Food Roast Social Kitchen: Thoughtfully Prepared, Joyfully Shared By Barbara King You know the old adage, what’s in a name? Well in the case of Roast Social Kitchen, pretty much everything! The edgy, urban, new production by the husband and wife team that brought you the famous Stanley’s BBQ in Tyler is a restaurant dedicated to the nutrition of both body and soul. Roast Social Kitchen is located in midtown, right in the heart of the Medical District on 5th St. and Fleishel St. It’s the perfect spot for anything and everything: think “social.” This is the spot to come in, kick back, spread out, and enjoy healthy, farm to table food in a fast, casual, laid-back environment. It took a lot of research, experimentation, and love to get Roast Social Kitchen (RSK) up and running, but most importantly, it was a family venture undertaken to give back to the community. From a dozen different dough ideas, to a trip to New York City with intensive pizza-making training, Nick and Jen Pencis have opened a restaurant that serves food with intention. “Anyone can eat well with all but one of our menu items gluten-free,” explains Assistant GM Kate Tisdale. “The pizza oven that we use was purchased and shipped from Italy, and it has the capability to cook nine pizzas at the same time.” The gargantuan oven, a high tech version of the old wood-burning type, is much more efficient, cooking a pizza in literally three minutes on a rotating stone base. Stepping through the front door is a treat to the senses

featuring long reclaimed wood tables with fun and funky colorful artwork by local artists adorning the brick walls. There are great dining options to choose from. You can order up front and take your time in the spacious dining room, or hit the over 21 bar area with high-top seating and a great cool vibe. Whichever way you go, you can be sure that the service is going to be great and your server super helpful with menu options. Start your adventure with “small talk and conversation starters” that includes a wide variety of flavorful ideas such as caramelized onion dip, roasted red pepper, and three cheese spread, the big cheese board (gruyere, manchego, gorgonzola, and Haute Goat, served with summer fresh fruit and roasted pecans) all served with RSK dough-made crackers. Fresh is the name of the game at RSK, so salads are as fresh as they come. Summer strawberry salad is a crowd pleaser (local goat cheese, cilantro, candied pecans, fresh organic strawberries tossed with spinach, romaine and arugula in honey lime vinaigrette), CC’s Caesar (named after Jen’s mom who is a chef in her own right), and if cold is your favorite, try the cucumber, avocado, and roasted jalapeno gazpacho. Pizzas are classic at RSK, and you can always build your own with some sage advice from your server. 5 Boroughs Pizza came straight from NYC, with a New York style crust topped with their signature tomato sauce and whole milk mozzarella. The classics also include a herb-crusted margherita pizza, with roasted garlic, homemade fresh mozzarella and fresh basil with a hint of balsamic. It’s not hard to figure out that RSK is into ‘fresh, farm, and local’ whenever possible, and this makes for a one-of-akind pizza. The pizza dough is made each day using unbleached flour milled from red spring wheat, sea salt, Texas-grown extra virgin olive oil, and filtered water. The dough is proofed and allowed to rise so that the yeast can produce maximum flavor, aroma, and texture. Signature style pizzas include the much talked about Bee’s Knees (roast garlic, RSK 4-cheese blend, soppressata, and RSK sausage topped with Mike’s Hot Honey, thyme, and fresh orange). The Meat Hater’s Pizza is a veggie delight with RSK sauce, mozzarella and manchego cheese, roasted cremini mushrooms, red peppers, and caramelized onion,

