2019 Tyler Go Red For Women Luncheon
Fifteen years ago, Go Red For Women was born as a campaign to raise awareness among women about their great health threat – heart disease. Slowly, the campaign grew into a movement – one that not only brought together thousands of women annually but became the trusted, passionate, relevant force for change to eradicate heart disease and stroke all over the world. Go Red For Women provides a platform for women and their families to lead healthier lives, and drive collective action for community transformation. It’s not just about wearing red; it’s not just about sharing heart health facts. It’s about providing women with opportunities to prioritize and take charge of their own health; building communities that support and provide access to healthy choices; demanding equal access to healthcare for all women and their families; and increasing women in STEM in upcoming generations. The Go Red for Women luncheon continues to serve as the cornerstone event of the Go Red For Women movement in local communities. This empowering event focuses on preventing heart disease and stroke by promoting healthy lifestyles, building awareness, and raising critically-needed funds to support research and education initiatives. Cardiovascular diseases, which include stroke, claim the life of a woman about every 80 seconds. “We hope you will join us on our mission because about 80 percent of cardiovascular diseases may be prevented.” The time is now. Tyler Rallies in Support of Travel and Tourism Industry
Community, Business and Political Leaders Gather to Endorse Travel’s Economic and Cultural Benefits during National Travel and Tourism Week
Visit Tyler and the City of Tyler are encouraging everyone to get out and be a tourist in their own backyard this summer. On May 8th, Mayor Martin Heines will address City Council on the many ways travel contributes to the community. The proclamation is part of the 36th annual National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW), which unites communities across the country in celebrating how travel matters to jobs both nationally and locally, economic growth, and personal well-being. NTTW Week is May 5th-11th. The theme of this year’s NTTW, “Travel Matters,” highlights the innumerable ways in which travel makes up the fabric of Tyler’s culture and economy. Each day of NTTW will celebrate a different facet of travel: the economy, new experiences, jobs, infrastructure, health benefits, hometown pride, and how travel strengthens families. “Travel supports one in nine American jobs, including 4,000 local jobs here in Tyler,” Mayor Heines said. “This week, we celebrate travel’s powerful impact on our economy. We ask everyone – from elected officials to our local friends and neighbors – to support pro-travel legislation at the local, state, and national level.” “In every pocket of America – from the largest cities to the smallest towns – travel matters,” U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow said. “I, like so many others, got my start in the travel industry, and it shaped my life in ways I could have never imagined. This National Travel and Tourism Week, we’re celebrating how travel powers our economies, strengthens our communities, and changes our lives.” From small businesses to large attractions, travel employs a diverse workforce in Tyler. • 4,000 local jobs are supported by travel and tourism in Tyler • Tourists spend $386 million in Tyler annually These local figures are an important part of travel’s economic importance nationwide. • Travel is a $2.5 trillion industry in the U.S. • Travelers support 15.7 million American jobs – roughly 8.9 million direct travel jobs, and 6.8 million indirect jobs • Travel-related spending generated $171 billion in federal, state, and local tax revenue in 2018 “I have seen firsthand how much travel matters to our community,” Visit Tyler President Shari Lee said. “Over the years, working in the tourism industry in Tyler, we have seen more hotels, more attractions, and a year over year increase of visitors. I’m proud of Tyler, and eager to welcome even more visitors here to show them why we love Tyler so much.” Do your part in supporting the tourism industry in Tyler by visiting an attraction, restaurant, or other related business you have never been to. Be a tourist in your own backyard. Don’t know where to start? Visit Tyler offers a destination training tour called “Keepin’ Tyler Rosy” twice a year. The next training tour is June 23rd. The tour is free and offers residents a chance to see a lot of what Tyler has to offer. For more information on the Keepin’ Tyler Rosy Destination Training, contact Susan Travis at stravis@tylertexas.com. For a full list of fun activities in the area go to VisitTyler.com.

