October 20th - Out of the Darkness Walk - Come walk to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s efforts in lowering the suicide rate by 20% in 2025. All donations will go directly to this organization. This will be held at Rose Rudman Park in Tyler. Meet at the New Copeland area.

A Taco Throwdown & Film Festival

On the second Saturday of every month, people from all over converge in Downtown Tyler for Hit the Bricks. Downtown Tyler will be bursting with family fun, entertainment, music, food, history tours, art, and, of course, the chance to check out a great locally-owned restaurant, bar, or retail establishment.

Saturday, October 13th will feature the firstever Tyler Taco Throwdown, Downtown on the square as well as the popular Downtown Tyler Film Festival.

Tyler is home to some great tacos, but who will bring home the title of Best Taco? We all have our favorites and on October 13th, tacos from ten competitors will be put to the test.

You will have a chance to purchase tacos from all the competitors. Bring your chairs and blankets and enjoy Downtown Tyler with your family and friends.

There will be early entrance for VIP’s with tickets at 11am and free public entrance 12 noon-3pm.

Vendors will be determine taco prices. Cash is highly encouraged.

There will also be t-shirts for sale for $10!

After the Throwdown, The Garage Bar will be hosting an After Party. The VIP Party starts at 3pm and the Official After Party starts at 4pm which is open to the public.

While you’re in Downtown Tyler enjoying one of the special events, be sure to check out some of the Downtown businesses. Make sure to stop into one of Downtown’s boutique shops.

These stores offer unique items that can only be found in Downtown Tyler.

Visit one of the Downtown family friendly attractions including Goodman-Legrand Home & Museum, Cotton Belt Depot, Discovery Science Place, Liberty Hall, Smith County Historical Society, Gallery Main Street, or the Tyler Public Library.

For dinner, sink your teeth into one of the local Downtown eateries. Find anything from cheap tacos and bar food to fine dining and everything in between. There’s no excuse to leave hungry with all of the dining options because in Downtown you can have your cake and eat it too.

There is free parking Downtown for Hit the Bricks in the Fair Plaza parking garage (located right beside ETX Brewing Co. and across the street from The Foundry Coffee House), free parking on the square, or free valet parking at Rick’s and Jack Ryan’s after 4pm.

Hit the Bricks is an event you won’t want to miss! Each one will be unique and different, but rain or shine, cold or hot, there will always be something to do in Downtown on the second Saturday of every month.

History Mystery Night at the Museum at Smith County Historical Society Come to Smith County Historical Society’s

WWI Armistice Centennial Celebration and enjoy the interactive Mystery hunt at the museum in the Carnegie Library Building.

Utilize QR codes, examine archived documents, search old maps, and transcribe handwritten letters to solve your clues.

You will also enjoy finger foods and drinks, socializing with our WWI “live” characters, and a theatrical trumpet celebration on the stage of the historic Payne auditorium.

There are over 40 fine event venues within a 30-mile radius of Tyler. On Saturday, November 10th, venue and wedding professionals from East Texas will be promoting Tyler as your perfect wedding destination on the brick streets of Downtown.

Visit Tyler, an organization dedicated to promoting Tyler to visitors, will sponsor the “Bridal Expo on the Bricks” during the November 10th “Hit the Bricks” event.

The “Bridal Expo on the Bricks” will feature East Texas venues and businesses dedicated to making your wedding day dreams come true. More

than 50 exhibitors will be set up under tents and inside businesses 11am-3pm.

This event is free to the public. Purchase a ticket for a chance to win one of the many prizes offered by exhibitors during the event. The ticket is needed to enter Liberty Hall at 3pm for the Grand Prize Presentation/Bridal Fashion Show presented

by Brooke & Bre Bridal Boutique. Online ticket sales are currently available on easttexasweddingevents.com.

This fun event will help the bride-to-be that lives out of town and locally meet many businesses and venue exhibitors all in one location.

This inaugural event will include food trucks, travel agencies, and photographers. There will be caterers with samples, venue and hotel specials, live music, DJ’s, photo booths, and lots of fun and games from merchants with products or services that the bride will desire for her wedding.

Tyler has a variety of wedding venues that are ready to delight the bride-to-be with a wide variety of venue styles and rates. Tyler venues are budget friendly too!

Take a tour of Jack Ryan’s Steakhouse, the new premier wedding venue in downtown Tyler.

Enjoy a champagne toast and hors d’oeuvres as you consider them to host your custom wedding event.

A shuttle bus, provided by Ellison’s Classic Coach, will take you to visit the GoodmanLeGrand House to see it setup for a wedding.

Step back onto the shuttle and travel to Callynth Photography Studio located on the square.

FallAsFestival Guide 2018 weather begins to cool off, the fall festivals

will begin. There is a lot of variety and fun planned for all ages!

