Food A Much Needed Niche in the Dining Scene Written and Photographed by Barbara King Let’s discuss a hidden gem in Lindale that’s like no other. A tribute to the best Asian cuisine added to the ambience of upscale dining, and you have Leo’s...a dining experience of unparalleled excellence. Leo’s Asian Bistro is the epitome of a family affair, and this is evident in everything from the décor, to the food, to the exceptional service. The Crist family, formerly of Julian’s, bring their painstaking attention to detail, their love of family, and great food to their passion about their restaurant. They are pioneers in the concept and design of an open kitchen where you can sit right next to the sushi chef, have a drink and soak up the atmosphere. This is definitely a destination for fine dining with the flair and the exotic feel of the big city. Carey Crist is the effervescent “front man” of the business and he explains, “We want to bring a new and exciting option to dining that highlights the best of us. This is a dream and vision that we all share, and we are extremely proud of how it has evolved.” Brother and Chef Lonnie is the soft-spoken creative genius behind the spectacular dishes on the menu. “We utilize only fresh ingredients in all our dining options and offer healthy bowls and numerous gluten-free entrées as well.” It is truly a labor of love in the kitchen, with sauces prepared every day and with 95% of ingredients fresh, not frozen. Friday and Saturday nights feature spectacular sushi, surf-n-turf rolls, spicy and crunch rolls, lobster crunch and California favorites. More adventurous types can feast on tuna, salmon, and escolar sashimi or try the same options with Nigiri. You’re probably wondering where the moniker Leo’s comes from? The brothers love to recount the story from their childhood, when they teasingly referred to each other as “Leo.” “Now the nickname represents and symbolizes a partnership that we can’t walk away from,” explains Carey. Even their logo epitomizes the four branches of their business, the ‘o’ in Leo is a four cornered square, representing the two brothers and their wives. Service and relationship building is key to success, and one thing that is sure, you will be well taken care of during your dining experience. Carey and Stacey’s daughter Hayley will greet you with a great smile, and returning customers are remembered and called by name. The beautifully stocked bar is front and center, and guests are surprised to see wine on tap. The restaurant has already made a name for itself with specialty drinks like the fired up wok line martini, Leo’s Long Island and a plethora of Asian beers to choose from. Lindale’s Mayor Pro-Tem, Jeff Daugherty, was enjoying a father-daughter dinner date, with his daughter Regan Hutchinson. “We come here often,” Daugherty said. “It is a much welcomed addition to Lindale and fills a much needed niche in the dining scene.” Regan raved about the lettuce wraps and spring rolls they were sharing for appetizers, followed by teriyaki beef and orange
chicken. “Not only is the food excellent,” she said, “the service and attention to detail make it a great special evening.” The menu is extensive and Executive Chef Lonnie takes pride in both the taste and presentation. Appetizers run the gamut from crispy wonton strips to baby-bang shrimp and chicken (a gluten-free choice). Start your meal with an incredible soup like hot and sour, creamy cilantro or Thai coconut and lemongrass. Then make a salad choice, from mango shrimp, Leo’s spicy chicken or Thai steak. Leo’s bowls are legendary, including health bowls (carrots, onions, broccoli, ginger, mushroom with beef, chicken or shrimp), teriyaki chicken, Thaiphoon bowl (filet mignon wok seared with onions, mushrooms, cilantro, mint, basil, garlic, chili paste and soy sauce), Pad Thai noodle bowl, or a shrimp bowl. Entrées include all kinds of scrumptious chicken choices, including orange chicken, coconut curry chicken, sweet and sour, Leo’s own spicy chicken, Kung Pao, honey seared and sesame chicken. Of course there’s beef… Hibachi steak and lobster, mango beef, Kung Pao, pepper steak and sesame beef. Knowing the Crist family means that they value your family too, so there is a Lil’ Leo’s just for kids menu featuring vegetable fried rice, chicken bites with broccoli, and chicken and beef bowls. You can also call ahead and find out about the lunch specials and they will have your order ready for pickup. Additionally, Leo’s can cater an out of this world menu for your wedding, corporate event, family reunion and other special events. The Crist family lives in Lindale and supports the east Texas community. Tyler artist Amanda Slaughter’s vibrant art lines the walls, while the decadent cheesecakes come from local baker Bryan Méndez. “We have been humbled and blessed to be able to live and thrive in this community,” said Jennifer Crist, Chef Lonnie’s wife. Together
with Carey’s wife, Stacey, these four dynamic and very different personalities have created a labor of love that is a strong balance of love, family, and great food. “We make decisions together as a team, and Carey and Lonnie are strong leaders,” Jennifer said. We have the same goals: to build relationships, provide great food and service, and to make it a unique and special experience for everyone who comes through our doors.” “We have fun and get it done,” adds Stacey, “and as anyone who runs a small business knows, at the end of the day you have to love each other and love what you do.” As the night winds down, Lonnie and Jennifer’s daughter Skyla, 7 years old, gets a hug from dad and some specially made sushi as she shares her love of Leo’s, proudly telling of serving water and the after hours “dance off” she leads as everyone unwinds after a busy Saturday night. Join the Crist family and make Leo’s your next destination for an unforgettable adventure in dining! Leo’s Asian Bistro is located at 2808 South Main in Lindale in the Sherwin Williams Shopping Center. Hours are Tuesday-Thursday from 11am to 9pm, Friday and Saturday 11am to 10pm. Leo’s is closed Sunday and Monday. Call (903)882-5367 or www.leosasianbistro.com or on Facebook leosasianbistro.

