Food Stanley’s Famous Pit Bar-B-Q:
More Than Just Barbecue Written and Photographed By Barbara King Maybe it’s the lineup or the intoxicating smell or the live music, but there is no question that Stanley’s Famous Pit Bar-B-Q, a Tyler tradition for almost 60 years, is the best barbecue joint in town. Nick & Jen Pencis, Stanley’s owners since 2006, have a very thoughtful, well-laid out plan for the restaurant, and it is quite evident the Tuesday night that I visited as the place is packed. It’s Kid’s Night every Tuesday, and moms and dads are eating, playing, and just hanging with their families. Mom’s rock babies to the sounds of the live music on the outdoor patio, while adults enjoy a beverage or two, mixed with the most tantalizing barbecue in Tyler. “We are both really passionate about the whole experience,” explains Nick. “The smaller you are, the more heart and soul you have to put into it, and the instant joy we get watching people’s reaction as they take a bite and savor what we made that’s the most gratifying part of the whole thing.” The Pencis family has taken a long road to the perfection of the barbecue process, including travelling the State and eating at local barbecue places, and “having the honor and responsibility to be part of a great movement,” explained Nick. “We don’t cut corners, and we take the process seriously. We want each and every guest to be well taken care of, and to leave knowing that we have given it our best effort.” These efforts have paid off with tributes like being named, “One of the 50 best BBQ Joints in Texas” by “Texas Monthly,” spotlighted in Food & Wine Magazine’s “Best BBQ Cities” feature, a “Locals Love Us” winner the past three years, and voted “Best BBQ in Northeast Texas” by “Countyline Magazine” readers. “Your best recollection of great barbecue might be from your childhood when your grandpa took you up the street for a meal,” explains Nick. “We want to reconnect folks with great memories, great food and service, and make the whole adventure something you will talk about and share with your own family.” A behind the scenes tour of the actual “pit” where Pitmaster Jonathan Shaw is busy turning, inspecting, and testing, gives you an idea of why the food you get is so incredibly fresh and flavorful. The brisket may cook for up to 16 hours, and combined with the mouthwatering ribs, chicken, sausage, and pulled pork, there is literally something for every taste. As the oldest operating Mom & Pop BBQ joint in Tyler, their reputation is crucial to their longevity. Nick and Jen have taken the traditions of original owner, JD Stanley, and built upon long-standing recipes and methods, giving them an injection of spirit and flare all their own. “We learned along the way that you can have great food and service, but you also have to have an atmosphere that draws people in and makes them want to stay,” said Nick. And that’s exactly what they did in 2013, enlarging the outside patio area, adding a fully-stocked bar with great seating and room for a live band and dancing. The bar features eight Texas beers on tap, including selections from local True Vine Brewing Company. The Stanley’s bar boasts an extensive selection of American bourbon, rye, and whiskey, with over 70 different varieties available. Let’s talk about the reason folks are lined up out the door - the food! You can now stop by Stanley’s for breakfast, served from 7am to 10am, that includes tasty treats like breakfast bowls, sandwiches, and burritos. The Lunch and Dinner menu includes tongue-in-cheek named items like the Brother-in-Law, which is a grilled hot link, cheese,
chopped brisket and Stanley’s famous sauce; The Ex-Wife is a pulled pork and sliced brisket combination; the Big Swimmer is pan-seared tilapia on jalapeno cheese sourdough with cheddar, guacamole, organic greens, and tomato. A fan favorite is the Mother Clucker, a spiked and smoked chicken thigh filet with spicy bbq mayo, cheddar, topped with an over-easy fried egg and served on toasted jalapeno cheese sourdough. Stanley’s famous plates are your choice of brisket, sausage, pulled pork, baby back ribs, hot link, turkey breast, or chicken thigh filet. Vince and Elaine from Savannah, Georgia were travelling in their RV, stopped in Tyler to golf, and then headed over to Stanley’s. “We can’t get barbecue like this in Georgia,” said Elaine. “The taste is magnificent, so tender, and juicy, and the potato salad is the best I’ve ever had.” The double-rubbed baby back ribs have been coined “The Best Ribs in Texas,” and people come from all over to get some. Taffie Majdeski was relaxing on the patio, enjoying the music with colleagues from Florida, Michigan, and Texas, as they took a break from a project at one of the local hospitals. “I just sent my husband back home a picture of the ribs,” she said. “They are the best I’ve ever had, and we will definitely be back.” Add scrumptious sides like red-skinned potato salad, fresh coleslaw, and cowboy beans, and you will probably be taking some to go. Other menu selections include tacos, stuffed potatoes, frito pie, and vegetarian items. Kids are more than welcome at Stanley’s and can feast on grilled cheese, cheesy quesadilla, ham & cheese, or a chopped brisket or turkey sandwich. Kids eat free Tuesday nights and there are plenty of arts and crafts, games, and bubbles to keep them busy. Stanley’s can cater for your special event or gathering, too, with 48-hour advance notice. The restaurant will deliver, free of charge, within a five mile radius for groups of 20 or more. For groups of less than 20, place your order and they will pack it up and have it ready and waiting for you. Contact catering@stanleysfamous.com. Nick and Jen are dreaming large. They are in the process of
opening another restaurant, “Roast Social Kitchen,” a completely different and unique venture, on 5th Street across from TJC. “It will be a totally different concept, from brick ovens, to food that you can share,” said Nick. “We feel that Tyler needs to step up its options, and we hope that our new place can offer another dining alternative that brings fresh, good food to our guests.” Back to Stanley’s, Nick says he hopes that the tried and true tradition of good food can continue to grow and bring in new faces, “one rib at a time.” Stanley’s Famous Pit Bar-B-Q is located at 525 S. Beckham in Tyler, (903)593-0311. The catering hotline is (903)662-8093. Hours are breakfast Monday-Friday 7am-10am, lunch and dinner Monday-Saturday 11am-10pm, late night Friday 11am-12am. Bar hours are Monday-Thursday 3-10pm, Friday 11am-12am and Saturday 11am-10pm, closed Sunday. For more info go to www.stanleysfamous.com and www.facebook.com/stanleysfamous.