October 11th-14th: Downtown Tyler Film Festival, Downtown Tyler The Downtown Tyler Film Festival is a celebration of storytelling through film in East Texas. They accept and show short films from all around the world, but have a special fondness for local independent works. Films will be shown each day at Liberty Hall, 103 E. Erwin St., Downtown Tyler.

October 13th14th: Edom Art Festival, Edom For more than 46 years, the small artists’ community of Edom in East Texas has hosted a festival for working artists presenting its talents to an appreciative audience of gifters and collectors. The festival is the premier art show in East Texas. High quality art, fine crafts, live music, and great food and wine fill the festival grounds behind the resident artists’ studios on the one main street in town, Farm to Market Road 279.

This year’s festival takes place from 10am-5pm each day. Admission is free. Visit the resident artists’ studios on the main street, for which Edom is well known. October 18th21st: Texas Rose Festival, Tyler The 85th Texas Rose Festival will be held on October 18th-21st, with “Rock the Rose” as its theme. Amanda Elaine Hiles will reign as the 2018 Texas Rose Festival Queen. She attends Tyler Junior College and is a member of the Apache Belles. The 2018 Duchess of the Texas Rose Festival will be Ann Caswell Ferguson, a student at Baylor University. The Rose Festival activities include the queen’s coronation at the Cowan Center on October 19th, and the Rose Parade on October 20th. Madison is a hands-on family man, cook, producer, and storyteller with roots in London, Jamaica, and Detroit. Kids of all ages love the ride aboard the historic rails from the Rusk Depot to Texas State Railroad’s very own Pumpkin Patch. It’s a short 30-minute train ride with departure times at 10am and 1pm. All passengers, young and old, are encouraged to come attired in their Halloween finest.

The 90-minute layover at the Pumpkin Patch includes hayrides, spooky tunes, and other seasonal music. Tiny boos and ghouls also enjoy hopping in the bounce house and trick-ortreating on our very own “Trick or Treat Street.” Every child can pick out his or her own pumpkin to take home for jack-o-lantern creating. Delicious lunch items are available for purchase.

Prices are $15-$50 per ticket. Due to the popularity of this event, there are no discounts available. Please check out the calendar for dates and times of departures.

October 13th (2pm): Makerspace - Pumpkin Carving The Tyler Public Library’s Makerspace will be hosting a free Pumpkin Carving contest for all ages in the Makerspace Room. October 18th (7pm): Reel Talk, “Alien” The Tyler Public Library and Liberty Hall are excited to begin a new film series and club called Reel Talk, billed as “A book club, but for movies!”

Every third Thursday of the month at 7pm, Liberty Hall will show a movie and any interested movie goers can stay afterwards to discuss the film’s merits and flaws. The first film shown will be “Alien” on October 18th. Hammer & Stain East Texas: A Welcoming Space to Laugh & Create

By Barbara Greenbauer There’s a new place in town for all you creative DIY folks (also known as Do-It-Yourself) to build, stain, and paint to your heart’s content!

Hammer & Stain East Texas is the welcoming space for everyone to laugh, share, and create. You can literally take a raw piece of wood and in a few short hours, leave the building with a personallycreated, hand-crafted work of art that you will be proud to say you did with your own two hands.

Owner Kay Shubert is the vibrant, enthusiastic, and personal artist behind Hammer & Stain and she is the hands-on instructor who will walk you through your project from beginning to end.

Opened in February 2019 in Bergfeld Center beside The Egg & I, the space is large and inviting, and with other projects lining the walls, is in itself food for thought.

“We have hundreds of stencil ideas for people to start with,” explains Kay, “but you are welcome to come in with an idea or concept and we will make it happen. The world of Pinterest has opened everyone’s eyes to projects that are easy and fun.”

You and your friends, family, co-workers (or any other combination you can come up with) are welcome guests and the space is yours as you grab your wood and a seat at the huge, wide worktables. A private workshop is a great time to bond, have fun, and not worry that you are not artsy or can’t handle a brush.

All materials and tools are included and you will get step-by-step instruction as you work, eat, laugh, and party down. You also get to choose your style of music as you get creative.

On the night I visited, it was a private workshop that had been booked by co-workers

from Christus Trinity Mother Frances ObGyn Clinic. It’s the second visit for most and they have already set up their food and drinks at the back table and are singing and dancing to the 80’s music as they begin to create.

Some of the ladies are checking out the endless selection of colors and glitter on “Bertha,” the paint caddy that Kay built that dominates the back of the space.

The projects are diverse and unique; some ladies are creating signs for wedding gifts and Christmas presents and seasonal topics are a big hit. “We are getting really busy with Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas projects,” Kay said.

Projects can range from single plank boards to benches, headboards, or pillows.

Shubert pre-builds most of the bigger items which have included sofa and buffet tables and kitchen islands.

It’s a really fun, laid-back vibe as the group laughs, compares projects, eats, drinks, and chats.

You can bring in your own choice of food and beverages (including alcohol) and make the space your own. Hammer & Stain hosts and books private parties for 10 people with the entire space able to accommodate up to 50.

