Sunday, March 1st at 2:30pm, a gallery talk will be held, presented by Katherine Brimberry, Co-Founder & Director of Flatbed Press. This gallery talk is free and open to the public, though reservations are encouraged. This program is generously sponsored by Center for Advancement and Study of Early Texas Art

The 16th Annual High School Art Exhibition March 29th-May 3rd

March 29th-May 3rd, the 16th Annual High School Art Exhibition will be on display in the North Gallery. The TMA offers dozens of aspiring artists the opportunity to show their work in a full-scale, professionally curated museum exhibition with this enduring program. Entry is open to all senior-level high school students as selected by their art instructors, with an average of 70 young artists participating each year. The showcase also includes an “Up & Coming” category for junior-level art students exhibiting their work outside the competition. Four outstanding works as selected by the jurors, including an overall “Best in Show,” will be presented with “Merit of Honor” awards during the Opening Reception and Awards

A New Name & 2020 Schedule Announced:

The Plaza Gallery, Downtown Tyler

Plaza Gallery, formally Gallery Main Street, is now located at 110 N. College Ave., Downtown Tyler. “We spent 10 years in the old space, growing and celebrating the Art scene here in Downtown Tyler. As the new chapter in our journey begins, we are thrilled about the new space and the possibilities it holds for our Art Community. With a new space and new initiatives, the Downtown Tyler Arts Coalition (DTAC) has started the re-branding process. We will soon announce the new name and logo for the Gallery! We will also be releasing a new website with the capabilities to view and purchase the featured art online. “Art by A.C. Gentry Jr.” is on exhibit at the Smith County Historical Society Museum, 125 S. College Ave., Downtown Tyler. Admission is free, donations accepted. Also on exhibit is the Smith County Historical Society’s newest exhibit, “The Success of Smith County Texas Women.” Currently featured are six women from Tyler’s past: Marietta Crowder Walker, Alliene Gaston Coker, Willie Lee Campbell Glass, Sarah McClendon, Ann Collins Campbell (Earl Campbell’s mom), and Bess Robinson. Come learn more about this Doctor, Banking Executive, Educator, Reporter, Independent Rose Grower, and Deputy Sheriff. Admission is free.

Join the opening reception to welcome artists Kelly Gowen, John Woodard, and Stacie Deslatte on exhibit through April 25th. This will be held at Gold Leaf Art Gallery & Frame Shop, located at 4518 S. Broadway, Tyler.

“The Success of Smith County Texas Women”

The Tyler Museum of Art (TMA) is located at 1300 S. Mahon Ave. on the Tyler Junior College main campus. Regular TMA hours are 10am-5pm Tuesday-Saturday, and 1-5pm Sunday. Organized by the Tyler Museum of Art, “Lone Star Impressions II: Prints by Flatbed Press” highlights more than 30 fine art multiples created in a variety of techniques from over the years. The exhibition heavily focuses on artists that live in Texas or have strong ties to the region. The show features works by John Alexander, Keith Carter, Luis Jimenez, Melissa Miller, Liz Ward, and Joan Winter, among many others. Founded in Austin in 1989 by Katherine Brimberry and Mark Lesly Smith, Flatbed Press has worked with artists from all over the world. Their editions can be found in private and public collections around the world. This exhibition is a continuation in the “Lone Star Impressions” exhibition series showcasing Texas-based printmaking studios and promoting education in printmaking processes. This will be on exhibit through May 31st. There will be a Gallery and Artist Talk with Katherine Brimberry (Co-founder and Director of Flatbed Press) at 2:30pm on March 1st.

Ongoing this Month:

Monthly Tyler Museum of Art Free Events Ceremony from 2:30-4pm Sunday, March 29th at the Museum. At the Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony, you can meet the participating artists, enjoy light refreshments, and cast your votes for the annual Viewers’ Choice Award presented at the exhibition’s conclusion. All participating artists receive Certificates of Participation and oneyear student memberships to the TMA.

Coffee Talk at the TMA

Plan now to come by every Wednesday in April for live music at the Tyler Museum of Art. Concerts begin at 12 noon. Among the beautiful works at the Tyler Museum of Art (TMA), you can enjoy a performance while sipping a cup of hot coffee and eating delectable pastries and cookies. Concert and museum admission is free during the time surrounding the concert. Performances are: • April 1st: TJC Guitar Ensemble • April 8th: TJC Harmony & Understanding and Chamber Singers • April 15th: TJC Instrumental Chamber Ensembles • April 22nd: TJC Steel Pan Ensemble • April 29th: TJC Music Faculty

Free First Friday Tours (11am-12:30pm) will be held in connection with the current exhibitions at Tyler Museum of Art, featuring a full day of free admission plus guided tours of their spotlight exhibitions. Family Days (2-4pm) are held on the second Saturday. Free admission, interactive art projects, light snacks, and a festive atmosphere for all ages are on the menu.

Artist Lunch & Gallery Talk with Derrick White

Join this artist lunch and gallery talk with Derrick White’s collection “Somewhat Controlled Chaos-ism” at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Foundation Office, 100 E. Ferguson, Ste. 800 in Tyler. There is complimentary parking at the Regions Bank parking lot. This is free to attend.

Seeking Entries for 15th annual Life in Tyler Photography Contest

The City of Tyler Parks and Recreation Department is seeking entries for the 2020 Life in Tyler photography contest. Entries will be accepted from March 2nd-10th. Photos will be exhibited at the Rose Garden Center during the 2020 Azalea Trails, March 21st-April 5th. Ribbons and prizes will be awarded for the “Best of Show” entry as well as first, second, and third place for each of the 12 categories.