I hope folks take the opportunity to come out...we will definitely be back.” The first weekend in December, the drive-in will host an 11th annual Car Show, with over 800 cars and 3500 spectators. Featuring low rider trucks, the show brings in visitors from all over the state. In the summer months, you can see over 400 cars a night in the lot, but business slows down when kids are back in school. Mid-March things pick back up as new movies are released, with favorites being cartoon and animated features. “We like to keep it simple, affordable, and fun,” explained Robert. Everybody has a job, daughter Julie sells bug bands and takes care of the bounce house, while son Sam assists guests in the concession, eagerly opening doors for popcorn-laden visitors. “We are basically a kitchen in a big field with a big TV,” joked Robert. “The Rocky Horror Picture Show:”
Two Ways to Experience the Phenomenon
6 • EGuideMagazine.com
Downtown Tyler at Liberty Hall, the classic movie, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” will be shown two times this month. If you have never seen this classic movie, the “Virgin” Show on Friday, October 30th at 8pm is the showing that you will want to go to. In the “Rocky Horror” world, the word “Virgin” refers to the many unfortunate people who have never experienced “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” (RHPS) in a theater, with an audience, and a live cast. Seeing it on home video (Blu-ray, DVD, VHS, Netflix Instant, etc.) or on TV doesn’t count. First, the only thing you really need to bring your first time out in order to have fun is a sense of humor and money for admission. “Rocky Horror” is the first and only true audience participation movie. People yell back lines at the screen during the extended pauses between dialogue, dress up in costume, act out the film, and throw props at various times during the film. No one expects you to know much of anything your first time out. While audience participation is mandatory to keep the show alive, it is not mandatory that everyone participate. RHPS virgins are not expected to know a thing. A script will be provided for you to follow along, and to know what to do, when. Prop bags will be for sale at the door for $5 (outside props are not allowed). Tickets are $10 and VIP Box Seats are $80 (seats 4). A second show will be Saturday, October 31st at 11pm, with a bonus Live Floor Show performance. Tickets are $20 (includes prop bag) with VIP Box Seats $125 (seats 4). This is intended for mature audiences. This show will have swearing and sexual undertones during the movie and floor show. Thanks to Coby Archa, Liberty will have their own local floor show addition to this “cult classic.” Tickets are available at www.LibertyTyler.com. Liberty Hall is located in downtown Tyler at 103 E. Erwin.
Keep It Pink (Or “Save the Tatas!”) By Gini Rainey
Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women, with more than 200,000 women in the U.S. expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, according to the American Cancer Society. The good news is that many women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early. With that in mind, October has been designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and it provides a chance to raise awareness about the importance of the early detection of breast cancer when it’s easier to treat. The folks in Tyler and surrounding areas are doing their part this month to increase awareness and raise funds with the planning of several activities geared towards all age groups.

The Old Firehouse In Edom: John Batdorf and Frank Martin Gilligan in Concert This Month Beginning its 2015-16 season of entertainment at the West End of downtown Edom, The Old Firehouse is proud to present an exciting lineup of Acoustic Music Concerts and Independent Films. The first performance in the singer-songwriter series is October 3rd, featuring 70’s recording artist, John Batdorf, of the soft rock duo, “Batdorf and Rodney,” who reached the charts with singles like, “Somewhere in the Night,” “Can You See Him,” and “You Are A Song.” In addition to his duo act, John has been a singer/songwriter since the 70’s. He has an innumerable list of credits both as a composer, vocalist, and staff songwriter for names like America, Kim Carnes, and England Dan, as well as several network television series. Today, he continues his session work, and is writing more of his unique musical compositions. The concert series continues with national singer/songwriter Frank Martin Gilligan on October 24th. Frank has a long history on the country music scene, beginning in the late 70’s as part of the Texas vocal group, “Mason Dixon,” that enjoyed a pretty good run on the charts until 1993. Facing a bout with cancer in 2009, chemo ruined the nerves in his hands and feet, leaving him unable to play guitar. Later on when the “feeling” returned, a lot of good, new songs came with it. He is both, a veteran and a newcomer to the Texas music scene, garnering awards at the 2015 Wildflower Arts & Music Festival, 2014 Kerrville New Folk Competition, and the 2014 Singwriter Seranade Competition. His current “Silver Dollar” CD was released early this past summer with all the elements of great songwriting and soaring vocals, combined with excellent side musicians and vocalists. Beth Wood performs on November 21st, The Sherpas on December 5th and Emily Elbert on December 26th. The film screenings continue with “White God” on October 10th, and “The Wrecking Crew” on November 7th. Admission prices for concerts are typically $12 in advance and $15 and the door, and films range between $8-$10. All events are on Saturday evenings, with concerts beginning at 7:30pm and movies at 7pm. The Old Firehouse is an intimate, smoke-free and alcohol-free “coffeehouse,” which has made a name for itself by bringing national folk musicians and their all-original music to Edom. Information can be found at www.theoldfirehouse.net or by phone at (903)852-ART1 (2781).