Hammer & Stain has been DIY central to all kinds of groups: bridal showers, birthday parties, bachelorette parties, date nights, and corporate team-building adventures.

Dr. Charla Spencer, having a great time with her co-workers from the ObGyn clinic, said, “It’s my first project and it’s actually décor for my home.” At a table behind Dr. Spencer, Barbara Schwab, an ultrasound technician, was hard at work designing a personalized wedding gift. Barbara said, “We are a really close-knit supportive group but having the opportunity to have fun together and go home with a neat handmade project is a bonus.”

“I love meeting and helping all kinds of folks,” said Shubert. “We have even had Boy Scouts troops come in to do kits that complete their badge work.”

No time to party? Hammer & Stain has got you covered with “Hammer on the Go.” They will bring everything to your location including tables

and chairs and all materials.

Shubert also has “make and take” kits that you can take home and finish at your leisure.

Tonight’s funfest at Hammer & Stain is winding down, but the finished artwork is being oohed and aahed over and pictures are being uploaded to Instagram and Facebook. The handcrafted pieces are heading out the door but the memories are going to last a long time.

The store is open Monday-Friday 9am-4pm for walk-in customers that want to sit and create in their space. Shubert also has special ladies nights with added goodies and surprises - there have even been karaoke parties!

The next Ladies Night coming up is scheduled for Thursday, October 18th. It is open to anyone!

Starting A ‘Wildfire’

Earlier this year we introduced you to Sean Berry, a local musician who has been making waves in East Texas and beyond. The son of country music artists John and Robin Berry, Sean has crafted his own sound which shines through clearly on his recent album release, “Wildfire,” a 7-track EP that became available on streaming platforms September 7th. Armed with a solid mix of songs penned

by Sean himself, “Wildfire” takes aim to satisfy with a wide range of solid tracks throughout the entire EP. From emotional anthems such as “Roller Coaster,” “Anomaly,” and the title track “Wildfire,” to the clever and quick-witted “First Generation Drunk” and “Damn You Miranda,” to the poignant “Trestle Days,” the release covers a wide range of emotions and almost gives you a sense of seeing the songs from the inside out.

Combining solid lyrics with quality production value and what seems to be a first-rate lineup of backing musicians, “Wildfire” is certainly worth a listen and will surely gain Berry some new fans.

I recently caught back up to Sean to get his take on the EP and a little of what went into it: Johnny: So it’s been a few months since we last spoke and the new album “Wildfire” recently released. How do you feel about the new album?

How has the response been so far?

Sean: I’m extremely proud of how the album turned out. Each of these songs was written to reflect an area of my life. It’s awesome to see them go from just a song I sing in my living room with an acoustic guitar to a full and finished product.

The response I’ve gotten has been incredible. It’s awesome to talk to people and find out which song is their favorite because they almost always say something different.

Johnny: What was different, in your mind, about this recording from any previous work you’ve done?

Sean: The only other recording experience I’ve had was when I first moved to Nashville. I cut a five-song EP, but I had only written two of the songs on the project. This album is so much different simply because I wrote all of the songs, six of the seven being by myself.

Johnny: The production quality is great on this album. Who did you work with in the studio on this release?

Sean: We cut the entire album on tape at “Welcome to 1979” in Nashville. Artists like Chris Stapleton, Billy Gibbons, Lady Antebellum, and a ton more have all worked in that studio. It was such a cool experience to record there. You walk in the studio and immediately feel like you’re in a different era. I had some incredible musicians that played on the record too. My brother, Caelan (23), is an incredible drummer and it was awesome to have him play on the record.

Johnny: You’ve got some great stories in these songs; where do you find most of your ideas come from?

Sean: All of these songs are real-life experiences, minus Miranda. I have gotten into some trouble, but I’ve never been arrested! With that being said, these songs stem from things I’ve dealt with whether it be relationships or something as simple as missing home. Every lyric is part of a different time in my life.

Johnny: Do you have a favorite song on this album? If so, which one and why?

Sean: Probably my favorite song on the record is “Wildfire.” Originally, it wasn’t my favorite but once I heard it for the first time after being mixed it blew me away. There’s just a lot of dynamic in the song. The intro and outro have a completely different feel. I also love that we did the solo on the organ and not the guitar. You don’t hear a ton of organ solos anymore and it fit the song very well.

Johnny: Your sound seems to be a good mix of Nashville and Texas. What would you say was the biggest influence on the direction this release took?

Sean: Honestly, I feel like my personality resonates with the Texas culture and that’s why we released it in more of a Red Dirt setting. In no way do I want to label myself as just a “Red Dirt” singer or just a “Nashville singer.” I believe that no matter the genre - the best music will always prevail. I don’t believe in genres as much as I believe in good music. I hope I’m able to resonate with all types of listeners with this project.

Johnny: Coming from a family with a strong musical history, did you enlist any of them for musical contributions to the album?

