To Do

East Texas Craft Beer Group: Good Friends and Good Beers By Johnny Griffith

For many East Texans, if you mention beer what comes to mind is one of the big commercial brews you see advertised ad nauseum during sporting events and prime time TV. However, a growing number of beer drinkers are branching out from the same old same old and embracing the burgeoning craft beer movement. In a forest full of diverse craft beer choices from a myriad of micro-breweries across the country, sometimes it becomes hard to see the individual trees and know which beers are worth trying and which are great to sit on the shelf and look at the groovy can. Luckily, local brew-ophiles Jarrod Maness and Greg Lewis recognized the need for a resource and formed the East Texas Craft Brew Group (ETCBG) on Facebook. Maness and Lewis both share a love of the brew and have backgrounds that helped expose them to a wide variety of styles and tastes. Jarrod is the manager of Juls Events & Envirocare while Greg has worked for FRESH as the beer and wine specialist, True Vine as head of sales, and is currently working with Kiepersol Winery. I sat down with both recently to figure out what exactly the ETCBG is and what they’re up to. Johnny: I guess let’s start off with what exactly is the East Texas Craft Beer Group? Jarrod: It’s a place where all walks of Craft Beer Enthusiasts/Fanatics/Explorers/ are invited to share, question, inquire, and learn about “Craft Beer from the Local, State, and even National Spectrum.” Johnny: So when and where was the idea for the East Texas Craft Brew Group born? Jarrod: Greg and I had tossed around the ideas for a couple of weeks about starting a group on Facebook that would talk about all things craft beer. At the time, I was the GM of Juls Restaurant and Greg was the Craft Beer Specialist at FRESH. So one night over a bottle of Blind Pig from Russian Rivers Brewery, out of California, at my kitchen table, we came up with East Texas Craft Beer Group (ETCBG). Greg: If I remember correctly Jarrod Maness approached me about the idea while I was frequenting the restaurant he was running at the time. I’m glad he did because I’ve made many friends through this group. Johnny: How many craft brews had been had that night prior to the idea coming up? Jarrod: The night we actually cemented the group, surprisingly only one! Very unheard of with most of our bottle shares. Greg: At that point in my life, it was an ‘off day’ if I wasn’t two IPAs in by 7:30pm. I’ve slowed down since but our conversation about the group was discussed over a few beers and great fellowship. Johnny: So what do you feel is driving this trend we’ve seen the last few years toward more and more options of beer in the market besides the traditional macro-brews that have dominated the market? Jarrod: I think a lot! But the three areas I truly believe are most important are: first, how the craft beer community as a whole has embraced teaching and sharing what craft beer is all about. Next, we as a community, want to support our micro breweries and brew pubs, that are locally owned and operated here in Tyler and Longview and other cities throughout Texas. And finally, they taste really good! Greg: Variety! There have been a ton of new styles introduced including the semi-controversial Hazy IPA - a style of IPA that has a foggy/hazy appearance and a hoppy aroma without all the bitterness of a regular IPA. Many brewers have been introducing fruits to many beers to help reach a wider audience and broaden their marketability to new people. Johnny: How would you say the general knowledge of craft beer overall is in this area? Greg: Man, it’s growing a ton. The people from east Texas have become more and more curious because they see their regular beers getting replaced