Tours this month are: May 4th (8am-4pm): Explorer Chick Does a Tour - Join for an exclusive and private womenonly Texas Animal Sanctuary experience. Not only do you get to spend time around these animals, but you also get to help make their lives a little better! Most of the animals have been rescued from near-death situations such as slaughterhouses, biomedical research laboratories, and trophy hunting ranches. Others have been rescued from roadside zoos or were former victims of the exotic pet trade. Others came from public lands where they were threatened with extermination by the federal government. Your day will kick off learning about the Ranch and include an instructional safety briefing. Then you will split into groups where you will be assigned to multiple areas of the Sanctuary. You might find yourself preparing monkey diets, mucking equine stalls, doing general maintenance of the facility, or feeding the farmed animals. It all depends on what needs to be done the day of your tour. Halfway through the day, we will meet up for a plant-based, catered lunch. In the afternoon, the groups will mix up giving everyone a different experience! After helping around the sanctuary, you will spend some time off your feet enjoying a Private Guided 1-Hour Bus/Truck Tour throughout the grounds. Tickets are $99 and available at explorerchick.com. May 11th, 25th, June 15th, 29th (9am and 1pm): Ranch of Dreams Tour - You’ll go on an inspirational journey through 1,400 acres of the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch to see and hear about more than 800 domestic and exotic animals that have been saved from lives of neglect and abuse. This bus tour will take you past dynamic enclosures and rolling pasture. Your guide will share a video presentation, and you’ll learn why many of the animals needed to be rescued and came to be at the ranch. While we can’t guarantee sightings of specific residents, you may see Penelope, a potbellied pig found wandering down a street after being abandoned; or Midge, a male chimp previously used in hepatitis research. The sanctuary is not a zoo and is not open to the public other than by small, pre-scheduled, guided tours to respect the peace and privacy of the animals. May 11th, June 15th (9am): Social Impact Experience at Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch - At this event, you’ll go on an inspirational journey and experience the social impact Amory Black Beauty Ranch has on the community. During this experience, we’ll explore the history of this fascinating organization and share the stories of the diverse animals who live here. From animation to athletics, horsemanship to robotics, and scuba to improv comedy, Tyler Junior College has a summer camp to spark the imagination of any young explorer. Registration is open now for TJC Summer Camps for kids ages 3 and up. Camps begin Monday, June 3rd, and continue through mid-August. “We have a great lineup of activity and athletic summer camps,” said Heath Stoner, director of TJC’s Ornelas Health & Physical Education Center. Stoner also oversees the college’s summer camps. “TJC camps offer great opportunities for kids to gain skills to succeed in sports and learn about other cultures through art, science and technology,” he said, “but they’re also often a kid’s first opportunity to spend time on a college campus. Ultimately, we hope our campers are inspired to pursue a college career someday.” The camps are operated at several locations on the TJC campus, including the Center for Earth & Space Science Education at TJC, the Wagstaff and Gentry gyms, the Ornelas HPE Center, the art department, science labs, and swimming pool. Athletic camps, run entirely by TJC coaching staff and players, include: baseball, basketball, football, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. Al & The Longshots: A Great Reward of Success By Johnny Griffith
Webster’s Dictionary defines a longshot as “a venture involving great risk but promising a great reward if successful,” but one listen is all one needs to realize the irony in the name of local band Al & The Longshots. As they are anchored on stage by soulful and raw vocals along with a powerful three piece band, their listeners run little risk of not being rewarded at one of their shows. Together since 2015, Al & The Longshots have been spinning new takes on crowd favorites ever since and continue to increase their stage time in the area as more people figure out these Longshots are a sure thing. I sat down with the band this month to find out a little more about them: Johnny: What is the current lineup of Al & The Longshots? Dusty Douglas: I play drums for the band. Charles Praytor is our bassist, Preston Dotson is our guitar player, and Allison McGee is our lead singer. Johnny: How did you all meet? Dusty: I met Charles at TJC while we were both students studying music back in the mid-2000’s. In the summer of 2015, we were both in a