Jack Ryan's Steak & Chophouse

topped with spinach, parsley, rosemary, gremolata in a citrus basil vinaigrette. If you’ve forgotten that these are the folks from Stanley’s BBQ, try the Smoke Stack, featuring their famous pecan-smoked chopped brisket, their incredible BBQ sauce, mozzarella, and diced red onion. The tongue in cheek menu also promotes the Virgin Mary pizza, with Texas-grown extra virgin olive oil, gruyere, roasted potatoes, and Taggiasca olives topped with fresh rosemary. Kids are part of the family, so the menu comes complete with a kids’ table list of treats, including coppa ham and cheese pizza; veggies, hummus, fruit, veggies, and peanut butter; and a coppa ham and mozzarella tray. Top it all off with a sweet goodbye of a dessert: seasonal mascarpone fruit mousse, carrot cake whoopie pie, lavender cheesecake (topped with decadent Earl Grey whipped cream), made to order mousse, or Date Night (whipped ricotta topped with warmed Medjool dates dusted with salt and roasted pecans). The art of the cocktail is evident in the bar area with a very extensive and interesting selection of spirits and libations including wine, local beers, and cocktails on draft. The House Old Fashioned is a popular favorite with a twist on a classic: rye, pecan syrup, and two types of bitters. The bartender can whip up almost anything including martinis, barrel-aged manhattan, mai tais, and daiquiris. Beers on tap include local favorites from Tyler’s own True Vine Brewery: Rose City Pale Ale and Round Table. Of course, there’s a wide variety of great wine by the glass and a huge spirits list with the best in bourbon, rye, Irish whiskey, rum, vodka, gin, tequila, and mescal. What’s bound to be a conversation starter is RSK’s 20 red and white wines on tap. The on-tap method ensures wine that never goes bad with airing. Happy hour is Monday-Friday 3-6:30pm, and Saturday 11am-5pm with craft beers available for $5, domestics for $3, cocktails for $5, and wine for $6. Visit RSK where they “slice, dice, roast, peel, chop, marinate, caramelize, whip, rise, blend, assemble, and love all of their menu items.” Roast Social Kitchen is located at 1125 E. 5th St., Tyler. RSK is open Monday-Thursday 11am-10pm, Friday 11am-1am, Saturday 11am-2am, and closed Sunday. For more info and to-go orders, call (903)202-0295 or go to roastsocialkitchen.com or on Facebook at @roastsocialkitchen.

Where’s the Beef? By Jessie Stevens I’ve heard it from many of my friends, “It’s almost hunting season!” This means nothing to me; I don’t hunt, but I certainly love good quality meat - and fresh all-natural meat is even better. It has a different flavor, and there is just something great about knowing that you have the best available on your plate. It is even better if it was produced locally. Tyler has a few options, both fresh and available to you in a restaurant, where you can get the best around.

Country Meat Market “Freshly cut meat from your local butcher shop” is the slogan, and it is also the reason that Country Meat Market has been in business for 62 years. According to them,“The Country Meat Market is a family-owned-and-operated butcher shop. We have been in business since 1954, and our shop offers the freshest meats in town. Originally established by Bud Morris, The Country Meat Market carries on Bud’s tradition of offering fresh, hand-cut steaks and specialty meats. Although he has passed on, Bud’s family continues to operate the business, and our store has been in the same location for more than 50 years.” Quality meat is key, and Country Meat Market offers Black Label Reserve Beef, which is the finest beef available in East Texas. The Morris Family spent 10 years developing the specifications that ensure the most tender and flavorful beef you can buy. The history shows in the quality of each step. All of the beef is Angus/Hereford Blend, which are English breeds that are considered the most flavorful and tender. No Brahman or dairy influences are allowed, and ranchers and packers sign affidavits certifying animals’ English heritage. This beef is truly Breed Specific, not just a color. Black Label Reserve grades are in the top 2/3 of Choice. This is as close to Prime as is available. Cuts available are Ribeye, Bone-in Ribeye, Tenderloin, Sirloin, and Brisket. All of these are fresh and cut by hand to your order. This beef is grass/grain vegetarian fed, and hormone and antibiotic free. Because they bring in the whole animal, all cuts are available from ribeye to all roasts, bone-in and boneless. You can also find the freshest and most tender pork in all of East Texas at this butcher shop. Their most popular pork item is Country Meat Market’s specially made bacon, which comes from a 60-year-old family recipe. It is a sugar cured and hickory smoked slab of bacon that they offer freshly-sliced daily. This is bacon like Grandma used to serve! Additional pork cuts available include pork steaks, pork roast, center-cut pork chops (boneless or bone in), pan sausage and breakfast sausage (ground daily), baby back ribs, pure pork sausage links (ground in-house and available in German, Cajun, Regular, Italian, and Cheese and Pepper flavors). “They cut [the meat] while you watch and package it however you want. This is what a meat market is supposed to be like. They have the best and freshest meat around!” said Bud