Girls Night Out with Country Cool Comedy! Saturday, October 10th at 8pm, Liberty Hall in downtown Tyler will present “Country Cool,” a “straight shootin’ comedy show that laughs at what we’re all dealin’ with… the ‘this can’t really be happening’” moments in life, that make us all feel like we’re losing our minds one traffic jam at a time. Comedians Trish Suhr, Karen Mills, and Leanne Morgan, all have southern roots and are well traveled, diverse, sharp, and savvy. Their no nonsense approach, “Tells it like it is,” but of course, with charm and style. “It’s not redneck, it’s not white trash – these girls are Country Cool! It’s comedy for the masses, because let’s face it, doesn’t matter who you are...everybody’s got a little country in ‘em!” Emmy Award winner Trish Suhr, is a native of Kentucky, now living in Los Angeles. Trish puts a modern spin on keeping it real. The star of Style Network’s long running, “Clean House,” she uses her southern sensibilities to navigate the big city and knows what it takes to stay in the game: spin classes, clean eating, and Spanx! According to Trish, “when the Spanx come off, it’s like opening a can of biscuits.” Trish’s “sass and bourbon” approach to life has landed her on top television shows, including “Good Morning America,” “The New Ricki Lake Show,” “The Marie Osmond Show,” as well as on a variety of programs for CMT, VH1, E!, Style Network, and Lifetime Networks. Karen Mills has a straight-forward approach to the realities of life. Her smart, funny, keen observations will keep you laughing at yourself as you relate to her experiences. Even ovarian cancer couldn’t stop Karen from turning pain into a punchline, “When the surgeon cut me open, my right ovary popped out the size of a cantaloupe, my left ovary the size of a grapefruit...turns out my muffin top was a fruit salad!” She brings a fast-paced comedy style that both men and women love. Karen has toured the nation as a comedian for 22 years. She’s worked clubs, colleges, and theaters across the country, and can be heard daily on Sirius/XM Blue Collar Radio, Laugh USA, iHeart Radio, and Pandora. Additionally, her stand up has been seen on Fox, ABC, and GAC TV. Standing only 5’2”, Karen was a division 1, first team, All American basketball player at UT-Chattanooga and was the first women inducted into their basketball Hall of Fame. Leanne Morgan exudes southern charm. She is a naturally funny storyteller who gives an honest look at suburban life, and the challenges of keeping her ‘husband happy’ while juggling kids, dogs, and cheer-leading camp - plus at the same time racing to get her hair highlighted, have a colonoscopy, and joining Weight Watchers for the 7th time. Leanne will take you on a hilarious walk through motherhood and beyond, as she finds comedy amid the chaos. Leanne’s funny, but honest, point of view has earned her spots on the “Dr. Phil Show” as part of his “advice panel.” She’s also worked with Paula Deen, both “Live” in theaters, as well as numerous appearances on her cooking shows. Leanne was chosen by “The View,” as one of their most hilarious housewives, and she was a finalist on Nick at Nite’s “Funniest Mom in America.” Leanne is heard regularly on Sirius/XM, and has her own show on Blue Collar Radio called “Chewing the Fat.” Tickets are $30 and VIP Box Seats are $175 (seats 4). Classic Rock 96.1 Presents the First-Ever ‘Rock the Square’ in Downtown Tyler
Classic Rock 96.1 and Brian Loncar and Associates are proud to present the first edition of ‘Rock the Square’ on Saturday, October 17th, in downtown Tyler, with headliner 38 Special and opener Jimmie Vaughan and the Tilt-A-Whirl Band. This is going to be a full day of great tunes and killer music with two rock legends set to take the stage. Not only will there be great music, but there will also be “Go Big or Go Home Classic Auto Show,” with 100 classic cars from all over the state showcasing around the downtown Tyler square. The classic car show will start at 1pm and they will hand out awards at 4pm. Interested in having your car being part of the car show? Register for $20 per car at www.classicrock961.com.
