Music Stefan Cotter:

A Little Out Of The Ordinary By Johnny Griffith It’s the weekend. You want to get out of your home and enjoy some time out. Maybe some dinner, and afterwards a bit of live music at one of the venues around town but you want something a little different than the usual. Not that the usual isn’t good, but you’re just marching to the beat of a different drum today and want a soundtrack to accompany your mood. If that is the case, then you need to find where Stefan Cotter is playing and make your way to one of his shows. Originally a product of Morgantown, West Virginia, the unique singer/songwriter eventually found his way to East Texas with his wife about 8 years ago and has been doing things a little differently ever since. With the ability to be comfortable playing multiple and disparate genres, Cotter has contributed to many local groups and continues to entertain audiences all over the region with his eclectic brand of musicianship that is definitely not the ordinary. We tracked Stefan down to get a better perspective on what he’s doing and how he’s doing it: Johnny: What were your earliest musical memories and what got you interested in being a musician initially? Stefan: My dad is a trumpet player/teacher, who is finally retiring this year, and I remember him writing out “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and teaching me how to read music on the trumpet. As I recall, that was about 4th grade. He also did a lot of musical theater gigs in the summer when I was little and I used to go sit in the orchestra pit with all of the musicians and I thought it was awesome fun. Those people were great musicians, some of whom I still know to this day. I also got to experience him as my high school band director, which made for a lot of great fun! One memory that sticks out was probably around second grade when he

let me march with the high school marching band and play cymbals in the small town we lived in during that time. Johnny: Your bio on ReverbNation cites your genre as reggae, rockabilly, bluegrass, and rock. That’s an unique mix, especially in this neck of the woods. What are some of your staple cover tunes that really highlight a Stefan Cotter show? Stefan: I have a lot of “favorite” cover songs but some that have stuck with me are: “Don’t Let Me Down” by the Beatles, “Valerie” by The Zutons, “Could You Be Loved and Waiting in Vain” by Bob Marley, plenty of 50’s country and rock ‘n roll, Chuck Berry’s “Roll over Beethoven,” and lots of old traditional bluegrass as well. Coming from West Virginia, bluegrass and old time music is everywhere. Johnny: What drew you to those styles of music as your genres of choice? Stefan: I have no logical explanation, but I assume the excitement. If the music is good, I get excited and my feet start stompin’. You know it when you hear it. That goes for reggae, jazz... anything. Also, I think punk rock/ska was my first love I reckon and there is something very punk rock about Chuck Berry, early Beatles, and early rockabilly. There’s just tons of energy. To add to that, the guy that taught me how to run a real sound system, Paul Vallett, also introduced me to REAL roots reggae, “Rock Steady,” and reggae dub. There is nothing better than testing a full on sound system when there is nobody there and just pounding that low and slow reggae. So that’s where the reggae came in I suppose. Johnny: Who would you say your biggest musical influences were when you were discovering your “sound?” Stefan: It’s constantly evolving, and that includes my sound too I guess. Sublime was my favorite band for a long time in Junior High and High School. Reel Big Fish was what band I wanted to be in. I was in Jazz band and the orchestra in high school so that brought in a lot of new music. Then I got into jazz/classical music in college. I was obviously exposed to a ton of different ideas and I loved it. Again, the reggae sound system, then I found Django Reinhardt, who is my all time favorite guitarist. Bob Wills and

John Prine and suddenly I get lost again on an entirely different rabbit hole. I’m also constantly influenced by the bands that I’ve played with, both as a college credit or rock bands that I played around with in Morgantown, most notably The Greens. You should check them out, those guys absolutely rock! Johnny: Are you primarily a solo act or do you work with a stage band? Stefan: Actually, I try not to play solo any more. Its too much fun to play with other people. We’ve got Big Funky Cloud (BFC) at Stanley’s every Wednesday with Keith (“Grease”) Jones on bass, Nick Pencis on drums, Gary Freeman on keys, and myself. Then we’ve got a string band that we call The Thing Band for lack of a better name. It is with Gary Freeman (keys), Jake Ham (drums) and myself playing as a trio sometimes, and we throw in Jopi Drew (bass) for good measure when we can. Jake Ham and Jopi Drew and I have been playing music for the past 8 years or more and love it. Johnny: About how many shows a month are you currently playing? Stefan: I play about four shows a week. I play with BFC every Wednesday at Stanley’s BBQ, and every Saturday with my old time/bluegrass band at The Grove, and other gigs thrown in there depending on the week. Johnny: How many originals do you usually try to work into an average set? Stefan: I try to work in about 10-12 but it just depends on the crowd and the night. Sometimes people are in the mood to dance to songs they know, but every now and then you can play some