Tyler Paddle: Have Fun, Exercise and Splash Around
Written and Photographed by Barbara King Imagine being out on the lake, relaxing and maybe even meditating as you propel your paddleboard across the calm waters. You can get out on the water, have fun, get some exercise and splash around without having to invest thousands in an expensive boat or jet ski. Tyler Paddle, situated on Lake Tyler at the Petroleum Club, wants to introduce you to the art of the paddle board. In the early 1930’s, Thomas Edward Blake fashioned a replica of a Hawaiian surfboard ridden by ancient Hawaiian kings. He greatly influenced the use of hollow boards called “cigar boards” or “kook boxes.” In 1996 there was a resurgence in paddle boarding with lighter epoxy boards on the water in Hawaii and California. Peter Villa, originally from New York, and his wife Amanda Schwartz turned their hobby into a business in May 2014 and have never looked back. You’ll understand right away how laid back and fun this business really is when you pull up and see the Tyler Paddle trailer, the boards lined up at the shore, and Villa himself relaxing on a hammock, awaiting clients ready to get out on the water. The cove on the lake is a wake-free zone, so customers can take their time getting used to paddling, kneeling or standing and finding their balance. “Paddle boarding is great exercise,” explains Villa. “It’s beneficial for core and upper body strength, and we have some folks who even practice yoga on the boards.” Villa has rented boards to all ages, from kids to seniors, swimmers and non-swimmers. Each board has a foot tether and comes with a life jacket. The boards, made from epoxy plastic weigh about 20 pounds, and the accompanying paddles, made from carbon fiber, are lightweight too. You don’t need a membership to the Petroleum Club, as Villa subleases his spot, in partnership with the club. Just drive in the front gate, and you will see Villa set up in the first driveway on the right by the shore. Villa provides customers with an explanation of the easy procedures involved in getting on the board, turning it in the water, standing and kneeling before the boards ever enter the water. “It is a relaxing, inexpensive way to get out on the water, clear your head, and get some exercise,” says Villa. “We are all about promoting getting outside, spending some quality time with family, and exploring a new, fun activity.” You will see lots of paddle boarding in larger cities like Dallas and Austin, and Villa saw a market for East Texas folks, even those with lake houses on the water. A car pulls up and Mitzi Hildreth and her two daughters, Anna (12) and Ella (10), are ready to roll. The two girls have paddle boarded before and hit the water immediately like old pros. Mom, Mitzi, takes her time, with some well-meaning bantering from the girls, cautioning her not to tip the board, but it doesn’t take long before she’s up and standing on the board. Villa has 8 boards currently for rentals, and will even transport the boards to other locations like Lake Palestine. “We have done a lot of special corporate rentals, fundraisers, parties, and family reunions on the lake,” he explained. One hour board rentals are $30, with two boards for $50. Tyler Paddle also has a neat collaboration with The Yoga Spot: you can get your yoga on the boards every Saturday at 12 noon. Classes are limited and reservations need to be made in advance at www.theyogaspot-tyler.com or (903)747-3916. Villa sees expansion in their future, maybe with a second spot on Lake Tyler or maybe on Lake Palestine, but they are busy every weekend, getting people out having fun on the water. And it’s catching on, as this Saturday afternoon you can hear the laughter resonating off the water as people test their paddle boarding skills. Tyler Paddle is open every weekend Friday and Saturday, 12 noon-7pm, and Sunday 2-7pm. To make reservations call (347)443-0900 or tylerpaddle.com or check them out on Facebook at “tylerpaddle.” Tyler Paddle is located at 15898 Eastside Road at the Petroleum Club on Lake Tyler. Put your phone and iPad away and head to the lake for some rest, relaxation and paddle boarding!
“Make a Difference, Be the Change” Garage Sale
Saturday, July 11th you can make a difference! This is not your normal garage sale. This isn’t just to get rid of those things that may be cluttering your closets - this is all about raising some money to help those in need! Proceeds from this garage sale will be split between two charities, Pets Fur People and The Water Project. Pets Fur People (petsfurpeople.org) needs our help or they will have to close their doors at the end of the summer. Most of the funds raised will go to this worthy cause. But a portion of the donations will go to an amazing organization called The Water Project (thewaterproject.org). These guys help people all around the world have access to clean water. Either way, you CAN make a difference by being a part! There will be loads of “normal” garage sale items and so much more. Liberty Hall Theater has donated two tickets to an upcoming show. The Tyler Museum of Art also has donated tickets to their upcoming Lego exhibition. EGuide has donated 2 Schlitterbahn Galveston tickets too. Another cool garage sale item will be coming from the very awesome Geek World shop. There will be a Lemonade Stand with cookies, coffee in the morning, lunch catered from Taco Bueno (they donate %15 of your catering total to the charity of your choice). This will be held 9am-4:30pm at 621 W. Houston St., Tyler. Make a difference - be part of change! See you there!