Moone from Kilgore on a recent visit. Country Meat Market has long been known for their unique and heavenly Specialty Filets. They are Bud’s 41-year-old recipe made with the smallest tenderloins they can find, trimmed even closer to make sure it is only the most tender flavorful meat, then wrapped in sugar-cured, hickory smoked bacon creating a fantastic flavor. These are great on the grill, baked, or smoked. They come in 6-ounce and 8-ounce sizes. They also offer a full line of natural chicken (boneless, skinless breasts, bone-in breasts, leg quarters, and wings) that are free of hormones and steroids and fed with natural feed that does not contain animal byproducts. Country Meat Market has fresh produce, many locally created specialty items and all that you need to create a heavenly meal. Check out their Facebook page (@countrymeatmarkettyler) for special items that they may carry in limited supply and specials. Country Meat Market is located at 2308 E. Front St., Tyler. They are open Monday-Saturday 9am-6pm. Saturdays they serve their own meats cooked with local restaurant’s favorite recipes. For more info call (903)405-3205 or go to countrymarkettyler.com.

growing up, but after learning about the disturbing practices America uses to raise animals now, I knew that I wanted to be part of a change. We’re a local family farm in Tyler, Texas, raising pastured poultry, eggs, lamb, and grass fed cattle. Using sustainable rotational grazing management, all our animals are allowed to be on pasture 24/7 to ensure they have the highest quality of life while producing the most healthy and nutrient dense products possible. Our pastures are free of any commercial herbicides, and our animals are free of any added growth hormones, drugs, or genetically modified food used by the commercial food industry. Using these methods, we produce great tasting meat and eggs for your table!” As well as being part of the Rose City Farmers Market, Lonesome Lady Ranch offers a share program called Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). This is a relationship between farms and the consumer that allows a seasonal “membership” in return for a monthly share of products from the farms. This allows you to support three different family farms in a way that lets them plan their livestock production for a more consistent market while providing you with the freshest and highest quality meat and egg products for your family. “This strengthens our relationships with the community and makes you an integral part of our business and family,” Rhodes said. Victory Farms of Alba, Texas provides the pork portion of the shares from their pastureraised, non-gmo and non-soy fed hogs. Lonesome Lady Ranch of Tyler, Texas supplies the grass fed lamb and chicken, and eggs portion of the shares from the pasture-raised, non-gmo and non-soy fed, free-range chickens. Twin Pines Beef of Garden Valley, Texas, supplies beef from their 100% grass-fed, no antibiotics or hormones added Angus-cross cattle. Shares will be delivered to dropoff sites in Tyler, Lindale, or Dallas or direct to your door once per month for a small fee and can be conveniently billed on a monthly basis. You can join anytime during the season and charges will be prorated. CSA members also receive first choice for rarer products such as lamb, turkeys, and artisan and cured meats and a 5% discount off all retail prices (excluding eggs) when added to their order through Lonesome’s webstore, which is available to members. Sign-up and be part at csa.farmigo.com/join/ pineywoodsfarmalliance/fall2016. Hiking and More:

East Texas Shows Its Best Colors This Fall By Holli Fourniquet If there’s one thing Tyler is known for, it’s for the area’s natural beauty. Nestled serenely in the piney woods of East Texas, the area offers some pretty great landscapes for the outdoorsy types. According to a recent study, most of us are spending half as much time outside as compared to only 20 years ago. It claims that doing outside activities such as hiking is good for the mind, body, and soul. The research showed that hiking clears your head, makes you more creative, boosts your focus, and recharges your mind’s battery. With temperatures getting lower by the day, it’s the perfect time to get out of the air conditioning and get back outside again. New adventures await you! Many people don’t know that Tyler is home to more than 1,000 acres of parkland comprised of 27 city parks, and that doesn’t even include the Tyler State Park! Hikers from all over the region enjoy the area’s ample places to explore, ranging in all intensity levels. Perhaps the best place for nature hikers to start is at one of Texas’ most popular State Parks: Tyler State Park. The park is located just north of the city limits and stretches over 985 acres. It is known as a tranquil haven in the pines, rich with history and recreational opportunities. The park features 100-foot tall trees, nature, camping, and a cool 64-acre spring-fed lake, not to mention the 13 miles of trails. The lake was just listed on “Tour Texas” as one of the top swimming holes in Texas. The Tyler State Park’s trails vary from easy to challenging, but each trail promises beautiful scenery amongst some of the largest pines in East Texas. The Trails cross several different forest types and offer amazing views you can’t see anywhere else. As you hike along the trails, this area is also the perfect place for bird watching with more than 200 species of birds identified at the park,

