September 22nd - Pineywoods Ultra - Run through deep East Texas pine forests on a scenic course underneath towering pines. This diverse, single track course, almost entirely underneath a canopy of 100-foot tall pine timber, will keep you captivated as you navigate rolling hills through rooty and pine needle conditioned trails. September 22nd - St. Gregory Fun Run & Carnival - Held at the 4100 Block of Easy St., next to The Chapel of Sts. Peter and Paul, this annual run features a 10K, 5K, 1 Mile and Kids Dash. The St. Gregory Fun Run is an annual run and carnival that helps promote family fun, health and fitness, and raises funds for St. Gregory Cathedral School. Your participation in the run helps St. Gregory’s PTO support necessary upgrades for the school, including technology, athletics, and advancements for education. 2nd Saturday, Hit the Bricks Grows Into More Community By Barbara Greenbauer If you’ve lived in Tyler a long while or a short time, you’ve probably heard the naysayers pontificate that there’s nothing going on in Tyler. The Chamber of Commerce and Visit Tyler are all about proving those folks wrong with the excitement happening Downtown every 2nd Saturday of the month. Whether you walk, drive, bike, or take public transportation, just get yourself and your family Downtown and have a unique experience right here in our town. Downtown business and attractions all around and “Off the Square” are bursting with things to do and see that are a perfect fit for the whole family. Coming up on its 2nd year, the downtown initiative has grown by leaps and bounds, and has become a destination and “must go to” for Smith County residents and out of town visitors. Holli Conley Fourniquet, Vice President of Marketing for Visit Tyler sums it up, “Every month is a new experience, and Downtown is definitely the place to be.” What started as a dream and experiment has become a collaboration and partnership with vendors, restaurants, food trucks, and local businesses. “We started out saying the concept was something we should try and see how it goes in the Tyler community. We really didn’t have any set expectations,” she explained. “We wanted to get people Downtown to show them all the great things available already. The local businesses have been extremely supportive and it’s basically a win-win for everybody.” Every month, you can bring the whole family and explore the area by hopping on the free open air shuttle, (weather permitting) sponsored by Tyler Innovation Pipeline. Visit the Rose City Farmers Market where you can pick up the freshest fruit and vegetables around. Hungry? Catch the food trucks on the Square (recent favorites have included Kona Ice of Tyler, Say Cheese, Pokey O’s, and Rollin’Smoke Pit BBQ). Don’t forget the super restaurants downtown, including the Black Pearl, Rick’s on the Square, Jack Ryan’s, SportsZone, Don Juan’s on the Square, The Porch at ETX Brewing, Foundry Coffee House, and Strada Cafe...there’s really something for every
taste, from casual to more formal dining. You can also shop ‘til you drop on 2nd Saturdays Downtown. There are a plethora of local merchants ready to welcome you including Moss: Where Flowers Are Fair where you can find the unique florals, Gallery Main Street which features local artists and exhibits, Moon River that has scrubs and sea salts, and Ye Olde City Antiques, and lots more. If you’re a fan of live music, pick your pleasure with great venues like Liberty Hall, The Garage Bar, ETX Brewing Co., Strada Caffe, and Rick’s on the Square. Plan ahead and check out who’s performing, relax and take a listen. There are some exciting 2nd Saturday months ahead featuring some one-of-a-kind offerings that have never been seen in Tyler before. September 8th (10am-5pm) brings a nationally recognized event to Downtown, “Junk Hippy,” which features over 150 vendors from all over Texas, selling vintage handmade and antique goods. October 13th is “Taco Throwdown” as contestants vie for the title of “Best Taco.” Bring your chairs and blankets downtown and get a chance to try tacos prepared by 15 competitors. November features the first inaugural “Dinner on the Bricks,” a classy, long-table dining event, featuring a 4-course dinner prepared by the chef at Rick’s on the Square with wine and beer pairings from Kiepersol. As you dine, be entertained by UT Tyler’s Jazz Band, with all proceeds going directly towards a revitalization grant for Downtown property owners. Also in November, Visit Tyler will collaborate with Joyce Crawford, owner of Rose City Expos to host a Downtown Bridal Show. “The really neat part of this event,” explained Holli, “is that we will have venues set up like specific parts of a wedding including Goodman Museum.” The Blue Santa Pub Crawl is always a December favorite, put on by the ongoing collaboration between Visit Tyler and EGuide Magazine, with 100% of proceeds sponsoring children. “Eat, drink, and be merry” at seven different locations, collect fun holiday costume pieces, and help a child in need for the East Texas Fraternal Order of Police’s