“Tornado Alley:”
The Center for Earth & Space Science Education Continuing thru Wednesday, September 10th, you can learn more about the force of one of nature’s most destructive weather events – the infamous tornado, in “Tornado Alley,” at CESSE’s digital 40-foot Dome Theatre on TJC’s campus. “Tornado Alley” follows Sean Casey (Discovery Channel’s “Storm Chasers” series) and researchers from the Vortex2 initiative on a journey to bear down on a tornado at the closest proximity possible. Narrated by actor Bill Paxton (“Twister”), “Tornado Alley” chronicles storm chasers as they head out into gale force winds, torrential rains and hail, while measuring storms with advanced weather-gauging instruments and gathering extreme weather data never collected before. Casey and his crew are armed with a 70mm camera, as well as armored vehicles built to withstand the harshest of weather systems. Viewers get to share the ride with Vortex2 researchers as they aim to infiltrate the tornado’s inner core and record scientific data. Children, students and seniors can attend for $5, adults for $7. The Center for Earth & Space Science Education is located on the Tyler Junior College Campus at 1411 E. Lake Street in Tyler. For more information visit www.tjc.edu/cesse.

Rosevine Inn:
Tyler’s Hidden Gem Written and Photographed by Barbara King Nestled off the busy downtown core on Vine Street in Tyler is a quaint, charming getaway that’s a little bit of heaven, romantically monikered the Rosevine Inn. Innkeepers extraordinaire Bert and Becca Powell are the congenial hosts for a stay that is whatever you envision: from a private, secluded honeymoon retreat to a jovial, gamefilled weekend away. The Powells have built a peaceful hidden sanctuary of a B&B like no other, from charming rooms in the main house, to a secret-filled cottage, to extended stay suites. Driving down Vine St., it’s hard not to miss the beautiful brick main house, but most folks aren’t aware of the rest of the village hidden just behind. “The original house, built in the 1930’s burned to the ground in the 1960’s,” explains Powell. “We rebuilt and opened the Inn in 1986 honoring the footprint of the original house.” The furnishings and decorative embellishments all reflect the time period of the 1930’s, and the main house has a charming, antique flair. The main house boasts four guest rooms, aptly named Rose, Azalea, Blue Bonnet, and Sunshine Rooms. Depending on your requirements, you can choose rooms with high-backed antique beds, fireplaces, twin beds, a brass queen bed with matching daybed or sofa. Rooms are complete with internet, flat screen TVs, and private baths. Prepare to be spoiled with luxury robes and 600 count sheets and some delectable baked goodies upon your arrival. The room rates vary anywhere from $129 to $199 depending on size and amenities, such as private baths. The rooms and grounds are spacious and immaculate, and guests are encouraged to explore and wander at their leisure. “Becca’s skills in the kitchen definitely shine,” explains Bert, “and every morning guests are treated to a legendary breakfast, with everything from quiches, muffins, banana bread, fresh fruit, coffee cakes and frittatas.” Large doors open off the dining room leading into a relaxing New-Orleans-style courtyard, which features a beautiful fountain and a fireplace. The hosts light a fire every morning, and you might even be treated to some bubbles and music thrown into the mix. There are all sorts of nooks and crannies to relax and chill out in, from a tree-house with comfy chairs to curl up in, to a nostalgic barn with stone floors and fireplace. A climb-up to the second floor of the barn reveals Peruvian hammocks perfect for an afternoon siesta or a good read. The barn also boasts a pool table, and Bert has been known to join in a rousing challenge match or two. The Powells are great entertainers, and the Inn is big in the games department. You can indulge in the hot tub in the outdoor pavilion followed by a rousing game of volleyball, bocce ball, ping pong, darts, badminton or horseshoes. The Inn is situated close to downtown, shopping and restaurants, and the Powells are more than happy to give recommendations and even have menus available for local dining options. The Inn has hosted guests from all across Texas, Louisiana, Boston, South Carolina, and even as far removed as France and Germany. “We pay attention to detail,” explains Powell, “right down to dietary

