productions, recognition in every show’s program, discounts on additional tickets, and voting privileges at the theater’s annual meeting. Student memberships and junior memberships are also available for $25 and $10, respectively. Contact the CCT Box Office at (903)683-2131 or visit cherokeetheatre.net to become a CCT Patron member. This season’s line up of plays begins this fall with the musical, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” set for October 6th-7th and 12th-14th. The annual Christmas play, “Scrooge of the West,” hits the stage December 7th-9th and features a holiday classic with an old West twist, written by longtime CCT alum and Rusk resident Sheilah O’Heaney. The spring production, set for February 23rd-24th and March 1st-2nd, showcases the world premiere of “A.M WWJG,” penned by another local writer, Minette Bryant, of Jacksonville. The final show of the 2018-19 season is “Leading Ladies” by Ken Ludwig, set for May 4th-5th and 10th-11th. Proceeds from shows, season ticket memberships, and donations help keep the theater moving forward. The all-volunteer, non-profit organization has dedicated more than 45 years to bringing the dramatic arts to the greater East Texas area. According to the CCT’s website, the group’s mission is “to afford opportunities for cultural and artistic enrichment in East Texas by providing a venue for local talent to produce live theater for the entertainment of diverse audiences. Our goal is to educate both youth and adults in all aspects of the theater and to encourage volunteers to learn and showcase their skills both on and off the stage.” Get Involved Adults can get in on the fun during Cherokee Civic Theatre’s regular season, both in front of and
behind the curtain. “You can get involved by being cast in a show or by volunteering for backstage positions like stage manager, set or sound design, lighting and costume design,” CCT board member Lisa Pierce said. “There is no experience required, just show up on the audition day. There is no shortage of ways to get involved here.” The Cherokee Civic Theatre is located at 157 W. Fifth St., just off the square in Downtown Rusk. Tickets are available for the entire season or for individually for at cherokeetheatre.net.

July 26th-August 12th (Friday-Saturday at 7:30pm, Sunday at 2:30pm): “Singing in the Rain” - The “Greatest Movie Musical of All Time” is faithfully and lovingly adapted by Broadway legends Betty Comden and Adolph Green from their original award-winning screenplay in “Singin’ in the Rain.” Each unforgettable scene, song and dance is accounted for, including the show-stopping title number, complete with an onstage rainstorm! Hilarious situations, snappy dialogue, and a hit-parade score of Hollywood standards make “Singin’ in the Rain” the perfect entertainment for any fan of the golden age of movie musicals. “Singin’ in the Rain” has all the makings of a Tinseltown tabloid headline – the starlet, the leading man and a love affair that could change lives and make or break careers! In silent movies, Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are a hot item but behind the scenes, things aren’t always as they appear on the big screen! Meanwhile, Lina’s squeaky voice might be the end of her career in “talking pictures” without the help of a talented young actress to do the talking and singing for her. Filled with every memorable moment from the film and a downpour of unforgettable songs, “Singin’ in the Rain” is a guaranteed hit. Tyler Civic Theatre is located at 400 Rose Park Dr., Tyler, next to the Tyler Rose Garden Center. For more info call (903)592-0561 or go to tylercivictheatre.com. September 13th-22nd (Friday-Saturday at 7:30pm): “The Odd Couple” will be on the stage at Henderson County Performance Center. This Tony Award winning play never grows old. Oscar and Felix become the ultimate roommates when their wives leave them. Felix’s fastidious, depressed, tense, clean freakiness drives Oscar nuts as he is the exact opposite. Don’t miss this hilarious show! Henderson County Performance Center is located at 400 Gibson Rd., Athens. For more info call (903)675-3908 or go to hcpac.org.

Art
Inside the Artist’s Studio
Dedicated Young Warrior:
The Art and Illustrations of Micah Lewis By Derrick White “I continually push myself to try a new medium or style, or just simply work harder with what I’ve got. I’ve grown to love studies in my sketchbooks and understand the importance of slowing down for a bit and working out the kinks or just wrapping my mind around how to draw something,” states local artist Micah Lewis. In my career as an art professor at TJC, I work with many students who aspire to become professional artists. After decades of instructing, I have found the most important qualities in making the dream of living as a professional artist come true are dedication and perseverance. Those who are truly dedicated to their art and process will succeed and they persist through all setbacks. Micah Lewis is one such devoted artist living and working from the red brick streets in downtown Tyler. My first introduction to Micah was through a Facebook page coordinating Free Art Fridays encouraging participants to place or seek hidden art in downtown Tyler and beyond. We have connected through social media, and I have had the pleasure of meeting her in real life at local establishments. Through her posts and comments one can conclude she is a fun, determined, dedicated, persistent and successful artist. In addition to being a professional artist, Micah is also a committed wife and mother. Her web site describes Micah as, “a self-taught artist who finds beauty in all of God’s