Sean: Absolutely. Both of my parents are listed as producers on the album. I’d be crazy not to want their thoughts and opinions especially since my Dad has been such a huge musical influence of mine. He’s the one that bought me my first guitar, a Fender Stratocaster, and got me listening to bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker Band, Allman Brothers, and so many other groups. He’s the reason I cling to Southern Rock ‘n Roll.

Johnny: What would you say the experience of this recording taught you that you’ll take forward into the next project?

Sean: “Keep it funky.” That’s what I told everyone while we were recording. Not necessarily meaning play funk but think outside of the box. I wanted this to have a different sound.

I wanted this project to be unique. I don’t think I reinvented the wheel with this album by any means, but I definitely think it’s different than a lot of music out right now, and that’s perfectly fine with me. I’m used to being on the outside looking in. I’m used to being the underdog. I prefer it that way and look at it as a way to keep growing and improving.

Johnny: Speaking of the next thing, what’s next on your radar for the back half of the year and into 2019?

Sean: Shows! Shows! Shows! Whether full band or acoustic - I don’t care. I just want to play as much as I can and have as many people hear this music as possible. I really believe these songs are relatable for a lot of different types of people. I know I’m not the only person to deal with heartache, hangovers, and missing home.

Like I said, so far the response has been great.

It’s pretty cool to be in the grocery store with my wife and have people come up to me, introduce themselves, and tell me that they love my music.

Those little moments mean so much to me. I look forward to where this music takes me in the future.

The 903 Music Fest: 10 Bands on 1 Stage in 2 Days

The 2018 903 Music Fest!

There will be 10 bands on 1 Stage in 2 days!

Music starts at 6pm on Friday, October 12th, and 12 noon on Saturday, October 13th. This new family and community focused event features a number of different musical genres performed by locally, nationally, and internationally-known artists.

Friday night’s headliner is Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band. There are few artists whose names are synonymous with one instrument and how it’s played in service to an entire genre than Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Utter the phrase “young blues guitarist” within earshot of anyone with even a cursory knowledge of the modern musical vanguard and the first name they are most likely to respond with will be Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

The Louisiana born axeman and songsmith has been selling millions of albums, throwing singles into the Top 10, shining a light on the rich blues of the past, and forging ahead with his own modern twist on a classic sound he has embodied since his teens. He met Stevie Ray Vaughan at 7, shared the stage with New Orleans legend Bryan Lee at 13. As an adult, he continues to create genre-defining blues-infused rock n’ roll.

Also, Casey James and Sam Hyman Band will perform. Music performances begin at 6pm.

Saturday night’s headliner is Clint Black.

Prolific singer-songwriter Clint Black has long been heralded as one of Country music’s brightest stars. His many talents have taken him even

further, as Black has transcended genres to become one of the most successful artists in all the music industry. To date, Black has written, recorded and released more than 100 songs, a benchmark in any artist’s career. An astounding one-third of these songs eligible for major single release also achieved hit song status at Country radio, while more than 20 million of his albums have been sold worldwide. While it’s wellknown that Black is an accomplished singer and guitarist, people may be surprised to learn that he is also proficient on drums and harmonica.

Tusk, The Molly Ringwalds, Dagnabbit, Chad Cook Band, Akeem Kemp, and The Mansion Family will be on stage as well. Music begins at 12 noon.

This will be held in Downtown Longview at Methvin and Green Streets. This is a family friendly event and will be fun for all ages.

October 20th: Tony Ramey With music that reflects his real life, real people, and the landscapes shaping their destinies, Tony Ramey embodies the substantive American soul. His music doesn’t fit into any specific category - country, folk, or Americana - but based on previous audience reactions, whatever it is gets a standing ovation every time.

Tony Ramey grew up in West Virginia on Bluegrass and Bill Withers, found Willie, Waylon, Cash, and Kristofferson at 11 (who fueled an already fiery passion to write songs), then he heard Steve Earle whose songs convinced him to move to “Guitar Town” (Nashville) to hone his craft. He would eventually leave for Texas when the road called him out again.

With the release of his 11th album, Ramey has the respect of industry folk, and keeps growing his audience with his undeniable prowess as a singer/songwriter. His tour schedule and his passion for performing are evidence that he prefers the troubadour life-style. “We are thrilled to have him return as he always fills the house with happy listeners,” said Jeff Gottesman, owner of Old Firehouse.

East Texas Symphony Orchestra Concerts Richard Lee, music director and conductor of the ETSO continues the season with works representing the American canon of classical music, old (ie. baroque) music and new music.

November 10th (7:30pm) - ETSO Deconstructed - The ETSO is deconstructed for a concert that explores the many configurations of the orchestra. Four of the orchestra’s core violinists, led by concertmaster Mark Miller, are featured in a concerto by Antonio Vivaldi and Principal Oboist Sharon Lacey performs Marcello’s Oboe Concerto in C minor. The evening also features Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks.