annual “Blue Santa” program. Over 150 nationally recognized vendors from all over Texas and several surrounding states will be selling vintage, handmade, and antique goods. Their unmatched creativity and treasures have earned Junk Hippy the title of one of Flea Market Style Magazine and Country Living Magazine’s Top Vintage Events in the US. Food trucks complete the festival vibe. Think Round Top with a little Woodstock thrown in. Junk Hippy is a family-owned and operated business established in 2012, and is known for their events all over Oklahoma and Texas. Even with their tribe of regular vendors hitting the road together like a gypsy caravan, there are always new vendors to discover at a Junk Hippy show. Designers, DIY enthusiasts, pickers, bloggers, wedding planners, and business owners make Junk Hippy their source for the unique. This is the place to find that one funky piece that completes your project...or the one that begins your project. Shops, cafes, weddings, and nurseries have been put together with finds from Junk Hippy shows. Homes have been built with architectural salvage pieces found at the markets like the chippy old doors, windows, trim, even farmhouse sinks, and glass door knobs. Vintage fringe and cowboy boots, jewelry made from typewriter parts, art made from roadside curb treasures, farmhouse décor, antique and mid-century furniture and accessories are all things to grab at this event. The 8th Annual “Art Of Peace - Tyler” is September 14th-23rd. Come out and celebrate Peace and Community spirit. With community-wide participation in creative expressions of peace, Art of Peace celebrates the United Nations International Day of Peace (officially September 21st) and Peace One Day. The aim of Art of Peace is to promote a spirit of creativity, compassion, and community through partnerships, fellowship, dialogue, social action, music, poetry, and art. Held at 7pm at Liberty Hall, located at 103 E. Erwin in Downtown Tyler, come celebrate Peace Day with uplifting entertainment by the awardwinning musical duo, Trout Fishing in America. Their delightful performances speak to young
and old alike, with a blend of music and storytelling, sprinkled with trademark humor. This is music for people who take their fun seriously. Four-time Grammy award nominees, Trout Fishing in America has been performing music for three decades that get kids and adults alike singing and bouncing along. In addition, they also delight children with their arresting physical appearance: Ezra Idlet stands at a whopping 6’8” tall, and Keith Grimwood remains roughly 14 inches shorter than his bandmate. With songs like “My Hair Had a Party Last Night” and “When I Was a Dinosaur,” Grimwood and Idlet are “the Lennon and McCartney of kids music” (Kathy O’Connell, NPR). The East Texas Small Business Festival Rhonda Brinkley, the founder of East Texas Home & Small Business Network, in association with Empowerment CDC Small & Minority Owned Business Division, will be hosting the First Annual East Texas Small Business Festival in Downtown Tyler, September 15th, 10am-2pm. The theme for the event is “Connecting Our Business Community Piece By Piece.” They will also honor veteran-owned businesses as well as celebrate National Women Small Business Month which is in October. September 21st-30th in Tyler. While you can expect all the tried and true favorites, exciting new additions promise the likes of mind-bending magic, sea lion stunts, craft beer, and a cappella shows, just to name a few. With a lineup this jam packed, there’s more to see and do at the fair this year than ever before on the East Texas State Fairgrounds in Tyler. Here’s a look at just some of the festivities to come: Sheldon Casavant, Magician: Worldrenowned magician Sheldon Casavant takes the stage in the historic Mayfair building for an amazing show full of laughter, thrills, and impressive illusions. The show is featured each night during the fair at 8pm. The show is set to be as impressive as the 100-year-old building it’s hosted in. The historic Mayfair building was built in the late 1920’s and has seen musicians such as Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, and many more. While the building hasn’t been used in many years, fair organizers are opening it up once again for this spectacular show. Every Day