and it is home to a number of East Texas animals, including whitetailed deer, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, reptiles, armadillos, opossums, and more. Tyler State Park also offers several educational classes with various topics including wilderness survival, birding, snake encounters, and other important information one needs to know when hiking. If you’re looking for a great “staycation” location this is it. Tyler State Park has campsites and cabins for those hikers who want to stay. Make a weekend out of the trip and try several different hiking trails. For more info on the Tyler State Park go to tpwd.texas.gov/ state-parks/tyler. For hikers wanting to stay more within the city limits, the city of Tyler offers more than 1,000 acres of parkland. Walking and hiking trails are very popular within several of these parks. These parks are a great introduction to hiking. Plus, they offer other attractions, events, and services that can’t be beat. Faulkner Park, located at 410 W. Cumberland Rd., is a great place to begin. This park offers a scenic nature hiking and biking trail. The trail is a loop trail along which you might spot beautiful wildflowers and local wildlife. Dogs on a leash are more than welcome to join you along this trail. Faulkner Park also offers picnic areas, a fishing pond, and a sprayground to enjoy. Rose Rudman Park and Southside Park are two great trails for beginners. The two parks have concrete walking trails that connect making the entire length of the trail about 2.5 miles long. This is a great setting for walking or jogging. The trails take you through the parks and into the woods via a couple of beautiful bridges.

A lot of the trail is shaded, which makes this a great place to visit all year round. Some of the trail follows along a creek that is a popular hangout for wildlife in the area. Bring your camera because there are also some great photo opportunities along this trail. Rose Rudman meanders along side Donnybrook Ave. and Shiloh Rd. If you are trying to think of a place somewhat out of the ordinary, you might try Noble E. Young Park. The Noble E. Young Park is mostly known for the skate park and is one of Tyler’s most popular parks. Area skaters and bikers like to take advantage of the fun skate ramps in the park. The park also offers hiking and biking trails. This is the one place in Tyler you can bring your skateboard and your hiking shoes and enjoy all the park has to offer. For more info on go to tylerparksandrec.com. No matter where you decide to hike in Tyler one thing is for sure: Tyler has what you are looking for. Tyler offers challenging hikes as well as hikes for beginners. All of the hikes are family-friendly, accessible, educational, and relaxing. This fall, get off the couch and explore the nature in your own backyard. Recharge your batteries in one of the most gorgeous places in Texas. You won’t regret it. Classic Rock 96.1 Rocks Out:

Rockers, Riders & Ribs: Longview is Ready to Rumble

‘Rock the Square’ Comes to Downtown Tyler If God gave rock and roll to us, He’s blessing us once again as downtown Tyler prepares for yet another all-day dose of rock with Rock the Square 2016, Saturday, October 15th starting at 1pm. Concerts begin at 5:30pm. And who will be rocking the brick streets this year? None other than Foghat, Blue Oyster Cult, and Stephen Pearcy of Ratt! That’s right! Get ready to burn out the day with three rockin’ bands, ice cold beer, hot food, and a legendary classic car show from R.G. Car Show Productions with more than 100 cars - all courtesy of Classic Rock 96.1FM. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Heart of Tyler.

Foghat

The headliner this year is legendary Foghat! Foghat’s live performance shows are why the band is still around today and why they will be able to keep on rockin’ as long as they want. This band truly is timeless. Constant touring is part of their DNA and the band just loves to play. Their live show is as intense as ever with the incredible energy and musicianship that one would expect and hope for