38 Special
After more than three decades together, 38 Special continue to bring their signature blast of Southern Rock to over 100 cities a year. And at each and every show, thousands of audience members are amazed by the explosive power of the band’s performance. Their many Gold and Platinum album awards stand in testament to the endurance of a legendary powerhouse. With sales in excess of $20 million, most associate the band with their arena-rock pop smashes, “Hold On Loosely,” “Rockin’ Into the Night,” “Caught Up in You,” “Fantasy Girl,” “If I’d Been the One,” “Back Where You Belong,” “Chain Lightnin’,” “Second Chance,” and more – timeless hits that remain a staple at radio, immediately recognizable from the first opening chord, and paving the way to their present-day touring regimen. Guitarist/vocalist Don Barnes says it’s all about maintaining that intensity in their live shows. “We never wanted to be one of those bands that had maybe gotten a little soft or complacent over the years. We’re a team, and it’s always been kind of an unspoken rule that we don’t slack up, we stack up. We go out there every night to win.” It is that steely determination that lives on in the hearts of these ‘Wild-Eyed Southern Boys.’ Completing the team is guitarist/vocalist Danny Chauncey, bassist Barry Dunaway, drummer Gary Moffatt and keyboardist/vocalist Bobby Capps. For 38 Special onstage, it is a celebration of camaraderie and brotherhood, a precision unit bringing the dedication and honesty to a long history of classic songs, as well as surprisingly fresh new material. Since 1976, the band has released more than 15 albums. And from the start, they’ve toured relentlessly, bringing their signature brand of ‘muscle and melody’ to fans worldwide. Barnes adds, “This music keeps our wheels on the road. We’re a band that’s tried to stay honest with what has driven us over the years. We started out with nothing but bold determination to make our own history and to endure. Looking back now, it has been our greatest pride to have persevered and attained that level of success, and longevity. For us, it’s the ultimate validation.” Around the fall of 2009, the notion of releasing a new live album started to take precedent. The band felt that their in-concert offering many years before had lacked in sound quality not yet available in the technologically-advanced decade since. Additionally, a need to showcase a new spirit of 38 Special was growing, a band that had matured into a tighter unit after three decades on the road, with an innate
ability to read each other on the stage. Barnes explains, “Back then, we had been rushed to release something quickly without having the luxury of choosing between different performances. It was a single show in the 90’s that had been recorded at a venue where logistics were a real challenge, the weather wasn’t cooperating, and we ended up not entirely satisfied with what we got. For the album, “Live From Texas,” we were able to carry our digital recording equipment with us to several cities, and now had our own private studio for remixing. So this was going to be a real pleasure to put together. The crowds were massive and all of those classic songs deserved a chance to shine in an enhanced live fashion. We were finally able to deliver what we represent onstage.” Their initial idea was to make a live recording available exclusively at the band’s shows, with an eye toward having fans take home a copy to carry on the party. But what they found as they listened back – after gleaning select tracks from various cities across Texas - was a blistering new set with a distinct difference in performance as well as audio quality than years before. It grew into an excitedly motivated plan to make available to the world 38 Special, “Live From Texas,” a collectively proud history of a band that has made the road a part of its heritage. “And the magic’s still there,” adds Barnes. “It’s an emotional high for us to keep ‘bringing it’ after all these years. That’s what you hear on the new live stuff, that sense of urgency and power.” “When those lights go down and we all walk up those steps to the stage and hear that crowd roar, it’s a real rush to the head. It feels like we’re getting ready to strap ourselves in and it just takes off from there.” 38 Special will perform at 6:45pm.
culture, from spearheading the current blues revival with The Fabulous Thunderbirds to his longtime, innate fashion sense of slicked-back hair and sharp vintage threads (now seen throughout the pages of contemporary fashion journals) to becoming a premier designer of classic custom cars. But for Jimmie Vaughan, none of it is part of a crusade or a career plan. It’s just his natural way of living his life, and pursuing the interests that have captivated Vaughan since his youth. As Jimmie Vaughan emerged as an artist in his own right, his reputation as a master musician became even more apparent, thanks to the admiration of blues legends like B.B. King and Buddy Guy, such guitar superstars as Eric Clapton and Z.Z. Top’s Billy Gibbons, and talents like Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. As Clapton notes, “The first time I heard Jimmie Vaughan, I was impressed with the raw power of his sound. His style is unique, and if I’ve learned anything from him, it’s to keep it simple.” Likewise, Buddy Guy once proclaimed, “He’s unbeatable when it comes to the blues. He just plays it like it’s supposed to be played.” Even the late Stevie Ray Vaughan acknowledged that when people would compare his playing to that of his brother, there was really no contest. “I play probably 80 percent of what I can play. Jimmie plays one percent of what he knows. He can play anything.” Jimmie Vaughan is more modest in assessing his abilities, though very clear when it comes to his approach. “I try to speak with my guitar in sentences,” he explains. “The people that I enjoy and the music Jimmie Vaughan that I enjoy are not about just a bunch of licks strung together. If you & the Tilt-A-Whirl just play a bunch of guitar licks that aren’t connected, it’s like throwBand ing a lot of words into a bowl. It doesn’t make any sense. It’s just words. “When I listen to Gene Ammons, the great saxophone player, I get the Jimmie Vaughan is far more feeling he’s telling you a story. Loretta Lynn with Texas Rebellion
This legendary concert will be at Caldwell Auditorium, 300 S. College Ave., Tyler. Her music has confronted many of the major social issues of her time, and her life story is a rags-to-riches tale familiar to pop, rock, and country fans alike. “The Coal Miner’s Daughter,” the tag that refers to a hit single, an album, a best-selling autobiography, an Oscarwinning film, and to Lynn herself - has journeyed from the poverty of the Kentucky hills to Nashville super-stardom, to her current status as an honestto-goodness American icon. “The Time Jumpers: Vince Gill, Kenny Sears, & Ranger Doug Green”