The Craft Beer Tour: New to the fair this year, the craft beer tour is an event you don’t want to miss. Craft breweries from all over Texas will gather in the upscale venue to present their beers to the public. For just $15, you can purchase a passport to sample up to 24 different beers from all over the State of Texas. Gather your friends and embark on a craft beer adventure. This will be held Fridays 4-10pm, Saturdays 2-10pm, and Sundays 2-10pm during the fair in Building C. Tickets are available at the entrance of the tour. Admittance is for 21 and older only. The Summit: The ultimate party in the heart of the fair! The Summit is an all-new venue for live music, beer, margaritas, and a great place to hang out with friends and family. Music Dubb And The Luv Machines: I’m a Musician Because It’s What I Love By Johnny Griffith When I’m searching for local musicians to interview every month I’ll browse through to see who’s playing where or if it’s someone I’ve heard before or I’ve had friends mention as someone worth hearing. Occasionally I’ll come across a band with a name that jumps off the screen and demands some attention. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Dubb And The Luv Machines. This is one of those bands I couldn’t help but smile over when I saw the name and decided they needed to be in this month’s issue. Then I listened to them and while the name might be catchy and silly, there is nothing silly about the talent The Luv Machines have on stage. Led by Dubb Williams, this band is built for the party bringing a great catalog of favorites, old and new alike, with the musical chops to leave any crowd wanting more. I recently sat down with Mr. Luv Machine himself to get the story behind the band: Johnny: Let’s start with a little background on yourself. Who is Dubb Williams? Dubb: I’m originally from Sulphur Springs, Texas and I graduated from Saltillo High School in Saltillo, Texas. I completed my bachelor’s degree at Texas A&M - Commerce. I’ve moved all over Texas, and out of Texas, but I always found home to be Sulphur Springs. I’m married with four-legged fur kids and I work as a professional audio and video manufacturer’s representative to pay the bills. I’m a musician because it’s what I love to do but I’ve done everything from food service to repo man to Child Protective Services to owning my own production company. I’m a Jack of all trades, I guess. Johnny: What was your first exposure to music that you can remember? Dubb: That would have been riding in the car with my mom listening to her classic country tapes. It was all country from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. The good stuff! Johnny: When do you remember thinking that this was something you wanted to do more than just a side hustle or a hobby? Dubb: Some friends and I put together a band for a youth group we all attended and the fire spread from there. We were just goofing around and then it kinda sounded ok, not great or even good, just ok. Then we started playing real shows outside of the youth group and it really took hold. I knew music was something I never wanted to give up. We played in other bands and spread our musical wings and it kept growing, there’s no end to the possibilities nor are there limits. I am just along for the ride no matter the destination. Johnny: Who is in the current lineup to Dubb And The Luv Machines? Dubb: Currently there are six Luv Machines, including myself. Jordan Owens on drums, Jacob Mazoch on lead guitar, Colton Smith on

bass, Cody McDowell on keys, Kristen Richmond on vox and a mean tambourine, and myself on vox and pretend guitar. I don’t play all that great but I surround myself with incredible guys and a gal, to make me look good. Johnny: How did you all meet? Dubb: We have all been friends for years through other parts of life, and when I moved back to Sulphur Springs from OKC, I decided I wanted to put a band together. It just worked out that the current members Jacob, Jordan, and Colton were either on a break from other projects or in between projects. After that, the pieces just locked into place. The chemistry is great and being friends prior makes it easy to bust each others chops or provide constructive criticism, but honestly, we prefer busting chops! About a year after we started the Luv Machines, Kristen approached me while I was visiting her family’s business and told me she was going to sing in our band. I welcomed her without an audition, shoot what band can’t use a good looking singer up front! It prompted some raised eyebrows from the guys, but then at her first practice with us, she opened the heavens by belting out a ballad and the rest is history. She fit right in, jumped on the bus with us, and never looked back. Johnny: So what’s the story behind the name? Dubb: It was actually a joke from my buddy Ryan W. He called me Big Dubb Luv and I would joke back about being a luv machine. When we started playing around town and East Texas, we figured we needed a name. It needed to be a name that was memorable and one that said we are here for a good time. So Dubb Luv became Dubb And The Luv Machines. We like to have a good time and we make it our business to help everyone else around us joins in. Johnny: You play a pretty diverse selection of music. Is there any genre or style you consider your wheelhouse? How would you describe your sound? Dubb: We want to entertain everyone when we play and we all like different styles and genres so that was a perfect combination which led to our diverse catalogue of songs. Everything from classic rock to hip-hop to country to pop and whatever’s in between. My guys are very talented, so with the different tastes, and one common goal, I’d say music is our wheelhouse. Johnny: How many originals do you have and how many find their way into a typical show? Dubb: We don’t typically do originals at a Luv Machines show but on rare occasion, and