also came away from one studio $1,500 lighter with nothing whatsoever to show for it, but that’s a different story for a different time. Other than that, just to keep adding fans to the family and expand our reach geographically. Johnny: What has been your best memory so far as TMF? What has been your biggest challenge? TMF: Wow, that’s tough, because we shared a lot of experiences over the past several years. Maybe the best is not one single instance, but the sum of those moments when it just “clicked” with a crowd. When they are moving as one and you see the majority singing along, knowing the words to something we wrote that’s the best. Finding new venues that appreciate our unique sound is always a challenge locally, which is strange because it’s not “weird” or anything. It’s just not top 40 country or classic rock covers. Aside from that, the whole recording thing is always a thorn. Johnny: What experience are you hoping the first time listener takes away from a TMF show? TMF: Our music has many layers to it, and we want people to appreciate the songs on at least one of those levels, but hopefully all. Nick’s lyrics are great stories with great messages, and we hope that someone can take something away with them from that. We also work hard to make it very sonically appealing, again with the layers thing, but we hope that they can appreciate that as well. We also rock the “you know what” out, and we hope that’s just flat out a good time for everyone. If we can connect with people on at least one of those levels, we’re doing well. If we can find someone for whom it clicks on all three levels, that’s when it’s special for them and us as well. Upcoming Shows: • October 8th – Great Raft Brewing, Shreveport, Louisiana (Multi-band show for the venue’s three year anniversary) • October 21st – Rockers, Riders & Ribs KickOff Party – Cajun Steamer, Longview Texas, headlining kickoff party for festival with openers White Trash Wannabees and Stink Bait • October 22nd – Sulphur Springs Texas, Hopkins County Civic Center Auditorium with Sulphur Springs own Hannah Kirby of “The Voice” • November 25th – Stanley’s Famous Bar-BQ, Tyler For more info on The Mansion Family and to hear samples of their music, go to Facebook via @mansionfamily or soundcloud.com/ kasey-brown-443687765.

from a seasoned band with such a long musical history, and they are bringing their fans along for the ride. 2016 finds them ready to release a great new album called “Under the Influence,” which they’ve had a terrific time recording along with some special guests and old friends.

Blue Öyster Cult

Spanning three decades, Blue Öyster Cult has a long and storied history. The band got its start in the late ’60s on Long Island, New York, as the Soft White Underbelly, but each member had been involved in bands previously in high school and college, before ending up in the “right place at the right time” to create the beginnings of Blue Öyster Cult. Long tiem fans will love to see the group reunited!

Progressively Carrying the Metal Torch By Johnny Griffith I have a confession to make. I play in a club friendly, easily accessible, party band that plays a lot of top-40 country, classic rock, and funk, but my heart is still back in the late 70’s to mid-80’s progressive rock bands like Pink Floyd, ELP, Yes, Rush, Queensryche, and later, Dream Theater. Coming from a background of classical music, the sweeping compositions, intelligent lyrical content, and technical proficiency of the “Prog-Rock” genre captured me in ways that other music never did. Born of the late 60’s psychedelic rock genre in Britain, prog-rock reached its pinnacle of mainstream popularity by the early 80’s with the expansive structure and instrumental nature of the songs not being radio friendly. However, fans of the genre have continued their support over the years, spawning new generations of musicians willing to take up the torch and lend their own voice to the chorus. Local prog-rock band Bibeau is one of the newest bands making waves in the genre right here in East Texas. Formed in 2009 by brothers Robin and Peyton Bibeau, sons of transplanted New Orleans native and veteran music exec Paul Bibeau, the band has already made their mark on the scene locally, regionally, and globally with a growing international fan base, a YouTube channel with thousands of views, and several positive reviews in industry magazines. With a full slate of shows coming up as well as work and school, these guys are constantly moving forward at a breakneck pace. They graciously sat down to give us a chance to learn more about Bibeau for the EGuide readers. Johnny: Give me the backstory on how the band started. Bibeau: Our dad has been in the record business for years, so we were raised around rock stars and music. When we were younger, he owned Spitfire Records (Black Label Society, Dio, Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, Danzig, etc.), and he plays guitar, so no matter where we lived - New York, New Orleans, or Whitehouse, Texas - we had music rooms with drums, guitars, amps, and records everywhere. Peyton would climb on the drum kit and bang away as a baby, and I (Robin) would gravitate to the guitars. When we were old enough, our dad taught us how to play, and he played bass with us in what became the first version of Bibeau. We posted our first video in February 2010 on YouTube featuring songs from Rush, Van Halen, Free, and The Beatles. We played our first show at American Band Idol later that year, and my friend Sara Smith came to the show. We started working with her and writing our first songs, and we played festivals and renaissance faires. At that point, the band wanted to find a singer because we were basically an instrumental power trio. Johnny: How was the process of adding additional members to get your current lineup? Bibeau: It was a tough process, but definitely worth the effort. It took what seemed like an eternity to find a singer. We posted on Craigslist, put flyers in music stores, and auditioned a few singers, but no one had the vocal range we were looking for. We wanted a powerful singer, male or female, with range. We also considered adding a second guitarist to build the guitar harmonies. We finally found a singer and second guitarist after we played a benefit at Click’s Live in Tyler. Both musicians had promise, but there wasn’t a good connection there, so just a few days before opening for John 5 from Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie, we found ourselves once again needing a vocalist and guitarist. We talked to Alan Benek Hernández on guitar and Drew Theiring on vocals about sitting in as guests for the John 5 show, and they learned the songs after just two practices. Our bass player Sara Smith left the band for 16 • EGuideMagazine.com