Best Seafood in East Texas! with new beer. Brands like Revolver, Deep Ellum, True Vine and ETX Brewing are taking over tap handles all around east Texas. Its indicative of the growth in knowledge for the area. Johnny: Is the group primarily Facebook based or are there scheduled meetups to have beer tastings and swap notes? Greg: I’d say primarily Facebook based, but we do meet up a few times a year in order to raise funds for local charities and have a good time, most notably for “Dogtoberfest” benefiting the SPCA of East Texas. Johnny: Do you have any organized educational events where you try to enlighten the membership on different new styles, perhaps variations within styles or new trends? Jarrod: Actually, we had one of our members, Jordyn Rose, host an Off Flavored Beer Class, where she helped people identify off flavors in beer. She is planning on setting up another one. At our bottle shares and through conversation topic starters (on the forum) there are a lot of in depth conversations about styles and variations of the beers being shared. Greg: The page has become a resource for people who want to learn about new styles. The comment section of a post will always have people asking questions or commenting about what they thought of that beer. It’s fun to see the interactions of people and friendships become built in the group. We have a few members that always make very intriguing posts that will facilitate discussion. Another admin that we have, James Gillingham, has been a huge influence in facilitating discussion. He is always posing questions for the rest for the group to answer. Johnny: How has the public response been to the creation of the ETCBG? Jarrod: We continue to grow each year adding more community members that are constantly sharing, educating the group about upcoming trends, and what’s brewing locally. The addition of James Gillingham as an admin was huge. He is truly one of the most giving guys I have ever met, and let me go on the record to state, if you are invited to one of his bottle shares - it’s like Christmas, but for craft beer lovers and he is an amazing cook. Great craft beer calls for great food, right? Johnny: What does the ETCBG have in store for the remainder of 2019? Any special events? Jarrod: This will be our third year to have our annual fundraiser to help raise money for the SPCA of East Texas. In ETCBG, we love our craft beer and our Furry Family members! Greg: Every year our goal is to raise funds for Dogtoberfest and that is our main goal. To be honest, Jarrod Maness absolutely rocks that event every year and I’m just proud to be able to help out in the small way that I can. Johnny: So what style of craft beer would you say is your current favorite at the moment and why? Jarrod: Anything where maple is involved in the beer! I’m a sucker for great pastry stouts! Big thick mouthfeel with rich maple syrup in the nose and finish...I’m getting thirsty just thinking about it! Greg: I spent the better part of two years drinking beer almost everyday and I was drinking every style, IPA, Brown Ales, Bourbon Barrel Aged Stouts and porters, Sours… you name it. Today, you can find me drinking a nice clean lager or pilsner like Hans Pils by Real Ale or Tropic of Thunder Lager by Stone Brewing Company. I’ll get crazy and buy an IPA or two as well. Johnny: If you had to suggest a good transition beer to get someone from one of the traditional macros to craft beer, what would your answer be? Jarrod: Yard Bird from ETX Brewing or Smith County Lager from True Vines, both of which are local breweries! These beers offer great flavor with a clean crisp finish. Greg: Blondes and Lagers are great “in between” beers. I enjoy Hans Pils by real Ale, Love Street Blonde by Karbach, Brickstreet Blonde by ETX or you can take a huge gulp of a Black IPA and fall in love with craft beer, like I did. “Ashes-To-Go” at St. Francis Episcopal Church: A Season of Lent Begins

“Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent. With Lent being a time to prepare for the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ through 40 days of penitence and fasting. The ashes are a sign of our mortality and penitence.” – Rev. Mitch Tollett It’s that time again, between Christmas and Easter when suddenly one Wednesday you’ll notice people walking around town with a gray smudge on their foreheads. If you’ve always wondered what that’s about, or if you already know all about Ash Wednesday but struggle to find a way to receive ashes on a busy weekday, St. Francis Episcopal Church is here to help. “Ashes to Go” is a service provided by St. Francis Episcopal Church, located at 3232 Jan Ave., at the corner of De Charles St. and Jan Ave., in Tyler. On Wednesday, March 6th, 7-8:30am, the staff of St. Francis will be in the church parking lot, ready to get your Lenten observance off to a good start. You can remain in your vehicle and receive a blessing and imposition of ashes. Cars will enter the parking lot on Jan Avenue and exit on De Charles Street. Christians of many denominations all around the world observe Ash Wednesday. It’s the first day of the season of Lent, a time to prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation, and spiritual discipline. Ash Wednesday occurs forty-six days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies, and can be as early as February 4th to as late as March 10th. (Although Lent is traditionally considered to be 40 days long, symbolic of the 40 days Jesus fasted in the desert, the Sundays between Ash Wednesday and Easter are not counted as days of penitence.) The ashes used on Ash Wednesday, are made from the palms of the previous year’s Palm Sunday. These have been dried, burned, blessed, perfumed with incense, and hydrated with a little holy water or oil as a binding agent. Thus treated, the ashes are considered Sacramental. In observance of Ash Wednesday, ashes are applied, or “imposed,” on the forehead in the shape of a cross, and this action is usually accompanied by the words, “Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return.” This practice is meant to serve as a reminder of our mortality, a call to penance and humility, and an opportunity to set our hearts on the upcoming feast of Easter, which marks the day of our Lord’s resurrection. In addition to “Ashes to Go,” St. Francis Episcopal Church celebrates two Ash Wednesday services with Holy Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes March 6th at 12 noon and 6pm. film, “The Wizard of Oz,” and club/dance music in the pavilion. A pre-party takes place Friday, March 15th at Edom Art Emporium with the kick off of the “Motor Mayhem” exhibition. They will have live music and guests can see a preview of the motorized barstools racing the next day. The barstool races started in 1978 when a few guys got together at Quiet Man Bar on Knox Street in Dallas. The original circle of six barstool creators consisted of Bill Jenkins, Thomas Spangler, Johnny Gable, John Pullman, Mike Carr, and Keith Blackwell. Each man created his own version of a motorized barstool and then they began to race them outside the Quiet Man Bar. Soon it grew to the Highland Park Cafeteria parking lot where Mrs. Dewey Goodman announced the racers at a polished track. From there they moved to the Dart Bar of Cedar Springs followed by Lukes Outhouse. The tradition continued throughout Dallas, where Jenkins made the news with his barstool cannon blast that set off the alarm of a nearby liquor store. The notorious Dallas Farmers Market quickly took up the event in full sponsorship along with Ben E Keith and Budweiser to blast the races citywide. Jenkins’ barstool train debuted (featuring a super charged 350cc Honda) coming in first place. In 1991, the races finally found their end at the Greenville Avenue Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. Not seen in more than 20 years, the barstools resurfaced in Ben Wheeler in 2012 with Bill Jenkins’ continued involvement, and the tradition now takes place each year on Saint Patrick’s Day weekend. Bill’s original super charged barstool will also make an exhibition run including cannon blasts! Proceeds to benefit the Ben Wheeler Volunteer Fire Department. More information on the 2019 Saint P’s 279 Street Party can be found on The Forge Bar and Grill’s Facebook page with information on the Barstool Riders Association, or call (903)571-0244.