The evening concludes with the full force of the ETSO performing Tchaikovsky’s diabolically challenging Francesca da Rimini.

Food Sola Bread Co.: Family At Its Finest

Don’t take my word for it, the smallest amount of research will reveal bread has been a staple of civilizations for thousands of years and entire economies have been built around the process which brings it from the fields to the market. The art of baking bread was something that was celebrated in homes for millennia - not just a means to sustain life, but as an opportunity to grow closer together and commune with one another during the process. Over the years that process has changed drastically with modernization and mechanization, circumventing much of the old processes which made bread more nutritional and accessible for all. Luckily for Tyler and the surrounding area, Blaine and Karin Davis, along with Tim and Lindsay, and John Patrick and Tommy Long (Karin’s brothers) had a dream to rekindle this process and the community it engendered in order to bring the art of baking bread to this area. In the process, they have created something special.

From humble beginnings in a backyard oven built in 2013 by the Davis-Long clan, they have managed to foster a sort of magic that manifests itself over and over again in each loaf of bread they bake. With hours of work, art, skill, and a little luck going into each loaf produced, there is a true artisan culture being fostered in every loaf of Sola Bread.

This meticulous craft has translated well into the community - to the point where March in 2018, Sola Bread Co. opened their very first brick and mortar location alongside the True Vine Brewing Co.’s new location in a partnership that seems as if it was made in Heaven.

I recently sat down with Blaine to get more of the story of Sola Bread Co. and what’s been going on in the bakery.

Johnny: Describe the moment when the light bulb came on with the idea to build a brick oven in your backyard which was essentially the genesis of Sola Bread Co.?

Blaine: Tim, Lindsay, Karin, and I were over at Tim and Lindsay’s house for dinner one night dreaming about how neat it would be to share the bread and food we loved with more people. Family is at the center of our lives and food is the vehicle by which we enjoy each other. I had been baking sourdough loaves in my dutch oven, one at a time, and I physically didn’t have enough hours to bake the number of loaves that friends and family wanted during the holidays and for events. I remember one Christmas Eve where I never went to bed so that I could finish baking the 12 loaves of bread that were needed for the following day. Something had to give.

So that evening, we decided that we needed more good bread in the world. We thought perhaps, that we could build the oven ourselves and cover the costs of building the oven by selling bread at the farmer’s market. It would be a great way to meet more people in the city we call home. My best friend in college had given me a book years before called “The Bread Builders,” which got me started on my bread journey. Half of the book is about the chemistry and biology of bread and the other half

is about wood-fired bread ovens.

There were basic instructions on how to build a bread oven, and so with lots of online research and phone calls to other bakers in the wood-fired industry, we began to build. Since then, that oven has baked over 10,000 loaves of bread.

Johnny: Was there ever that Noah’s Ark type moment where perhaps some people might have thought the idea was a bit crazy?

Blaine: If anything, we still think we’re crazy, but I also know that if we hadn’t followed this path we would have missed out on so many friendships, relationships, and opportunities to fall in love with the city of Tyler. Business is a risk, but so is a relationship. If you risk nothing, you gain nothing.

Personally, Wendell Berry has had a big influence on how I think about people, place, and economy.

Berry preaches the virtues of commitment to peace and love of people. Everything we make takes time, skill, and craft. But that also means that there is only so much we can accomplish, which is not a hindrance so much as freedom.

If there is one thing that bread can teach you, its that good things take time and are worth waiting for. I think that analogy plays out well with how we think about our place in this city: This place and its people are worth the time, attention, and craft that is required of deep and meaningful relationships.

Johnny: What were those early days like in the backyard, firing up the oven early in the morning or late at night when you were spending your time honing the recipes and art of bread making?

Blaine: Bleary-eyed, exhilarating, exhausting, maddening. For the past four years of my life, I have woken up at 2am every Saturday morning to bake the bread that y’all so graciously buy from us each week. I’ve learned to make friends with the stars.

It’s established a rhythm and ‘rootedness’ to my life as I’ve learned to dance with my oven. Each bake is different. Heat saturation levels of my oven are never quite the same, my bread is never quite proofed the same, so the variables keep me on my toes.

Every time I pull the door open on the oven I’m wondering to myself, “Is this going to be the perfect bake?” But to be honest, the baking is only the tip of the iceberg.

Johnny: Speaking of the art, Sola Bread Co. uses an older technique that mitigates a lot of the issues some people have with consuming bread, specifically the gluten. What initially drew you to this style of baking and how much do you think it has contributed to your success?

Blaine: For starters, I want to clarify that we suffer from a poverty of language when the only word we know for the style of bread I make is “sourdough.” I make naturally leavened bread which is VERY different from San Francisco sourdough. It is, well, sour…like vinegar. Our bread is lactic, tangy, and buttery. The interesting thing is that both are made from the exact same ingredients and process but are executed in a vastly different way.