college, but she’s always a friend whom we all love. However, that left us with another hole in the lineup. Our new bassist, Chris Ray, came to Bibeau from a working connection with our first singer. Chris is an amazing musician. We feel that working with great musicians has helped us grow our audience and gain attention in many places we still can’t believe. Johnny: Where is everyone from? Bibeau: Everyone is from east Texas with the exception of Peyton and me (Robin). We were born in New York and lived in New Orleans in 2004-2005 until Hurricane Katrina showed up. We stayed in east Texas and moved into a house in Whitehouse after losing nearly everything in the storm. We have been here 11 years now, and we love the area. We all have roots here now, having met new friends and fellow musicians, and we would like to help grow the music scene here. Johnny: Who would you say were your biggest musical influences individually and collectively? Bibeau: Alan Holdsworth for me (Robin). Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Rush, Yes, Dream Theater, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Dokken for Alan. Iron Maiden for Chris. Led Zeppelin for Drew, and Simon & Garfunkel for Peyton. We have a profound respect for the greats of yesterday and the developing talents of today. We all have different tastes and influences in music, and it is represented in our songs and overall sound. You can hear the influence during a live set; we perform mostly our original material. While our influences are in there somewhere, we all feel that we manage to have very much our own unique sound. With the world being the way it is, we all feel that music now should be intellectually challenging and entertaining and in no way, dumbed-down. We also did not want to be derivative of the Dream Theater style of modern progressive music. It’s been done to death. We listen to TesseracT, Sky Harbor, and other great new bands, but it is important that we create our own thing. Johnny: What has been your most memorable moment as a band so far? Bibeau: Hands down, our show in Baton Rouge. The crowd’s reaction was overwhelming, and we had a hard time loading our equipment in the parking lot because we were swamped by happy people. That’s what it is all about. Having your songs make an impact live. It’s becoming a trend at our shows, and we are playing just about everywhere in the south now. Johnny: What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Bibeau: Time. We all work or go to school. We are weekend warriors, and we need as much

time as possible to write and refine our original songs. Johnny: You recently released your first single and supporting video, how was that process, and what did you learn that will help you moving forward? Bibeau: We recorded “Mark This” in our home studio, and we sent it out to Luke Garrigus at Blackroom Studios. We were blown away with his mastering, and we have decided to record the new record at his studio in Georgetown, Texas, early next year. As for the recording, we have learned a lot about recording through trial and error. Everyone laid down their respective tracks so smoothly, it was impressive. As a band, we have worked hard to become extremely tight. The “Mark This” video was a phenomenal experience, thanks to director Justin Mosley. We opted for a dystopian, post apocalyptic sci-fi themed video. Justin Mosley directed the movie “Devil’s Deal,” which was distributed by Lionsgate, and he happens to live in Tyler. We really wanted to work with him! Justin is incredible at what he does, and he worked to help us add a metaphorical theme for the video. Metal may seem scary, but it unites like-minded people into a community. We also wanted to use elements of our crop circle logo and our voodoo theme mixed in within the storyline. We wanted a metal video reminiscent of the heyday of MTV because not very many bands do that anymore. 60,000 Youtube and 20,000 Facebook views later, it is still finding traction. Johnny: You guys developed and released a mobile app for the band. How well was that received, and did it help with the outreach and marketing? Bibeau: It came out before this new lineup, and it has helped. Honestly, we need to refresh it and rework a campaign to promote it more. We are very active promoting the band via ReverbNation, BandCamp, Number One Music, as well as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and now, SnapChat. Johnny: What are your goals for 2017 and beyond? Bibeau: We have a major event to kick off the new year with an absolute legend of the guitar: Ace Frehley of KISS, who will be playing at Click’s Live in Tyler. We’ll be opening for him! We also hope to record our debut record in February/March and release the record on Fade to Silence Records in the summer. Then we tour! If you’re a fan of prog-rock or just metal in general, be sure to catch Bibeau locally while you still can. Their star is rising, and these guys aren’t content with the status quo. I look forward to an exciting future for Bibeau as they