Music Cody Norman:

Are You Experienced? By Johnny Griffith

For a working musician, experience is just about like gold. With the right experience, you can get gigs, the respect of other musicians, and the appreciation of the fans. Local singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Cody Norman has been building an experience portfolio since he was old enough to listen, and is using that experience on stages all over the area. Born in Rusk, Texas in 1970, you might say Norman had music in his blood. His grandfather played the fiddle, and Cody grew up listening to his mother play piano and albums from Elton John and Cat Stevens, while his father played the outlaw country tunes of Willie and Waylon. Cody got his first taste of playing when his sister Beth handed down her snare drum from school band to him, and she subsequently introduced him to bands like Van Halen, the Scorpions, and .38 Special. Soon after, he started playing drums in the junior high band, and the rest is history. Between solo shows and playing with The Groove Slaves, Cody has a full schedule on his plate, but he took time to sit down and visit with us this month. Johnny: What is your earliest memory in music? Cody: My mother worked at the Rusk State Hospital and we attended a lake retreat for her office. While we were there, a man showed up to play guitar and sing. This guy had everyone’s attention, especially mine and at 8 years old, I never thought I would be able to manage what seemed to be magic emitting from his hands and voice. Johnny: Who would you say had the most influence on you musically in those early years? Cody: I’d have to say it would be my best friend, Bill Hunter. He is the son of a doctor, and he could play guitar, piano, and sing from such an early age. Bill encouraged me to stick with the music and we eventually started a band. Bill went on to study music at the University of North Texas and continues to perform with his band Common Ground, as well as motivate me to become a better all around musician. Johnny: When did you realize music was something you wanted to do more with than just be a hobby? Cody: In junior high I was asked to play drums with the ensemble band at one of our school band concerts. We played Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” which at that point was hot off the “Rocky 3” movie soundtrack. I had to borrow some cymbals from a friend, but I received such positive feedback and attention, that I knew I had been blessed with a way out of that little town and maybe even a career. Johnny: Did you have any particular local artists or mentors when you were breaking out into the local music scene? Cody: While I was playing in a band with my pastor, I was introduced to his friend, Don White. Don was a gentleman who made guitars and played a lot of old country and western swing. He would let me keep my drums in his shop and practice anytime. Sometimes it would just be me by myself,

Tribute to Townes Van Zandt:

Scheduled on 75th Anniversary of His Birthday “A Tribute to Townes Van Zandt” is schedule from 6-10pm Thursday, March 7th at The Forge Bar & Grill in Ben Wheeler located in Van Zandt County, Texas. The late Townes Van Zandt is often referred to as the most influential Texas songwriter of the 20th century. Musician Steve Earle says he was “the best songwriter in the world.” In celebration of the 75th anniversary of Van Zandt’s birthday March 7th, his family’s record company, TVZ Records, along with Fat Possum Records, are releasing a new album, “Sky Blue.” This collection of unreleased songs is a time capsule that Van Zandt created 46 years ago and 12• EGuideMagazine.com