Tap any member of “The Time Jumpers” on the shoulder and the face that turns to greet you will be that of one who’s made major contributions to country music. To list the artists these pickers have recorded and toured with, would be tantamount to posting all the Billboard country charts for the past 30 years. And, the stages these luminaries have graced extend from the Grand Ole Opry to Carnegie Hall. That there are three fiddles in the band is a tipoff that these guys have an overwhelming affection for western swing. The current edition of “The Time Jumpers” includes 10 members, each a master of his instrument. Alphabetically, which is the only diplomatic way to present such a phalanx of evenly matched talent, are Dennis Crouch (upright bass), Larry Franklin (fiddle), Paul Franklin (steel guitar), Vince Gill (vocals, electric and acoustic guitars), “Ranger Doug” Green (vocals, acoustic rhythm guitar), Andy Reiss (electric guitar), Kenny Sears (vocals, fiddle), Joe Spivey (fiddle, vocals), Jeff Taylor (accordion, piano), and Billy Thomas (drums, vocals). Tickets go on sale October 5th. Cowan Center is located at 3900 University Blvd. on The University of Texas at Tyler campus. Art TMA Looks Through the Lens with “Ansel Adams: Early Works”
The iconic work of one of the giants in the field of landscape photography is the focus of the Tyler Museum of Art’s next major exhibition, “Ansel Adams: Early Works.” The show opens to the public Sunday, October 11th and continues through January 3rd, 2016 at the TMA, 1300 S. Mahon Ave. on the Tyler Junior College main campus. TMA members and special guests are invited for a first look at the exhibition during the Preview Reception, from 5:30-7pm, Saturday, October 10th at the Museum. To RSVP or for information on becoming a TMA member, call (903)595-1001 or visit www.tylermuseum.org. Adams (1902-1984) – an accomplished musician, naturalist, explorer, critic and teacher in addition to his photographic prowess – represented the end of a movement in American art focused on capturing the beauty in the pristine Western landscape. Yet most audiences are only familiar with the heroic, high-contrast prints, on high-gloss paper stock, that Adams manufactured to order in the 1970s and ‘80s. “Much less familiar are the intimate prints, rich in middle tones, which Adams crafted earlier in his career. That’s the primary focus of this exhibition,” TMA Executive Director Chris Leahy stated recently. The more than 30 works in “Early Works,” drawn from the private collection of Michael Mattis and Judith Hochberg, highlight the small-scale prints Adams produced from the 1920’s into the 1950’s. “This exhibition guides you through an evolution in printing styles that complements the scenic grandeur of his natural subjects, revealing Adams as a true ‘poet of light,’ both in the field and in the darkroom,” Leahy said. “Ansel Adams: Early Works” was organized by art2art Circulating Exhibitions, LLC. Local support
for the exhibition is provided by Collectors’ Circle Platinum Sponsor The Robert M. Rogers Foundation; and Collectors’ Circle Gold Sponsors Sheryl Rogers Palmer, and Agnes and Frank Ward. General exhibition admission is $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens. TMA members, students, children 12 and under, TJC faculty and staff, and City of Tyler employees are admitted free. “Ansel Adams: Early Works” will be the focus of two programs in this year’s Fall Lecture Series: “Ansel Adams: An Introduction to Advocacy” by Dr. David Coleman of Texas State University on Sunday, October 25th; and “Through the Lens with Ansel Adams” by Robert Langham, local photographer and former student of Adams, on Sunday, November 15th. Both programs begin at 2pm at the TMA, and are open to the public at no charge. Additional special events include First Friday Art Tours at 11am, November 6th and December 4th, and Family Days from 2-4pm Saturday, November 14th and December 12th. The Tyler Museum of Art is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and a participant in the North American Reciprocal Museum Association (NARM), which allows TMA members to receive free or discount admission at hundreds of additional museums throughout the U.S. and Canada. For a complete list of participating NARM institutions, visit narmassociation.org. Regular TMA hours are 10am-5pm TuesdaySaturday, and 1-5pm Sunday; the Museum is closed Mondays and most major holidays. The Museum is supported by its Members, Tyler Junior College and the City of Tyler. For more information, call (903)595-1001 or visit www.tylermuseum.org.

“AMERICANA” An Art Show by Latvian Artist, Dace Lucia Kidd
Dace Lucia Kidd will celebrate her second American solo art show beginning on October 10th at the Arcadia Theater in historic downtown Tyler. Her show will be hosted by the Martin Walker Law Firm, 121 N. Spring Street, in their elegantly renovated Arcadia Theater. Her show will run through February 28th, 2016. Famed local DJ, “ARIS” will create a sonic mood throughout the evening and bring his high energy creativity to the after-party. In addition to the gift of the amazing venue, Dace’s art show is being generously sponsored by many local businesses. Bernard Mediterranean Restaurant will provide samples of their quality fare, while representatives of Pelle Legna vineyards will be on hand to serve samples of their locally grown, award-winning wines. Dace Lucia Kidd is deeply grateful to her many sponsors: Dave and Carolyn Bain, Chad and Dana Cargile, Linda and Frank Moore, Jennifer Ramsey, Suzie and Reed Rippy, Don Warren, Ginger and Bob Young, The Van Corporation, and Three Z Azian Cuizine. Dace says, “I will be displaying over 20 pieces that have been recently created since I moved to America four years ago. The show will include paintings (oil on canvas and mixed media), and installations. The works will reflect my unique perspective as a fresh consumer of American pop culture, and show my appreciation of its power and beauty.” Dace says her style of art “is primarily painting. One of the most characteristic things of my art is that I merge together different styles and media. I create paintings that look like sculptures, my sculptures can be perceived as drawings or design objects, my drawings hold pictorial qualities.” She says her influences “are ever changing because I am inspired by my surroundings; therefore, at the moment, my greatest inspiration is the American experience. I like to work with traditional and contemporary compositions. It is important for me to communicate