originals and the crowd will respond. Those are the nights you know it’ll be a fun time. Johnny: Are you primarily playing in this area or are you traveling to other markets to play gigs? Stefan: I’m currently just sticking around town. I’d like to get into Dallas but you’ve got to have some momentum to make money there, and right now I’m trying to build that locally to be able to parlay that into some attention in the Dallas scene. Johnny: How would you describe a typical set for a new listener? Stefan: I call it “Rastabilly”which is lots of fun party-type reggae and old fashioned rockabilly/ country/bluegrass all mixed with gypsy jazz. Be ready to dance! It’s a fun style. Johnny: What’s on your radar for the rest of the year and beyond? Stefan: Right now, just keeping busy playing shows mainly. Also, I am playing a lot on my fellow bandmates records and hopefully I will be able to compile an album myself. Be sure to check out Stefan Cotter online at facebook.com/stefancottermusic or stefancotter.com.

Southern Raised, Southern Strong:

Easton Corbin to Headline The 2018 American Cancer Society’s

Tyler Cattle Barons’ Gala will be held June 16th at Texas Rose Horse Park, 14078 TX-110, Tyler. Come out and two-step the night away at the “Southern Raised, Southern Strong” Gala that promises to be the highlight of summer! Easton Corbin is 2018 Cattle Barons’ Gala headliner. With two No. 1 singles, multiple awards, and nominations, plus performances on some of the biggest stages in the world, Mercury Nashville’s Easton Corbin has made a lasting impression on the country music landscape and is lauded for his traditional country sound, authentic lyrics, and mastery of understatement. American Songwriter says, “Easton Corbin has one of those rare, glorious voices that was just made for singing country music.” Guest performers will be BlackHawk. For more than 20 years, BlackHawk has shared a unique sense of harmony with their voices, their songs, and their fans. It’s a harmony that has sold over 7 million albums, scored some of the most distinctive country radio hits of the 1990’s, and still draws tens of thousands of fans to their electrifying live performances. Today BlackHawk continues to honor its past as it forges its future, and does it all with a commitment that takes their music – and the harmony – to a whole new level. Also, there will be a guest performance by the Tyler Dudley Band. There will be lots of food, drinks, silent auctions, vendors, and tons of fun. Tickets for $100 will be available for a drawing to win a 2018 Z71 Cattle Barons’ Edition Crew Cab truck. This beautiful truck was donated by Hall Buick GMC. Tickets can be purchased at the American Cancer Society office, all Texas National Bank locations, Cozad Insurance Group, Susan Robinson Fine Jewelry, Citizens National Bank, and Hall Buick GMC. The drawing will be held at this year’s Cattle Barons’ Gala. The winner does not need to be present to win. “Signs of Hope” has been a Cattle Barons’ tradition for years. It’s an expression of support from local businesses and individuals. This is a special way to honor a loved one by sponsoring a sign that will be uniquely displayed at the entrance of the Texas Rose Horse Park/Brunson Equestrian Center upon entering the 2018 Tyler Cattle Barons’ Gala. Sponsors will have their names or company’s name individually produced on these prominent signs. Cancer does not discriminate. For more than a 100 years, The American Cancer Society (ACS) has been leading the fight to end cancer. With your support, the American Cancer Society has helped usher in an era where more people survive cancer than ever before. By translating research findings into action, ACS has seen a 20% decline in US cancer death rates since the early 1990’s. Tickets for the event are $200 per person for general admission and $300 for Barons admission and can be purchased at tylercattlebaronsgala.org. For more information about the Tyler Cattle Barons’ Gala, volunteering at the event, becoming a sponsor, or donation of auction items, contact Cindy Brady at (903)597-1383 or cindy.brady@cancer.org.