production of “The Buddy Holly Story” at Tyler Civic Theatre, and that is when I met Preston. We were all playing members of Buddy’s backing band, The Crickets. I met Allison when Preston and Charles started putting this band together. Preston: Charles was one of my teachers at TJC in the music program. During my last semester he asked if I would be interested in doing a musical which is where we became friends; this is also where I met Allison. As Dusty had mentioned, we met during “The Buddy Holly Story.” Allison: I was driving on I-20 and this hairy man waved me down and asked me to be in a band...okay, I’m kidding. Charles pretty much brought everyone into the band. I knew him from some previous theater productions we’d worked on together. I trusted him because I knew he was talented and wouldn’t dedicate time to something he didn’t actually believe in, and he wouldn’t waste my time either. Preston had impressed me in a previous show and Dusty was the new face for me. Charles: I met Allison in 2004 through community theatre, she was actually the first person I met after moving to Tyler. We reconnected in 2011 to do a Patsy Cline revue, and that was my first introduction to her as a vocalist. I was developing my own project at the time, but I immediately made a mental note to work with her in the future. I met Dusty as a student at Tyler Junior College in 2005. I was a classical-track pianist, but knew I wanted to get into a band eventually. I was enamored with his writing/recording abilities, even though at the time it was about as far away from my own style as I could imagine. I kept up with him when we parted ways for different colleges, occasionally picking his brain through email or a random phone call. I met Preston during my first year as a professor at TJC. I could tell we weren’t that far apart in age, and asked if he’d play for a musical I was working on that summer. He agreed, and we kept up a correspondence over text, mostly bonding over our shared gear-head traits. Johnny: Are you all local or are there some transplants to the area? Dusty: I moved to Tyler shortly after 9/11. I was born in Houston and lived there until I was a teen. My family moved to East Texas and I’ve been here ever since, with the exception of a brief stint where I lived in Los Angeles, California. Allison: I’m a Tyler native with some tenure in Houston as well. Moved back with my family in middle school and been here ever since. Charles: I was raised in the suburbs of Dallas, and moved to Tyler as a teenager. Preston: I’m super local. Johnny: What about the name? What’s the story behind Al & The Longshots? Dusty: We wanted a name that had a nice ring to it, and that would also pay homage to the talent of our singer and frontwoman, Allison. Allison: “Al” was a nickname I acquired in high school, and it’s followed me right on into my 30’s. Dusty: We thought it would be a fun surprise for anybody hearing and seeing us for the first time. As far as The Longshots, it fits us backing boys in the band perfectly.
Charles: Fun fact, we originally were going to call ourselves “The Vanguard” but soon found out that was the name of D’Angelo’s band. I think it worked out for the best. Preston: All my ideas got shot down so I picked the one they came up with that was ok. Johnny: What first got you into music individually? Dusty: I first got into music in elementary school when my mother got me a violin and enrolled me in the Suzuki Music program in Houston. I really enjoyed it while it lasted. Later on, as a young teen, I started taking an interest in rock music and my parents bought me a Colgategreen Hohner guitar and Carvin practice amp. I taught myself how to play and have been writing, recording, and performing music ever since. I started tinkering with drums a few years after that. Preston: My family on my mom’s side was musical, my grandfather played with Elvis a few times while they were in the army and my uncle has played with several large country acts. My parents surprised me with my first guitar when I was in the third grade, and later on when I outgrew it, my grandparents on my dads side got me my first nice acoustic guitar, a Martin which I carried everywhere and played anytime I could. Soon I moved on to electrics and somehow wound up in the music program at TJC playing classical during the day and in country bands at night. Allison: We’re all singers in my family. My parents raised me on everything good from Al Green to Aerosmith to Whitney Houston to CCR, and I got into musical theater at seven years old. We didn’t have the money for voice lessons, so I just listened and imitated what I heard until my own until my sound started to develop. Charles: I had an art teacher in Dallas that would do these “performance nights” at her house with her student’s families. There were some incredible artists and musicians in that group. This one family that played violin and cello told my parents to get