needs like gluten-free or sugar-free options for breakfast.” The B&B is the perfect location for a girlfriend getaway, anniversary or family reunion. “We have had families reserve the entire main house,” said Bert. “Sometimes the ladies will go shop and the men play pool, have a beer in the tree-house and everybody’s happy.” The Inn also has a special sweetheart package which includes roses, chocolates and a bottle of bubbly for $50. Discounts are available for guests booking more than a two night stay and also for returning guests. The authentic 30’s style lends itself to some terrific themed rooms for extended stays like the Roosevelt suite, the Charles Lindbergh, and the Bonnie and Clyde suite, complete with pictures of the notorious sweethearts. “We get a lot of nurses and other professionals who come into town for longer periods of time,” said Bert, “and we are able to offer them extended-stay suites that are perfect for them.” The suites all have full kitchens, private baths, and dining rooms. The Sherlock Holmes suite is actually a standalone quaint cottage, decorated in true Sherlock style, and guests are challenged by the Innkeepers to channel their inner sleuths to find the two secret doors for a hidden prize to begin their stay. Guests staying in the Holmes suite awaken to the smell of fresh coffee and breakfast delivered to the dining room in the cottage. “The owner of the cottage was Martha Watson, a birder and gardener and a lot of the pictures and furnishings in the cottage are authentic,” says Bert. The feel of the Inn is friendly, cozy and comfortable, and guests are likely to find themselves breaking bread and having conversations with Bert and Becca in the dining room during the breakfast hour. Check in is between 3-5pm, but the Powells believe in the note system, with posted reminders about scheduling breakfast, internet access and other pertinent information. Books Summer Means Lots of Time for Reading By Gini Rainey
“Finding the Rainbow – A Chilton Crosse Novel” by Traci Borum
This is the second of a series of books written by Traci Borum in her Chilton Crosse series, the first being “Painting the Moon,” which I reviewed in January of this year. If you read that review, then you will recall that Ms. Borum lives in Tyler, where she teaches writing at Tyler Junior College. Once again, she asked if I would be interested in reading and reviewing her latest novel. I must admit, this always is a real treat for me, and this book was no exception. Set in the same village of Chilton Crosse in The Cotswalds, an area in south central England, and centers around the life of Holly Newbury and her family. Holly had a small introduction to the readers of Borum’s first novel. In this book, Holly still is working part time at the gallery, taking internet college courses and is helping her widowed father raise her three younger sisters. This book is greatly influenced by the writings of Jane Austen, specifically her novel “Emma,” which just so happens to be Holly’s favorite book and is also the inspiration behind the movie being filmed at the Manor, just outside the village. If you’re not familiar with “Emma,” Jane Austen’s main character overestimates her own match making abilities and is blind to the dangers of meddling in other people’s lives; and her imagination and perceptions often lead her astray. In an attempt to convince her father’s crusty old spinster cousin of the merits of “Emma,” Holly starts a book club whose purpose is to read and study the novel. She also encourages the writer of the movie’s screenplay, Fletcher Hays, to join the book club, along with many of the other members of the Chilton Crosse community. Not surprisingly, there is a great deal of romance afoot in this novel, along with young people finding their way, lots of people meddling in everyone’s lives, interesting plots that twist and turn, intrigue and, oh, did I mention romance? This is a delightful read for summertime mind-escapes and mini-cations with a hammock and lemonade right in your own back yard. I’m so glad that Traci Borum has created the magical village of Chilton Crosse, and I hope to visit there again soon. My only concern is that, because this is working so well for her, she might fall into the trap a lot of authors seem to do by finding a formula that works and not varying from it. in the passions that begin to build between the two main characters from the very start of the book. Not only does the book take place in London, but it also moves to the Duke’s seaside estate, where their blooming romance takes on a whole new intensity. With an unusual knack for describing, not only feelings, but also places, Ms. Russell is able to make the reader feel the ocean breezes, smell the fresh air and almost sense the cold water of the sea lapping around their ankles. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, and even though I had a sense of many of the mysteries surrounding the pasts of both the Duke and the Dressmaker, there were one or two surprises revealed at the end of the book that kept me reading straight through to their discovery. This is a great escape novel that is perfect for summer reading while curled up in a chair at home or stretched out in a chair by the pool or on the beach. Rating: 5 of 5, Copyright 2014 – The Wild Rose Press, Inc. Here are a couple more great, short reads for the summer. One will open your mind and the other will blow you away!