it’s usually requested by friends that know about them, we’ll pull out one. Every now and then someone will yell out a request though. Johnny: About how many shows a month is the band playing and are the gigs mainly in the East Texas region or are you travelling a decent amount for shows? Dubb: Shows per month vary, we all have day jobs and/or daily grinds that come with having to “adult” so sometimes our schedule is thin and sometimes we are playing Thursday through Saturday. I’d book Sunday’s but some of us are in worship bands. We travel from Texarkana to College Station, up into Oklahoma and we can’t leave out Arkansas or Louisiana. If the road is big enough for the bus, we’ll go! Johnny: What has been your most memorable show to this point? Dubb: Man, they are all so much fun it’s hard to single one out, but playing our hometown at local establishments or private parties are always great times. Then we go out on the road and find hidden gems that rock. We love seeing new places and meeting new people. Johnny: What can a first timer expect at a Dubb And The Luv Machines’ show? Dubb: High energy, crazy antics from a rogue drummer, blazing guitar solos, fat bass lines, soulful vocals, songs they know and can sing along to, and occasionally a ‘request challenge.’ That’s when someone asks us to play a song not in our repertoire, and we go at it on the fly. Could be musical genius or could be a trainwreck, but we are gonna have fun with it and probably drag the requestor in on it. Johnny: What is on the radar for the rest of 2018 for you and the band? Dubb: We have a pretty full schedule to finish out the year and there may be an original EP on the loose soon. Who knows! We are playing Texifed Jam Fest this October which is going to be a 2-day festival in Sulphur Springs. We are very pumped about that. We have a couple of charity events to do as well, and those are always something we love to be involved in. We are looking toward 2019 with hopes of doing it bigger and better. Announcing the 10th Anniversary Season at Old Firehouse in Edom What is a “listening room?” It’s the holy
grail for singer/songwriters and avid music lovers alike. It’s a venue where the musician can connect with the audience and the listeners can hear the words, appreciate the poetry, enjoy the commentary between songs, have a conversation with the artist, and get a personally signed CD. All of this in an environment where the focus is on the music without annoying distractions from conversations, clanking dishes, constant movements, and anything else that would take away from the performance. Basically it’s a place where, aside from the artistry taking place on the stage, you can hear a pin drop. As this 10th anniversary season unfolds on October 20th, Jeff Gottesman, owner and founder of the venue, hopes that the secret of this wonderful experience will get out even further and all of the seats will be filled even more than they have in the past. Concerts are typically scheduled each month from October through April and can be found at theoldfirehouse.net, along with links to samples of the music. Admission prices for concerts are $12 in advance and $15 at the door, and events begin at 7:30pm with doors opening early so the audience can enjoy coffee and desserts. Introducing… The 2018 903 Music Fest! There will be 10 bands on 1 Stage in 2 days! Music starts at 6pm on Friday, October 12th, and 12 noon on Saturday, October 13th. This new family and community focused event features a number of different musical genres performed by locally, nationally, and internationally-known artists. Friday night’s headliners are the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band. Saturday night’s headliner is Clint Black. Friday night Casey James and Sam Hyman Band will perform. Saturday Tusk, The Molly Ringwalds, Dagnabbit, Chad Cook Band, Akeem Kemp, and The Mansion Family will be on stage. Tickets range from $20-$375. Get Certified as a Texas Wine Specialist at Kiepersol Winery’s Salt Kitchen Dr. Russ Kane, “aka Doc Russ, Texas Wineslinger – the man that wrote the book on Texas wine,” will hold a Texas Wine Certification class at Kiepersol Winery’s Salt Kitchen Classroom, 4120 FM 344 E in Tyler, MondayTuesday, September 24th-25th, 5-9pm each night. “The Specialist of Texas Wine” is a first-of-itskind program that offers a comprehensive series of classes featuring the unique wines and wine regions of Texas. Never before has there been a wine program with specific classes focused solely on Texas! The guided tastings will include over 24 Texas and benchmark wines. Tastings will include a range of grape varieties and blends originating from northern Europe (France and Germany), the Mediterranean (Italy, S. France, Spain, Portugal) and hybrid wines from Texas and other American appellations. These tastings will help students understand the distinctions of wines from selected Texas regions and grape varieties and their attributes versus their counterparts in the American and global wine world. The program exposes students to unique landscapes, geology, and growing conditions of the major wine regions in Texas: Texas High Plains, Texas Hill Country, Texoma, Escondido Valley, and Davis Mountains AVAs, as well as non-AVA regions of East Texas and Gulf Coast. This learning and tasting intensive program features important topics critical to the success of today’s wine professionals and savvy consumers that are looking for the best wines and wine values that Texas offers. Once through this class, you will be able to discuss Texas wines, their history and commercial development with friends and clients, select,