What drew me to making bread was growing up in a great bread culture. I grew up in Sao Paulo,

Brazil where every neighborhood had its own bakery, butcher shop, market, and pizzeria. When I moved to east Texas, none of the things I loved to eat could be had, so I set out to learn how to make them all. I definitely think that the natural-levain process is essential to what we do at Sola. I think most of society’s health issues, which only emerged about a hundred years ago, are directly related to the process. Grain needs to be fermented to be properly digested by humans, and that is precisely what we do with our bread.

Johnny: So when you first fired up the oven back in 2013, were you able to envision a moment where this desire to make memories and grow community would lead to a brick-and-mortar location?

Blaine: Not at all! It’s bigger, better, and more amazing than anything we ever could have dreamed or chosen for ourselves. When we got started, we mostly thought that a brick and mortar would be part of our ten-year plan, vaguely out in the distance like a mirage. Our primary goal when we opened was to make the best bread possible and to establish a positive bread culture in Tyler. Then we expanded to our famous pizza nights in our backyard which allowed us to hone our craft with pizza, experiment with dough, and topping combos, and invite our newly acquired bread fans into our home to eat great food.

Frankly, the response and growth of our pizza nights is what pushed our vision forward. Through an act of sheer providence, we acquired the oven that is in our restaurant today. It sat in our father’s garage for a year and a half before we knew what to do with it. The opportunity with True Vine manifested itself and we knew we had to take it!

Johnny: When did the partnership with True Vine begin and how did that lead to Sola Bread building at that location?

Blaine: About 2.5 years ago we approached Ryan and Tracy Dixon - who have been dear friends and supporters of team Sola from day one - about setting up a pizza shack with the wood-fired pizza oven we had acquired over on their old Englewood property. When they acquired the Earl Campbell

Parkway property and shared their vision with us, we all realized that this was the opportunity we had been waiting for.

Johnny: Was there ever a time in those early years when you thought it would have been easier to do something else?

Blaine: I’m sure we’ve all had that thought at multiple times and will continue to do so over the months and years ahead. But “easy” isn’t the point of life. I believe in the “goodness” of our product and our work. Our mission isn’t just about food, it’s about people. It’s about getting folks to gather around and connect in a real way.

Johnny: What is next on the radar for Sola Bread Co.?

Blaine: We are just getting started! We’ve launched our restaurant with pizza taking the forefront of what we do, but this next year it’s our vision to expand our bread, pastry, and bakery operation. I’m excited to grow our equipment in order to expand our bakery. Part of our expansion goals includes a mobile brick oven so that we can bring the best-woodfired pizza in Tyler to a variety of locations and events. We look forward to the day when we can bring our pizza nights to backyards across the city!

the Tyler Parks and Recreation’s popular Movies in the Park series. This season marks the fourteenth year for the outdoor film series, recognized locally as a budget-wise, family-friendly way to enjoy pleasant fall evenings in Bergfeld Park’s amphitheater and Center Stage on a new 24’x12’ screen.

Talking Tales The Tyler Public Library and East Texas Storytellers’ are working together to provide a new ongoing program called Talking Tales. Every second Thursday at 5:30pm in the Taylor Auditorium, talented storytellers will regale patrons with folklore, legends, and lore from all around the world. Each month will have a theme, and with the program beginning in the spooky month of October, the first theme will be ghost stories.

Reel Talk The Tyler Public Library and Liberty Hall are excited to begin a new film series and club called Reel Talk, billed as “A book club, but for movies!”

This movie is part of the Rose Festival Arts and Crafts Fair.

All films are rated PG and free soft drinks will be provided by Tyler Beverages. Concessions will also be available for a fee. Visitors can bring a blanket, chairs, and picnic to enjoy the show.

“Without public and private support of Parks and Recreation programming, the show might not go on,” said Debbie Isham, special events/recreation manager. “The City must pay a licensing fee for the rights to show each movie. That’s why donations and sponsorships are so important. We started Movies in the Park in the fall of 2004 and we have shown 100 movies so far.”

Monetary support comes from a variety of sources, ranging from t-shirt sales, business sponsorships and entry fees for certain events.

The fall movie series is sponsored in part by Altra Federal Credit Union, a Friend of Bergfeld Park, HPAT and Heritage Land Bank.

The Pop Art style of Tyler Shelton

By Derrick White “Art has given me a sense of purpose and a sense I’m contributing to society in some way. I always felt like I had no place, art has given me a place,” states local artist Tyler Shelton. He continues, “I am a self-taught artist for the most part. I have taken a few classes here and there but never seemed to retain much new information from them. I have learned a lot from my mother Suzanne Shelton, who studied in France and graduated with a fine art degree and has taught art for the last 20 years. If I ever have questions or need guidance, I go to her and she is always very helpful.”