“The Story of My Life” by Helen Keller
It seems to me that everything I know about Helen Keller has come from everyone but her. Helen’s story, told from her perspective, began when, at the age of 18 months, she suffered from a severe illness that left her deaf and blind, as well as mute. Helen sharing her tenacious struggle to overcome these mind-boggling disabilities should be an inspiration to anyone who reads this story from Helen’s point of view. It is amazing how she viewed everything in her life as an opportunity, rather than a stumbling block. Helen, later in life, had the ability to fight to help solve the problems of the world in her role as a social activist. This short, 75-page book, filled with stunning optimism and hope, is not only an excellent read for adults, but also for the young people in your life. Helen’s dedication to overcoming her disabilities should be a guide post for anyone who thinks life has dealt them a bad hand. I encourage you to take the time to read Helen’s story of courage, determination and inspiration. Rating: 4 of 5, New Edition Copyright 1996 – Dover Publications
“Poop, Booze and Bikinis” by Ed Robinson
Now for something completely different! If you’ve ever wanted the inside information about what it’s like to live on a boat, Robinson’s short, little book will give you the low-down! Robinson, an Amazon best seller in multiple categories, and a boat-liver, tells all about life on-board a boat from his humorous perspective. Covering the funnier side of issues faced by boaters of all types, he’s sure to have you, if not laughing yourself overboard, at least smiling ear-to-ear with all of his reflections made from the deck of his own Florida-based cruiser where he and his wife live. If you aspire to live in paradise one day, this is a must read, whether you will live on a boat or not. With Ed’s humorous outlook on life, you’ll be able to make some very wise choices about whether or not to take the boat-plunge. This definitely is a book about not necessarily everything you need to know about boating, but rather, it is a lighthearted, easy-to-read book that was a nice break from some of the more weighty issues in life. Rating: 4 of 5, Copyright 2014 – Leap of Faith Publications
“The Dressmaker’s Duke” by Jess Russell
This debut romantic novel by Jess Russell is also set in England, but during the early 1800’s. It falls into the fairly new category of Regency romances which are a subgenre of romance novels set during the period of the British Regency (1811– 1820) or early 19th century. Rather than simply being versions of contemporary romance stories transported to a historical setting, Regency romances are a distinct genre with their own plot and stylistic conventions. “The Dressmaker’s Duke” is definitely not your typical first novel attempt. Rather, it has the characteristics of a well-written novel with a wonderful combination of excellently researched historical detail, as well as being a really great and captivating romance. I don’t usually read romance novels, but this book that centers around the life of the Duke, Rhys Merrick, and the dressmaker, Olivia Weston, is one romance novel that I had difficulty putting down. Although Rhys and Olivia are from two separate worlds, the tangible sexual tension is apparent from the first moment they meet. Because Ms. Russell has the ability to create amazingly realistic characters, it didn’t take long to for me to develop a real interest

Music “We Play for Fun but Mostly We Play for the Fans” By Reid Kerr If you’ve been in an East Texas bar, club, or any other weekend gathering place over the last nine years, there’s a good chance you’ve already seen TEAZUR performing, performing their fresh approach to classic rock. After nine years as a band, TEAZUR is a well-established, steadilygigging road machine. In 2015, they’ll be playing fifty of the fifty-two weekends of the year somewhere. That’s a pretty hectic schedule for four guys with full-time jobs, but they say they wouldn’t have it any other way. “We had one weekend off this year, and I think we have one more at the end of the year,” drummer and founder Mike Reiner said. “It’s awesome. Me and Tobie (Turner, lead vocalist) have talked about it, how we think it would be nice to have a weekend off sometimes. And then when we get one, we wind up wishing we were playing somewhere. It’s kind of a family affair for us, because our girlfriends and families are there with us. We just love being together, and we have a lot of fun while we play and set up. We just love to be around people.” With thousand of people seeing their shows, the band has had a lot of opportunity to meet and greet the crowds over the last nine years. They consider their audience not fans, but rather friends. “We’re not above anybody,” Turner said. “People respect humility, and we’re all very approachable, anybody could come up and talk to us. Anybody can plug into an amp and play for a couple of hours, pick up a check and be gone. That’s not us, we’re not above anybody. It’s very gratifying, you meet people all the time that pat you on the back because you can play a tune and remind them of their childhood. I always tell them, it’s the people who make it fun. The ones who come out and pay the cover to hear us, they make it worth it.” In addition to being a steady draw on weekends, the band is also critically acclaimed. TEAZUR is a finalist for ETX Music’s “Rock Band of the Year,” and guitarist Rio Wallace is up for “Best Male Guitarist.” By design, TEAZUR takes great pride in not being your ordinary bar band. Guitarist Wallace and bassist Clint McMullen both have degrees in music, and between them, Reiner and Turner have been practicing musicians for more than seventy years. You won’t hear “Mustang Sally” at one of their shows, or any of the other garage band staples that listeners have been tired of for decades. “To be able to do what we do, we have to know who we’re playing for and what they want,” Turner said. “We’ve always taken it on ourselves that we don’t play the ‘standard’ songs that you hear from every other gigging band. We try and give the people something that they’re not going to see around the block, something they’re not going to see anywhere else.” “We didn’t want to play music that you could hear any night of the week in any bar,” Reiner said. “We went back to the bands we grew up listening to, Kansas, Styx, Rush, Journey, bands like that. We
want our fans to say, ‘Oh my God, these are the songs we grew up with. I’m reliving my musical fantasy!’” With that many gigs, the band takes every opportunity to change up their set list and keep things fresh. “We’ll learn new songs pretty much every week, and change up the set,” Reiner said. “Everybody was asking for ‘Uptown Funk,’ for example, so we added it,” he laughs. “We’ll throw in a disco medley, add some Rush, Bryan Adams, Rick Springfield, Guns and Roses…we’ll just try new stuff all the time.” “Everybody in this band is polished, and we try and play stuff like it was written and have fun. Our biggest thing is vocal ability. Everybody in the band sings, so we do three and four part harmonies. I truly think that’s what sets us apart. There’s not a lot of bands doing the things we do.” A typical TEAZUR show starts with the band performing the national anthem around nine, followed by music straight through until closing time with one short break in the middle, and Turner thanking the crowd for choosing the band for their weekend entertainment. “I hope they feel like they’ve spent their money well,” Turner said. “We grew up KISS fans and that was their motto, a good show for the money. That’s why we have a light show and music that everybody can get into.” “I want people to say, ‘Wow, that was awesome,’ Reiner said. “That’s the key to people coming back to see us, everybody has fun. When we get comments on our Facebook page, they tell us they had fun, and that really makes it even better for us. We want everybody to get their money’s worth when they come see the band.” With the band members all road-tested veterans in their forties, they say that experience gives them a new perspective on still being working musicians, and playing almost every weekend.