but many times he’d be there with a bunch of his musician buddies and I’d sit in with them. We ended up playing nursing homes around the area and Don would pay me a little bit along the way. Those formative years wouldn’t have been possible without my mentor and good friend. Johnny: When and where was your first gig? Any standout memories from that first show? Cody: I don’t really remember the first one. All I can remember is it was either a party on someone’s patio, or it might have been a bar/bait shop on Lake Striker. I just remember thinking that making music and money was my kinda life. Johnny: You’ve had the opportunity to perform with some fantastic musicians over the years. Any one gig that carries a little more sentimental significance? Cody: I did a tour of the East Coast 10 years ago or so with a guitar player from Dallas. We did two nights at BB King’s in Times Square in New York City and the second night we were to play Jimi Hendrix’s Birthday tribute. Jimi has been the pinnacle of my musical influence since my early years of playing professionally. I got to meet Jimi’s brother Leon as well as Jimi’s mentors and some of the performers on his records. I was so nervous, but knew I had to manifest all of the energy Jimi played with and that inspired me even though I happened to be on the drums. Johnny: How much original stuff do you try to work in to your sets? Cody: I work in about two or three a night at the most. In the places I play, I’m usually there to keep people in their seats for as long as possible and it seems the familiar songs tend to keep them there longer. Johnny: How would you describe your particular style to someone who has never heard you? Cody: I suppose it’s from the singer-songwriter attitude of exuding a personal feeling through the framework of a well written song that sells the listener an idea. Johnny: You also are currently playing guitar and doing vocals for The Groove Slaves as well as your solo work. About how many shows a month are you getting in these days? Cody: It all depends on weather, time of year, the economy and how slick my pitch to venue owners can be, but on average between six to ten a month. Johnny: What do you have on the radar for 2019 that excites you? Cody: I’ll finally be releasing my first record that’s been in the works for 10 years. I’ve played drums on several artist’s records, but this will be my original songs with the majority of the instruments played by me. Johnny: Who do you listen to in the spare time when you’re not writing or performing? Cody: I typically listen to anything by Dylan, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, and Dire Straits or anything Mark Knopfler does. Keep up with Cody Norman at facebook.com/ cody.norman.754. shows the artist working out some of his most iconic songs in an intimate, comfortable setting. Van Zandt died January 1, 1997, at the age of 52 and is buried in the Van Zandt family plot in Dido Cemetery near Fort Worth. He came from a long line of Texas nobility. His three times great grandfather, Isaac Van Zandt, was a prominent leader of the Republic of Texas and the namesake of Van Zandt County, Texas. His great-great uncle Khleber Miller Van Zandt was one of the founders of Fort Worth. He was a poet and songwriter beloved by his many fans and peers. Don Williams and Emmylou Harris had a hit with his song “If I Needed You.” Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard reached No. 1 with their version of his song “Pancho and Lefty.” At the Ben Wheeler event, musicians who continue to be inspired by Van Zandt and devoted fans will honor the anniversary with a celebration. Stage hosts for the evening are singer-songwriters Heather Little, Meredith Crawford, Chris Rasco, Jeff Hewitt, and Shane Rendon. They will perform the first 90-minute set, then an open jam will take

Travis Bolt:

Finding His Style By Johnny Griffith

Travis Bolt is thankful he’s found his own style. The 26 year old musician from Mabank, Texas remembers a time when, in high school, he would bring his guitar to ag class and play for his friends, while wearing a bandana on his head. While occasionally some of those pictures will surface and a few laughs are shared, Bolt says the bandana has mostly been retired, but the guitar is a permanent fixture now. A full-time musician who can be found on stages around the area, Travis has an eclectic mix of influences and can trace his love of music back to his early days with his family. We tracked him down to learn a little more about him this month. Johnny: What is your earliest memory in music? Travis: My parents would take me to Larry Joe Taylor’s Texas Music Festival down in Stephenville where my dad cooked. It’s where, as a kid, I found my love for entertaining. Johnny: Who would you say had the most influence on you musically in those early years? Travis: Songwriters such as Rusty Wier, Van Zandt, and Jerry Jeff Walker. My dad showed me all the best music and the first CD I purchased with my on money was Styx. Johnny: At what point did you start thinking this was something you wanted to do more with than just be a hobby and perhaps try to make a career out of it? Travis: As I grew older and started playing my very first shows, I realized being on that stage under the hot lights and hearing the crowd is the biggest adrenaline rush. Although it’s easier nowadays, that feeling has never changed and never will. Making fans that turn into friends, that turn into my musical family is a privilege, and when they love your art it really brings it all together. Johnny: Who would you say your biggest mentors and supporters were when you were breaking out into the local music scene? Travis: I had a lot of folks helping and inspiring me along the way, but my dad was the real MVP. He introduced me to so many established artists

with a lot of advice to give. Larry Joe Taylor, Davin James, Rusty Wire, and some good friends from my hometown like Bill Burgin of Guitars ETC, and Wesley Pruitt to name a few. I still have a poster Tommy Alverson signed for me that says “Keep on rockin” that I got when I was very young. Johnny: Do you remember your first show? Travis: My first “show” was at a bar called Coal Miners. Wesley Pruitt was a teacher of mine for a short time when I was just starting out and had me play a few at his show. Before the song “Wagon Wheel” got over played, the original “Old Crow Medicine Show” version was a favorite of mine. I was about to play it then but as I stepped up to the mic I lost complete memory of the name of the song. I remember saying “Hey guys! My name is Travis Bolt and I’m going to play….uh…..” then I just started playing. It came out of the gate a complete wreck but I still won the crowd over! Johnny: When did you first start writing your own material? Travis: That’s a tough one to remember. I will say the first song I wrote that was noteworthy was called “Cherokee Winter.” I was probably around 14 or 15, but everyone loved it. Obviously, I hadn’t touched a drop of alcohol yet, but I did mention beer in it because even at a young age I understood the market. I remember my mom shaking her head but my parents were very proud and that makes it all worth it. I continued on from there and have quite the catalog today. Johnny: How would you describe your particular style to someone who has never heard you? Travis: I started playing bluegrass when I got my first guitar and that sticks around in my style still today. But the blues has always been in my soul. From the delta blues and front porch banjo to the pine trees of East Texas Country Music, I would describe my style as a soulfully tasteful mix of blues and folk/songwriter with country roots. Johnny: You recorded an album that finished up back in 2017. How was that experience and what did you learn from that process that you’ve carried with you moving forward? Travis: It was a great time and also a great learning experience. I did put way too many good ideas into each song that may have muddied things up a bit but in the end I did it with some great friends and was very proud of the outcome. Special