references from history and current events. My main focus is on image making and remakes, that’s why I have always been inspired by the work of other artists. Currently one of my favorite influences is fashion, because it’s ever changing and seeks to capture the moment.” Dace Lucia Kidd was born in 1987 in Riga, Latvia and is a classically trained Texas artist working primarily in the media of oil on canvas. Her installations and paper sculptures along with her large scale drawings and paintings are better known in Europe. Dace (pronounced, “Dot-sa”) completed her degree work at Art Academy of Latvia in Riga, and received advanced training for two years at Accademia di belle Arti in Palermo, on the island of Sicily. Dace says that her mother took her to the first real art shop after her country fought for independence from Russia in 1992. Seeing that her child was gifted, she spent two weeks salary on a brush and some paint. Her mother’s gesture will never be forgotten. Dace still has that brush, and remains committed to creating a pathway to communicate through her art. Often abstract in design but conveying simple, relatable themes, her granite work draws much of its inspiration from the rustic, expansive landscapes of the Southwest desert. A digital map spotlighting the locations of sculptures featured in “Rock Walk” is available at www.tylermuseum.org. Printed maps also are available in the lobby for the sculpture sites on campus. As a complement to the nine-month outdoor installation, a series of smallerscale pieces will be featured during an indoor TMA exhibition, “The Granite Sculpture of Candyce Garrett,” continuing through Sunday, January 17th, 2016. The Museum show will spotlight more than 20 of Garrett’s recent works, each following themes similar to those featured in the outdoor project, but with the distinction that, “the average weight of these pieces are around 500, rather than 5,000 pounds,” TMA Executive Director Chris Leahy said. Theatre Cherokee Civic Theatre Kicks Off 2015-2016 Season With ‘Shrek The Musical TYA’ Cherokee Civic Theatre celebrates its 43rd season of providing great community theatre with a fun-filled schedule of four shows. Kicking off the year is “Shrek The Musical TYA” (Theatre for Young Audiences), all the fun of the original Broadway show made a bit shorter to appeal to families and young people. Join Shrek the Ogre and his “stalwart steed” Donkey as they rescue the Princess, foil the villainous Lord Farquaad and meet a host of favorite fairy tale characters along the way. It’s the animated movie live with songs that delight and amuse. Directed by Jessica House and produced by Jon Paul Kelley, performances of “Shrek the Musical TYA” will be November 7th, 8th, 13th, 14th and 15th. Setting the holiday mood is a classic story in a new format. Performed as a 1940’s radio show with theater-goers as the ‘studio audience,’ “It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” taps all nostalgia buttons with the heart-warming tale of angel-in-training, Clarence, showing desperate George Bailey how one life can touch and transform so many others - and it will be performed as an old-fashioned radio show complete with ‘commercials’ and live sound effects. Under the co-direction of Karen Hendley and Judy Faye Garner, “It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” will be performed December 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th. Come February, CCT presents, “Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming,” the final installment of the popular gospel and bluegrass musical trilogy. World War 2 is over and Dennis comes home from the Marines to find many changes: Denise is raising rambunctious twins, June is expecting her first baby, the Reverend is taking on a new church, and Uncle Stanley is back from Hollywood. But Vera and Burl are still singing and keeping everyone on key. Join the Sanders as they reunite one last time to celebrate faith and family in a touching final performance at the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. With Jerry Parker and Sheilah O’Heaney as co-directors, “Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming” will run February 20th, 21st, 26th, 27th and 28th with a dinner theatre evening in the works. Putting a big bow on to wrap up the season is, “Always a Bridesmaid,” from the team of Wooten, Jones and Hope, who brought us the southern-fried comedies “Dixie Swim Club,” and “Dearly Departed.” Over the years, four friends see each other through bridal jitters, bridesmaids dresses, and bridezilla moments, as well as marital snags and the ups and downs of parenthood. Everyone ever involved in a wedding will delight in this comic romp that touches the heart while tickling the funny bones. Directed by Castanya Breen with Judy Faye Garner producing, “Always a Bridesmaid” will run April 23rd, 24th, 29th, 30th and May 1st. CCT Season memberships are now on sale. Members include reserved seating for all performances, discounts on additional tickets as well as early and discounted registration for “TNT,” CCT’s popular summer camp, and other perks. CCT Season Memberships make great gifts, can be used as employee incentives, and are a great way to keep the arts alive in East Texas. For more information on CCT Season Memberships, upcoming shows, and future auditions, visit the Cherokee Civic Theatre website at www.cherokeetheatre.net or call the Box Office at (903)683-2131. All performances will be held at the historic Cherokee Theater, just off the Square in Rusk Texas.
Productions
Thursday, October 1st (7pm) - “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” featuring the national tour of the Broadway production, will be on stage at the Belcher Center. One of the most enduring shows of all time, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is the irresistible family musical about the trials and triumphs of Joseph, Israel’s favorite son. The first collaboration of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber (“Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Cats”) and lyricist Tim Rice (“Jesus Christ Superstar,” “The Lion King”), “Joseph” blends pop, country, and rock into an uplifting, technicolored story of biblical proportions. Belcher Performance Center at LeTourneau University is located at 2100 S. Mobberly, Longview. For more info call (903)2333080 or log online at www.belchercenter.com. Box office hours are Monday-Friday, 10am-5pm. Thursday-Sunday, October 1st-4th and Thursday-Saturday, October 8th-11th (Evenings at 7:30pm, Sundays at 2:30pm) - “9 to 5: The Musical” will be on stage at Henderson County Performing Arts Center. Pushed to the boiling point by their boss, three female co-workers concoct a plan to get even with their sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical, bigot boss. They conspire to take control of their company, and learn there’s nothing they can’t do - even in a man’s world. Set in the late 1970’s, this is a hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era. This is outrageous, thought-provoking, and even a little romantic; it’s about teaming up and taking care of business. Henderson County Performing Arts Center is located at 400 Gibson Road in Athens. For more info call (903)675-3908 or log in at www.hcpac.org. Tickets start at $7. Friday-Sunday, October 2nd-4th (Evenings at 7:30pm, Sundays 2:30pm) - “Of Mice and Men” will be on stage at Henderson Civic Theatre. Adapted from John Steinbeck’s 1937 novel of the same name, this play earned the 1938 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Best Play. George, an affable migrant farm worker, and Lennie, a towering simple-minded, pleasantly humble, young man, are the subjects. They are bound by George’s devotion and Lennie’s “pathetic helplessness.” George’s guardianship keeps Lennie out of trouble, but we soon see this is a slippery slope. Lennie’s displays of love results in several deaths, ranging from mice and puppies, to a beautiful woman. Eventually, in the face of a lynch mob, George kills Lennie to put him out of his misery. Henderson Civic Theatre is located at 122 E. Main Street in Henderson. For more info call (903)657-2968 or log on at www.hendersoncivictheatre.org. Tickets start at $15. Friday-Sunday, October 2nd-4th (Evenings at 7:30pm, Sundays 2pm) - “The Count Will Rise Again (Dracula in Dixie)” will be on stage at Lake Country Playhouse. The Dracula legend goes South in this outrageous spoof featuring the world’s first Yankee vampire, Count Dracula of Pennsylvania. The action takes place on the plantation of Doc Stewart, a proper Southern gentleman physician who runs a kind-of halfway house of “recovering politicians and other emotionally disturbed persons.” This is a funny play! Lake Country Playhouse is located at 114 North Johnson Street in Mineola. For more info call (903)569-2300 or log on at lakecountryplayhouse.com. Tickets are $15-20 depending on production. Friday-Sunday, October 2nd-4th (Evenings at 7:30pm, Sunday at 2pm) - “These Shining Lives” will be on stage at Lindale Community Theatre. Based on the true story of four women who worked in a watch factory in Ottawa, Illinois, the play dramatizes the danger women faced in the workforce in the 1920’s, and the lack of concern by companies for protecting the health of its employees. Narrated by one of the workers, Catherine Donohue, “These Shining Lives” shows women getting a chance for a well-paying job in the 1920’s and early 1930’s, which was uncharacteristic for the time in the United States. Lindale Community Theatre is located at 109 W. Hubbard Street, downtown Lindale. For more info call (903)638-0402 or log on at www.lindalecommunitytheater.org. Tickets for adults are $15, students $12, 12 and under $8. Wednesday-Sunday, October 7th-11th (Evenings at 7:30pm, Sunday at 2pm) - “Anne of the Thousand Days” at the Jean Browne
Theatre. The is based on the historical events surrounding the founding of the Church of England. Catherine of Aragon, empowered wife of King Henry VIII, has yet to give birth to an heir. King Henry’s wandering eyes fall on the devout and nubile Anne Boleyn, who refuses his sexual advances. Henry eventually convinces Anne to marry him, but to move forward, the king must face a church that believes divorce is a sin. The Jean Browne Theatre is located on the Tyler Junior College campus, 1400 E. 5th St., Tyler. The theatre box office opens one week prior to performances. Box office hours are 10am-6pm, weekdays only, throughout the run of performances. For more info call (903)510-2212 or log on to www.tjc.edu. Sunday, October 11th (2pm) - “A Little Afternoon Music” will be performed by The Lake Country Symphonic Band at the Lake Country Playhouse, located at 114 North Johnson Street in Mineola. For more info call (903)569-2300 or log on to www.lakecountryplayhouse.com. Adult tickets are $7 and children 11 and under are $5. Friday-Sunday, October 23rd-25th and Friday-Sunday, October 30th-November 1st (Evenings at 7:30pm, Sundays at 2:30pm) “Murder By Natural Causes” will be on stage at Tyler Civic Theatre. It combines twists and turns and delivers what mystery fans love most—taut suspense with an ingenious plot. Arthur Sinclair is a successful world-famous mentalist in the tradition of Dunninger. His beautiful, and much younger wife, Allison, plots his murder for the commonest of all motives - greed. She enlists the aid of a struggling young actor. Her foolproof murder plan cannot possibly misfire, as it’s too skillfully inventive - or is it? After all, Arthur (as everyone knows) has psychic gifts. But does he? Once the killing scheme is set in motion, the plot begins to evolve into a maze of confusion. Nothing is as it seems. Is mind reading possible? Can the future be foretold? Just when the audience thinks they know what will happen next, there is another unexpected turn to complicate matters. The mystery builds to an exciting climax. Surprise ending? Oh yeah! It will take all of your mental powers to solve this wildly clever, and entertaining thriller. Tyler Civic Theatre is located at 400 Rose Park Drive in Tyler, next to the Tyler Rose Garden Center. For more info call (903)592-0561 or log on to www.tylercivictheatre.com. The box office is open MondayFriday, 10am-1pm and 2-5pm. Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for students. Thursday, October 22nd (9:30am & 12:30pm) “Caps for Sale: The Musical” will be performed at the Cowan Center. “Monkey business! Caps! Caps for sale! Fifty cents a cap!” In this fun production. the peddler has a huge stack of caps, balanced carefully on top of his head - brown caps, blue caps, gray caps, and red caps. Unfortunately, no one wants to buy a cap. So the peddler goes for a walk in the country and takes a nap under a shady tree. When he wakes up, the caps are gone - all except his own checked one. Where could his caps have gone? And how will he ever get them back? Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of this favorite book, this new musical will enchant lower elementary children. Saturday & Sunday, November 7th & 8th and Friday, Saturday & Sunday, November 13th-15th - “Shrek The Musical” at the Cherokee Civic Theatre. Throw in a short tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude, and our favorite fairy tale misfits and watch the animated movie come to life. Cherokee Civic Theatre is located at 157 W. 5th Street, Rusk, Texas. For more info call (903)683-2131 or log on at www.cherokeetheatre.net. Tickets start at $10. Friday-Sunday, November 27th-29th and December 4th-6th (Evenings 7:30pm - Sundays 2:30pm) “Red, White and Tuna” at Henderson Civic Theatre. The third in a series of comedic plays (preceded by “Greater Tuna” and “A Tuna Christmas” and followed by “Tuna Does Vegas”), is set in the fictional town of Tuna, Texas, the “third-smallest” town in the state. All the plays are at once an affectionate comment on small-town Southern life, and attitudes, but also a withering satire of the same. The plays are notable in that two men play the entire cast of over twenty eccentric characters of both genders and various ages. Henderson Civic Theatre is located at 122 E. Main Street in Henderson. The unique thing about “What Alice Forgot” is, that although having been referred to as a chik-lit book, there is something to be gained by reading this book for anyone who wonders just exactly how they got to where they are in their relationships and lives. “Where She Went” by Gayle Forman This book is a sequel to Forman’s 2010 novel, “If I Stay,” which told the story of main character Mia who is in a coma after a fatal car accident in which she lost her parents and brother. Encouraged to not die and “stay” by her boyfriend Adam, Mia survives her coma and recovers from the accident. “Where She Went” takes place three years after, and Mia and her boyfriend Adam have lost contact with each other. Forman has produced another book that is very well written, with characterizations that are well developed. It answers all the questions that readers might have had as to what happened to Adam and Mia following “If I Stay.” Told from Adam’s point of view, the main plot of this book consists of Adam finding Mia and the two of them walking through New York City while discussing their relationship with flashbacks interspersed throughout, explaining Adam’s breakdown and subsequent rise to fame. Readers who like character studies and who want to know what happened to Mia and Adam will like this book, however, it doesn’t have Forman’s brilliance found in “If I Stay.” This is another YA book – like the first – which I apparently had forgotten. That being said, the majority of the novel is a painful break-up scene that flashes forward and back between the love that the young couple shared, and the present words that must be spoken to free themselves from the trauma that they continue to live and walk around with. With an ending that could have been cathartic and refreshing, I was pretty much disappointed. Don’t get me wrong. This is a good book and Forman does a good job of dumping the reader right into the main character’s head so that they are able to be immersed in their emotions and thoughts, but I think I would have enjoyed a little more depth. Maybe YA books just don’t intend to explore the depths of relationships, but what a shame that is. Perhaps with a bit more depth, authors like Forman, who engage huge audiences of young readers, would be able to share more than the glitz of fame and the instant gratification of young love. Smith County Medical Society Alliance Book Fair A Book Lover’s Paradise will be open Thursday-Saturday, October 22nd-24th, 8am to 6pm each day. The SCMSA’s refurbished building, at 2004 Broussard Street, right around the corner from their original red and white striped building, provides you, their most valued customers, a much more comfortable shopping experience with wider aisles, good lighting, a larger check out area, and no outside books - they are all housed indoors, in the back room. For over forty five years, the volunteer members of the Smith County Medical Society Alliance have sorted, labeled, shelved, and organized donated books for their two sales each year. This is the Alliance’s chief fundraiser, with 75 percent of the proceeds going toward scholarships and 25 percent for Alliance-related community projects. The Book Fair was conceived in 1968 with the first sale taking place in 1969. The first few sales were in different locations. Close to $500,000 from the book sale proceeds have been awarded for health career scholarships at the University of Texas at Tyler and Tyler Junior College. A Presidential Scholarship, $25,000, has been endowed at each school for a number of years. An endowed scholarship for a masters nursing student has also been started. In addition to the Presidential Scholarships, individual scholarships are also awarded to deserving students each year at both schools. Culling, sorting, pricing, and shelving by volunteers take place two or more days per week almost all year long to keep up with the large volume of donated books. We have every topic represented in 25 sections: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Biographies, Autobiographies, paperback and hardback, Cook Books, Travel, Gardening, Large Print, Gift Books, Texana, Westerns, Mystery, Science, Science Fiction, Classics, Business, Romance, Self-Help, Health, Home and Repair, Music, Records, CD’s, VHS, Art, Theatre, Religion, Reference, History, Military...and the list goes on and on. Most of the books sell in the range of $.50 to $5. The alliance continues to partner with Achieving Dreams. This is a day program for Adults with special needs, located at Shiloh Road Church of Christ. The “Achievers” in this group volunteer one day a week at the Book Fair building, and help with alphabetizing, shredding, cleaning of the building, and moving books from the sorting room to the appropriate sections for shelving. The SCMSA gives these young adults the opportunity to meet their goal of “giving back” to the community, as well as learning invaluable work and communication skills in a real life setting with a non-threatening environment. They have become invaluable to the operation at the Book Fair! They also have some very rare and valuable books. The following list is a few of our new additions: “For Texas I Will - The History of Memorial Stadium” by Richard Pennington; signed by Texas Coach Darrell Royal, “The Time it Never Rained” by Elmer Kelton; signed, “Some Classic Trains” and “More Classic Trains” by Arthur D. Dubin; “The Illustrated Edition of 1776” in Slipcase by David McCullough (Winner of the Pulitzer Prize); “Gunsmoke in the Redlands” by Joseph F. Combs; a signed 1st Edition, “George Washington Arrington – Civil War Spy, Texas Ranger Sheriff and Rancher” by Jerry Sinise; a signed 1st edition, “Guadalcanal Diary” by Richard Tregaskis; a 1st printing, “The Fiery Fountains” by Margaret Anderson; a 1st edition, “Black Hills Gold and Other Tellable Tales” by Margaret J. Wiggins; and signed, “Kiplings Works,” a 10 volume complete set. The SCMSA building is located at 2004 Broussard Street in Tyler. Please keep in mind we accept only checks and cash.