purchase and order Texas wines with authority, and know their appellation of origin in the state (or not), understand the evolution of the grape varieties in Texas and how they match up to the climate and other benchmark wine regions of the world. While the course is led by Dr. Kane, students will also hear from guest presenters actively involved in the Texas wine industry to provide practical insights and experiences on grape growing and winemaking in Texas. This “Specialist of Texas Wine Class: Level 1” cost is $242.50 (for certification students) and $174.60 (for auditing students). The fee covers the class (8 hours of lectures), PDF copies of slides and supplemental materials (downloadable from Dropbox), a copy of Russ Kane’s book “The Wineslinger Chronicles: Texas On The Vine” selected for the Grover E. Auditions will be held Saturday, September 8th in the TJC dance studio (Room 125) in the Ornelas Health and Physical Education Center, located at the corner of Apache Pass and Palmer Avenue on the TJC main campus. “Audition day is always exciting because it gives us a chance to see the wealth of dancing and acting talent that exists right here in East Texas,” TJC Academy of Dance Director Carolyn Hanna said. “This year’s production is especially exciting because not only is this the 30th anniversary production of ‘The Nutcracker,’ we will also be performing with the East Texas Symphony Orchestra in the stunning Cowan Center under the direction of Maestro Richard Lee. Our performances with ETSO only happen every five years, so we are thrilled to begin the process!” Performances are one day only at 2pm and 7:30pm Saturday, December 1st at the UT Tyler Cowan Center. “We are also inviting several alumni dancers from the TJC Dance Department, Academy of Dance, and those trained under Shurrell Wiebe and Thereza Bryce-Cotes to perform and showcase our professional dancers from around the country,” Hanna said. “These performances will highlight our amazing faculty who train these dancers and illustrate the talent that was nurtured right here in Tyler, Texas. Inside the Artist’s Studio:
The Writing on the Wall, The Art of Theresa Cheek By Derrick White Murals have existed as long as people can remember. They have served as a form of evidence of life from prehistoric times to modern day. “From the cave paintings at Lascaux Grottos in southern France to the street art murals of today, people have been leaving signs of their own existence in many places around the world. It is because of the earliest scratching, carvings, etchings and paintings, that we now have priceless knowledge of history and predecessors. These murals hold great significance for all of mankind. They depict life activities, every day scenery, and some religious traditions of the time period that they were created; giving us an invaluable look of the diversity of cultures during different periods. “Over the course of time, murals have covered interiors and exteriors of many public buildings (i.e., palaces, temples, tombs, museums, libraries, churches, and the houses of wealthy art patrons), spreading onto the streets and architectural elements more recently, all the while keeping their initial meaning and purpose: to paint a picture of society, created from stories, values, dreams, and change,” writes Angie Kordic in her article “Mural.” Tyler artist, Theresa Cheek, creates many murals among her repertoire of work. Theresa earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in art
history from the University of Texas and an Associate’s degree in Art from TJC. “I have always been fascinated with obscure techniques and have studied with various artists from Italy, France, and the United States on verre eglomisé (a French term for the process of applying both a design and gilding onto the rear face of glass to produce a mirror finish), egg tempera (a permanent, fastdrying painting medium consisting of colored pigments mixed with a water-soluble binder medium, usually egg yolk), fresh paint, gilding, and mural work,” states the artist. Theresa has served a three year presidency term with the International Decorative Artisans League and is currently on the board of the Arts and Humanities Council of East Texas (AHCET). She is currently a member of “Salon,” a prestigious international group of decorative artisans with a purpose of learning, preserving and handing down longstanding techniques. “I am