us in music lessons, even if it was just on recorder. So recorder it was for about 6 months, then we added piano. As a kid I always loved the attention playing a piano brought, so I stuck with it and it’s turned into a career. Johnny: What was the first show as a band? Allison: Our first show was at Click’s in Tyler. The guys were all pretty much pros at performing in bands, but this was my first band gig ever. I’d been on stage almost my whole life, but that show was different than anything I’d done. I don’t think I moved more than three times in 2 hours. Dusty: Real talk, Al rocked the house that night harder than the three of us combined. Allison: The set went well and we started a small following that’s gradually grown into a pretty fantastic crowd. Johnny: How would you describe your musical style? Has it evolved since the band formed? Allison: We always struggle with this question, because we cover such a wide range of music from jazz to rock to r&b...we kind of do it all. That’s also what I love about our “sound” - you can’t really pin it down to just one thing. I think it reflects us really well - we’re an eclectic group and so is our music. Johnny: You all have done some fantastic covers in your shows, are there any that seem to have become crowd favorites? Is that the same as the band favorite? Dusty: There definitely seem to be a few that always deliver. Off the top of my head, I’d say “Kiss” by Prince, “Mainstream Kid” by Brandi Carlile, and “Feel It Still” by Portugal. “The Man” always get the crowd moving. Preston: I may be biased but I tend to see a large reaction on the guitar heavy songs, “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” “Pride and Joy,” etc. Charles: I feel like people never get tired of “Folsom Prison Blues.” Dusty: So true. You can’t go wrong with Johnny Cash. Johnny: What about originals? Is the band doing any writing at this point? Allison: We have a few in the works. Between gigs and rehearsals and our “day” jobs, it’s hard to find time to really sit down and write, but we work well together and I’m blessed with a group of talented guys who can easily take something that starts in my head and give it legs. Johnny: About how many shows a month are you currently performing?
Dusty: Generally, we play about 2-3 shows a month. Typically, these vary from venue gigs to private events. Johnny: What does Al & The Longshots have on the radar for the rest of the year we should be aware of? Allison: We really want to get writing. It’s finding the time between gigs, which is a good problem to have, but that’s where we want to go. Dusty: Agreed. We’re also playing more and more private gigs, which is really fun. Venue gigs are great too, but being able to provide the soundtrack for someone’s special event can be a really rewarding and intimate experience. Johnny: How would you describe your show to a first timer? Dusty: Pure fun. Our goal has always been to use our band and musical abilities to lift spirits and provide an outlet for folks to come out and have a good time. Nothing satisfies us more than playing in front of an energetic crowd that is letting the music carry them away for a few hours. Allison: We like to play with our crowds. That can mean getting someone to sing with me, or Chuck and Preston mingling with the crowd while they’re playing. More than half of our shows end up as a dance party anyway so we figure, why not go with it? Make it fun. Make it interactive. We’re goofy people, and we don’t take ourselves too seriously. People respond to that. Johnny: Thanks for taking the time with us. Band: Thank you! Keep track of where Al & The Longshots are online at facebook.com/longshotsmusic/.

The Bellamy Brothers at Moore’s Store: “The Love Still Flows”
Howard and David continue to prove that the trail they’ve ridden to fame has been as unique as their music itself—music that is now celebrating over 40 years of success. The road that started on the pop music charts in the ‘70’s, took a winding turn into country music in the ‘80’s, paving the way for duos to come, such as Brooks & Dunn, Montgomery Gentry, Big & Rich, and The Judds. But before the road forked into country, the musical odyssey of the Bellamy brothers started creatively smoldering in their home state of Florida, before exploding nationally amidst the ’70’s pop music culture of L.A. Moore’s Store is located at 1535 FM 279, Ben Wheeler. To purchase tickets go to mooresstore.com/music.html. May 4th, 7pm

Inside the Artist’s Studio:
Let’s Put in Some Happy Little Trees
The Love of Art and Community with Kerian Massey By Derrick White