house in Edom will be on October 22nd featuring Jacob Johnson. Hailing from South Carolina, Jacob has long been considered the Sinatra of neo-acoustic folk funk who attacks his guitar like a man possessed. Samples of Jacob’s music can be found on his website at www.jacobjohnsontunes.com or through a link on the “Concert Calendar” page of The Old Firehouse website at www.theoldfirehouse.net. The concert series continues on November 5th with local East Texas favorites Adler & Hearne. From Texas’ upper east side, awardwinning performing songwriters Lynn Adler and Lindy Hearne (self-proclaimed “organic song farmers”) tour nationally, serving up seasoned original songs mixed with fresh harvests of homegrown music in a spirited and soulful genre they define simply as “Texas folk,” with subtle jazz and blues overtones. In concert, Adler and Hearne blend their voices and instruments in a spirited signature sound that reflect their true second-nature connection through song. Their concerts are always a sellout. The series continues on November 19th with Dana Hubbard, who has been described as “a cross between Bruce Cockburn and Jorma Kaukonen.” Danny Schmidt finishes out the calendar year on December 3rd with his return engagement. Named to the “Chicago Tribune’s” 50 Most Significant Songwriters in the Last 50 Years, Austin-based singer/songwriter Danny Schmidt has amassed a cult following for his stunningly poetic, poignant imagery. In 2017, Tim Grimm and the Family Band will perform on January 7th; Karen Mal on February 4th; Crystal Yates on February 25th; Melissa Greener on March 11th; and Kipyn Martin on April 8th. Admission for concerts are $12 in advance and $15 at the door, and events are on Saturday beginning at 7:30pm with doors opening early so the audience can enjoy coffee and desserts that are always available. The Old Firehouse is an intimate, smokefree and alcohol-free “Coffeehouse” which has made a name for itself by bringing national folk musicians and their all-original music to Edom’s unique listening room and stage. Info can be found at www.theoldfirehouse.net or by phone at 903-852-ART1 (2781).

having a bad day.” However, becoming a professional artist is not an easy task. Briana knows it takes a lot of hard work, dedication, money, and time to be an accomplished artist. One has to work to get pieces out for the world to see and to set up booths for shows. There is a lot of blood, sweat, and tears in everything artists do. “You just have to make time, find ways of funding, and don’t stop working or promoting. The more exposure, the better,” she recommends. Briana feels a connection to artists like Andy Goldsworthy (British sculptor and environmentalist producing organic sitespecific sculptures) for his views of the natural world and Shahzia Sikander (Pakistani artist working in drawing, painting, installation, and performance art) because of her layered works in different media and her intricate processes. Briana advises, “I will say to all the art students, be thankful for the space, tools, and peers you have because it becomes very hard once you are out of school to keep up your same pace. This last year has been extremely tough on my art side of life. I bought a house, got married, and am just now getting settled enough to where I can even think about making artwork again. That was almost a whole year I’ve been out of the game. I definitely miss having studio space and all the discussions with my peers about art. Now with my coworkers, the people I see every day, if I try to talk art or explain my work, they think I’m a hippie.” “With the organic anti-beat box band you just might slam dance.” – Chili Peppers For more info about Briana Sutton Art you can find her on Facebook or go to brianasutton.com.