Curated by Caleb Bell, the exhibition features close to 30 works surveying the prolific career of Bates, one of the most versatile and widely collected contemporary Texas artists. Spanning art from 1982 to 2016, works in the show highlight several of Bates’ most celebrated series and include a wide array of media: oil painting, lithographs, woodcuts, screenprints, and bronze sculpture. The show was assembled from art in public and private collections throughout the state, including the museum’s own permanent collection. Bates’ work is widely exhibited and included in several museum and corporate art collections. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for seniors. Museum members, students, TJC faculty/staff, and city of Tyler employees are admitted free. Support for exhibit is provided by The Byars Foundation. 22 • EGuideMagazine.com
creation, particularly in people… and coffee. Having a heart for creativity from a young age, she draws inspiration from tattoo art, comic books, or old Godzilla movies. Additionally, she has a peculiar knack for portraits where she can capture the natural emotion present in each subject.” “My formal training was limited to half a semester of art during my sophomore year of high school. Somehow, I ended up in a class full of students just attempting to fill a credit. It was a disruptive environment in which the other students regularly sabotaged my projects. So, my path has been one of self-learning with trial and error,” says Lewis. Micah’s art is influenced by comic book art and executed through her unique surrealist lens. She considers her style of art lowbrow and also enjoys painting watercolor portraits. She states, “Four years ago, if someone told me I would love watercolor and use it almost daily, I would not have believed it. I used to loathe watercolor. It didn’t seem like there was a lot of control. It just wasn’t as smooth as I like. When I revisited the concept after a few years I fell in love. I really and truly enjoy creating with watercolor. In achieving a variety of line weights, I use a Pentel pocket brush pen (typically used for calligraphy). I love the contrast inking gives my pieces. It pulls the soft washes together with bolder, inconsistent lines.” Like many artists, Micah can trace her inspiration back to childhood. “It’s difficult to pinpoint. The earliest drawings I recall were on the inside cover of the coloring books my sisters and I had. Coloring a picture felt like more of a chore to me. So, I just drew my own pictures on the blank inner covers. Sorry, Lisa Frank! When I got a bit older, I kept a sketchbook. It just became a part of who I am. It is shocking to me I became a professional artist. It still baffles me. I remember telling people I wanted to be an artist when I grew up as early as first grade, and maybe I was just too stubborn to not make it happen,” states the artist. For Micah, dedication and perseverance in her art means growth. She explains, “I can always learn, study, and work towards improvement. Finding a voice is difficult; especially given the understanding your audience may never quite comprehend the images in your mind and the emotions accompanying those images. I think it is pretty easy to pander to your audience with the pressure for success but creating, for me, was never meant to be superficial. communication on a deep level of who we are and the emotions driving us as people. Art should be a connection, but not a cheap one. I still have to remind myself of this from time to time and just strive to be authentic.” Micah Lewis finds inspiration in the work of other artists, citing one of her favorites is Berlinde de Bruyckere (a Belgian contemporary artist sculpting unsettling forms in various media including wax, wood, wool, horse skin, and hair. She also works in watercolor). “I hope one day I have the opportunity to meet her or just experience one of her installations in person. Her ability to sculpt with wax, wood, and natural fibers is pure wizardry and you’ll never convince me otherwise. I have a copy of her book, “In the Woods There Were Chainsaws.” The pages are yellowed and warped and the spine has a gash in it, but it’s only because I’ve loved it so dang much. I draw so much inspiration from her dedication to detail,” exclaims Lewis. Micah’s life and art career are very busy with multiple upcoming projects. “This summer, I will be working on a few murals around Tyler, one for Strada Caffè and I am also working on a few murals at True Vine Brewing Company in their new location (2453 Earl Campbell Pkwy.) and later this year, I’m excited to curate my first show for The Foundry Coffee House in downtown Tyler. Submissions will start in November and the show will open in January. I’m excited to meet new artists and take

Because of Zeca’s capable management, the once decaying hotel, rose from the ashes to become a mecca for those seeking assisted dying. On the other side of this coin is Rab and a small group of cohorts, who are on a Popefunded mission to destroy the hotel because of the Catholic, anti-assisted death platform. Rab, who once supported assisted-suicide with a great passion, now has turned those passions against the Hotel Euthanasia and all that it represents and assumes his leadership role with great vigor. Along the way, we are introduced to an group of people from various walks of life who are guests at the Hotel and are seeking release from their earthly bodies in one of the various ways offered by the Hotel. The backstories of these people could be novels in and of themselves, but bound together they comprise a very interesting read filled with different ways to look at euthanasia. And while some readers might find the whole concept exceptionally macabre, the idea behind it certainly carries merit for those facing a lifetime of pain (however long) and an eventual death. Rating: 5 of 5, Copyright 2017 – Ringwood Publishing “Dark Places” by Gillian Flynn Told from various characters’ points of view, this book is Gillian Flynn’s (“Gone Girl” and “Sharp Objects”) second novel, published in 2009 and made into a movie in 2015 starring Charlize Theron. Based on a fictitious satanic murder of a family in Kinnakee, Kansas, “Dark Places” follows the investigation that Libby Day, who was 7 at the time her family was murdered, undertakes to find out who actually killed 3 members of her family. If she can find the real murderer, her brother Ben will be freed from prison where he has been held for 25 years, mostly because of her coached testimony during the trial. Funded and aided by the Kill Club members who believe in her brother’s innocence, Libby finally opens the boxes that hold a lot of family secrets that provide her with leads to the various people who wandered in and out of the Days’ lives 25 years ago prior to their grizzley murders. As usual, Gillian Flynn has written a pageturning, spell-binder that keeps you guessing till the very end about “who dun it!” Flynn has filled this novel with characters as raw and real as possible, so real that you will find yourself drawn into their hard lives and perhaps even develop compassion for what they faced. As with Flynn’s other books, this one is definitely worth the read and will keep you turning the pages until the very end. Rating: 5 of 5, Copyright 2009 – Broadway Books