thanks to my boys Calvin Sheffield, Tyler Smith, Justin Barnes, Lanny Guest, and Christian Deibert at the Good Shed Studios. Johnny: Do you primarily perform with a full band or more solo work these days? Travis: I do more solo these days. Although my group was very tight, we all had great opportunities come out of the business that put us on separate paths. My brothers are all flourishing in the big ocean of the music world and I am very proud of them as I know they are proud of me. But who knows, we might end up knocking the dust off of the band trailer and heading back out some time soon. Johnny: What do you have coming up this year that we can look forward to? Travis: I’ve got a pretty great surprise for my fans this year! I can’t say when but I will say I just got out of the booth with a killer single I cut over at Rosewood Studios that is sure to kick the doors down, as well as plans for a new album on its way in the near future. “Stay tuned” as they say. Johnny: Who do you listen to in the spare time when you’re not writing or performing? Travis: I can’t get in the car without some Amos Lee or Red Hot Chili Peppers, but I switch around from the Damn Quails all the way to Breaking Benjamin depending on what I’m doing. Too much great music out there for one interview for sure. Follow Travis Bolt at facebook.com/travis. bolt.90.

What is a “listening room?” It is a place where, aside from the artistry taking place on the stage, you can hear a pin drop. It is Old Firehouse! Admission prices for concerts are $12 in advance and $15 at the door, and events begin at 7:30pm with doors opening at 6:30pm. More information can be found at theoldfirehouse.net, along with links to samples of the music. March 23rd: Jacob Johnson Part virtuoso and part storyteller, you might say that Jacob Johnson does with a guitar what Gene Kelly did with dance. Although his songwriting has won awards and his guitar-playing has put him on stage with Tommy Emmanuel and Phil Keaggy, his ability as an entertainer is what has won fans throughout the southeast. He refers to himself as "a ham that just wants to be on stage," but he’s much more than that. Jacob is an amazingly talented guitarist and songwriter which, combined with a bit of a personality, makes for a wildly impressive stage performance. Said of Mr. Johnson: “Part of the new breed of folk musicians who make their own rules.” (The Savannah Morning News, Savannah, GA) “Johnson sounds like Norman Rockwell paintings and the open road. He is a virtuoso, expressing a working comprehension of dozens of techniques and styles. He has blended and blurred the lines of genres to craft a sound he calls ‘Neo-Acoustic Folk/Funk’.” (The Florence Morning News, Florence, SC) One scheduled concert this season remains: April 6th: Edie Carey More information can be found at theoldfirehouse.net.

“Elvis on My Mind” Comes to Liberty Hall in Downtown Tyler

“Elvis is alive” or so Elvis’ biggest fans say today! Elvis and his music live today because of Elvis Tribute Artists (ETA) like Andy King (Andreas Stolzenthaler) from Sulzfeld, Germany, and Moses Snow, a local Fort Worth ETA. “Elvis on My Mind” starring Andy King, Moses Snow and Shake Rattle & Roll opens it’s US/European tour at Liberty Hall, 103 E. Erwin St., Downtown Tyler, Friday, May 17th at 8pm. The production will have three shows in Texas, two shows in Switzerland and five shows in Germany. Andy King’s very authentic voice, like that of the “King of Rock ‘n Roll,” has thrilled audiences all over Europe and the United States. When you close your eyes and listen to Andy’s voice, you’ll be convinced the real King, Elvis Presley, is on stage. King, who has been in the ETA World for 15 years, is accompanied by his band of seven years, The Memphis Riders. Andy’s band, one of the leading Elvis show bands in Europe, consists of several top musicians. Steffen Andres (bass), Jürgen Herb (drums), Richard Wagner (guitar), and Frank Söhner (piano), complement King’s performance. In 2017, Andy King & The Memphis Riders was honored with Germany’s trade media award “Artist of the Year,” not limited to ETA but selected from all recording artists in Germany. In January 2019, he was awarded the prestigious “Spirit of Elvis Award” at the European Elvis Championship in the UK. “Elvis on my Mind” takes you on a journey through all of Elvis’ genres. Moses Snow, the fastest rising 15-year-old ETA of the year, starts your journey in the 50’s. Hear 50’s rock ‘n roll hits like “Hound Dog” and “Blue Suede Shoes,” and 60’s movie hits like “Jailhouse Rock” and “Love Me Tender.” Moses is the winner of Memphis’ “Image of the King” Non-Pro Division in August 2018; winner of the Oklahoma State Fair “Elvis Extravaganza” in September 2018; and winner of the national “Elvis Extravaganza” in West Palm Beach Florida in February 2019. Andy King opens his set with the true-to-theoriginal Las Vegas show based on Elvis Presley’s album “On Stage” and the documentary “Elvis That’s the Way It Is.” The show clearly depicts the triumphant return of Elvis Presley to live concerts after spending most of the 60’s in his film career. The 1970 shows included some classic Elvis hits, but also songs that were not yet associated with The King, such as “Yesterday” (The Beatles), “Runaway”