L I VE
“I just love playing music,” Reiner said. “I love the camaraderie with the guys. I’ve played in bands since high school, but this is the first time I’ve played this much. You can’t get a better high than going out in front of people and playing.” “It’s a dream,” Turner said. “Everybody dreams growing up, whether you’re in a band or playing football or whatever, that’s the goal. To make the pros. When I got back into this, I told myself if it ever starts to feel like a job, I’m out. “We could play at our leisure in our garage or living room, but when you’re playing to a crowd of smiling faces every Saturday night, and people come up and say they enjoyed you…that’s not just a blessing, it’s a responsibility.” You can get more of TEAZUR at www.teazur.com and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TEAZUR. Upcoming shows are: July 4th – Barefoot Bay Marina, Pittsburg, 9pm July 11th – Fat Jack’s, Texarkana, 9pm July 18th – XLN, Tyler, 9pm July 25th – Dick’s Bar & Grill, Mt. TMA Builds Up to ® The Art of the Brick: ®
Inside the Artist’s Studio:
One-of-a-kind LEGO Art Exhibition by Nathan Sawaya Opens
Adam C. Douglas
The storied toy building of countless childhood creations take form as fine art with the unique vision of Nathan Sawaya in “The Art of the Brick,” the next major exhibition coming to the Tyler Museum of Art. The show opens to the public Friday, July 10th and continues through September 13th at the Museum, 1300 S. Mahon Ave. on the Tyler Junior College main campus. “The Art of the Brick®” features more than 20 large-scale sculptures crafted only from LEGO® bricks by Sawaya. Like most young kids, Sawaya started playing with LEGOs at a young age. But unlike most kids, Sawaya never stopped building, creating and exploring his own imagination. The awardwinning artist has catapulted the iconic LEGO brick into an art medium all its own, transforming this construction toy into aweinspiring and thought-provoking sculptures. The global touring exhibition that emerged from Sawaya’s unique perspective is the first of its kind to focus exclusively on LEGO bricks as an art medium, and has broken attendance records around the world. “I use LEGO bricks as my medium because I enjoy seeing people’s reactions to artwork created from something with which they are familiar. Everyone can relate to it since it is a toy that many children have at home,” Sawaya said. “I want to elevate this simple plaything to a place that it has never been before. I also appreciate the cleanliness of the medium. The right angles. The distinct lines. As so often in life, it is a matter of perspective. Up close, the shape of the brick is distinctive. But from a distance, those right angles and distinct lines change to curves.”
Disappear Here By Derrick White “Disappear here,” is a line from a Bret Easton Ellis book “Less Than Zero.” For some unknown reason, when I think of regional artist and photographer Adam Douglas, I am reminded of “Less Than Zero” (the book not the movie). Maybe it’s because I first read it when I was 18, maybe it’s the book’s youthful, moody disillusionment, or maybe it’s just the Ray-Ban sunglasses. Ellis’ novels can be dark, to put it mildly. Sometimes I’ve been afraid to turn the page, but there is often a fierce, honest defenselessness revealed in his work as well. Twenty-five-year-old Adam Douglas describes himself as, “a trans/pansexual, freelance photographer, professional artist, mental health advocate, writer, technical guru, and an old people chauffeur.” I remember Adam as an art student at Tyler Junior College 2009-2010 as an intelligent, reserved, talented, well-liked, and dedicated student. Adam was active and outwardly relaxed in the art department and then suddenly he seemingly disappeared. “I don’t want to care. If I care about things, it’ll just be worse; it’ll just be another thing to worry about. It’s less painful if I don’t care.” - Bret Easton Ellis, “Less Than Zero” Although Adam has become somewhat reclusive and has been dealing with some personal mental health issues, he has maintained a prolific output of both photography and drawings over the years. When asked what he has been doing artistically, he states, “Lately, I’ve been working on a woodcut (relief printmaking), and experimenting with that process. This year has been riddled with different experiments though, and lots of them have been drawings, illustrations or writing.” I personally believe in the healing power of the arts. It’s not only one of the reason why I make it, but also one of the reasons why I teach it. Some artists cope with their personal challenges through the therapeutic creation of art. The web site: Healing Through The Arts (www. htta.org) states, “The processes of creating art, as well as the finished piece, help make sense of people’s physical, mental or emotional needs. Healing is also possible for those who experience the art through observation and contemplation of the message. It shows us that we are not alone in our challenges.” Examples from the Healing Through The Arts website include: Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) is one of the most famous artists who struggled with mental issues. His bouts of instability did not prevent him from creating in his highly expressive artistic language. Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), impressionist painter, suffered from severe rheumatoid arthritis during the final decades of his life. He became unable to hold a paintbrush but using art as a coping mechanism, he had a paint brush tied to his wrist. Henry Matisse (1869-1954) was one of the greatest painters of the twentieth century, but in the last years of his life he created a new style of art in paper cutouts because scissors had become an easier tool. Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) suffered from childhood polio and also a traffic accident that left her in constant lifelong pain. Her famous series of self-portraits enabled her to objectify her physical sufferings, as well as the emotional turmoil resulting from her turbulent marriage to painter Diego Rivera. Keith Haring (1958-1990) had already achieved success with his personal caricatures before he was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988. He 18 • EGuideMagazine.com

continued to use his art to raise awareness of AIDS and other social issues. In an interview in 1988, he said, “Part of the reason I am not having trouble facing the reality of death is that it’s not a limitation, in any way. It could have happened at any time, and it is going to happen sometime. If you live your life according to that, death is irrelevant. Everything I am doing right now is exactly what I want to do.” These themes of pain and suffering as well as resilience resonate in the work and inspiration of Adam Douglas’ artwork. I asked what inspired him to become an artist and he said, “I was a lonely, isolated, bullied, quiet, shy teenager fresh into puberty, and I had no friends. Art was there. Art has a way of doing that, being there. Art gives us a human connection of experiencing something familiar even when it’s created by a stranger or someone centuries ago or a half a world away. It still has the ability to make one think and understand the sensation, the experience, the emotion.” Adam talked about what importance art has brought to his life and he says, “Partial sanity. Drawing and writing and taking pictures and doing all of these things that I do help me through my mental issues and my problems at each particular moment in time.” Douglas also shares that the frustrating part of being an artist is “The feeling of being hidden and ignored. But that is also a good thing too because then I can do exactly what I want to do. I can work on whatever ideas I have and I’ll think that it’s the best thing in the world and then I realize I’m just a miniscule speck on the surface of this planet.” Adam is much more than an infinitesimal speck. His artwork is very powerful and reflects a compulsive dedication in the quality of his gestural line work and his talent of capturing naturalism. One can appreciate the amount of time some of his line drawings must take, as well as identify with the forms and strong, powerful possibilities in interpretations. Adam has amazing compositional skills in the way he photographs his subjects. Adam Douglas is creating quality artwork right here in East Texas that is personal and quotidian to his own life and struggles, but powerful and capable of being a reflection of our lives and struggles. To quote a conversation between two of the characters in the “Less Than Zero” novel, “But this road doesn’t go anywhere,” I told him. “That doesn’t matter.” “What does?” I asked, after a little while. “Just that we’re on it, dude,” he said.” Adam’s art is influenced by researching German woodcuts, René Magritte (surrealist painter), Egon Schiele (Austrian, elongated figurative painter) and Stanley Donwood (pen name of English artist and writer Dan Rickwood known for his close association with the British rock band Radiohead). To discover and see more of Adam’s work visit: www.adamdouglasarts.tumblr.com.
TMA members and special guests are invited for a first look at the exhibition during the Preview Reception from 5:30-7pm Thursday, July 9th at the Museum. For information on becoming a TMA member, call (903)595-1001 or visit www.tylermuseum.org. “The inspiration for hosting this exhibition came from Mary John Spence, one of the most giving and compassionate patrons of the arts Tyler has ever seen,” TMA Executive Director Chris Leahy said. “Mary John was an original Trustee of the Museum when we started in 1971, and her primary focus always has been what is central to our vision: improving the lives of the children in our community. With that in mind, she generously is partnering with us as Presenting Sponsor for ‘The Art of the Brick.’” Additional support for the exhibition in honor of Mrs. Ralph Spence is provided by Dr. Paul Arnold, Eleanor Cameron, Betsy and Elmer Ellis, Virginia Hawkins Gatewood, Louise and Guy Griffeth, Verna and George Hall, Historic Tyler, Inc., Martha and Randy Key, Mrs. Barbara Shtofman, Tancy and Ralph Spence, Betty and Dick Summers, Judy and Charles Tate, Punkin and Cotton Turner, Sherilyn and Patrick Willis, and Bitsy Wynne. Exhibition admission is free for TMA members, $5 for adults and $3 for seniors. Students, children under 12, TJC faculty and staff, and City of Tyler employees are admitted free. Regular Museum hours are 10am-5pm Tuesday-Saturday and 1-5pm Sunday. The TMA is closed on Mondays and most major holidays.