Tyler Shelton works in what are predominantly a colorful, pop art style creating powerful and captivating paintings, collages, photographs, and murals. He sometimes revisits prevailing, iconic images such as Elvis, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Mick Jagger, and Marilyn Monroe. His images become a clash of commercialism and expressionism juxtaposing familiar, recognizable images while expressing an emotional experience. Pop art is an art movement which began during the mid-1950s. The movement included imagery from popular, American consumer cultures, such as advertising, comic books, commonplace objects, Hollywood, and celebrities. It is also associated with the artists’ use of reproduction techniques and photography.

“I have experimented with many different styles and I’m always thinking of new aesthetics to achieve. Most of my pieces I would say are along the lines of abstract pop art or psychedelic pop art. I started out just painting intricate designs and trying to make them as clean and perfect as possible but I eventually drove myself crazy and lost interest in trying to make things perfect. Now a lot of my pieces are very expressive and sloppy which I enjoy more because I think it’s more honest in a sense, and often times quicker. Using a lot of colors like baby blue and mint green, elements where one looks at it and it

just seems fresh like a piece of spearmint gum,” explains the artist.

Tyler has increasingly become more interested in photography, specifically vintage portraits, grainy, nostalgic, and black and white.

He states, “I really enjoy the collage of photography and acrylic paint so I have been doing a lot of that recently. I have never been very computer savvy but I am getting a lot more experienced with Illustrator and Photoshop. When done right, it can look very professional and most businesses and local bands seek digital art more than paintings, so I feel like it is in high demand. I am practicing with spray paint a lot and I really love the application process and the textures it has to offer but I am not where I want to be with it yet.”

Tyler Shelton has won best in show at Gallery Main Street in Downtown Tyler and has recently completed a fun and colorful mural on the stairs at Caldwell Arts Academy certain to entertain and inspire the rug rats. He was also one of the participating artists on the mural at ETX Brewing Company. “I was always a very bad student and didn’t have much going for me when I graduated high school.

I started college and ended up dropping out very quickly. I decided to really focus on art and began to see I actually had a shot to make a living off of it. I would paint every day for about 8-12 hours or so for several years, I just let it consume me and I really grew very quickly and now at age 22, I am able to rely on income from my art. I’m not making a killing but I’m making a living and I see great things ahead in my career as an artist,” exclaims the artist. Adding, “I would say one of the best things art has brought to my life is confidence. My parents always made it very clear to me I needed to go to college and find a good, high-paying job to ensure my success in society. It’s not

Born in India, Ghuge is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Tyler.

Inspired by a blend of Indian henna designs and imagery from her previous medical profession, Ghuge’s work explores themes of community, time, and value.

“Apertures of the Mind” features handcarved woodblocks, ink and gouache drawings, and mixed media wall pieces. The exhibition also will include a site-responsive installation constructed out of woodblock-printed paper plates. Ghuge’s work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States. Her work can be found in public and private collections in India, the United Kingdom and the United States.

that I disagreed with them but I just had no idea what I was going to do about it. I wasn’t very responsible. I didn’t have many life skills, the only things I was actually good at were sports and art. But I stuck with art and it’s taken me places and made me grow as a person and guided me through life in a way and now I feel confident in myself and my future.”

Shelton concludes, “The most frustrating thing to me as an artist is frustration itself. I have noticed my creativity flow comes in waves.

I will come up with great ideas and be super motivated for months and I will be killing it, then out of the blue I will have no good ideas and be very unmotivated for months. It is very frustrating to get frustrated. Art shouldn’t be frustrating. You don’t make good art when you’re frustrated. Something I’ve learned is that art is fluid and it only makes sense creativity would be fluid too, so you can’t fight it you just have to ride it.”

Shelton is inspired by artists such as The Doors’ Jim Morrison, although not a visual artist. Tyler has read much of his poetry and lyrics and found it to be incredible. “He has inspired many pieces of mine and has inspired me to venture into other artistic fields such as music and literature,” says Shelton.

Tyler’s most obvious inspiration comes from superstar artist, Andy Warhol (American artist, director and producer and a leading figure in the pop art movement). Tyler states, “I really respect him as an artist because he didn’t do it the traditional way and he rewrote art itself. He really took art and did whatever he wanted and did it however he wanted.”

“Alternate Perspective” Opens at Gallery Main Street

Gallery Main Street’s fine art exhibit, “Alternate Perspective” will be hosting an opening reception at 5:30pm October 13th. This exhibit will explore the concept of “what one person sees is not always the same as what another’s view will be. Each person’s past, coupled with their personality, provides a multitude of opinions and with that alternative solutions. One person might see a cloud as just a cloud while another sees a face, both people have a different view of the same thing.”

Books Fall Reading at Its Best

By Gini Rainey “The Day John Died” by Christopher Anderson Who has not been fascinated by one of the most famous families in the United States?

But most times with that fame and notoriety comes tragedy, and that was very true of the Kennedy clan. This book not only speaks of the tragic day that John Kennedy, Jr., his wife, and sister-in-law lost their lives but also goes behind the curtain and dives into a lot of the motivating forces throughout his life. Often mostly thought of as the brave little soldier who saluted JFK’s casket as it passed by, that brave little soldier grew up to be a man his father would have been most proud.