(Del Shannon), “Polk Salad Annie” (Tony Joe White) and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (Simon & Garfunkel). In addition to the usual hits, there is a tasteful selection of classics and rather unknown, yet typical Elvis songs, including blues, gospel, country and soul. Shake Rattle & Roll, a national and locally recognized 50 & 60’s tribute show group, kicks off the show with their high energy tunes. The Las Vegas Doo-Wop winners will take you on a ride of your lives with their toe-tappin’, twisting mix of rock and roll, comedy and rockin’ tunes. Andy has many accomplishments in the US and Europe. He placed every year since 2016 in the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest sanctioned by Elvis Presley Enterprise, Inc.; the Texas Elvis Festival 2016 & 2017 in Dallas Texas; and Tupelo Elvis Festival 2017. He took 1st place at the ‘Elvis Contest’ in Boeblingen Germany, 2018; 3rd Place at the Georgia’s Elvis Festival, Brunswick, Georgia, 2018; was a finalist in ‘Images’ contest, Denmark and the Nashville Elvis Festival Nashville Tennessee, 2018; was 2nd Place at ‘Elvis Masters’, Bridlington UK, 2018; and was awarded the ‘Spirit of Elvis Award’ at the European Elvis Championship in the UK, January 2019. “Elvis on My Mind” will truly have you leaving with ‘Elvis on your mind’ and in your heart. Tickets are available at stardomentertainment.tix.com starting at $20. For more info call (817)251-1316, email stardomentertainment2@ gmail.com, or go to stardomentertainment.us.

A gifted guitarist, Ray also plays bass, piano, and drums. “My best musical work is from the ‘50s and ‘60s, but I listen to everything,” he says. Before joining the award-winning live tribute show Legends in Concert, Ray performed his high energy tribute to Valens in shows across Canada, the US, and Mexico, and received personal accolades from Ritchie Valens’ original producermanager Bob Keane of Del-Fi Records. Ray says, “It’s amazing what happens to the audience when I sing Ritchie Valens’ songs. They get very excited and want to dance out of their seats to join in. I love that part.” Special guests are Shake Rattle & Roll featuring ultimate tribute band Spinout and opening performer Dale ‘C’ Cummings. The concert is at the Gilmer Civic Center at 7pm. Inside the Artist’s Studio:

Make Tyler Weird

The Exploring Force of Addie Moore By Derrick White

“Being an artist is scary. You make things, and then you ask others to look, critique, dissect, and evaluate your work. I have always been drawn to art and I suppose I have always been an artist, as I feel like many humans are, but I didn’t realize or give myself credit until recently,” states local artist, promoter, and innovator Addie Moore. “I have been drawing and making my whole life. Both my parents studied graphic design and instilled an appreciation of the arts in me from an early age,” she continues, adding, “I enjoyed trying different media in high school but never saw myself as an artist. My parents also embedded in me the fear of the starving artist. I decided to study art history because I felt an academic approach would be a road to job security.” Addie is an illustrator and a ceramic sculptor. Her works tend to have a significant emphasis on line. Her illustrative work is inclined to have straight, hatched, striped, etched effects. These pieces are colorful, layered, and contain elements both recognizable and abstract. “For my illustrative work, I have a dry media studio. I tend to use inks, markers, pens, colored pencil, watercolor pencils, and watercolor, layered in no particular order. For my ceramic work I lean towards light, white, hand building clays,” Addie reveals. Moore graduated from the University of Texas at Tyler in 2016, where she studied art history and minored in studio arts. She focused her research and internships towards museum education and community involvement in the arts. Addie recalls, “I focused primarily on ceramics and drawing during my studies for my minor at UT Tyler. After college, I pursued jobs at non-profits and museums in Northwest Louisiana because they have a growing art scene and I had connections. I was able to land a couple of part-time art teaching jobs at after school programs but soon realized I would need a graduate degree to do anything I wanted to do full-time. I worked in inventory management for a jewelry store for a year before being recommended for my current