a decorative artist, not a fine artist. That simply means I specialize in ornate, decorative borders, trompe l’oeil (a visual illusion in art, especially as used to trick the eye into perceiving a painted detail as a three-dimensional), gilding and other techniques used as embellishments in churches and other historical buildings. Although original sketches are done, most work involves copying various motifs and designs from the past. Most recent works include Saint Edwards Catholic church sanctuary and courtyard and restoration on the First Presbyterian church in downtown Dallas,” explains the artist, adding, “I also make marbled papers for bookbinders and other creative uses.” In explaining her techniques, Theresa says, “Although I do use commercial acrylics, oils, and 23k gold leaf, I also concentrate on 14th century techniques and make my own egg tempera, fresh pigments, and oils, along with gesso and casein.” Theresa’s business name is Art’s the Answer. She believes this is true for so many things in life. Art can heal as well as be a unifying universal language for civilization. “Art gives my life balance and purpose as well as a solace from stress,” avows the artist. “AASH vol3” an Annual International Juried Art Show Opens September 8th An annual international juried art show, AASH vol3 (Arcadia

Spring St. will host the exhibit in its award-winning facility, which historically served as the Arcadia Theater but now serves as the law firm headquarters. Pieces to be displayed at the show will include paintings, photography, sculpture and assemblage. The Arcadia Art Show will feature both local and international artists judged by an international jury. There will be awards for “Best in Show” and a “People’s Choice” award among others. Books Some Things to Think About By Gini Rainey “The Isle of Gold” by Seven Jane
If you like to read adventure books that have everything from swashbuckling pirates to mystical lands beneath the sea, then this is the book for you. Set in 1716 – the golden age of pirates – this book follows the adventures of Merrin Smith, an orphaned waif who was raised in the kitchen of a quayside brothel. Written by Seven Jane, a “dark fantasy and speculative fiction,” this book is filled with more pirates and fantasy than you can shake a stick at. When Merrin, at the tender of age of probably fourteen or so, decides to join the crew of the pirate ship Riptide in order to discover who her parents were, she disguises herself as a pirate and falls under the watchful eye of the notorious Captain Winter, whose madman antics and behavior keep everyone on board in line, lest they get run through by one of the many daggers he has hanging from his belt. When she meets the handsome boatswain, Tom Birch, a bit of unrequited love begins to weave itself into the story. Fortunately, or perhaps not so fortunately, as time passes on the Captain’s quest to find the mythical island of Bracile (a place hidden between air and sea and that exists only for a moment every two years - and which has never returned any man who has sailed for its shores) Merrin’s body begins to mature and she must now bind herself to prevent anyone on board from discovering that she is a woman. This book is a delightful romp and an easy read filled with the things that will keep the reader engrossed to the very end. Pour yourself a glass of wine, curl up in your comfy chair and let Seven

This book is one long emotional rollercoaster. Beginning when Jen’s 3-year old daughter Gracie is involved in a car accident and nearly dies, the emotions of everyone involved are raw and aching. While the character development was good, as was the premise, there were many things about this book that left me wondering “why?” Following the accident, Gracie had a near death experience and met angels who asked her if she wanted to stay or go home. She chooses to go home and shares with her non-religious mother that she met a man in heaven who is later identified as the archangel, Saint Michael after spotting a statue in a parish church. There could be a spoiler alert here, but I won’t tell anymore, so no need for one. It was too far into the book that the plotline began getting convoluted and twisted. Lots of accusations and insidious mysteries are uncovered, and suffice it to say, the intrigue became deeper and deeper. I, for one, had no idea where this was all heading, but when everything started falling apart and coming together, I had a hard time moving through to the end of the book. I will say that I kept turning the pages and finished the book, but there were many things that I had to question. For one, if Gracie’s mom, Jen, was so completely devastated by her recent divorce, it amazes me how quickly she falls for the doctor she met while Gracie was in a coma. Doctor Matthew steps into their life and begins to fill all of the voids they had both been experiencing since the divorce. He steps in way too easily. All of that being said though, this is a pretty intriguing book and well worth the read. Rating: 4 of 5 – Copyright 2018, Bookouture