Into The Woods, JR. - The Brothers Grimm “Go Broadway” as Sondheim and Lapine offer up a cockeyed fairy tale in “Into The Woods JR.,” an adaptation of one of Sondheim’s most popular works designed especially for young performers. All of your favorite characters − Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk), and the Witch − meet and interact in this whimsical original story. The musical centers on a baker and his wife who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the king’s festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse and wind up changed forever. With unforgettable roles, little dancing, and no chorus, “Into The Woods JR.” showcases a medium-sized ensemble of talented singers and actors. The sophisticated score has been adapted to make it easier, though still challenging, for young performers. “Into The Woods JR.” is a funny and engaging way to get young people to think about the stories with which they’ve grown up and the ethical issues raised therein. Performances are July 4th (7:30pm) and 5th (2:30pm). Tyler Civic Theatre is located at 400 Rose Park Dr., Tyler, tylercivictheatre. com. Tickets are available online and at the door. “Red, White & Tuna” at Tyler Civic Theatre - The much anticipated third installment in the Tuna trilogy takes the audience through another satirical ride into the hearts and minds of the polyester-clad citizens of Texas’ third smallest town. Along with Tuna’s perennial favorites, some new Tuna denizens burst into the 4th of July Tuna High School Class Reunion. This sets the stage for a show full of fireworks and fun from the land where the Lion’s Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies. It’s been several years since we left Bertha and Arles dancing at the end of “A Tuna Christmas.” Did the romance blossom? Has Didi Snavley received any “cosmic” communications from R.R.’s UFO? Did Stanley make his fortune in the Albuquerque taxidermy business? These and other burning questions will be asked and answered in the side-splitting spoof of life in rural America. The “The Washing Post” says, “At first glance, it appears there are only two men in the room, one slim and ferretlike, the other a big round fellow with a sweet, pillowy face. But sit down for a chat with Jaston Williams and Joe Sears -- the creators and stars of the hilarious, home-fried theatrical trilogy ‘Greater Tuna,’ ‘A Tuna Christmas’ and the current ‘Red, White & Tuna,’ and before too long a host of others have horned in on the conversation. They all hail from the fictional burg of Tuna, the third smallest town in Texas. One’s more

Pump Boys and Dinettes - The Lindale Community Theater is proud to present “The Pump Boys and Dinettes!” “The New York Times” says it is, “Both musically and theatrically, a triumph of ensemble playing. It doesn’t merely celebrate the value of friendship and life’s simple pleasures, it embodies them.” The Pump Boys sell high octane on Highway 69 in Grand Ole Opry country and the Dinettes, Prudie and Rhetta Cupp, run the Double Cupp diner next door. Together they fashion an evening of country western songs that received unanimous raves on and off Broadway. With heartbreak and hilarity, they perform on guitars, piano, bass and, yes, kitchen utensils. Show dates are July 10th-12th, and 17th-19th. Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm. Sunday matinees at 2pm. Doors open 45 minutes prior to the show. Tickets may be purchased online or at the door. Please visit online at www.lindalecommunitytheater.org for more information. The Buddy Holly Story tells the true story of Buddy’s meteoric rise to fame, from the moment in 1957 when “That’ll Be the Day” hit the airwaves until his tragic death less than two years later on “The Day the Music Died.” The show features over 20 of Buddy Holly’s greatest hits, including “That’ll Be the Day,” “Peggy Sue,” “Everyday,” “Oh Boy,” “Not Fade Away,” “Rave On,” and “Raining in My Heart,” plus Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba” and the Big Bopper’s “Chantilly Lace.” The incredible legacy of the young man with glasses, whose musical career spanned an all-too-brief period during the golden days of rock and roll, continues to live on in “Buddy.” Seen by over 22 million people around the world, “Buddy” will have you on your feet and “send you out of the theater on an unstoppable high,” says “The Boston Globe.” Productions are July 23rd-26th and July 30th-August 2nd. Family Silverleaf’s Waterpark at The Villages: A Splish-Splashing Good Time Year Round By Kelly Griffith-Fields At Silverleaf’s Waterpark at The Villages shrieks of excitement can be heard from the parking lot. Large slides jet out from the building are just a glimpse of the fun it holds inside. Splashing, floating, aquatic fun and relaxation is all housed in the large glass structure, centrally located here in East Texas. “We are the only indoor waterpark in the area,” Assistant General Manager Ashley McCoy said. “That allows us to be open year-round.” In the winter the water is heated. In the summer the water temperature relies on the bright sunshine and Texas heat. Since all the parks features are indoors, rain or other harsh elements can’t stop the fun. In fair weather the retractable roof opens up to allow in fresh air. Though the Villages Resort is for members only, the Waterpark at the Villages is open to the public. Area mom Beth Gillispie has visited the park over a dozen times and believes it has something for everyone. “It’s a fun, family activity,” Gillispie said. “My whole family enjoys it.” Gillispie’s 9-year-old daughter Mia, and 3-year-old son Jayden, both have their favorite slides chosen throughout the park. Inside the Waterpark there are four, three-story, water slides and three, kid-size, body slides. All features have minimum height requirements, which are posted near each ride entrance. Also, “the lazy river may be the favorite attraction of all,” McCoy said. “It’s good for everyone of all ages plus it’s very relaxing.” The park provides tubes for free for guests to float on the continuous river. In addition to the lazy river and multiple slides, the park features a gentle wave pool that reaches up to four-feet in depth. While outside floatation devices are not allowed, life jackets are available throughout the park for visitors to use.