art teaching job in Tyler. It wasn’t until last year, when Aaron Dunn, local poet, caught a glimpse of my sketchbook and asked me to illustrate his book of poetry, ‘I’m Just Saying’, I felt validated as an artist. I completed his book, started renting my own ceramic studio, and started participating in group shows. I realized how much I had been holding myself back due to fear. I learn every day from my students and I am working to perfect my craft and my practice, but I still fall short all of the time. I also began seeing a need for a unification of the East Texas art scene.” Addie Moore is a frequent traveler and explorer. She has been able to save, fund, scholarship, and scrimp her way into multiple countries including France, Turkey, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, China, and India. She also loves road tripping across the United States. Moore’s adventurous spirit and tenacity has led to a wonderful new East Texas asset. Look out, Austin: Tyler is cool now. “A small group of energetic people can create an art scene anywhere,” proclaims Christina Rees, the Editor-in-Chief at Glasstire, a Texas contemporary art online-only magazine. She was the juror for the 34th Annual International Exhibition in the Meadows Gallery at the University of Texas at Tyler on view through March 8, 2019. The reason Rees was the juror and the reason two Tyler Museum of Art exhibitions were listed in Glasstire’s top five recommendations is because, from a visual arts standpoint, East Texas is becoming a hotbed and Addie Moore is channeling this energy into action. “There is so much artwork here in East Texas, and due to city over region mentality, we miss out on amazing exhibitions, public art, and events. I can see where artists and other creatives who have been living and working here for decades could feel discouraged by the past promotion of the arts. I have recently formed the group of creatives to help connect, begin holding ourselves to a higher standard, and begin exposing East Texas to everything we have to offer,” declares Addie. The group etx creatives is a community organization to connect imaginative people through internet, workshops, meet-ups, and events. The group intends to better connect East Texas to the arts in a real, accessible, and equitable way. Addie explains, “We had our first exhibition with local artists, poets, and musicians in January. We were so energized by the turnout. We decided to do another on February 23rd at the former True Vine Brewing Company location on Englewood featuring the local Art School Girls (ASG) Collective’s inaugural 15th Annual High School Art Exhibition March 31st-May 5th in the TMA’s North Gallery. The 15th Annual High School Art Exhibition is presented by the Ralph and Mary John Spence Exhibition Fund, and supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional support is provided by Collectors’ Circle Platinum Sponsor The Robert M. Rogers Foundation, and Collectors’ Circle Gold Sponsors Martha and Randy Key. “Lagniappe: Works by Letitia Huckaby” Continues on Exhibit In the TMA’s North Gallery, “Lagniappe: Works by Letitia Huckaby” is on exhibit until March 17th. Family, faith, and tradition are front and center in the Tyler Museum of Art’s major exhibition of early 2019, Lagniappe: Works by Letitia Huckaby. Organized by the TMA and curated by Caleb Bell, Lagniappe highlights the recent work of an artist who fuses photography, quilting, silk screening, and a vast expanse of media with a distinctly regional sensibility but worldwide appeal, primarily exploring her own family history and African-American heritage. Lagniappe is a term prevalent in the Louisiana French Creole culture, loosely defined as “a small gift given to a customer by a merchant at the time of a purchase,” or “something given or obtained gratuitously or by way of good measure.” Bell said he and the artist decided on this regional term as the exhibition’s main title because it encapsulates the sense of community and kinship that is a prevalent theme in Huckaby’s work.

Special Events

Special events in connection with the exhibition include a free First Friday tour March 1st. The first Friday of each month, 11am-12:30pm, the TMA offers a full day of free admission plus guided tours of its spotlight exhibitions. Family Days will be from 2-4pm Saturday, March 9th. Free admission, interactive art projects, light snacks, and a festive atmosphere for all ages are on the menu for the second Saturday of each month with the Tyler Museum of Art’s Family Day.

show, ‘Components’. The work featured in ‘Components’ is highly individualistic with two common ties, each artist uses ceramics and small pieces to come together into a larger idea, slowly growing into larger, meaningful moments of light, shadow, and space. Each member of ASG has artwork arising from their own research into form and philosophy. The works will be complimented by music by local band Dang Dens & Friends and spoken word poetry juried by poet Aaron Dunn. Our long-term goal as etx creatives is to develop an area where the arts can flourish, create a gallery and studio space for artists, and eventually develop a residency program bringing in artists to teach and to learn from each other.” Addie Moore believes in community. She proclaims, “Art is an independent practice in most

cases, but being part of a classroom, university, collective, art show, and community organization gives me the confidence to put my own work out there. I am so proud of the community we have here in East Texas, I am meeting amazing artists, musicians, poets, and creative people every day. It’s encouraging and exciting.” Writers note: I attended the etx creatives’ inaugural event and it had the best vibrancy, energy, and funky eccentricity of any East Texas art event I have attended in the last twenty years. Times are a-changing, let’s get weird. Keep Austin Weird is the slogan adopted by the Austin Independent Business Alliance to promote small businesses and creative culture in Austin, Texas. Other cities have since mimicked the motto, including Portland, Louisville, and Indianapolis.