“The hardest part of being an artist, for me, is trying to really express myself genuinely without it becoming some monstrous fluff because all I really want to do is create and not have some deep meaning to it. Other times my art is deep, but not always,” states artist Kerian Massey. Massey graduated from The Art Center in Tucson, AZ with an Associate’s degree in advertising art. She was taught technical drawing and illustration. “I am also a self-taught painter. I picked up a paintbrush at age 24. I wouldn’t say I was very good for another 6 years or so. It took some time to learn. I’m still learning,” she adds. Massey creates in a daring, colorful surrealist style appealing in good design and cheeky tastes. The artist states, “I paint ideas more than anything. I will have a big idea floating in my head and it won’t go away until I create it or at least get the idea sketched out onto a canvas. I will paint in whatever style suits my mood. I like realism but most of what I paint lends itself to a more illustrative style with weird juxtapositions.“ Kerian primarily uses acrylic on canvas. She also loves Prismacolor markers, colored pencils and heavy paper for illustrations, scratchboard, pen and ink and a myriad of sculpting materials. Back in high school, Kerian Massey won an art contest and redesigned the academic logo for the school. The artist recounts another early inspiration: “I went to Puerto Rico on a vacation with a friend and was at a beautiful beach lamenting I only had 2 dollars left, yet we still had two more days left of our trip. A guy saw me drawing and asked me to create a sign for his business. I made $40 and it really hit home I could make a living making art. When I moved to Texas I created art for schools. I designed murals and mascots for a company called Graffixx. It was incredible to see my work so large, being painted by these talented teams of artists. I got to create the zodiac art mural in the TJC planetarium rotunda and I have created art for local schools including Lindale, Mabank, Tyler, Rains, and Van. As I was doing mural art, I had the opportunity to get my art onto Extreme Home Makeover five times.” Kerian’s favorite artist is Bob Ross (American painter, art instructor, and television host). “I This Month at Tyler Museum of Art:
“Texas Birds: Works by Frank X. Tolbert”
The Tyler Museum of Art (TMA) is located at 1300 S. Mahon Ave. on the Tyler Junior College main campus. Regular TMA hours are 10am-5pm TuesdaySaturday, and 1-5pm Sunday. The Museum is closed Mondays. For more info call the museum at (903)595-1001, tylermuseum.org, or email info@ tylermuseum.org. “Texas Birds: Works by Frank X. Tolbert”
Organized by the Tyler Museum of Art, “Texas Birds” features works from Frank X. Tolbert’s ongoing “Texas Bird Project” – including a recently finished piece that never has been seen by the public. Started in 2014, this body of work includes drawings, paintings and prints spotlighting a variety of avian species throughout the Lone Star State. The exhibition opens to the public Sunday, 18 • EGuideMagazine.com
watched him as a kid with my dad. He taught me the basics of painting long before I ever picked up a brush. He made no real money from it. His heart made me love his work. I still am not a giant fan of his actual art but he is an artist I will forever admire because it was so much more about the love for art than anything else,” she states. Massey also finds inspiration in the art of Shepard Fairey (contemporary street artist, graphic designer, illustrator and founder of OBEY), Betsy Youngquist (surreal, mixed media artist), and Ron English (artist who explores brand imagery and advertising), just to name a few. “Art has given me a community of wonderful people who are determined to make our world a better and more colorful place. If it wasn’t for art, I wouldn’t have met so many brilliant, beautiful hearts who inspire me and so many others to keep creating and moving forward. Art is a common ground in a world filled with fear. We cannot escape our need to connect and communicate. Art connects in both a cathartic and subversive way so it is easy to let go. I feel like I have found a place now in my life where I can truly be myself and also give refuge to others who are seeking the same. I feel like community is key to a solid life filled with good things and once you have it, the paradigm shifts,” states the artist. Massey adds, “As I grew as an artist I felt one thing I was really lacking was community so I joined the Tyler Art of Peace Committee and got the privilege to create a peace themed mural at Discovery Science Place and a Peace Pillar for the Under the Bridge Ministry. I also go to create several peace poles found throughout Tyler. I am now a part of the Van Zandt Art and Cultural Committee and we just hosted our first art show, the Van Go Art Fair in Van, Texas. It was a spectacular event. May 5th and runs through August 4th. TMA members and special guests are invited for a first look at the exhibition and an opportunity to meet the artist during the Members’ Preview Reception from 5:30-7pm Saturday, May 4th at the Museum. To RSVP or for information on becoming a TMA member, call (903)595-1001, go to tylermuseum.org/support/ membership, or facebook. com/Tyler.Museum.Of.Art.