Chris Oliver & Company: Making The Connection By Johnny Griffith If you’ve been to The Grove in Tyler recently on a Sunday morning for brunch, chances are you’ve been listening to the solid grooves of Chris Oliver & Company whether you realized it or not. Originally born in Tyler, Chris attended both Robert E Lee and John Tyler high schools before finishing at North Garland High School in 1995. Eventually moving back to Tyler, Oliver has been a mainstay in the music scene for several years. An accomplished drummer, Chris now fronts the eponymous Chris Oliver & Company and their mission is to make sure you walk away from a show with a smile on your face and the beat in your heart. We talked with Chris recently to get more info on what they’ve got going: Johnny: Who makes up the “& Company” portion of Chris Oliver & Company? Chris: Chris Oliver & Company is myself, Josh Brock, Calvin Sheffield, and Dr. George Faber. That’s been the lineup since we started. Johnny: How did you guys all meet? Chris: I grew up with Calvin pretty much all my life and he’s been one of my best friends. We’ve played in church as well as playing in several other bands around the area including being the rhythm section for Wesley Pruitt. Dr. Faber has pretty much been a mentor to both of us since we were both young and has been playing forever. I met Josh Brock about 4 years ago and he was one of those guys that came in and fit like he’d been with us for years. Johnny: How did Chris Oliver & Company form? Chris: About 2 years ago, from another gig I was doing, I was asked to do a Sunday brunch show over at The Grove. I had to put together a band specifically for that and, you know, it’s not easy getting a bunch of musicians to do a midmorning gig on Sunday after playing out till 2am the night before. That first bunch I put together is

still Chris Oliver & Company today. Johnny: You guys play a superb mix of songs... what genre would you consider your wheelhouse? Chris: That’s a hard question. Everything has a season and I can look back and see where my musical life has been a steady progression with different styles and preferences each taking their turn. If I had to pick one singular style, I’d have to say blues-ish, but it’s really not that simple. Johnny: You guys were invited to play down in Austin at the Heart of Texas Blues Challenge last year. How was that experience and what do you feel you learned as a band? Chris: Yeah, we got the invite down there so Josh, myself, and another bass player went down due to Calvin not being able to make it, and we auditioned. They were impressed enough that we were invited to actually participate. We went back down in August and won the preliminary round which got us to the finals. While we were eventually beat out, it was a great experience. The finals were at Antone’s in Austin which has had some legendary players on stage over the years. That atmosphere, on that stage, you could feel the vibe and the history and we grew a lot from that. Johnny: How far are you traveling to play shows at this point? Chris: Right now we’re staying local until our album is finished. We will be getting ready to do a tour after that, which will take us out of state but until then it’s home. Johnny: About how many shows are you playing a month these days? Chris: We’re mainly hitting about four shows a month, really focusing on the album, and playing the standing brunch gig at The Grove. Johnny: How have local crowds reacted to a band that doesn’t really fit the mold for this region? Chris: Every time we hit the stage, I don’t care where it is, if they call us to play and you see this band and our show, I want you to have an experience. If you’re down, we’re going to hit a point in the set where we’re going to lift you up. But we’re not really there playing for the masses...we’re there for that individual and when you connect with lots of people on an individual level, something special happens. Johnny: Are you working originals into your

set list or is it primarily cover tunes? Chris: It really depends on how we’re feeling that day. Some people who have heard our originals will ask for them but it really depends on the vibe. Sometimes we will throw some out and see what kind of reaction we get. Johnny: How would you describe a typical Chris Oliver & Company show? Chris: We try to get your attention, make you listen, make you have fun...we might take you to church, it just depends, but we always end with thank you and an appreciation for the audience. Johnny: Any big plans on the horizon for the rest of the year? Chris: Our main priority right now is finishing the album and putting together a tour to get the word out. Johnny: So after two years of Chris Oliver & Company, what would you say has been your most memorable gig to this point? Chris: That Antone’s gig for the Blues Challenge was easily most memorable. Everyone brought their “A” game and was on point. Again, that combined with the history of that place and the players that have graced that stage...it was unforgettable. Johnny: Who would you say you’re listening to right now that gets you excited? Chris: I’d say right now I’ve been listening to a lot of Donnie Hathaway vocally, but I’m just a fan of music in general. You can catch Chris Oliver & Company at facebook.com/chrisoliverandcompany. You can also catch Chris Oliver & Company most Sundays during brunch at The Grove in Tyler.

Her adventures become increasingly more strange as she races the Dodo Bird, gets tied up with Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, raps with a bubble-blowing Caterpillar, and beats the Queen of Hearts at her own game. Tyler Civic Theatre is located at 400 Rose Park Dr., Tyler, next to the Tyler Rose Garden Center. For more info call (903)592-0561 or go to tylercivictheatre.com. July 4th (4pm) - “Annual Independence Day Concert” will be presented by Tyler Civic Chorale at First Presbyterian Church, 230 W. Rusk St., Tyler. For more info go to tylercivicchorale.org or facebook.com/tylercivicchorale. Tickets are available through TCC members and at the door. July 13th-15th, 20th-22nd (Nightly at 7:30pm, Sunday at 2:30) - “Charlotte’s Web” will be on stage at Henderson Civic Theater. All the enchanting characters from the book are here: Wilbur, the irresistible young pig who desperately wants to avoid the butcher; Fern, a girl who understands what animals say to each other; Templeton, the gluttonous rat who can occasionally be talked into a good deed; the Zuckerman family; the Arables; and, most of all, the extraordinary spider, Charlotte, who proves to be “a true friend and a good writer.” Henderson Civic Theater is located at 122 E. Main, Henderson. For more info call (903)6572968 or go to hendersoncivictheatre.org. July 19th-28th (Friday-Saturday at 7:30pm,