Theatre East Texas Symphony Orchestra:

The 5 Browns in Concert

Richard Lee, music director and conductor of the ETSO, continues the season with works representing the American canon of classical music, old (i.e. baroque) music, and new music. They will begin new cycles featuring works by Haydn and Schubert, both woefully underperformed here, beginning with ETSO premieres of an obscure Haydn overture and Schubert’s well-known final symphony, “The Great.” All concerts are performed at the University of Texas at Tyler, R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center. The concerts begin at 7:30pm. For more info or to purchase tickets, go to etso.org or call (903)566-7424. March 23rd (7:30pm) - The 5 Browns with the ETSO will perform Brahms: Hungarian Dance No. 5 in G minor; Bach: Triple Concerto BWV 1064, mvt 1; Debussy: Clair de Lune; Poulenc: Concerto for Two Pianos in D minor; Muhly: The Edge of the World for Five Pianos and orchestra; and Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue. The 5 Browns enjoyed their first wave of critical attention in February 2002 when “People Magazine” dubbed them the “Fab Five” at about the same time they were featured on Oprah and 60 Minutes. “The New York Post” proclaimed: “One family, five pianos and 50 fingers add up to the biggest classical music sensation in years.” The quintet has garnered extensive coverage from media outlets ranging from The Tonight Show to “The New York Times.” April 27th (7:30pm) - Grammy®-winner Augustin Hadelich will perform on violin with conductor Richard Lee performing Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto and Schubert: “Great” Symphony in C Major. One of the most acclaimed artists of our time, Augustin Hadelich returns to East Texas to perform perhaps the most famous and demanding violin concerto in the repertory. The Juilliard-trained and Grammy-winning Hadelich describes the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto as one of the “most exciting concertos … a very emotional piece full of character.” Hadelich’s goals regarding the performance of this work include “communicating joy and excitement while balancing Mozartian (perhaps Tchaikovsky’s favorite composer) elegance with heart-on-your-sleeve Romanticism.” The concert and the season conclude with the ETSO premiere of Schubert’s final symphony.

Events & Plays

March 8th-17th (Thursday-Saturday at 7:30pm, Sunday at 2:30pm): “Bus Stop” will be on the stage at Tyler Civic Theatre. In the middle of a howling snowstorm, a bus out of Kansas City pulls up at a cheerful roadside diner. All roads are blocked, and four or five weary travelers are going to have to hole up until morning. Cherie, a nightclub chanteuse in a sparkling gown and a seedy fur-trimmed jacket, is the passenger with most to worry about. She’s been pursued, made love to and finally kidnapped by a twentyone-year-old cowboy with a ranch of his own and the romantic methods of an unusually headstrong bull. This belligerent cowhand is right behind her, ready to sling her over his shoulder and carry her, alive and kicking, all the way to Montana. Even as she’s ducking out from under his clumsy but confident embraces, and screeching at him fiercely to shut him up, she pauses to furrow her forehead and muse, “Somehow deep inside of me I got a funny feeling I’m gonna end up in Montana …” As a counterpoint to the main romance, the proprietor of the cafe and the bus driver find time to develop a friendship of their own; a middle-aged scholar comes to terms with himself, and a young girl who works in the cafe gets her first taste of romance. Tyler Civic Theatre is located at 400 Rose Park Dr., Tyler, next to the Tyler Rose Garden Center. For more info call (903)592-0561 or go to tylercivictheatre.com. Playwright J.M. Barrie struggles to find inspiration until he meets four young brothers and their beautiful widowed mother. Spellbound by the boys’ enchanting make-believe adventures, he sets out to write a play that will astound London theatergoers. With a little bit of pixie dust and a lot of faith, Barrie leaves his old world behind for Neverland. The magic of Barrie’s classic tale springs spectacularly to life in this heartwarming theatrical event. April 11th (7pm): “The Stations of the Cross” will be presented at First Presbyterian Church. For centuries Christians have meditated on Jesus’ final journey to Calvary. Inspired by the traditional Stations of the Cross, French organist and composer Marcel Dupré improvised fourteen dramatic musical depictions in 1932 interspersed with readings by Paul Claudel (French Ambassador to Washington, DC from 1928-1933). In this contemplative, candle-lit performance, Claudel’s poetry and original paintings by local artists join Dupré’s Le Chemin de la Croix (Stations of the Cross) in illustrating Christ’s final hours.