Briana (Sutton) Clark : Organic Anti-Beat Box Band By Derrick White I believe in the virtues of living with original art. It is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. Having unique, imaginative artwork in your home is a treasured gratification. There is pronounced inspiration in discovering new things and absorbing people’s processes and techniques, especially if you are an artist yourself. Our home is filled with art by East Texas contemporary artists, and this is a great benefit to me, my family, and friends. My walls are not adorned with generic, mass produced, commercial garbage from the local chain craft store. The art my family gets to experience every day is real, personal, and handcrafted. Two of the pieces in our art collection are Briana (Sutton) Clark’s watercolor paintings (one largescale and one small-scale), and I am proud to own them. I love organic shapes, natural forms, watercolor washes, and multi-layered compositions. In my opinion, no one does this as well as Briana. “I am an East Texas artist. I do many things including my own artwork, murals, portraits, custom paint jobs, refurbishing furniture, and more,” states the artist. Briana Clark earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a Masters of Fine Art degree, both from the University of Texas at Tyler. She attended Tyler Junior College in 2005-2006. While in graduate school, Briana taught drawing and helped with a mural class. Her artwork is in permanent collections at two Capital One Financial buildings in Texas. She currently works for People’s Telephone Cooperative in marketing. “I have been able to use my artistic knowledge to give some fresh ideas to the company. I had to learn to use Photoshop for my position, which was pretty hard for me since my brain works better hands-on and not so much with computers. Now I know the program and have been able to do some really cool projects. They also let me use my artistic abilities for party decorating, props, t-shirt designs, poster designs, etc., which is fun,” Briana says. She also works doing window and sign painting for area businesses. She is about to start on a mural project for downtown Quitman as part of their town center revamping. “Art has taught me you don’t have to be perfect, and it is okay to explore. It has brought me calmness, clarity, and a new way of seeing the world. When I begin to feel like the world is ugly, and get tired of all the news and terrible things going on, art helps me focus more on the rare beauties all around us rather than falling into the black hole society creates,” explains the artist. “Life is grand in the land of lands. The mind does boggle, the mind expands,” lyrics from the song ‘Organic Anti-Beat Box Band’ by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Briana’s favorite media is anything water-based (watercolor, acrylic, inks), but she likes to mix pen, marker, pencil, and

Nineteen original works of art by eleven artists will be on display in this juried show until October 31st. “This exhibit is about cinematography-inspired images with lots of imagination that creates real or imagined movie posters, complete with real or imagined stars - really anything from true reproductions and remakes of movie posters to imagined movies with you as the star will be on exhibit.” Gallery Main Street features a new exhibit of original art approximately every eight weeks. Each exhibit opens with a Saturday evening reception starting at 5:30pm and features music, an opportunity to meet the artists, refreshments, and more. Someone in London is killing off prostitutes and leaving quite a trail that Foster begins to connect to the same person. This “Wall Street Journal” and “USA Today’s” number one best seller is quite a genre switch from Bryndza’s usual romantic comedy novels and takes a hard look at the privileged lives and attitudes of a wealthy London family.

Back on the job after a hiatus from her last case that resulted in Foster’s husband’s death, Erica is having to overcome not only feelings of guilt and loss, but also face a group of peers that aren’t quite sure she’s ready to be back at work. While you think you might have the end of this book figured out, be forewarned that nothing in this book is what it seems to be. With as many twists and turns as a country road, this plot is about as complex as they come. This book is full of brilliantly created, realistic, solid characters and great dialogue. This book is absolutely riveting and full of more intrigue than you usually find in a debut novel. Bryndza has done a great job creating a character that will be able to hold her own through many more adventures in his series, and I hope he plans on several. Support a Great Cause October 20th-22nd For more than 46 years the volunteer members of the Smith County Medical Society Alliance have sorted, labeled, shelved, and organized donated books for their two sales each year. The sales, each spring and fall, last only three days. This is the Alliance’s chief fundraiser, with 75% of net proceeds going to health career scholarships and 25% to Alliance-related community health projects. This fall’s Book Fair will be held Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, October 20th, 21st and 22nd, 8am-6pm at 2004 Broussard (off DC Drive) in Tyler. The Book Fair was conceived in 1968 with the first sale taking place in 1969. The first few sales were in different locations. Then in 1975, A.E. Dennis, a landowner and businessman, proposed that the Alliance buy a building to put on a piece of property that he would donate. The physicians donated the money for the building. The Alliance outgrew the much loved small “red and white candy striped” building on DC Drive, and it was sold to purchase a new larger building around the corner on 2004 Broussard Street. The building on Broussard houses thousands of books and provides a much more comfortable shopping experience – wider aisles, better lighting, larger check out area, and all books are now located inside. They also have a larger, newly paved parking lot for easier access and accessibility. More than $700,000 from the book sale proceeds have been awarded for health career scholarships at the University of Texas at Tyler (UT Tyler) and Tyler Junior College (TJC). A $25,000 Presidential Scholarship has been endowed at each school for a number of years, and a $25,000 Masters in Nursing was endowed at UT Tyler as well. More recently, the Alliance donated $10,000 to the nursing school at the Robert M. Rogers Health and Science Center at TJC. In addition, scholarships are awarded each year to students that are studying in the health