Sunday at 2pm) - “James and The Giant Peach” will be on stage at Henderson County Performance Center. When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down an old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion that results in a tremendous peach. This launches a journey across the ocean with his insect friends. Quick wit and creative thinking make the voyage a success. Presented by the Y.E.S. Company (Youth Excellence on Stage), this show promises to be quite a “Masterpeach.” Henderson County Performance Center is located at 400 Gibson Rd., Athens. For more info call (903)675-3908 or go to hcpac.org. July 26th-August 12th (Friday-Saturday at 7:30pm, Sunday at 2:30pm) - “Singing in the Rain - The “Greatest Movie Musical of All Time” is faithfully and lovingly adapted by Broadway legends Betty Comden and Adolph Green from their original award-winning screenplay in “Singin’ in the Rain.” Each unforgettable scene and song and dance is accounted for, including the showstopping title number, complete with an onstage rainstorm! Hilarious situations, snappy dialogue, and a hit-parade score of Hollywood standards make “Singin’ in the Rain” the perfect entertainment for any fan of the golden age of movie musicals. “Singin’ in the Rain” has all the makings of a Tinseltown tabloid headline – the starlet, the leading man and a love affair that could change lives and make or break careers. In silent movies, Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are a hot item but behind the scenes, things aren’t always as they appear on the big screen. Meanwhile, Lina’s squeaky voice might be the end of her career in “talking pictures” without the help of a talented young actress to do the talking and singing for her. Filled with every memorable moment from the film and a downpour of unforgettable songs, “Singin’ in the Rain” is a guaranteed hit. Tyler Civic Theatre is located at 400 Rose Park Dr., Tyler, next to the Tyler Rose Garden Center. For more info call (903)592-0561 or go to tylercivictheatre.com.

Art

Inside the Artist’s Studio:

On View this Summer

Contemporary Artists on View in East Texas By Derrick White It is June in Texas and it’s hot. If you are looking for a free, fun activity which will be stimulating to the senses and inside an air conditioned building, check out some of these venues around town showcasing some wonderful visual art. Gallery Main Street located in downtown Tyler, 110 W. Erwin ST, Tyler, TX 75702, is displaying local talent Jacqueline Chubirka in a one person exhibition of 27 paintings by the artist. Chubirka: A Study of People and their Things is on view until June 4, 2018, so hurry. The paintings are realistic and masterfully executed reminiscent of Wayne Thiebaud (American painter known for depicting common objects—pies, ice cream, pastries, and figures). Chubirka lives in Tyler and received her B.F.A. degree in painting from the Academy of Art University. “This group of paintings consists of portraits juxtaposed to everyday objects. Taking daily life as subject matter while commenting on the aesthetic of the working class,” says the artist in a printed statement. You will be impressed. The Tyler Museum of Art is exhibiting Rewind: Selections from Private Collections through August 19th containing artwork borrowed from East Texas collectors. Coming up June 24th – September 9th is a solo show by renowned Texas contemporary

Dallas artist, David Bates. The museum is located on the campus of TJC at 1300 S. Mahon Ave, Tyler, TX 75701 and is open Tuesday – Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Sunday: 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. The museum will also host Creativity Camps this summer Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. for children ages 6 – 12 ($40 per day / $175 per week). Camps kick off with TMA World Tour June 25th – 29th incorporating visual art with music and performance. Young artists will explore art, make a musical instrument, learn a song, and perform a mini-concert at the end of the week. Other camps continue through the month of July. Contact: 903-595-1001 for registration and information. On view in the Meadows Gallery at the University of Texas at Tyler’s Cowan Center (located at 3900 University Blvd, Tyler, TX 75701) is the 2018 Juried Student Exhibition. The show is on display through August 10th and is free and open to the public Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. This year’s juror for the show is the distinguished Texas sculptor Sherry Owens who uses crepe myrtle branches to tell stories of Texas and environmental concerns. Owens works in Dallas and received a B.F.A. from Southern Methodist University. Her selections are impressive, engaging, and mostly reflective of the juror’s natural comprehension for organic forms. 42 pieces were chosen to be exhibited. The professional skill level, appeal, and powerful content coming from these emerging Texas contemporary artists is remarkable and speaks volumes about the momentum of the East Texas art scene. We have powerful artistic voices here. Brittany Lea Taylor has two small, powerful paintings in the show Memory #4 and Memory #1 (both oil on panel). The former is a striking, black and white, representational, almost photo-realistic image of an old, abandoned vehicle buried in weeds. The composition is fragmented and energized by a few (some green) diagonal, sharp lines. The latter is a black and white, photo-realistic rural scene with a slight contoured outline of an undeveloped figure like a missing character from a Harper Lee novel. Jessica Sanders also has two works shown. Roll, activities, young artists will make musical instruments, learn a song, and play a mini-concert at the end of the week. Upside-down and Backward - July 9th-13th