Well written and extensively researched, Anderson (who also wrote “The Day Diana Died”) has provided the reader with a different and more human view of the Kennedys and what made them who they are. Anderson, in an easy to read and understandable style, took his many sources and resources and wove them into a very interesting and personal look at not only John’s, but also JFK’s, Jackie’s, Caroline’s, Bobby’s, and Ted’s lives and how they interacted with one another.

With a fairly impartial view of the Kennedy’s, Mr. Anderson has written a book that illustrates how much the Kennedy Dynasty not only impacted America but also the people who live there. This book is definitely well worth the read.

“Collusion of Angels” by Cynthia Boone Once again Ms. Boone has written a novel filled with characters you will come to love and a storyline that is filled with romance, selfredemption and, most of all, hope. When Kennedy Gray’s every-day, not so run-of-the-mill life ends with the tragic loss of her family and boyfriend, she is given a chance at a new beginning in the midwest on a farm inhabited by an order of nuns.

Under the nuns’ loving guidance, a very unhappy, self-loathing Kennedy slowly comes to terms with her past and, finding a new direction for her life, contemplates and enters a period of training and preparation as a novitiate to entering the Catholic order with the nuns who had virtually become her new family. What happens as she prepares for her future life in the convent changes her life in many positive ways. Meanwhile, as you would hope to have happened in a romantic novel, the stars and planets (along with the sisters) are aligning to bring together two star-crossed lovers.

If you’ve not read anything by Boone, this is a good one to start with. She has a wonderful way of creating characters that step off the pages and make you want to know them. While her stories are fictitious, they hold a certain amount of reality to which a lot of readers can relate. Definitely a page-turner, you won’t regret picking up this book.

2018 Genealogy Lock-In Program October 19th, 10am-8:30pm, the 2018 Genealogy Lock-In Program will be held at Smith County Historical Society, 125 S. College Ave., Downtown Tyler.

The 2018 Genealogy Lock-In Program is a cooperative effort to bring genealogical topics and speakers to a wider audience using modern technology through the Genealogy Network of Texas.

There will be eight 1-1 1/2 sessions featuring some of the nation’s best known genealogical speakers. This live webinar will be shown on a projection screen in the Smith County Historical Society Payne Auditorium. The events are as follows: • 10-10:50am: Don’t Forget the Ladies: A Genealogist’s Guide to Women and the Law will be presented by Judy G. Russell, JD, CG, CGL, The Legal Genealogist. In early America, women were all too often the people who just weren’t there: not in the records, not in the censuses, not on juries, not in the voting booth. The common law relegated women to “protected” – second-class – status and understanding how they were treated under the law provides clues to finding their identities today.

• 11-11:50am: Discovering Your Ancestors’ Land Holdings in the Texas GLO will be presented

by Kevin Klaus, Information Specialist Texas General Land Office (GLO) Archives and Records. Learn how maps can be used in genealogical research. This will be an overview of how to use the archival maps, the GIS mapping system, and the original land grant records to find your ancestors.

• 12 noon-1:30pm: Genealogy Basics: Getting Started on Your Family Tree will be presented by Carl Smith, Genealogy Librarian – Montgomery County Memorial Library System. Budding researchers will learn the basics they need to get started researching their family tree. We’ll cover the first steps to take to begin your research, starting with home sources. We’ll also cover the types of records that are useful for genealogical research.

• 1:40-2:40pm: Organizing and Preserving Photograph Collections will be presented by

Ari Wilkins, Library Associate at Dallas Public Library. We all have mounds of old unidentified family photos sitting in boxes. This lecture will offer step-by-step direction in organizing, preserving and cataloging these precious collections.

• 2:50- 3:50pm: Locating Ancestors on the Dawes Roll will be presented by Kathy Huber, Manager, Genealogy Center, Tulsa City County Library.

The Dawes Roll, created between 1898-1906 enrolled members of the Five Civilized Tribes living in Indian Territory.

• 4-5:15pm: Using Autosomal DNA Testing to Solve Genealogy Brick Walls will be presented

by Drew Smith, Assistant Librarian, Academic Services, USF Tampa Library, co-host Genealogy Guys Podcast. Examine several case studies that will demonstrate how autosomal DNA testing can be used to solve genealogy brick walls.

• 6:15-7:15pm: Breaking Brick Walls by Finding Living Cousins will be presented by Shelby Rowan, Family Historian, President of Texas Research Ramblers Genealogical Society in Bryan/ College Station. Perhaps a second or third or even a fourth cousin might have some information about your mutual great or great-grandparents that just might break one of your brick walls.

• 7:25-8:30pm: Census Sense: Clues & Conundrums for Intermediate Researchers will be presented by Patti Gillespie, B.A., M.S., Owner, Family Lines & Stories. This presentation focuses on federal census headings and codes, alternate federal censuses, state censuses, and their use in our research.