Everything looks different from a fresh perspective. Drawing underwater, painting with spaghetti, there’s no telling what will happen when you change the way you make art. This camp is all about real creativity, and young artists will help brainstorm up new, exciting projects all week long.

Summer Creative Camps The Tyler Museum of Art (TMA) is located at

1300 S. Mahon Ave. on the Tyler Junior College main campus. Regular TMA hours are 10am-5pm Tuesday-Saturday, and 1-5pm Sunday. The Museum is closed Mondays and most major holidays. The Museum is supported by its members, Tyler Junior College, and the City of Tyler. For more info call the museum at (903)5951001, tylermuseum.org, or email info@tylermuseum.org.

Stack, Overlap and Stuff, Pull, Lay. The pieces are made of porcelain and stoneware and sewn together using copper wire. These exquisite sculptures are painstakingly assembled small, handcrafted, fired and glazed, geometrically shaped tiles. Her creations are hung on the wall and seem graceful, soft, and natural. The individual pieces transcend their uniqueness and become a complete form. I was fascinated by Leon Campbell’s print titled Circle Quadrant Intaglio a commanding minimalist composition of four divisions of a square each containing a circle shape with a large, center circle overlapping all. The image unified by frantic and expressive lines, cross-hatching and etched into the plate. Jennie Riley exhibits a nice painting titled Them, a large-scale acrylic on canvas of strange puzzle shapes creating a surreal landscape of mammoth proportions with a colorful bundle of confusion in the bottom right of the picture plane. Kate Finch’s Inconsistencies in SelfHatred is a stunning watercolor of biological, fluid, formal interactions. It is a pleasing and enjoyable compositional ride full of movement, lines, shapes, and colors through a strong, swirling current. Two of the showstoppers for me are the sculptures of Laminda Miller Kitsune’s Deceit and I can be who I want to be. Perfectly postured and proportioned animal forms created from Styrofoam and epoxy clay with papier-mâché, one is a wild, contorted, shapeshifting fox attached to the wall, a human mask around his neck. It is textural, dynamic, playful, and contemplative. The other is a freestanding sculpture of a large hare seated on a small wooden stool resting and removing his rabbit mask. It is visually tactile, fantastical, and immediately creates a Carrollesque narrative. These two pieces held my visual attention for a long time. Corey Reeves watercolor and ink paintings Feast of 90 Minutes and Sinister, Sentient Sausage and Succulent, Savory Snacks stood out for their vibrant, outlandish and

well executed configurations reminiscent of Zapp comics, Robert Crumb, and Robert Williams. There is something intriguing about a monstrous man and a giant hot dog about to gorge on mustard drenched mini-franks. Other stunning works included: Joanna Kathryn Gifford’s Breath large-scale installation of a tangled woven cube structure casting a web of shadows below a digital projection of a mouth in repetition veiled by deterioration, Nicole Marie’s Automeris Io a large painting of floral and organic complexities forming a dense thicket of shapes battling and bumping each other, Lorianne Hubbard’s always superb charcoal and graphite drawings, Lisa Horlander’s translucent, stained, and layered three-dimensional collages, Tiffany Gilliam’s mixed media coiled, entangled, and bundled fragments, Jeri Lynn Hubbard’s delightful exploration into paper sculpture, and Erick Rodriguez’s Still Waters, a graphite on paper drawing so immensely intricate and containing thousands of small delicate, toned lines, it truly has to be viewed in person to be accurately appreciated. Other impressive exhibiting artists include: Hannah Branscum, Chelsea Bretherick, Audrey Caton, Sam Edwards, Rebecca Fernandez with Jacqueline Yost, Keri Lane Fidone, Abigail Harrison, Kyndall Luckey, Harrison March, John Miranda, Sylvia Morse, Chelsea Oliver, Lauren Pitre, Kayla Reesor, Jamin Shepherd, Lilah Shepherd, Brandon Witschi and Jacqueline Yost.
